TITLE IBM CICS CLIENTS
ABSTRACT There is great news for CICS (TM)-installed customers. With a
minimum of investment and new programming, you can easily extend your
transaction processing to client/server operation -- with the new IBM
CICS Clients.
The IBM CICS Clients are a family of client products for
workstations running a range of operating systems. This CICS Clients
family communicates by a variety of protocols and through a range of
supported communication products directly with CICS servers on all
platforms. They bring the benefits of client/server operation to the
entire CICS family of application servers.
The major advantages of client/server operation include the
following:
o The ability to exploit productivity-enhancing workstation
facilities, such as graphical or multimedia interfaces, with CICS
transactions
o The ability to exchange data directly between CICS and personal
productivity applications being used on the desktop
The IBM CICS Clients offer clients for a variety of IBM and
non-IBM platforms: OS/2 (R), DOS, Windows+, and Macintosh**. The
clients have communication capabilities via the APPC (LU6.2), TCP/IP,
and NetBIOS (including NetBIOS emulation over IPX/SPX by NetWare**)
protocols. The clients can work with the following CICS server
products:
o CICS/ESA (R) Version 3 Release 3, and later
o CICS/MVS (R) Version 2 Release 1.2
o CICS/VSE (R) Version 2 Release 2, and later
o CICS/400 (TM) Version 3 Release 1
o CICS/6000 (TM) Version 1 Release 2
o CICS OS/2 (TM) Version 2.0 multi-user, and later
NOTE: All the listed servers support the ECI function, but
not necessarily all other functions. For details, refer to Table 1
in the DESCRIPTION section.
The clients offer communication with the server by three
alternative mechanisms. The External Call Interface (ECI) enables
the design of new applications to be optimized for client/server,
with the business logic on the server and the presentation logic on
the client. The External Presentation Interface (EPI) enables new,
modern technologies, such as graphical or multimedia interfaces, to
be placed in front of existing 3270 CICS applications without the
programmer having to alter the application. The clients also provide
terminal emulation function to run CICS 3270 transactions.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
The new CICS Clients bring to the whole CICS family the
benefits of client/server, previously available directly only with
CICS OS/2 Version 2.0.
The CICS Clients provide a number of functional enhancements
and vastly expanded connectivity as compared with the distributed
feature clients of CICS OS/2 Version 2.0.
The following communications protocols are supported for
communication with appropriate servers. Note that servers generally
do not support all protocols for client communication (for full
details see Table 1 below).

The CICS Clients can communicate with the following CICS
servers. Note that not all servers support all client functions (for
full details see Table 1 below).
o CICS/ESA Version 4 Release 1
- Note that for full function, the CICS/ESA support for the
CICS Clients (see paragraph below) is required.
o CICS/ESA Version 3 Release 3
- Does not support all functions.
o CICS/MVS Version 2 Release 1.2
- Does not support all functions.
o CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 2 and later
- Does not support all functions.
o CICS/400 Version 3 Release 1
o CICS/6000 Version 1 Release 2
o CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 multi-user and later
For the supported servers for CICS for OS/2 Version 2.0.1 and
CICS/6000 Version 1 Release 2, refer respectively to Software
Announcements 295-011 and 295-002, dated January 26, 1995.
The following functions are offered by the CICS Clients:
o The ECI enables a non-CICS client application to call a CICS
program synchronously or asynchronously, as a subroutine. The
client application communicates with the program in the CICS
server using a data area called a COMMAREA. The COMMAREA is used
to pass input parameters to the CICS server, and the server in
return will use it to pass results back to the client for
manipulation or display.
The ECI is the preferred interface for developing new
client/server applications. Its call structure easily divides
the presentation logic (which will usually be in the client) from
the business logic in the CICS application, offering application
designers maximum flexibility.
At the CICS Server, ECI looks like Distributed Program
Link (DPL) from a partner CICS system.
o The EPI enables client applications to start and converse with an
existing 3270 CICS application running on the CICS server. The
CICS application sends and receives 3270 datastreams to and from
the client application as though it were conversing with a 3270
terminal. The client application captures these datastreams and
usually displays them with a non-3270 presentation product, such
as graphical user interface or multi-media software.
The EPI can be viewed as a method of enhancing an existing
CICS application by adding a graphical or other modern interface
to it. The CICS application does not need to be altered.
o CICS 3270 emulation. This enables a client workstation to
function as a 3270 display for CICS applications, without the
requirement for a separate 3270 emulator product, enabling
flexible client workstation capabilities without a large or
expensive software stack.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
At the CICS Server, EPI or CICS 3270 emulation looks like
Transaction Routing request from a partner CICS system.
o The ability to customize the client emulator's colors and
keyboard mappings, allowing users to tailor the machine to their
own preferences or to meet, for example, company standard
keyboard layouts.
o Client printer support is provided. This is the ability to
define a printer terminal on the client. This enables CICS
applications running on the server to direct output to a
client-attached printer.
The availability of terminal emulation, the EPI, and the ECI,
which can be used concurrently, allows flexibility in migration and
simultaneous use of new and old applications across the enterprise.
CICS Clients, with the exception of the CICS Client for DOS,
will support an unlimited number of outstanding concurrent ECI calls
to a CICS server, with no restrictions on communication protocols,
functions, or whether the calls are to the same or different CICS
systems. In the case of the CICS Client for DOS, there is a limit of
16 concurrent calls. With the EPI, for all client platforms, there
may concurrent calls.
CICS Clients are auto-installed at most CICS server systems.
This means that the client workstations do not have to be predefined
at the server. For exceptions, refer Table 1 below.
For APPC communications with CICS application servers, the
CICS Clients can be connected through an SNA gateway, for example IBM
Communications Manager/2 configured as a gateway, or IBM AIX SNA
Gateway/6000 Version 2.1.
The OS/2 and Windows members of the CICS Clients family
support remote server access using IBM LAN Distance (TM). The CICS
-- LAN Distance interface also gives remote local IBM offices that
are not normally connected into the central site LAN the ability to
access CICS network resources. The CICS application server and LAN
Distance connection server can use the same workstation, creating a
complete LAN/Remote network solution.

