  35.           major features of OS/2 Warp with the power to handle a new range of
  36.           applications made possible by RISC architecture for the Power Series
  37.           (TM) systems.  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will continue the
  38.           growth of the OS/2 product family and reinforces IBM's strong
  39.           commitment to OS/2.
  40.                  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will support direct
  41.           execution of x86 DOS and Windows+ 3.x binary applications used on
  42.           today's personal computers.  A comprehensive set of developers tools
  43.           will be available to assist in porting 16-bit to 32-bit OS/2
  44.           applications.  Investment in OS/2 32-bit applications is preserved,
  45.           as most existing applications only require a recompile to exploit the
  46.           IBM PowerPC microprocessor.  OS/2 users and developers can exploit
  47.           their existing skills because of the single and consistent
  48.           implementation of the OS/2 API set.
  49.                  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will also provide a
  50.           valuable set of networking and communications software as part of the
  51.           software strategy defined by IBM's Open Blueprint.  This software
  52.           will support NetBIOS, SNA, IEEE 802.2, TCP/IP, and LAN Requester;
  53.           provides an easy-to-use, integrated installation utility and plugs

  94.           IBM OS/2 WARP CONNECT (POWERPC EDITION)
  95.           INTEGRATED CONNECTIVITY:  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will
  96.           provide a valuable set of networking and communications software.
  97.           Network Services will provide a framework to support multiple
  98.           networking protocols including:  NetBIOS, IEEE 802.2, TCP/IP, and SNA
  99.           APPC and APPN (R) End Node.
  100.                  A series of communications APIs (based on Berkeley sockets)
  101.           will be supported for TCP/IP, NetBIOS, and Local Inter-Process
  102.           Communications (IPC).  APPC and CPIC APIs will be provided for SNA.
  103.                  IBM OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) LAN Requester will
  104.           provide a subset of function in OS/2 LAN Server 4.0 LAN Requester.

  124.           The LAN Requester Redirector will support the Physical File System,
  125.           printer devices, and pipes.
  126.           DEVELOPMENT TOOLS:  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) includes a
  127.           new object oriented scripting language, Object REXX.  Object REXX is
  128.           used to drive the user interface as well as other object based
  129.           technologies.  Object REXX is an extension to the REXX language and
  130.           supports existing REXX programs.

  137.               object-oriented offerings for enabling a powerful new vision of
  138.               programming based on constructions from parts.  The VisualAge
  139.               family is an award-winning, visual development environment for
  140.               creating line-of-business applications.
  141.                      VisualAge C++ for OS/2 provides a means of deploying
  142.               high-performance business applications by combining a high degree
  143.               of compatibility with VisualAge C++ Version 3 on OS/2 Warp
  144.               Version 3 (x86) with state of the art RISC optimization.  A
  145.               native version and a version hosted on OS/2 Warp Version 3 (x86)
  146.               will be provided.
  147.           o   IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition)
  148.               -- Available as part of The Developer Connection for OS/2 and IBM
  149.               VisualAge C++, the toolkit is positioned to assist developers of
  150.               Power Series specific applications and allow a recompile of
  151.               existing OS/2 applications running on x86 processors to run on
  152.               the IBM Power Series family.
  153.           The combination of application development function contained in
  154.           OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition), the Developer Connection for
  155.           OS/2, and these separately available tools, will provide a superior
  156.           set of development tools and aids.
  157.           IBM MICROKERNEL TECHNOLOGY:  The IBM microkernel technology will
  158.           provide the means to implement the familiar OS/2 environment on new
  159.           platforms.  The microkernel was designed with three express purposes
  160.           in mind:  portability, scalability, and modularity.  Because the
  161.           range of new chipsets coming into the market is growing increasingly
  162.           more diverse, traditional monolithic operating systems built and
  163.           written expressly to one chipset architecture may not be able to be
  164.           quickly and easily moved to new families of processors.  This
  165.           scenario impacts your ability to leverage existing code bases and
  166.           skillsets in order to take immediate advantage of the new
  167.           opportunities created by these evolutions of technology.
  168.                  Use of IBM microkernel technology also establishes a highly
  169.           modular architecture whereby components written to its interface can
  170.           be scaled along with the microkernel.  These components, known as
  171.           "services", are written to specific functional purposes such as file
  172.           systems, transport providers, security systems, or LAN services.
  173.           Whichever services are needed in a particular environment for a
  174.           particular purpose are simply "plugged into" the microkernel.  A

