TITLE IBM ANYNET IPX OVER SNA GATEWAY FOR OS/2
ABSTRACT The AnyNet (TM) IPX over SNA Gateway for OS/2 (R), Version 1.0
provides IPX connectivity across SNA networks. To the IPX network,
the IPX over SNA gateway has the appearance of a NetWare** router.
It provides the service and routing information protocols required to
participate in IPX connectivity.
The IPX over SNA Gateway fully protects the SNA backbone by
"firewalling" IPX broadcasts. It automatically learns the locations
of local servers, and sends information about changes to partner
gateways only as needed. It also uses data compression and traffic
prioritization (COS) available in Communications Manager/2 to provide
bandwidth beyond rated links for the backbone network. All of the
traditional benefits of SNA networks (such as reliability and
predictable response time) are available to IPX traffic routed
through the AnyNet IPX over SNA gateway.
The AnyNet Gateway is available in four gateway sizes. The
low price entry size meets the needs of small remote offices by
providing support for 20 local workstations. The 100, 250, 500
workstation sizes support small, medium and large networks. You can
change the size of the AnyNet IPX over SNA Gateway by simply using a
password -- you do not have to reinstall or reconfigure anything.
The different sized gateways are separately priced to provide the
most cost-effective gateway solution for multiprotocol networking.
No special hardware is required. You only need a workstation
running OS/2 with the appropriate network interface cards to connect
to the LAN and the WAN.
PRICE RANGE: $600 -- $2,500

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
The IBM AnyNet IPX over SNA Gateway for OS/2 can connect your
IPX networks across a SNA backbone as shown below. To be fully
compatible with the NetWare implementation of IPX, the IPX over SNA
gateway appears as a NetWare router to the IPX network. The gateway
implements the Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) and Routing
Information Protocol (RIP) used in NetWare IPX to provide
connectivity to remote IPX services. The IPX over SNA gateway uses a
link state algorithm that protects the SNA backbone from broadcast
traffic. Only when there is a change in the IPX network is
information sent across the network. This link state algorithm
allows optimum utilization of the bandwidth on the backbone WAN,
while providing connectivity information required for IPX stations to
access services on the network. In addition to protecting the SNA
backbone from broadcast traffic, the IPX over SNA gateway can use
Communications Manager for OS/2's data compression to give
performance beyond the stated bandwidth rating of the network. All
of the traditional benefits of a SNA network, such as reliability and
predictable response time, become available to IPX traffic routed
through the AnyNet IPX over SNA gateway.
No special hardware is required, only a workstation running
OS/2 with the appropriate network interface cards to connect to the
LAN and the WAN.
The AnyNet IPX over SNA Gateway is available in four sizes.
When you initially order your gateway, you select a capacity level of
20, 100, 250, or 500 concurrent workstations. A password is provided
to unlock that capacity. As your network grows, select the AnyNet
IPX over SNA Size Increase Kit which meets your connectivity needs.
The kit contains a password that increases the capacity of your
existing gateway. Users need only to rerun the configuration menu
where prompts will guide you to enter the new password. There is no
need for reinstallation or reconfiguration of your existing gateway.

SOLUTION SIZING AND GROWTH
The AnyNet IPX over SNA Gateway provides multiple sizes to allow the
most cost effective solutions tailored to your network design. The
AnyNet Gateway also allows you to increase the gateway size with no
re-installation or re-configuration.
NEW APPLICATIONS ENABLEMENT
Significant business solutions are provided by enabling IPX LANs to
communicate across a SNA network. Any client/server application that
runs on a NetWare Network Operating System (NOS), like Lotus** Notes
or NetWare Management Services (NMS), can now be extended nationwide
and worldwide.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
FUTURE GROWTH
AnyNet allows you to grow networked applications independent of the
underlying transport protocol.
IMPROVED PROGRAMMER PRODUCTIVITY
Programmers can now write applications to their preferred interface
and the applications can run over different network protocols. No
application rewrite is required for a new network environment. This
means less to learn, less to change, and less to maintain in IPX LANs
and SNA networks.
BROAD APPLICATION ACCESS
End users on IPX LANs can now access and communicate with other IPX
LANs worldwide across SNA networks. Less effort and cost is required
by system programmers, network planners, and administrators to
achieve this connectivity.
REDUCED NETWORK COMPLEXITY
The IBM AnyNet IPX over SNA Gateway for OS/2 allows customers to
reuse lines and equipment, resulting in reduced cost. It also allows
customers to continue to use the extensive network management of the
SNA network. Since the AnyNet product family can help customers
reduce the number of physical and logical networks required, the
resultant network is simpler and less costly to manage and maintain.
The configuration of AnyNet IPX over SNA Gateway allows the
association of Class of Service (COS) and priority per
gateway-gateway pair. A specific mode name can also be associated
with a gateway-gateway pair, such that traffic for one gateway pair
can be configured to have a higher priority than another. Session
level security allows verification of the identity of the partner
gateway before session setup.
AnyNet is also configuration, installation, and distribution
(CID) and national language support (NLS) enabled for simplified
product management and worldwide support.
ANYNET FAMILY OF PRODUCTS AWARDS
IBM's AnyNet products have won two awards in the past year!
DATA COMMUNICATIONS magazine chose AnyNet/2 as a, "Hot
Product" for 1994. Each year, DATA COMMUNICATIONS selects 30-40,
"Hot Products" which are technically innovative and address specific
needs in complex networks.
NETWORK WORLD magazine chose AnyNet for the 1993 Enterprise
Technology Award for Middleware. Network World's award recognized
IBM as a supplier whose products work best in a multiprotocol,
multivendor environment.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
AnyNet provides customer flexibility and cost advantages by
allowing customers to add new applications and reuse their existing
network backbone instead of adding a new network to enable needed
applications. For example, an existing SNA backbone can be used to
carry LAN IPX traffic rather than using routers or adding an IPX
backbone.
AnyNet provides customers with an easy, quick, and low-cost
solution for continued use of existing protocol dependent
applications when changing the underlying transport network. In
addition, AnyNet provides for adding applications to non-native
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
protocol environments quickly and inexpensively. Customers with a
need to connect IPX LANs across SNA networks should use AnyNet, which
does not require any additional hardware. AnyNet solutions are
distinct from the routers by providing increased connectivity at a
lower cost. AnyNet is distinct from middleware solutions in that no
application changes are required.
