OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
IBM provides a comprehensive set of Internet products that
give you quick and easy access to the information highway. With the
new Internet Connection products, you can explore the Internet, shop
around the world from home, host your own Web home pages to promote
your company's products.
IBM WEBEXPLORER FOR OS/2 WARP
IBM continues to enhance it's popular WebExplorer.
Enhancements are made available through the electronic software
download feature of the Internet Connection product provided with
OS/2 Warp. These latest enhancements which will be available by
June 27, 1995, make the WebExplorer now easier to use and even more
powerful.
o Mailto support was added. When selected, an easy-to-use form
will come up which allows you to enter a message that is then
mailed to the recipient specified in the mailto tag.
o News articles are now displayed as a hierarchical tree making it
easier to follow the thread of articles. Users can also now
easily post and subscribe to news groups.
o WebExplorer has improved integration with the Workplace Shell
(R). You can drag a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) from the
WebExplorer application to create a URL Workplace Shell object.
This object can then be dropped back onto the WebExplorer
application or just onto the WebExplorer icon triggering it to
access the URL. A user can effectively organize, sort and
categorize their favorite Web locations by using Workplace Shell
folders.
o WebExplorer also supports document streaming. All supported
image formats will be displayed using the streaming method thus
improving the performance and presentation of the images.
IBM INTERNET CONNECTION SERVER FOR OS/2 WARP AND IBM INTERNET
CONNECTION SERVER FOR AIX
A business can effectively promote its corporate messages,
provide marketing information, give sales support to customers and
even gain a competitive edge by having their own home pages
accessible on the Web. Access to the Web pages can be kept within a
company or made available outside of the company. IBM's Internet
Connection Server for OS/2 Warp and IBM's Internet Connection Server
for AIX provide all the necessary features to get Web pages on the
Internet.
o Acts as a repository for resources (home pages) created with
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
o Serves requests from a Web browser (client) using Hypertext
Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to transfer the document.
o Provides Proxy support which means the server acts as an agent
for the browser to access remote servers not directly accessible
by the browser because of security access restrictions. The
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
proxy server supports requests from HTTP, FTP, and Gopher and
acts on their behalf.
o Supports proxy caching. The proxy server can temporarily store
files making subsequent requests for those files available to the
requester much quicker.
o Provides application interfaces using Common Gateway Interface
(CGI) which is an API between the Web Server and another
application such as a database. Sample CGI scripts are provided
that will negotiate the movement of data between the Web server
and an outside application.
o Quick and easy installation is provided. For OS/2 Warp, the Web
Server is installed using the standard OS/2 installation tool,
Software Installer. Installation of the Web Server for AIX
follows the standard AIX installation procedures through SMIT
using Installp.
o An easy-to-use configuration tool is provided. HTML forms are
used to configure such information as time-out settings, proxy
servers, caching. For OS/2 Warp, the WebExplorer can be used for
configuration and administration tasks. For AIX, a Web browser
of your choice may be used.
The AIX Internet Connection server was developed to
specifically take advantage of native AIX utilities including the
System Resource Controller (SRC) for simplified initialization of the
server and auto-restart; logging of critical messages through the AIX
syslog; and improved performance and scalability of the server
through the use of threaded transaction processing using AIX native
kernel threads.