VALUE
The availability of CICS Clients enables existing CICS users to move
into client/server computing in an easy, cheap, simple, low-risk way.
CICS Clients enable the exploitation of existing low-function
workstation hardware anywhere in an enterprise to gain access to CICS
applications and data on all CICS platforms.
CICS Clients protect customers' investment in existing CICS
applications designed for use with 3270 devices, by providing the EPI
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 6
to enable these applications to interface unchanged with workstation
facilities and productivity aids.
With the use of CICS Clients, CICS applications on any server
may be optimized by locating the business logic on the server and the
presentation logic on the client, exploiting, for example, the
usability and productivity of modern graphical or multi-media
interfaces using workstations.
CICS Clients enable workstations to concurrently access
multiple enterprise applications running on different CICS servers.
CICS Clients provide a mechanism to enable automatic data
exchange between desktop productivity applications, for example a
spreadsheet and enterprise data in a CICS server.
CICS Clients offer a convenient method of interfacing CICS to
non-terminal devices, such as an image scanner or a bar-code reader,
by the use of the ECI.
Local printers attached to desktop workstations can be used
for printing output sent from CICS server applications.
Networks running Novell NetWare may be integrated with host
transaction processing installations running CICS, by the use of
NetWare for SAA.
Networks running Novell NetWare may be exploited for CICS
transaction management by CICS Clients with distributed CICS servers,
using the NetWare NetBIOS emulation.
CICS/ESA SUPPORT FOR THE CICS CLIENTS
Full function support for the CICS Clients will be provided in
CICS/ESA Version 4 during 1995. This support provides the EPI
function and CICS 3270 emulation. (Note that auto-install for
parallel LU6.2 sessions is already supported on CICS/ESA Version 4
Release 1, and the ECI is already supported on this and lower levels
of CICS/ESA.)
PRODUCT POSITIONING
CICS Clients are the optimum solution for the customer wishing
to bring transaction management to workstations. They offer the
integrity of the long-established CICS family; they offer the
flexibility to employ clients on a range of popular workstation
operating system platforms together with application servers on
mainframe and other platforms; and they allow the customer to build
on existing installations of CICS and the existing range of
applications, both previously not exploited by their investments in
workstations.
The availability of the CICS Clients means that all the
principal members of the CICS family become application servers for
client/server operation with workstations.
For customers using CICS on a mainframe or on AS/400 (R), who
also have large installations of workstations employed typically for
personal productivity, the introduction of the CICS Clients with a
front end providing a graphical-user interface or multi-media
interface brings the benefits of modern workstation technology to
both their existing 3270 CICS applications and new CICS applications.
For mainframe CICS customers with an interest in rightsizing
or moving to client/server operation, the use of CICS Clients
represents a natural and easily implemented approach, leading to an
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 7
easy migration to the new environment without the problems involved
in moving the basic application processing from its existing
platform. The use of CICS Clients in this way may be employed as an
end in itself, or it may be used as a first step towards further
rightsizing.
The use of a CICS workstation server product, such as CICS for
OS/2 or CICS/6000, may be considered in a rightsizing situation where
the workstation server is to run CICS applications, often with
attached clients. Where LAN-attached CICS Clients are to be used for
access to transaction processing in a mainframe CICS application
server, connection will typically be through a gateway server, such
as IBM Communications Manager/2. However, even where there are no
short-term plans to run CICS applications on the workstation server,
if network resources are critical the use of a CICS workstation
server may be a cost-effective solution, functioning as a session
concentrator to minimize the network resources required to connect
LAN users to the mainframe.
Further scenarios for the use of CICS Clients include the
following:
o Workstations running personal productivity applications which
require occasional access to enterprise CICS data
o Workstations which are not LAN attached but require occasional
remote access to a mainframe CICS
o Workstations which require mobile or wireless access to mainframe
CICS
Client/server installations using the CICS Clients may be
two-tier or three-tier. Two-tier client/server provides direct
interaction of CICS Clients with any CICS server, and offers the
simplest entry into client/server operation. Three-tier
client/server enables communication between client and server via an
intermediate CICS server; for example, CICS Clients communicating
with CICS/ESA by way of CICS for OS/2. Three-tier client/server
offers advantages of session concentration (resulting in reduced
network traffic), stand-in processing (some operations may be
continued in conditions where communication with the third tier
server is lost), and the use of local business unit applications and
data.
For customers running CICS with multiple users in a
workstation LAN environment, using for example CICS for
OS/2 Version 2.0.1 multi-user, the CICS Clients products should be
used. For customers who already have CICS OS/2 Version 2.0,
distributed feature clients continue to be available to allow them to
further extend existing client installations. However, the use of
CICS Clients is recommended as the preferred solution.
All CICS servers support open connectivity through SNA LU6.2;
some CICS servers support DCE RPC, and it is our intention to extend
this support together with support for ONC RPC and other connectivity
options to more members of the CICS family. However, CICS
InterSystem Communication (ISC) will continue to be enhanced and to
offer additional function and customer value beyond that provided by
the open connectivity options. Possible future enhancements include
extension of transport protocol support, and support for asynchronous
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 8
communication. CICS ISC will remain the preferred method of
interoperation between CICS systems, including interoperation between
CICS clients and CICS servers.

