TITLE IBM MAIL LAN GATEWAY/2 VERSION 1 RELEASE 3
ABSTRACT *-------------------------------------------------------------------*
| IN BRIEF . . . |
The IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3:
o Addresses mail to Microsoft Mail post offices, cc:Mail post
offices, and Lotus Notes domains from a host office
electronic mail system.
o Bridges LAN e-mail systems with other LAN and host e-mail
systems.
o Reduces administrative address maintenance that exists
between LAN office systems and host office systems.
o Is easy to install and manage; all the code is resident on
the LAN.
| |
*-------------------------------------------------------------------*
Have you ever been frustrated when you can't access E-mail
because you're on a different system? IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2
Version 1 Release 3 now offers a seamless way to get that mail. This
application allows several popular LAN office electronic mail systems
to communicate with other dissimilar LAN and host office electronic
mail systems. It resides on a LAN and is co-resident with the LAN
office electronic mail application. No additional software is needed
on the host office electronic mail system to enable communications.
In addition, Mail LAN Gateway/2:
o Performs the addressing mail format conversions required to send
electronic mail to a dissimilar office system.
o Can be used to address mail to Microsoft** Mail post offices,
cc:Mail** post offices, and Lotus Notes** domains from a host
office electronic mail system.
o Allows PROFS and OfficeVision/VM (TM) users to address multiple
downstream Lotus Notes domains, cc:Mail post offices and/or
Microsoft Mail post offices as a single node.
o Offers connectivity support to Lotus Notes, cc:Mail, Microsoft
Mail, PROFS, OfficeVision/VM, OfficeVision/MVS (TM) via DISOSS,
IBM Mail Exchange, OfficeVision/400 (TM), DISOSS,
OfficePath**/SNADS**, NETDATA files produced by the SENDFILE and
NOTE commands of the Conversational Monitor System (CMS)
component of VM/SP, VM/SP HPO, VM/XA (TM), VM/ESA (R), and
EMC2/TAO** with the Fisher International SNADS Gateway.
As previously stated in Software Announcement 292-620, dated
October 20, 1992, it continues to be our intent to provide National
Language Support for end user error messages generated by the IBM
Mail LAN Gateway/2 when enabling the cc:Mail component.
It is our intent to provide interoperability between the IBM
Mail LAN Gateway/2 and IBM WorkGroup by June 30, 1995. IBM Workgroup
will use the existing cc:Mail interface, so interconnectivity between
IBM Workgroup and cc:Mail will require installation of two licensed
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 2
copies. Documentation for installing IBM WorkGroup with the IBM Mail
LAN Gateway/2 will be available in the README file of the IBM
WorkGroup product.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
ADDITIONAL CONNECTIVITY
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 has added connectivity
support for Microsoft Mail. Existing users of the IBM Mail LAN
Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 2 product supporting cc:Mail, Lotus
Notes, OfficeVision/400, OfficeVision (R)/VM, PROFS, IBM Mail
Exchange, OfficePath/SNADS, DISOSS and OfficeVision/MVS via DISOSS
may now upgrade to provide communication to Microsoft Mail.
DYNAMICALLY DEFINED ALIASES
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 reduces the administrative
burden of maintaining addressing incompatibilities that exist between
LAN office systems and host office systems. The added support for
Microsoft Mail makes use of the IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 which helps
create the Microsoft alias names needed to communicate with the other
incompatible electronic office systems. After the utility is run,
new users will dynamically be defined aliases when sending electronic
mail through the gateway. This utility, combined with auto aliasing,
helps to reduce service administration time associated with managing
the gateway.
EASY TO INSTALL AND MANAGE
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 is easy to install and
manage because all the code is resident on the LAN. In addition, IBM
Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 can be defined as a single
SNADS or RSCS node, and can handle addressing of downstream Lotus
Notes domains or cc:Mail post offices or Microsoft Mail post offices.
This reduces the burden of defining each Lotus Notes domain, cc:Mail
post office, or Microsoft Mail post office as a SNADS or RSCS node.
It also eliminates the need for a license of the IBM Mail LAN
Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 on each LAN domain.
A single license of the IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 can support
multiple downstream cc:Mail and/or Microsoft Mail post offices and
Lotus Notes domains as a separate SNADS Destination Group Name (DGN)
or RSCS node. This allows the system administrator to easily group
logical sets of users without having to license multiple copies of
the IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2.
NOTE: The systems administrator should keep in mind the usage
limitations (outlined in the LIMITATIONS section) of the IBM Mail LAN
Gateway/2 when logically defining groups of users.
PROTECTS CUSTOMER INVESTMENT IN E-MAIL SYSTEMS
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 protects the investment
that customers have made in Microsoft Mail, Lotus Notes, cc:Mail,
OfficeVision/400, OfficeVision/VM, PROFS, DISOSS and IBM Mail
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
Exchange by bridging these systems so that they may communicate with
each other. Users making use of Microsoft Mail may now extend their
current reach to a new subset of potential trading partners.
IMPROVES CUSTOMER'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 allows Microsoft Mail to
natively attach to IBM Mail Exchange. This attachment capability
allows customers to communicate with their customers, suppliers and
other trading partners. These linkages can provide a competitive
advantage by fostering and improving customer business relationships
and improving cycle times.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 is designed to
complement and extend the reach of customers currently defined to the
IBM Mail Exchange service and to customers that have licensed
Microsoft Mail, Lotus Notes, cc:Mail, OfficeVision/400,
OfficeVision/VM, PROFS, OfficeVision/MVS with DISOSS, DISOSS, or
OfficePath/SNADS.
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 is easy to install.
Network planning and definitions are required when enabling the IBM
Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 to communicate with
OfficeVision/400, OfficePath/SNADS, IBM Mail Exchange,
OfficeVision/VM, and DISOSS.
CUSTINFO EDUCATION SUPPORT
There is no education for IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1
Release 3.

LIMITATIONS: The IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 has
several feature codes, each of which places certain restrictions on
the number of users the customer can authorize to send through the
IBM Mail LAN Gateway/2. The user restriction is based on the type of
LAN office system (that is, Microsoft Mail, Lotus Notes, cc:Mail),
and the number of users on the LAN that will be authorized to send
mail through the gateway. Therefore, a Tier 1 license, for example,
can support up to 10 Microsoft Mail users, up to 10 Lotus Notes
users, and up to 10 cc:Mail users. Users are identified by their
user ID.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Performance of the IBM Mail LAN
Gateway/2 Version 1 Release 3 will depend on the customer's processor
speed, disk drive type and model, message frequency, message size,
and communications environment.
