OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
IBM DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 offers an
OS/2 workstation-based control point for managing the DB2 family of
relational databases across your enterprise. Expanding upon the
functionality available today in DataHub/2 Release 2, DataHub for
OS/2 Version 2 supports your client/server data solutions across IBM
platforms. DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 manages the following DB2
family databases:
o DB2 for MVS/ESA Version 2.3 and Version 3.1
o DB2/2 (TM) Version 1.2 and DB2 for OS/2 Version 2
o DB2 for OS/400 Version 2.2 and Version 3.1
o DB2 for VM (SQL/DS (TM) Version 3.3)
o DB2/6000 (TM) Version 1 and DB2 for AIX Version 2
DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 provides a task-oriented graphical
user interface from which you can:
o Perform comprehensive database Systems Management tasks:
- Display database objects and relationships between the
objects:
With DataHub for OS/2 Version 2, you can display
database objects including tables, columns, authorizations,
and locks. With DB2 for OS/2 Version 2 and DB2 for AIX
Version 2, you can display the new catalog object types and
relationships.
- Distribute data across the enterprise by copying and
migrating database objects and definitions from one
relational database management system to another.
- Add, change, or delete user authorizations:
With DataHub for OS/2 Version 2, administrators can
add or delete User Profile Management (UPM) users and use DB2
commands to update database configurations remotely.
- Serve as a launch platform for other database Systems
Management tools:
IBM's DataPropagator (TM) Relational, DataRefresher
(TM), and DB2 Estimator, among others, can be initiated from
DataHub. This gives administrators a common workbench from
which to perform database management tasks.
- Locate and understand details of distributed database
transactions:
DataHub administrators with DB2 for MVS and DB2 for VM
can display status of units of work of their distributed
applications. This includes displaying status of users and
locks.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
o Effectively manage DB2 databases in a large distributed
environment:
- Expanded network protocol support:
DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 now supports additional
network protocols between the DataHub control point and the
managed workstation databases. NetBIOS is supported on
OS/2, and TCP/IP is supported on OS/2 and AIX. This is in
addition to APPC support on OS/2 and AIX.
- Interoperability with Systems Management:
DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 generates alerts and SNMP
traps that can be processed by NetView for AIX, NetView for
OS/2, or other SNMP-based Systems Management products.
- Issue OS/2 commands to remote OS/2 managed hosts, including
remote re-IPL of OS/2 managed hosts:
These new features of DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 allow
you to perform tasks at an OS/2 managed host. For example,
you can now manage OS/2 directories and files, determine
which processes are running, perform OS/2 tasks, and re-IPL
the OS/2 managed host. In addition, you can transfer files
to and from the OS/2 control point and the workstation
databases managed by DataHub Support for OS/2 and you can
update the DataHub Support configuration at the managed host
to configure new databases. You can also issue DB2 for
OS/2 Version 2 commands or scripts remotely.
- Issue concurrent database tasks:
You can invoke administration tasks without having to
wait for other tasks to complete. For example, a DBA can
issue a long-running table reorganization, and while that
task is running, perform other tasks.
- Install and setup DataHub easily:
DataHub for OS/2 automatically checks for new
databases on the LAN, simplifying the configuration of the
system. A number of other enhancements ease installation,
configuration and management of the distributed database
environment, allowing administrators to focus on the tasks to
be performed, not on how to perform them.
o Automate database management tasks:
- Schedule tasks to execute at pre-defined times:
With the DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 enhanced scheduler
and timer functions, administrators can schedule routine
tasks to run remotely and at specific times or specific
intervals. For example, routine database utilities, such as
backup, load, and unload, can be scheduled to run remotely
during off-peak hours. DataHub monitors the scheduled tasks
and records return codes, output, and error messages in the
DataHub control database. Return codes can also be forwarded
to SNMP-based products for additional actions if desired.
The DBA can easily query the DataHub database to find any
problems needing attention.
- Perform workflow management:
With IBM FlowMark (TM) for OS/2, DataHub's functions
can be scheduled and automatically executed in Flowmark's
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
workflow model. IBM FlowMark for OS/2 helps database
administrators precisely document, test, and execute complex
multi-step tasks. DataHub executable commands can be dragged
from the DataHub window and dropped onto FlowMark workflow
models.
o Interoperate with Systems Management products:
DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 can interoperate with NetView
for AIX, NetView for OS/2, and other SNMP-based Systems
Management products. When a problem occurs, DataHub for
OS/2 Version 2 can send an alert to the Systems Management
product to:
- Open a NetView problem report and route it to the enterprise
control point
- Page a DBA
- Take a specified corrective action
DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 provides support for the
administration of DataPropagator Relational Version 1 Release 2
replication with AS/400 (R). The DataHub Support/400 product will
not be continued. Refer to Software Announcement 295-257, dated
June 21, 1995, for more information. However, support for DB2 for
OS/400 Version 3 is available with DataHub for OS/2 Version 2 with a
limited set of functions, including browsing the database catalog.
Extended database Systems Management support for the DB2 for OS/400
database is planned to be provided in the DataHub family of products
in the future.
