  13. ABSTRACT         Now you can talk directly into your computer and create text   
  14.           faster than most people can type, using the highly accurate speech    
  15.           recognition solution -- IBM VoiceType (TM) Dictation for OS/2 (R).    
  16.           The text you create can be saved to a file or integrated with other   
  17.           applications for formatting and editing.  You can also control the    
  18.           OS/2 Workplace Shell (R) and applications by speaking in the same     
  19.           language as your version of IBM VoiceType Dictation.                  
  20.                  VoiceType Dictation uses proven technology based on more than  
  21.           two decades of IBM experience that was previously available in the    
  22.           award-winning IBM Personal Dictation System.  By making speech        
  23.           recognition available to the millions of PC users, VoiceType          
  24.           Dictation represents a major change in the way you work with your     
  25.           computer.                                                             
  26.                  A sophisticated statistical language model that understands    
  27.           common word patterns and a detailed understanding of your voice       
  28.           allows VoiceType Dictation to convert your speech accurately to text. 
  29.           Words that sound alike such as TO, TOO, and TWO are easily handled.   
  30.                  The product includes a general office vocabulary of over       
  31.           22,000 words.  You can add up to 2,000 words of your choosing while   
  32.           dictating.  To make the system even more accurate, VoiceType          
  33.           Dictation can be tailored to various professions like medicine and    
  34.           journalism with specialty vocabularies designed specifically for      
  35.           them.                                                                 
  36.                  With VoiceType Dictation, you won't need to stop and make      
  37.           corrections as you are dictating; you can edit after you complete     
  38.           your thoughts.  VoiceType can even talk back to you and replay what   
  39.           you said, so that you never have to rely on memory to get the details 
  40.           right.                                                                
  41.                  IBM VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 Version 1.1 requires          
  42.           OS/2 2.1, or later (including OS/2 Warp), and a personal computer     
  43.           with the appropriate IBM VoiceType Dictation Adapter and a            
  44.           486SX-25MHz, or higher, processor (including Pentium** processors).

  94. OVERVIEW  DESCRIPTION                                                           
  95.                  IBM VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 is a highly accurate, large   
  96.           vocabulary speech recognition program that converts speech to text.   
  97.           In many cases it can recognize words that are run together, slurred,  
  98.           or partially obscured by background noise.  The product includes a    
  99.           language model that understands common word pattern usage.            
  100.                  VoiceType Dictation includes a general business, office        
  101.           vocabulary.  IBM has optimized the size of the vocabulary for         
  102.           performance and accuracy.  This optimization, in combination with the 
  103.           language model, results in a program that can be faster and more      
  104.           accurate than products with a larger vocabulary.  Users can also add  
  105.           up to 2,000 words of their own to the vocabulary.                     
  106.           DICTATION                                                             
  107.           The general business language vocabulary included with VoiceType      
  108.           Dictation for OS/2 can be utilized by a variety of users who need to  
  109.           create and edit text.  Users who would be especially interested are   
  110.           corporate users of E-mail and word processing systems, executives,    
  111.           students, and technical writers.  The ability to use verbal short     
  112.           cuts for lists, standard headings, and command sequences can increase 
  113.           productivity of these users.  In addition, users who type slowly can  
  114.           achieve greater speed and accuracy.                                   
  115.                  The sophisticated adaptive capability of the system to learn   
  116.           users' dictation styles and accents can allow students who speak

  124.           accuracy.  Technical writers can easily add special and foreign words 
  125.           to the system.  Translators may want to explore combining the         
  126.           VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 with the IBM Translation Manager (TM/2)  
  127.           product for higher quality output.                                    
  128.                  VoiceType Dictation includes a vocabulary of over 22,000       
  129.           words, an associated general office language vocabulary supporting    
  130.           U.S. English or Spanish dictation, and a spelling dictionary of       
  131.           100,000 words.  Text is dictated into a dictation window and can be   
  132.           transferred into applications running as Presentation Manager (R)     
  133.           applications, in OS/2 Windows, DOS Windows, or WIN-OS/2 (TM) Windows. 
  134.                  VoiceType Dictation temporarily stores users' spoken words.    
  135.           Users can listen to their spoken words to assist in the correction of 
  136.           dictated text.  A loudspeaker is required if this feature of the      
  137.           product is used.  Because the spoken word file can be quite large,    
  138.           the spoken word acoustic file is erased once the dictation is         
  139.           corrected and stored as coded text.  The coded text file is much      
  140.           smaller than the spoken acoustic file, using far less disk storage.   
  141.           END-USER PRODUCTIVITY                                                 
  142.           GENERAL BUSINESS:                                                     
  143.           o   Eliminated or reduced time proofreading, correcting, typing, and  
  144.               waiting for transcribing.                                         
  145.           o   Faster capture of information from individuals who have limited