COMPATIBILITY: ECI and EPI client applications are portable between
members of the CICS Clients family, provided the application does not
contain operating system specific calls.
OS/2, DOS, and Windows ECI and EPI applications written for
clients of CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 will be portable at the binary level
to the corresponding members of the CICS Clients family. If these
applications are to be changed, or if they need to be ported to other
client platforms, the ECI call will require very minor changes before
recompiling.
The EPI and ECI may be called by any client program capable of
calling an external routine, in any language supported by the client
operating system.
This product uses existing interfaces.
LIMITATIONS: A single application on the CICS Client for OS/2, CICS
Client for Macintosh, or CICS Client for Windows will be able to have
an unlimited number of concurrent ECI conversations with CICS
servers. In the case of the CICS Client for DOS, it is limited to 16
concurrent ECI conversations. The calls may be to the same or
different servers, and may use different communications protocols.
Some limitations may be imposed by the communications protocols
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 11
themselves in the number of unique servers which may be concurrently
accessed. Updates across multiple servers from the same application
are not coordinated in the same logical unit of work.
When using the EPI or terminal emulation, a single client
application will be able to have up to 15 concurrent logical
terminals connected to CICS servers. The terminals may be connected
to the same or different servers, and may use different
communications protocols.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:
o Using the ECI, front-end presentation logic can be offloaded onto
client applications running on client machines. This could
potentially consume less server resources and hence increase
server capacity.
o When used with relatively less powerful client hardware,
performance of existing 3270 CICS applications using the EPI as
the front end may be degraded when compared with the same
application conversing with a real 3270 terminal. This is due to
the overhead of interpreting and extracting the 3270 data and
displaying it in a non-3270 form. Note that this overhead is
completely on the client, and the performance of the server
should be unaffected as it will be running the same existing 3270
application.
o When used with relatively less powerful client hardware, the
performance of the CICS 3270 emulation may be degraded when
compared with a real 3270 terminal for similar reasons.
o Client capacity is increased when compared with a 3270 terminal
as each client will support up to 16 concurrent calls to the same
or different CICS servers.

The program package upgrade option allows currently licensed
users of CICS OS/2 Version 2.0 distributed features to obtain the new
function for a program upgrade charge. The program upgrade to CICS
Clients is available from January 27, 1995. Orders will be accepted
after January 26, 1995.
These upgrades will be available through IBM Authorized
Personal Computer Dealers and Industry Remarketers -- Personal
Computers certified to market IBM Authorized Advanced Products. The
remarketer will require a Proof of License for each upgrade ordered.
The original Proof of License is the separate Proof of License for
Distributed Feature, or the customer invoice.

copy of this invoice or previously acquired Proof of Additional

Additional license upgrades can be entered through the local
IBM office using the IBM U.S. Upgrade and Certification Order Form
included in this announcement or ordered through an authorized
