OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
FLEXIBLE PACKAGING
FlowMark Version 2 is now available as one program package on CD-ROM
for OS/2 and one program package on CD-ROM for AIX, both containing
the server, buildtime component, and OS/2, AIX, and Windows runtime
facilities. Additional licenses of the program package are
available, as are licenses of the program package components in user
packs. Any one component can be used on a given workstation,
providing users the ability to easily configure networks according to
business needs, regardless of the mix of servers and clients.
SERVER FUNCTIONS
FlowMark offers servers on OS/2 and AIX environments. A FlowMark
server running OS/2 or AIX supports AIX, Windows, or OS/2 FlowMark
clients.
FlowMark servers include:
o ObjectStore**, the FlowMark object-oriented database (OODB),
consisting of FlowMark OODB server and FlowMark OODB client
o A process navigation engine
o Work list management functions
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
BUILDTIME CLIENT FUNCTIONS
The buildtime (B/T) client for OS/2 can be connected to a FlowMark
server running in the OS/2 or AIX environment.
DEFINITION FACILITIES: These facilities enable the definition of
processes and their hierarchies, the assignment of programs to
activities, and the allocation of staff such as people or roles. The
following definition facilities are provided:
o A Process Definition facility for the specification and
maintenance of process models as activity networks, which can
involve multiple steps and many users. The creation and
manipulation of activity networks are done with a graphical
front-end. An activity network can be considered as a directed
graph where the nodes represent activities to be performed and
the connectors between the nodes represent the control flow or
the data flow. The control flows can be unconditional or
conditional, in which case a boolean expression is associated
with the connector.
o A Staff Definition facility for the definition of staff to which
activities can be assigned, including authorization of persons
for FlowMark functions and data. It maintains information about
people, levels, roles, organizations, and their relationships.
o A Program Registration facility for the registration of programs
that can be invoked at Process Execution and the specification of
input/output parameters. All programs that should be attached to
an activity in a process must be registered.
o A Data Structure Definition facility for the definition of the
structure of information that can be transported from a program
to FlowMark and from FlowMark to a program, and from an activity
to a successor activity via data connectors.
PROCESS ANIMATION FACILITY: This facility determines the dynamic
behavior of processes and uses animated graphics to make that
behavior visible.
An important part of the job of a process modeler is to verify
the logical consistency and the dynamic behavior of processes. If
the processes are large and complex, this is a difficult, error-prone
task that often leaves severe design errors undetected until run
time, when they are difficult and expensive to correct.
RUNTIME CLIENT FUNCTIONS
FlowMark now offers runtime (R/T) clients on OS/2, AIX, and Windows.
These R/T clients can be connected to FlowMark servers running in
OS/2 or AIX environments.
o Enterprise-wide R/T client support
An R/T client can log on to multiple FlowMark servers in
parallel. This enables the R/T to participate in processes on
all of these servers concurrently without the need for continuous
logon/logoff to the different FlowMark servers.
o Process Execution Facilities
Process execution is the R/T facility that orchestrates
the actual execution of instances of processes. It coordinates
the work of multiple users, as determined by the process. The
R/T client gives the user access to these functions and lets the
user control the execution of processes.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
o Work List Manager
The Work List Manager provides users with "to-do" lists.
Users can get activities assigned on their work lists from one or
more activity networks. The R/T client gives access to the
user's activities that are controlled centrally by the Work List
Management functions on the server.
o APIs
Process control and container APIs are provided with
interfaces for C (all platforms), REXX (OS/2 and AIX), and MS
Visual Basic** (Windows).
o Choice of applications (tools) related to current activities by
end users at run time, allowing them to look up activity-specific
information.
o Notification for overdue activities
o Search for process instances
PROCESS EXECUTION FACILITIES: Process Execution is the R/T facility
that orchestrates the execution of processes. This includes
navigation through the activity network and the dispatching of
"start-able" activities in the process according to the
specifications in the process definition.
It also supports the display of status information of running
processes in a graphical view.
ENABLE QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS: The system-driven execution of
predefined and validated processes enforces standardization and helps
to eliminate user errors. It ensures that only certified processes
will be executed, which will result in fewer defects in customers'
offerings and in delivery of better products or services more
quickly.
IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY: Execution of process models reminds
users that they have work to do and automatically links them with the
programs required to do the work. The chore of finding and starting
programs is eliminated. This simplifies computer usage for the users
and results in improved productivity.
Activities that consist merely of starting programs can be
performed automatically by FlowMark. For example, many printing and
system administration programs can be run without human guidance.
In typical business processes, data items, such as file names,
customer names, and account numbers, are used repeatedly in several
activities. Retyping of these items is a major source of errors in
non-automated processes. With FlowMark, the data items have to be
typed only once and are then assigned automatically to later
activities. Typing errors are reduced, increasing user productivity.
ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS
FlowMark provides the following functions for the system
administrator:
o Import/export of process models and staff, program, and data
structure information from/to flat files (on B/T client only)
o Audit trail (on FlowMark servers)
SAMPLE PROCESS MODELS
FlowMark provides a set of sample process models based on workflow
scenarios from different industries to allow newcomers an easy entry
to the world of workflow management. This makes it easier and faster

