  123.           BUILDTIME CLIENT FUNCTIONS
  124.           The buildtime (B/T) client for OS/2 can be connected to a FlowMark
  125.           server running in the OS/2 or AIX environment.
  126.           DEFINITION FACILITIES:  These facilities enable the definition of
  127.           processes and their hierarchies, the assignment of programs to
  128.           activities, and the allocation of staff such as people or roles.  The
  129.           following definition facilities are provided:
  130.           o   A Process Definition facility for the specification and
  131.               maintenance of process models as activity networks, which can
  132.               involve multiple steps and many users.  The creation and
  133.               manipulation of activity networks are done with a graphical
  134.               front-end.  An activity network can be considered as a directed
  135.               graph where the nodes represent activities to be performed and
  136.               the connectors between the nodes represent the control flow or
  137.               the data flow.  The control flows can be unconditional or
  138.               conditional, in which case a boolean expression is associated
  139.               with the connector.
  140.           o   A Staff Definition facility for the definition of staff to which
  141.               activities can be assigned, including authorization of persons
  142.               for FlowMark functions and data.  It maintains information about
  143.               people, levels, roles, organizations, and their relationships.
  144.           o   A Program Registration facility for the registration of programs
  145.               that can be invoked at Process Execution and the specification of
  146.               input/output parameters.  All programs that should be attached to
  147.               an activity in a process must be registered.
  148.           o   A Data Structure Definition facility for the definition of the
  149.               structure of information that can be transported from a program
  150.               to FlowMark and from FlowMark to a program, and from an activity
  151.               to a successor activity via data connectors.
  152.           PROCESS ANIMATION FACILITY:  This facility determines the dynamic
  153.           behavior of processes and uses animated graphics to make that
  154.           behavior visible.
  155.                  An important part of the job of a process modeler is to verify
  156.           the logical consistency and the dynamic behavior of processes.  If
  157.           the processes are large and complex, this is a difficult, error-prone
  158.           task that often leaves severe design errors undetected until run
  159.           time, when they are difficult and expensive to correct.
  160.           RUNTIME CLIENT FUNCTIONS
  161.           FlowMark now offers runtime (R/T) clients on OS/2, AIX, and Windows.
  162.           These R/T clients can be connected to FlowMark servers running in
  163.           OS/2 or AIX environments.
  164.           o   Enterprise-wide R/T client support
  165.                      An R/T client can log on to multiple FlowMark servers in
  166.               parallel.  This enables the R/T to participate in processes on
  167.               all of these servers concurrently without the need for continuous
  168.               logon/logoff to the different FlowMark servers.
  169.           o   Process Execution Facilities
  170.                      Process execution is the R/T facility that orchestrates
  171.               the actual execution of instances of processes.  It coordinates
  172.               the work of multiple users, as determined by the process.  The
  173.               R/T client gives the user access to these functions and lets the
  174.               user control the execution of processes.

  181.           o   Work List Manager
  182.                      The Work List Manager provides users with "to-do" lists.
  183.               Users can get activities assigned on their work lists from one or
  184.               more activity networks.  The R/T client gives access to the
  185.               user's activities that are controlled centrally by the Work List
  186.               Management functions on the server.
  187.           o   APIs
  188.                      Process control and container APIs are provided with
  189.               interfaces for C (all platforms), REXX (OS/2 and AIX), and MS
  190.               Visual Basic** (Windows).
  191.           o   Choice of applications (tools) related to current activities by
  192.               end users at run time, allowing them to look up activity-specific
  193.               information.
  194.           o   Notification for overdue activities
  195.           o   Search for process instances
  196.           PROCESS EXECUTION FACILITIES:  Process Execution is the R/T facility
  197.           that orchestrates the execution of processes.  This includes
  198.           navigation through the activity network and the dispatching of
  199.           "start-able" activities in the process according to the
  200.           specifications in the process definition.
  201.                  It also supports the display of status information of running
  202.           processes in a graphical view.
  203.           ENABLE QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS:  The system-driven execution of
  204.           predefined and validated processes enforces standardization and helps
  205.           to eliminate user errors.  It ensures that only certified processes
  206.           will be executed, which will result in fewer defects in customers'
  207.           offerings and in delivery of better products or services more
  208.           quickly.
  209.           IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY:  Execution of process models reminds
  210.           users that they have work to do and automatically links them with the
  211.           programs required to do the work.  The chore of finding and starting
  212.           programs is eliminated.  This simplifies computer usage for the users
  213.           and results in improved productivity.
  214.                  Activities that consist merely of starting programs can be
  215.           performed automatically by FlowMark.  For example, many printing and
  216.           system administration programs can be run without human guidance.
  217.                  In typical business processes, data items, such as file names,
  218.           customer names, and account numbers, are used repeatedly in several
  219.           activities.  Retyping of these items is a major source of errors in
  220.           non-automated processes.  With FlowMark, the data items have to be
  221.           typed only once and are then assigned automatically to later
  222.           activities.  Typing errors are reduced, increasing user productivity.
  223.           ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS
  224.           FlowMark provides the following functions for the system
  225.           administrator:
  226.           o   Import/export of process models and staff, program, and data
  227.               structure information from/to flat files (on B/T client only)
  228.           o   Audit trail (on FlowMark servers)
  229.           SAMPLE PROCESS MODELS
  230.           FlowMark provides a set of sample process models based on workflow
  231.           scenarios from different industries to allow newcomers an easy entry
  232.           to the world of workflow management.  This makes it easier and faster
