OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 was generally available in
September 1993 and:
o Provides CICS transaction management to multiple users of
LAN-attached programmable workstations.
o Operates as a server for clients.
o Supports cooperative processing when required with other CICS
Family systems.
o Provides powerful OLTP (online transaction processing)
capabilities to support business critical applications and their
data in client/server environments.
CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 includes a series of enhancements
which have been shipped via the service channel at intervals since
the general availability of CICS OS/2 Version 2.0. All functions of
CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 are available to customers who already
have CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 by the application of the latest service
level.
EBCDIC support is provided. This allows application data to
be passed to and received from CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 in EBCDIC
format. In many cases, this removes the need to define conversion
table entries. This offers a real saving in time and effort to
customers and software vendors who develop and test applications on
the workstation for production use on a CICS mainframe, or who port
applications from the host to CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1. It also
simplifies the development of cooperative processing applications.
This enhancement was shipped in December 1993 on CSD (Corrective
Service Diskette) UN55067 (CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 single-user) and
UN55531 (CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 multi-user). The function is subject
to compiler support and applies to applications written in Micro
Focus** COBOL and in PL/I.
CICS applications in C++ are supported. This means that
object-oriented programs can now access the CICS API, and that CICS
for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 now supports CICS application development
using Object Oriented methods. These methods, using class libraries
to encapsulate function, allow greater re-use of code, and bring the
benefits of gains in programmer productivity, program quality, and
maintainability. This function was shipped in March 1994 in CSD
UN59266 (CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 single-user) and UN59267 (CICS OS/2
Version 2.0 multi-user).
Support is included for multi-session debug, which allows the
user to run several simultaneous debug sessions. This also was
shipped in March 1994 in CSD UN59266 (CICS OS/2 Version 2.0
single-user) and UN59267 (CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 multi-user).
Support is provided for CICS applications in PL/I, using the
IBM PL/I compiler for OS/2. As well as providing customers with a
wider choice of languages (C, C++, COBOL, and PL/I), this support
especially benefits those customers who use PL/I as a key language in
their business, as it enables them to:
o Use the workstation as a platform for developing PL/I host CICS
applications.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
o Re-use existing PL/I host programming skills for CICS workstation
applications.
o Distribute/migrate existing CICS PL/I applications to the
workstation.
This function was shipped in June 1994 in CSD UN63777 (CICS
OS/2 Version 2.0 single-user) and UN63776 (CICS OS/2 Version 2.0
multi-user).
New users of CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 multi-user with
client workstations, and customers who have an existing installation
of CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 with distributed feature clients which they
wish to extend, are recommended to install members of the new family
of CICS Clients (refer to Software Announcement 295-010, dated
January 26, 1995). The CICS Clients have functional enhancements
over the distributed feature clients, and are available on a wider
range of platforms. However, for customers who have an existing
installation of distributed feature clients with CICS OS/2
Version 2.0 and who wish to extend the client installation without
moving to the new CICS Clients, the distributed feature clients
continue to be available with CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1.
NetBIOS communications are now supported over IPX/SPX using
the NetBIOS emulator provided in the Novell NetWare requester. This
communications protocol may be used with the CICS Clients for OS/2,
DOS, or Windows+, or the distributed feature clients on these
platforms. It may also be used for communication between nodes of
CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1, single-user or multi-user.
Support is introduced for TCP/IP communication with clients.
This protocol is available as an alternative to the use of NetBIOS,
for the CICS Clients for DOS, Windows, and OS/2. In the case of the
CICS Client for Macintosh**, it is the only protocol supported.
TCP/IP communication is not available with the distributed feature
clients. Support is also introduced for TCP/IP communications
between machines running CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1, single-user or
multi-user.
Customers with CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 may obtain the TCP/IP
function from January 27, 1995, by ordering the latest level of CSD.
The choice of communications available from server to server
(APPC, TCP/IP, or (except for DTP) NetBIOS) and server to CICS
Clients (NetBIOS or TCP/IP) gives customers greater flexibility in
building and extending their use of CICS across the business. They
can now re-use existing TCP/IP LANS, and therefore link parts of the
system which previously could not be included. Along with the use of
TCP/IP they can also choose to use or re-use APPC or NetBIOS in other
parts of the business, as best suits their needs. They can also
utilize or integrate LANs using Novell NetWare, both for
communication with clients and for communication with other CICS for
OS/2 servers.
CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 is shipped on CD-ROM as well as
3.5-inch diskettes, allowing customer choice of installation medium.
NOTE: This announcement also includes ordering information for CICS
for Windows NT**. For information, contact your IBM representative.

PROGRAM UPGRADE
The program package upgrade option allows currently licensed
users of CICS OS/2 Version 1.20 to obtain CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1
for a program upgrade charge. A program upgrade to either CICS for
OS/2 Version 2.0.1 single-user or CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1
multi-user will be available on January 27, 1995. In addition, an
upgrade from CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 single-user or CICS for OS/2
Version 2.0.1 single-user to CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 multi-user
will be available on the same date. These upgrades will be available
through IBM Authorized Personal Computer Dealers and IBM Authorized
Industry Remarketers -- Personal Computer certified to market IBM
Authorized Advanced Products. The remarketer will require a proof of
license for each upgrade ordered. The Proof of License for CICS OS/2
Version 1.20 is a separate proof of license page shipped in the
program package.
Customers with CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 may obtain all the
functions of CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 by application of program
services. A CSD (Corrective Service Diskette) providing this level
of function will be made available by January 27, 1995.
Customers can also order upgrades through the local IBM office
using the IBM Personal Computer/System Program IBM U.S. Upgrade and
Certification Order Form included with this announcement. The total
quantity of upgrades acquired for a specific program cannot exceed
the total quantity of program packages and/or additional licenses
previously acquired for that program. A Proof of license for upgrade
eligibility for additional license upgrades is a copy of this invoice
or previously acquired Proof of Additional License certificate.
Additional license upgrades can be entered through the local IBM
office using the IBM U.S. Upgrade and Certification Order Form
included in this announcement or ordered through an authorized