  182.           OS/2-specific elements such as the Workplace Shell user interface,
  183.           32-bit API and libraries, command set, and other functions are
  184.           entirely consistent across all members of the OS/2 family.
  185.                  The operating environments that can be built using this
  186.           powerful new technology range from special-purpose systems designed
  187.           for embedded controllers and hand-held devices upwards to the new
  188.           PowerPC Edition of OS/2 Warp Connect.  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC

  193.           OPENGL 3-D GRAPHICS SUPPORT:  OpenGL is a highly functional 3-D API
  194.           currently available on many workstation platforms.  It supports
  195.           precise immediate mode 3-D rendering of points, lines, polygons, and
  196.           Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) surfaces.  OpenGL contains
  197.           support for multiple light sources, anti-aliasing, texture mapping,
  198.           fogging, hidden surface removal, transparency, motion blur, and
  199.           double buffering.  OpenGL is used by CAD, entertainment, industrial
  200.           design and modeling, biochemistry, and scientific visualization
  201.           applications.
  202.                  OpenGL on OS/2 does not require additional 3-D graphics
  203.           hardware support.  It is a complete software implementation whose
  204.           performance scales with CPU power.  The OpenGL graphics pipeline has
  205.           been tuned extensively for the PowerPC architecture to take advantage
  206.           of its floating-point power.
  207.                  OpenGL device driver source code will be available in The IBM
  208.           Developer Connection Device Driver Kit for OS/2.  This device driver
  209.           source, when tailored to 3-D graphics boards, can bring a much higher
  210.           level of performance to 3-D graphics applications.
  211.           MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT:  The multimedia application development support
  212.           of OS/2 Warp Version 3 is carried over to OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC
  213.           Edition).  Included will be CD Audio, MIDI playback, image support,
  214.           animation, video support, Kodak** PhotoCD**, and support for the
  215.           Yamaha** OPL3 FM Synthesizer.
  216.           o   IBM SoftMIDI Synthesizer
  217.                      The IBM SoftMIDI Synthesizer will use high-quality audio
  218.               sampling and supports the General MIDI standard.  MIDI files will
  219.               allow complex musical compositions to be represented in a very
  220.               compact form and played back on music synthesizers.  This
  221.               exciting music synthesizer will be capable of responding to
  222.               General MIDI files to produce high quality music.  The General
  223.               MIDI files will provide music for multimedia presentations,
  224.               games, educational software and any other multimedia application
  225.               with files much smaller than digitized .WAV files.  The IBM
  226.               SoftMIDI Synthesizer can be configured for different
  227.               environments, providing entry level to high level music sound
  228.               quality without additional audio hardware.  It supports up to 32
  229.               voices.  Normally a special add-on card is required to provide
  230.               wavetable music synthesis.  The IBM SoftMIDI Synthesizer is
  231.               another example of using the advanced architecture and floating
  232.               point capability of the IBM PowerPC processors.

  239.           o   Crystal** Business Audio Driver
  240.                      The IBM Power Series systems will have built-in audio
  241.               support via the Crystal 4231 or the Crystal 4232 Audio Systems.
  242.               OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) supports the Crystal 4231
  243.               Audio System that is included on the ThinkPad (R) Power Series
  244.               and the Crystal 4232 Audio System that is included on the IBM
  245.               Personal Computer Power Series.
  246.                      OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will provide the
  247.               standard support of Wave, Aux, and MIDI functions.  In addition
  248.               to this standard feature set, the audio driver will support a
  249.               full duplex mode of operation, wherein playback and record can be
  250.               performed simultaneously, and an enhanced full duplex mode where
  251.               playback and record can be performed simultaneously at different
  252.               sample rates.  The audio driver will also provide for the control
  253.               of the volume of sound to be recorded.
  254.           INTERNATIONALIZATION:  OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will
  255.           contain XPG/4, a library of APIs, commands, and locales defined by
  256.           the X/Open Portability Guide, Version 4.  This will allow for
  257.           portability of applications and a code-set independent, locale-based,
  258.           internationalization model.
  259.           IMPROVED INSTALLABILITY:
  260.           o   CD-ROM availability -- OS/2 Warp Connect (PowerPC Edition) will
  261.               be bootable and installable from CD-ROM.
  262.           o   Feature Install program -- will allow use of the same method to
  263.               install the operating system as well as service updates that may
  264.               be required in the future; and it provides a means to remove
  265.               unwanted features, in essence providing an un-install capability.
  266.           IMPROVED OPERATIONS:  The system registry will:
  267.           o   Provide the capability to dynamically modify the system
  268.               configuration without having to reboot the system.
  269.           o   Provide a database to store information such as, system
  270.               information, process environment variables, and application
  271.               profile information normally kept in .INI and CONFIG.SYS files.
