TITLE ENCINA CLIENT FOR OS/2
ABSTRACT The Encina** family of products is further extended with the
introduction of the Encina Client for OS/2 (R), Version 1.3. Based
on technology provided by the Transarc** Corporation (a wholly owned
IBM Subsidiary), the Encina Client for OS/2 brings the ability to
design and implement distributed, transactional applications that run
in a heterogeneous, networked computing environment to the
OS/2 platform. The Encina Client for OS/2 is fully interoperable
with Encina servers running on other platforms, such as AIX.
The Encina Client for OS/2 provides the Encina Base client and
the Encina Monitor client. In addition, the ability to issue system
administration commands for administering Encina Base servers and
Encina Monitor servers from an OS/2 client workstation is provided.
The Encina Client for OS/2 supports the development of
nonrecoverable Encina applications in the OS/2 environment and
provides the ability to interoperate with recoverable Encina
applications executing on Encina servers in multi-vendor,
multi-platform environments.
The Encina Client for OS/2 is fully configuration,
installation, and distribution (CID) enabled.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
INVESTMENT PROTECTION/GROWTH ENABLEMENT
IBM's transaction processing products for OS/2 and AIX (R) extend the
services provided by the OS/2 DCE client and DCE for AIX with the
following benefits realized by a distributed enterprise computing
environment:
o Horizontal growth realized; value in current hardware investment
is preserved and extended
o Ease of distributed transaction application development
o Modularity to provide flexibility in adding function as needs
warrant
Transaction processing services are becoming a fundamental
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 2
service that all distributed applications can strategically utilize
and exploit.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
Businesses have become increasingly more dependent on access to their
enterprise data, and data users demand access in a timely and
reliable manner. Also, it is vitally important that the following
properties not be compromised:
o A single unit of work, represented by a transaction, must either
complete correctly or not at all.
o The transaction updates the database consistently.
o One transaction does not influence another transaction.
o Transactions are backed up in the event of a failure and are
completed successfully upon system recovery.
The Encina product family meets these criteria, which are
often referred to as the ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and
Durability) properties.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
Encina Client for OS/2 in conjunction with other Encina products,
such as Encina Server for AIX, augment the basic DCE functionality
with transactional integrity, providing customers with the confidence
that data used to run their businesses is both reliably maintained
and efficiently retrievable. Customers and independent software
vendors developing applications are able to exploit the transaction
processing features to build data integrity into their distributed
systems.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Encina products provide a basic set of administrative functions
required to manage a distributed transaction processing environment.
Many of these functions take advantage of the underlying services
supplied by the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE).
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The Encina family of products provides a multi-layered,
modular architecture that offers the flexibility to build solutions
for many different customer requirements.
The Encina Monitor is designed to enhance and exploit the
distributed transaction services provided by the combination of the
Encina Server for AIX and DCE for AIX. Transaction processing
applications written using Encina products facilitate data sharing
and interprocess communication to create flexible, efficient, and
reliable OLTP solutions. With Encina Client for OS/2, transaction
processing services are extended to the Intel platform.

PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: Programming requirements for OS/2 and AIX
DCE:
DCE is available on many different hardware platforms running
different operating systems. Because DCE uses the client/server
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
paradigm, customers have the flexibility to mix client workstations
from different vendors and also to mix server workstations from
different vendors.
The DCE administrative domain is called a cell, which is a
combination of client and server workstations. The cell is defined
by the customer. A minimum DCE cell requires the installation of one
DCE cell directory server, one DCE security server, and a number of
DCE clients.
A distributed system would typically be configured as a number
of client workstations attached to a LAN with one instance of the DCE
cell directory server in the LAN and one instance of the DCE security
server in the LAN. Because the servers in the network also request
services, the client code (DCE Base feature) must be installed on
every server workstation as well.
Programming requirements for Encina products:
o The Encina Base feature must be installed on every workstation in
the cell. This is the Encina Base Client component of Encina
Client for OS/2.
o At least one instance of the Encina Server for AIX must be
installed in the cell.
o The Encina Server for AIX must be installed on every application
server that accesses an X-/Open-compliant database.
o If the Encina Monitor for AIX is installed, one instance of the
Encina Structured File Server for AIX must be installed in the
cell.
o The Encina Monitor for AIX must be installed on every server that
contains resources managed by the Monitor.
o To access a resource managed by the Encina Monitor, the Encina
Monitor Client component of Encina Client for OS/2 must be
installed on the OS/2 workstation.
NOTE: Customers can mix Encina Server workstations from different
vendors.
PACKAGING: The Encina Client for OS/2 program package contains:
o Three 3.5-inch diskette (2.0MB capacity -- double sided)
o One license information booklet
o One Proof of License
o One Program License Agreement booklet
