  14. ABSTRACT         With Version 2.0 of IBM VisualAge (TM) for OS/2 (R) and        
  15.           Version 2.0 of IBM VisualAge for Windows+, IBM continues its          
  16.           commitment to provide integrated, object-oriented application         
  17.           development environments designed especially for client/server,       
  18.           mission-critical, line-of-business applications through visual        
  19.           programming and construction-from-parts technologies.  VisualAge      
  20.           provides a series of high-productivity, object-oriented power tools   
  21.           for the development of OS/2 and Windows applications.                 
  22.                  There are two base products for each platform:                 
  23.           o   VisualAge -- entry-level product for individual programmers       
  24.           o   VisualAge Team -- advanced product for individuals or teams       
  25.                  The VisualAge product for individual programmers is a          
  26.           stand-alone product.  It does not install as the client under         
  27.           VisualAge Team.  VisualAge Team provides all the functionality of     
  28.           VisualAge, plus support for version control, central reporting for    
  29.           classes, and configuration management.  Each member of a development  
  30.           team must have a VisualAge Team license.  VisualAge Team is also

  98. OVERVIEW  OVERVIEW                                                              
  99.           VisualAge is an object-oriented application development environment   
  100.           and suite of power tools based on a visual construction-from-parts    
  101.           architecture that enables the development of the client portion of    
  102.           client/server applications with very complex GUIs.                    
  103.                  Within its object-oriented development environment, VisualAge  
  104.           provides visual programming.  This technology enables the developer   
  105.           to work with the end user in an iterative manner to develop user      
  106.           interfaces and accurately map to the required business logic.         
  107.                  Reuse is one element of object-oriented programming that puts  
  108.           real power into the user's hands; VisualAge provides many             
  109.           opportunities for reuse.  VisualAge was developed using VisualAge     
  110.           itself.  This assures that the design and code supplied with          
  111.           VisualAge have been tested and optimized.  The capability to reuse    
  112.           existing code reduces development cycle time and drastically reduces  
  113.           errors, because many of the components can be reused without change.

  125.           tools (editors, browsers, debuggers, and inspectors).  VisualAge Team 
  126.           adds advanced and team programming capabilities to the environment,   
  127.           multiplying the value derived from the technologies.  VisualAge and   
  128.           VisualAge Team enable developers of various skill and experience      
  129.           levels to create mission-critical, client/server applications.        
  130.           VisualAge opens the door to these technologies and, over time, IBM    
  131.           plans to address additional development environments and expand its   
  132.           communications and database access capabilities.                      
  133.           DESCRIPTION                                                           
  134.                  VisualAge is written in IBM Smalltalk, a pure object-oriented  
  135.           language.  Using this technology, VisualAge provides an architecture  
  136.           and a rich set of application-enabling functions that support         
  137.           application construction from reusable components, including          
  138.           pre-existing third generation language (3GL) and fourth generation    
  139.           language (4GL) elements.  VisualAge provides visual GUI development   
  140.           capabilities so that complex CUA (TM)-compliant screens can be built  
  141.           quickly and easily.  VisualAge also provides the protocols that       
  142.           enable the GUI front-ends to run with newly created object-oriented   
  143.           applications or with pre-existing applications.                       
  144.                  VisualAge provides an open architecture via published          
  145.           interfaces.  Through this approach, components created by the         
  146.           customer can easily be added to the development environment.  This    
  147.           approach also encourages others to create GUI development tools and   
  148.           support tools (communications, database access, pre-existing code     
  149.           access, and class libraries) that work with VisualAge.                
  150.                  Applications developed with VisualAge for either OS/2 or       
  151.           Windows are portable to the other platform, without rewriting the     
  152.           application code.  Using the Team development feature, an application 
  153.           developer using either a Windows or OS/2 client can store and reuse   
  154.           application source code in a common source code manager on the LAN.   
  155.           This allows multiple, heterogeneous development clients (OS/2 or      
  156.           Windows) to access, store, and reuse source code common to both       
  157.           platforms.  Once the application is completed, you can build a        
  158.           platform-specific, executable IMAGE file using the target platform    
  159.           development environment.  With this capability, you can create an     
  160.           application once and then easily port it to the other platform.       
  161.           ENABLING NEW APPLICATIONS                                             
  162.           The VisualAge AS/400 Feature, announced today, provides visual        
  163.           programming parts and client code for accessing a wide range of       
  164.           AS/400 services, objects, and data including:                         
  165.           o   Records and files                                                 
  166.           o   Record descriptions                                               
  167.           o   Programs via remote program call                                  
  168.           o   Commands                                                          
  169.           o   Data areas and data queues                                        
  170.           o   System values and network attributes                              
  171.           o   User spaces                                                       
  172.                  These parts can be graphically connected via the VisualAge     
  173.           Team composition editor to other parts of an application and packaged 
  174.           for distribution without any run-time charge.

