OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
The main enhancements to DCAF Version 1.3 are:
o Support for TCP/IP and Novell IPX/SPX Targets
DCAF 1.3 provides direct connection between an OS/2 DCAF
Controller and OS/2, and DOS/Windows targets via these popular
communications protocols.
This function extends DCAF's "HELP DESK" facility to
targets in the TCP/IP and IPX/SPX environments.
The main benefits for customers are:
- The problem of providing DCAF "HELP DESK" for PC workstations
in these LAN environment is solved.
- Growth of LAN networks into LAN-to-LAN, WAN network, with a
centralized OS/2 DCAF Controller.
o Direct NetBIOS connection
This function allows a DCAF controller to communicate
DIRECTLY with a target DCAF station in a single or
inter-connected LAN. This eliminates the previous need for a
DCAF Token-Ring Gateway.
This solution simplifies the work of a LAN administrator,
and reduces the set-up and maintenance costs of DCAF Token-Ring
networks.
o APPN (R) Support
This support enhances DCAF configuration for LU6.2 by
taking advantage of APPN capabilities.
It enables the LAN Administrator to manage the network
more efficiently and effectively.
o Configuration, Installation and Distribution (CID) enabling
This support facilitates the remote and unattended
installation of DCAF components. This enables a LAN
administrator to perform maintenance tasks remotely. The
benefits are:
- Improved service and response time
- Reduced maintenance costs (travel time, software
distribution, and so on)
This implementation is complaint with the IBM CID
standard.
o Enhanced user interface for remote workstation definitions
An interactive graphical interface is provided for remote
workstation definitions within the DCAF controller dialog. In
addition, an Application Programming Interface (API) is also
provided for the definition of a large number of workstations
Now, users benefit from the use a graphical interface,
without first having to terminate the DCAF dialog, and with
immediate response to users' DCAF operations.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The Distributed Console Access Facility Version 1.3 is a
remote workstation access product that supports DOS, MS-Windows, and
OS/2 stations. In addition to full-screen text mode MS-Windows, OS/2
applications and OS/2 PM applications, it also provides:
o Support of MS-Windows Graphics running in STANDARD or ENHANCED
mode for IPX/SPX and TCP/IP connections.
o Support of OS/2 for Novell IPX/SPX and TCP/IP connections.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 7
DCAF Version 1.3 allows a variety of ways for central site
control/monitoring of workstations distributed across a LAN/WAN or
through a SNA network, as well as for performing functions from a
remote location, such as a user at home, to allow the user to take
over a workstation in the network.
Due to its capability, DCAF is part of several IBM systems and
network management solutions, for example, the IBM SystemView
Integrated Offering. DCAF is also the natural complement for other
IBM software and hardware products that, through DCAF functions,
acquire the capability to be remotely managed.

COMPATIBILITY: The Distributed Console Access Facility on an OS/2
station can establish a session with either another OS/2, DOS or
DOS/Windows station on a LAN that has DCAF installed.
DCAF 1.3 controlling workstations or DCAF 1.3 gateway
workstations can establish a session with DCAF 1.3, DCAF 1.2 CSD
UB09790, DCAF 1.2.1 Refresh, DCAF 1.1, DCAF 1.1 CSD UB09040 target
workstations.
DCAF 1.3 controlling workstations can establish a session with
DCAF 1.3, DCAF 1.2 CSD UB09790, DCAF 1.2.1 Refresh and DCAF 1.1 CSD
UB09040 gateways.
However, DCAF 1.1, DCAF 1.1 CSD UB09040, DCAF 1.2, DCAF 1.2.1
Refresh controlling workstations or respective DCAF gateways cannot
establish a session with DCAF 1.3 target workstations.
LIMITATIONS: DCAF 1.3 can be used to control OS/2 full-screen text
mode, as well as OS/2 PM applications that follow normal programming
conventions as defined by the operating system. It provides the
capability to jump from session to session on the target OS/2
station. However, graphic applications running in DOS VDM or Native
DOS and those running in OS/2 full-screen mode are skipped over.
DCAF 1.3 supports only seamless Windows applications running in the
Presentation Manager (R) (PM) screen group.
DCAF 1.3 has been designed to be an independent application.
However, DCAF DOS components could be in conflict with other DOS
applications that bypass BIOS interrupt 16H for keystroke
information.
In addition, some DOS applications, like the PC3270, can
prevent DCAF from refreshing the controlling workstation display.
DCAF 1.3 allows LU6.2 communications on OS/2-based
workstations. However, these functions are not available on
DOS-based stations. The direct asynchronous connection between DCAF
Controlling and Windows Target workstations is only for the
MS-Windows 3.1 Graphic environment.
DCAF 1.3 offers mouse support for OS/2 targets running, in the
foreground session, PM applications, or on DOS targets running
MS-Windows applications. Mouse operations are not supported for
targets running pure DOS applications.
Display drivers running up to 256 colors are supported.
However, the DCAF controlling workstation displays only 16 colors,
resulting in some color degradation.
DCAF 1.3 is not enabled for National Language Support (NLS).
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: As with any remote operation across a
communication link, performance of DCAF 1.3 is dictated primarily by
the bandwidth of the link. Performance across a SNA network must be
considered by the user when designing the network to run DCAF.
Additionally, performance in an OS/2 environment can be affected by
availability of system resources, the configuration of the operating
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 10
system, and the number of concurrent users and applications.
A significant performance improvement has been achieved for
DOS/Windows targets.
For ASYNC communications on OS/2 workstations, DCAF 1.3 can
configure line speeds up to 64Kbps.
PLANNING INFORMATION
RAM AND DASD: The memory and fixed disk required by Distributed
Console Access Facility Version 1.3 depends on the configuration
installed on each workstation (such as gateway, target, or
controlling station) as shown in the following table:

Since DCAF can communicate via LU6.2 across an SNA network, it
is the responsibility of the system administrator to ensure that
proper network SYSGENS are done to allow for SNA communication across
the network.
For SNA backbone to LAN communication (NetBIOS), the
distributed console gateway function must reside in an OS/2 station
either attached to the SNA backbone or downstream from a direct
LAN-attached 37xx controller.
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: For usage with switched asynchronous
communications, the customer must install appropriate modems and
phone facilities.
The customer's network administrator must ensure that proper
setup is done to allow an SNA LU6.2 communication path through the
SNA network for communications between the target and controlling
workstations.