  164.           VOICE MANAGER:  The Voice Manager is a key part of IBM VoiceType      
  165.           Dictation.  The Voice Manager provides two broad categories of        
  166.           speech-related capabilities:                                          
  167.           o   Navigation                                                        
  168.           o   Dictation                                                         
  169.           The Voice Manager navigation function automatically speech-enables    
  170.           the OS/2 Workplace Shell and selected OS/2 applications that          
  171.           internally use the standard Presentation Manager user interface       
  172.           controls, such as menus, dialog boxes, and list boxes.  Users can,    
  173.           for example, speak the words that appear in the menu bar, push        
  174.           buttons, check boxes, and radio buttons of standard Presentation

  181.           Manager applications.  Speech commands are also available to scroll   
  182.           client application areas and list boxes.                              
  183.                  For navigation, the national language of the operating system  
  184.           and the selected OS/2 application must be the same as the national    
  185.           language version of the IBM VoiceType Dictation for OS/2.             
  186.                  Other OS/2 applications can be speech-enabled by defining      
  187.           voice macros for them (an application that responds to voice through  
  188.           the use of these functions is speech-enabled).  Voice macros allow    
  189.           users to define a sequence of actions that can later be started by    
  190.           speaking a simple command.  The macros can also emulate keyboard      
  191.           functions.                                                            
  192.                  The Voice Manager provides function for the creation of text   
  193.           macros and for the easy transfer of dictated text to other            
  194.           applications.  Text macros allow users to create standard text that   
  195.           can be included in the dictation window with a simple spoken command. 
  196.           Use of text macros can significantly increase the user's overall      
  197.           dictation speed.  Dictated text can be transferred to another         
  198.           application such as a word processor through the use of cut and       
  199.           paste.                                                                
  200.           SPEECH-ENABLED APPLICATIONS:  The Voice Manager provides a quick,     
  201.           easy way for users to bring the power of speech recognition to        
  202.           existing applications.  The Voice Manager supports speech-enabling    
  203.           applications through three of its functions:                          
  204.           o   Automatic enablement                                              
  205.           o   Command macros                                                    
  206.           o   Text transfer                                                     
  207.                  The U.S. English version of IBM VoiceType Dictation for        
  208.           OS/2 has been tested with the following applications.  The listed     
  209.           applications are compatible with the Voice Manager functions of       
  210.           automatic enablement, command macros, and text transfer.              
  211.           o   OS/2 PM Workplace Shell Version 2.1                               
  212.           o   OS/2 System Editor Version 2.1                                    
  213.           o   OS/2 Communications Manager 3270 Emulator Version 2.0             
  214.           o   DeScribe** for OS/2 Version 4.0                                   
  215.           o   Lotus** Notes** for OS/2 Version 3.0                              
  216.           o   Lotus 1-2-3** for OS/2 Version 1.1                                
  217.           o   Microsoft** Word** for OS/2 Version 1.1                           
  218.           o   WordPerfect** for OS/2 Version 5.2                                
  219.                  For navigation, the national language of the operating system  
  220.           and the application must correspond to the language of IBM VoiceType  
  221.           Dictation for OS/2 Version 1.1.                                       
  222.                  Additional OS/2 2.1 and Presentation Manager applications may  
  223.           work, though IBM has not tested them at this time.                    
  224.           INVESTMENT PROTECTION -- APPLICATIONS INVESTMENT:  With IBM VoiceType 
  225.           Dictation for OS/2, existing applications are protected and extended. 
  226.           Text created by voice can be passed directly to applications for      
  227.           document production without an intermediate step such as              
  228.           transcribing.

  242.                  The VoiceType Dictation for Windows and VoiceType Dictation    
  243.           for OS/2 are stand-alone products with the same function.  Selection  
  244.           should be made based on your operating system environment.  VoiceType 
  245.           Dictation for OS/2 replaces the previously announced IBM Personal     
  246.           Dictation System.                                                     
  247.                  IBM, in addition, offers the following speech recognition      
  248.           product:                                                              
  249.           o   IBM Continuous Speech Series                                      
  250.           The IBM Continuous Speech Series (ICSS) is a command-and-control      
  251.           product for applications that are transaction-oriented (such as stock 
  252.           sales, inventory manipulation, and information retrieval).  ICSS      
  253.           operates with well-defined grammar and a highly structured,           
  254.           predictable, medium-sized vocabulary.  Whereas, the VoiceType         
  255.           Dictation for Windows and VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 are dictation  
  256.           products with a large flexible vocabulary for general office use.  In 
  257.           addition, industry specific language models are available for         
  258.           VoiceType Dictation for Windows and VoiceType Dictation for OS/2.     
  259.           ICSS is not an end-user product but is intended for developers to     
  260.           imbed English speech recognition function into their Windows, OS/2,   
  261.           or AIX (R) applications.