  181.           ENABLE CUSTOMER'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE                               
  182.           VisualAge provides value to the customer by enabling developers to be 
  183.           more productive through ease of use, providing improved quality and   
  184.           maintainability through reuse of code, and facilitating the           
  185.           development of complex graphical user interfaces.  VisualAge also     
  186.           provides a natural evolution from prototyping into production.        
  187.                  Less experienced users can become productive very quickly,     
  188.           because the levels of abstraction in VisualAge remove the need to     
  189.           understand databases and communication protocols.  Users who are not  
  190.           literate in object-oriented programming can develop significant       
  191.           applications without moving into the underlying IBM Smalltalk code.   
  192.           With this capability, the user can develop the client portion of very 
  193.           sophisticated client/server applications much more quickly than with  
  194.           traditional application development tools, producing higher-quality   
  195.           applications and reducing maintenance costs.  More experienced users  
  196.           may choose to access the underlying IBM Smalltalk code and create     
  197.           components that may be reused.                                        
  198.                  IBM Smalltalk, the pure object-oriented language used to write 
  199.           VisualAge, can be used as a scripting language or as a complete       
  200.           programming language.  For example, existing components can be        
  201.           combined through the visual programming interface, existing           
  202.           components can be modified through the scripting language, or         
  203.           completely new components can be created in native IBM Smalltalk.     
  204.           TIME TO MARKET                                                        
  205.           VisualAge supports logical separation of the client from the server,  
  206.           simplifying interface design and implementation, and provides         
  207.           high-level abstractions that hide the interface to the network        
  208.           protocols.  This functionality results in the client portion of       
  209.           client/server applications being built in less time with higher       
  210.           quality and lower cost.  You will be able to respond more quickly to  
  211.           changes in the marketplace due to shorter lead times for application  
  212.           development.  This responsiveness is a key factor in the choice of

  220.           application.  Prototyping and evolution of the user interface can     
  221.           occur without requiring changes to the programming of the underlying  
  222.           business objects or full development of the business logic.           
  223.                  Graphical user interfaces and line-of-business applications    
  224.           can be developed with VisualAge in a highly productive environment,   
  225.           using the rapid prototyping, prototyping-to-production, and code      
  226.           reuse capabilities of object-oriented programming.  The applications  
  227.           developed with VisualAge provide end users with easy-to-use graphical 
  228.           displays for their workstations.

  230.           re-implementation of applications, particularly those that can        
  231.           benefit most from a CUA '91 user interface.

  239.           Design via prototyping through the object-oriented paradigm enables   
  240.           the developer to work iteratively with the end user to ensure the     
  241.           application meets requirements, avoiding misunderstanding and rework. 
  242.           The reuse of components is encouraged in this methodology, resulting  
  243.           in applications based on previously tested code.                      
  244.                  The iterative design and development approach leads to         
  245.           improved application quality and higher customer satisfaction with    
  246.           the resultant application than is typical with traditional            
  247.           development paradigms.  The resulting application is what the         
  248.           customer wants and needs, dramatically reducing fixes and rework and, 
  249.           therefore, end user false starts and inefficient use of the           
  250.           application.                                                          
  251.           IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY                                          
  252.           VisualAge enables application development based on an                 
  253.           object-oriented, construction-from-parts architecture.  This approach 
  254.           provides an integrated "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) user  
  255.           interface tool that permits the user to select interface parts from a 
  256.           palette, size and align the parts as appropriate, and iteratively     
  257.           view the results as the interface is built.  Either during or after   
  258.           this brief development process, the developer may build the           
  259.           application by selecting from a palette the sources and targets to    
  260.           populate or by receiving information from the interface.  The         
  261.           information may come from or be targeted for a database, a            
  262.           communications link, or some external source such as another          
  263.           application program.                                                  
  264.                  The value of visual programming is realized through            
  265.           VisualAge's capability to generate the code required to support the   
  266.           links established between sources and targets and the user interface. 
  267.           Also, visual construction enables people with widely varying skill    
  268.           levels to develop applications.  Those with little or no programming  
  269.           skills can easily create applications using existing components.