PRODUCT POSITIONING
FlowMark helps organizations progressively improve their business
processes by precisely and consistently documenting the processes and
controlling process execution. Efficiency and quality of work are
improved at the departmental level, in an heterogeneous environment.
FlowMark provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface for
defining, verifying, and working on a wide range of business
processes.
The FlowMark family should be of interest to organizations in
all industries that are planning to document, review, improve, and
implement business processes. These considerations and plans may be
triggered by changes in the operational environment, by the necessity
to introduce new application solutions, or by the start of a new
business operation.
FlowMark also supports organizations engaged in documenting,
administering, and monitoring selected processes when preparing for
ISO 9000 certification.
FlowMark plays a central role in the design and implementation
of distributed applications, consisting of component programs
residing on workstations or on a host computer. FlowMark controls
the execution and cooperation of these programs, which may be new or
may already exist, and which may run on workstations under OS/2, AIX,
MS Windows, or on hosts under CICS/MVS (R) or CICS (TM)/ESA (AIX and
OS/2), and IMS/VS, IMS/ESA (R), or TSO, MVS, OS/400 (R), and VM (on
OS/2).
MQ Series Integration Code on FlowMark OS/2 and AIX components
is available, allowing access to all platforms once supported by MQ
Series.
IBM is a member of the Work Flow Management Coalition. This
is a group of companies whose aim is to develop specifications for
software that allow different workflow management products to
interoperate and, as appropriate, to submit those specifications to
the appropriate standards body.
VisualInfo recommends FlowMark as the workflow management
product of choice for dealing with complex processes. The
integration building block shows how the following VisualInfo
functions can be invoked from a FlowMark activity:
o Create folder
o Register image to folder
o Add image to folder
o Display image
To speed VisualInfo integration with IBM FlowMark for OS/2,
FlowMark and the sample integration code are provided on the
ImagePlus (R) VisualInfo CD-ROM.
Integration services for VisualInfo for OS/2 are described in

COMPATIBILITY: FlowMark for OS/2 Version 2 is upward compatible with
FlowMark for OS/2 Version 1. FlowMark for AIX Version 2 is upward
compatible with FlowMark for AIX Version 1.
LIMITATIONS: FlowMark does not support communications between
FlowMark servers, except via a common data base.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: The performance of FlowMark depends on
the utilization of the FlowMark and ObjectStore server machines, the
speed and memory size of the server and client machines, and the
transmission speed and load of the communication channels.
When a large number of clients is needed to support a business
process, or when the client activity rate is high, you should
consider spreading the server workload across multiple server
machines to reduce the utilization and improve performance. Contact
your IBM representative for configuration guidance for your specific
implementation of FlowMark.
CONFIGURATIONS SUPPORTED BY FLOWMARK: The following configurations
are supported by FlowMark.
o Configuration 1 -- Stand-alone
In this configuration the FlowMark server and FlowMark B/T
and R/T clients are installed on the same machine with the
FlowMark OODB (ObjectStore) server and client. With this
installation, one B/T and one R/T user can work concurrently.
With this minimum configuration of FlowMark, neither
Communications Manager/2 nor TCP/IP or NetBIOS is required.

o Configuration 2 -- Client/Server
In this configuration, the FlowMark server and FlowMark
OODB server are installed on a single machine. FlowMark B/T
client and R/T client are installed on one or more physically
different machines, but connected to the FlowMark server.
With this installation, multiple users can work with B/T
and R/T clients concurrently.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 11
Due to the multi-user capability of the AIX operating
system, the FlowMark for AIX R/T Client can be installed on the
same machine as the FlowMark for AIX Server, and still offer
multi-user access.

o Configuration 3 -- Multiple servers using same database
In this configuration, there is a dedicated machine for
the FlowMark OODB server and associated database. This shared
OODB server can then be accessed by multiple FlowMark servers.
As in configuration 2, FlowMark B/T and R/T client machines can
then connect to these multiple FlowMark servers.
With this installation, multiple users can work with B/T
and R/T clients concurrently. The recommended configuration is
to attach large numbers of client machines.
Configuration 3 also provides an entry solution for
communication between FlowMark servers via the common database.
In this setup, a process on Server1 can start a subprocess to be
handled by users logged-on to Server2.