  339.                  For navigation, the national language of the operating system

  421.           The microphone has been tested and is compatible for use with the IBM 
  422.           VoiceType Adapters and IBM VoiceType Dictation application software.  
  423.                  The microphone is designed to capture your voice at close      
  424.           range and reject background noise.  Excessive background noise can    
  425.           affect speech recognition accuracy.                                   
  426.           LIMITATIONS:  Limitations with IBM VoiceType Dictation for OS/2       
  427.           Version 1.1:                                                          
  428.           o   If another language should be installed together with U.S.        
  429.               English, U.S. English must be installed first.  Languages other   
  430.               than U.S. English can be installed in any order.                  
  431.           o   VoiceType Dictation and its files should not be compressed with   
  432.               disk compression utilities such as Stacker** and DoubleSpace**.   
  433.           o   VoiceType Dictation may not work with all processor upgrade       
  434.               boards.                                                           
  435.           The VoiceType Dictation software does not currently support the sense 
  436.           input audio interfaces on the VoiceType Dictation Adapters.           
  437.                  The VoiceType PCMCIA Adapter can be "hot plugged" into or out  
  438.           of a PCMCIA slot when the VoiceType Dictation application software is 
  439.           not active.  The adapter must be present to start the VoiceType       
  440.           Dictation application software.                                       
  441.                  The IBM ThinkPad 750C is supported by the IBM VoiceType        
  442.           Dictation PCMCIA Adapter but not by either the IBM VoiceType          
  443.           Dictation ISA Adapter or Micro Channel Adapter.                       
  444.           PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  Speech recognition requires significant  
  445.           system resources to provide satisfactory response.  Particular        
  446.           attention should be paid to the system requirements, which should be  
  447.           considered minimum system requirements.  Performance can be           
  448.           influenced by many factors, but three key areas are processor power,  
  449.           available memory, and OS/2 swapper disk space.                        
  450.                  As for processor speed, faster machines provide a quicker      
  451.           response to any user-initiated function whether it be by keyboard or  
  452.           spoken commands.  As with a keyboard, processor speed does not affect 
  453.           recognition accuracy.  On a faster machine, you will notice all       
  454.           speech recognition functions completed faster.  For example, if you   
  455.           speak at a specific dictation rate, then on a faster machine the      
  456.           translation of the spoken words into recognized text will complete    
  457.           faster.  For rapid input on a slow processor, one can notice that     
  458.           there is a delay after the dictated input completes and the           
  459.           translation of this input into text finally appears on the screen.    
  460.           This delay is less on faster processors.                              
  461.                  If you use relatively large programs (such as a word           
  462.           processor) with the speech recognition system, then sufficient RAM    
  463.           for both programs is useful to prevent excessive swapping.  (One can  
  464.           notice the effect of swapping even on the word processing alone if    
  465.

  471.           real RAM is reduced.)  In addition, sufficient contiguous disk space  
  472.           and a 32-bit file system greatly improve the ability to do swapping   
  473.           rapidly.

  476.           PLANNING INFORMATION                                                  
  477.           CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  The customer must provide at least the    
  478.           minimum hardware and software environments in which the VoiceType     
  479.           Dictation for OS/2 will operate.                                      
  480.                  Each user must enroll on the system to insure the system can   
  481.           recognize each individual's pronunciation of words.  The enrollment   
  482.           process also helps users learn the "discrete" speech pattern          
  483.           understood by VoiceType Dictation, wherein users leave a short clear  
  484.           space between words.  This results in very high accuracy and near     
  485.           instant recognition.                                                  
  486.                  The customer is responsible for selecting and installing an    
  487.           optional loudspeaker and the related cables.  The loudspeaker does    
  488.           not need to be an expensive unit, but it should have the following    
  489.           characteristics:                                                      
  490.           o   Amplified loudspeaker                                             
  491.           o   Monaural (stereo speakers are not required)                       
  492.           o   Volume and tone controls                                          
  493.                  An example of a loudspeaker that has performed satisfactorily  
  494.           is the Radio Shack 32-2040 compact one-watt speaker/amplifier.        
  495.                  It is recommended that the customer use the microphone         
  496.           included in the Solution Pac from IBM.  If the customer prefers a     
  497.           different microphone, care should be used in selecting an alternative 
  498.           microphone since the selection can influence speech recognition       
  499.           accuracy.  An alternative microphone should be very high quality and  
  500.           designed for close-range pickup to reduce background noise.  The      
  501.           microphone must have a flat audio frequency response range.  It is    
  502.           recommended enrollment be performed with the alternative microphone   
  503.           selected.  One sample of microphone characteristics that has been     
  504.           tested with IBM VoiceType Dictation for OS/2 Version 1.1, U.S.
