TITLE IBM ANYNET SNA OVER TCP/IP GATEWAY FOR OS/2
ABSTRACT The AnyNet (TM) SNA over TCP/IP Gateway for OS/2 (R),
Version 1.0 connects IP networks and SNA networks to enable
communication between SNA applications.
This gateway delivers a set of four gateway sizes, providing
you with optimal cost-effective choices. The low-priced entry size
meets the needs of small, remote offices by providing support for 20
sessions. The 100, 250, and 500 session sizes support small, medium
and large networks. The size of the AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP Gateway
can be changed by simply using a password -- no reinstall or
reconfigure is required, except to enter the new password.
In conjunction with the AnyNet products -- that run on OS/2,
MVS/ESA (TM), AIX (R), and AS/400 (R) -- networks can run SNA
applications in IP attached workstations or hosts and communicate
seamlessly into native SNA environments. The following shows a
sample environment:

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
The IBM AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP Gateway for OS/2 connects IP

networks and SNA networks to enable communication between SNA
applications. In conjunction with the AnyNet product that runs on
OS/2, MVS, AIX, or OS/400, networks can run SNA applications in IP
attached workstations or hosts and communicate seamlessly into native
SNA environments.

NOTE: Node A may be any existing platform than runs SNA.
Both dependent LU (for example, LU0, LU1, LU2, LU3) and
independent LU 6.2 communication are supported. Dependent LU
communication requires the dependent LU server and requester function
that was shipped in VTAM (R) Version 4 Release 2.
NOTE: For dependent LU communication through the gateway, the
Dependent LU Server (DLUS) must reside in the SNA network and the
Dependent LU Requester (DLUR) must reside on the IP network.

Multiple AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP Gateways can seamlessly
connect SNA networks and IP networks. This is done without change to
the SNA network, independent LU 6.2 applications or IP network.

The AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP Gateway is available in four sizes.
When initially ordering the gateway, you select a capacity level of
20, 100, 250, or 500 concurrent sessions. A password is provided to
unlock that capacity. If your network grows, select the IBM AnyNet
SNA over TCP/IP Gateway for OS/2 Size Increase Kit which meets your
connectivity needs. The kit contains a password that increases the
capacity of your existing gateway. Users need only to rerun the
configuration menu where prompts will guide you to enter the new
password. That's all! There is no need for reinstallation or
reconfiguration of your existing gateway.
SOLUTION SIZING AND GROWTH
The AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP Gateway provides multiple sizes to allow

the most cost effective solutions tailored to your network design.
The AnyNet Gateway also allows you to increase the gateway size with
no reinstallation or reconfiguration.
APPLICATION PORTABILITY THROUGH STANDARDS SUPPORT
After publishing the GUIDE TO MPTN ARCHITECTURE last December, X/Open
has now published the first results of its technical work on MPTN:
The Access Node, Address Mapper, and Data Formats Preliminary
Specifications (ISBN 1 85912 040 7, ISBN 1 85912 039 3, and ISBN 1
85912 043 1 respectfully). This is our response to a high priority
requirement placed on us by our User Council. We hope these
specifications will lead to multiple implementations, bringing to
market the benefits of a scheme promising to preserve the enormous
investment in current distributed applications, while adding
flexibility in choice of the underlying transport service.

NEW APPLICATIONS ENABLEMENT
Significant business solutions are provided by enabling SNA
applications, such as CICS (TM), to communicate across an IP network
whether on a LAN, nationwide or worldwide.
FUTURE GROWTH
AnyNet allows you to grow networked applications independent of the
underlying transport protocol.
IMPROVED PROGRAMMER PRODUCTIVITY
Programmers can now write applications to their preferred interface
and the applications can run over different network protocols. No
application rewrite is required for a new network environment. This
means less to learn, less to change, and less to maintain in SNA and
IP networks.
BROAD APPLICATION ACCESS
End users with SNA applications can now access and communicate with
other SNA applications worldwide across IP networks. Less effort and
cost is required by system programmers, network planners, and
administrators to achieve this connectivity.
REDUCED NETWORK COMPLEXITY
Since the AnyNet product family can help customers reduce the number
of physical and logical networks required, the resultant network is
simpler and less costly to maintain. AnyNet is also configuration,
installation, and distribution (CID) and national language support
(NLS) enabled for simplified product management and worldwide
support.
ANYNET FAMILY OF PRODUCTS AWARDS
IBM's AnyNet products have won two awards over the past year!
DATA COMMUNICATIONS magazine chose AnyNet/2 as a, "Hot
Product" for 1994. Each year, DATA COMMUNICATIONS selects 30-40,
"Hot Products" which are technically innovative and address specific
needs in complex networks.
NETWORK WORLD magazine chose AnyNet for the 1993 Enterprise
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
Technology Award for Middleware. Network World's award recognized
IBM as a supplier whose products work best in a multiprotocol,
multivendor environment.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The IBM AnyNet SNA over TCP/IP Gateway for OS/2 connects SNA
networks and IP networks to enable communication between SNA
applications. AnyNet provides customer migration and flexibility
advantages. AnyNet provides customers with an easy, quick, and low
cost solution for continued use of existing protocol dependent
applications when changing the underlying transport network.
In addition, AnyNet provides for adding applications to
non-native protocol environments quickly and inexpensively.
Customers with a need to connect SNA applications across IP networks
should use AnyNet.
AnyNet software solutions do not require any additional
hardware beyond the gateway itself. AnyNet is distinct from other
middleware solutions in that no application changes are required nor
are new APIs introduced.
