OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 allows the customer to manage
multi-segment token-ring and Ethernet networks either locally from a
workstation or centrally from host NetView or from the LAN Network
Manager for AIX. In addition to selecting the managing operating
environment, the customer also has the option of disabling the
end-user interface for unattended mode if screen viewing security is
important.
With the movement towards distributed computing, LNN for OS/2,
Version 2.0 is a critical component in this distributed token-ring
and Ethernet computing environment. Fault Management, Configuration
Management, and Performance Management offered by LNM for OS/2,
Version 2.0 is an integral part of the Local Area Network (LAN)
itself. When used along with the current version of LAN Station
Manager and the 8230 Model 3, the customer can obtain ring
utilization information. LAN Station Manager, in addition, provides
a rich set of station-identifying information at a local or central
workstation. LAN Station Manager, along with the attachment
information provided by the 8230 Models 1 and 2 (and now Models 3
and 013) CAU, also allows LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 to provide Asset
Management.
USABILITY
The enhanced GUI improves panel navigation to simplify operation and
to make it easier for the customer to obtain the desired management
information. The GUI is more intuitive and is moving in the
direction of CUA (TM) '91 compliance. The GUI presents the user with
network, segment, and device level views. This enhanced GUI has been
modified to provide RouteXpander Multiport Support/2 multiport bridge
support.
This GUI is also switchable to allow the customer to enable or
disable the display if security viewing of the display is important
and to select managing environments such as local management at a
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
workstation or central management at NetView or LAN Network Manager
for AIX NetView. Clear alerts are provided to inform the user at
NetView that a problem condition has been corrected. Several new
alerts have been added to specifically address the requirements of
the NetView MultiSystem Manager.
LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 is packaged as three separate tier
products, offering the option of managing one to two segments for
customers with small networking needs, One to nine segments for
customers with mid-size networking needs, and one to 256 segments for
customers with much larger networking needs. Previous products were
the LAN Network Manager Entry Version 1.0 product that provided
management of a single segment with no end-user interface, LAN
Network Manager Version 1.0 and the LAN Network Manager Version 1.1
product that provided support for up to 256 segments. These last two
products provided an end-user interface.
RELIABILITY/AVAILABILITY/SERVICEABILITY
LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 provides continuous monitoring of the
customer's token-ring and Ethernet networks to assist the customer in
problem determination and error recovery. The user is notified of a
change in status through alerts either at a local workstation or
central workstation at NetView or NetView for AIX (through the LNM
for AIX application). Alerts, along with corrective action messages,
guide the user to quick problem resolution. Failing token-ring
stations or devices can be quickly identified and removed from the
network by LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 in cooperation with the current
version of CAU agents, such as the 8230 Models 1 and 2, and now the
8230 Models 3 and 013, so that these stations or devices do not bring
down the token-ring or Ethernet segment.
LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 exploits FFST (TM)/2 technology
extensively in order to improve product reliability.
INTEROPERABILITY
LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0 interoperates with the LAN Network Manager
for AIX (an SNMP management application at the NetView for AIX)
through a TCP/IP agent interface in LNM for OS/2, Version 2.0. The
agent allows LAN devices that are only manageable via logical link
control (LLC), media access control (MAC), and CMIP over LLC (CMOL)
to be managed at the NetView for AIX. The agent converts LLC, MAC,
and CMIP protocol events to SNMP traps. This allows the customer to
manage both LLC and SNMP-based token-ring segments from a single
workstation. All IBM networking devices supported by LNM for OS/2,
Version 2.0 can be managed across the TCP/IP interface by the LAN
Network Manager for AIX application on NetView for AIX.
In addition, LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 will,
at the customer option, allow the customer to manage token-ring and
Ethernet segments at NetView via the OS/2 Communication Manager/2.
LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 offers new Multiport
bridge support for bridges that connect multiple LANs. These bridges
provide the bridge management agents of configuration report server
(CRS), ring error monitor (REM), ring parameter server (RPS), LAN
reporting mechanism (LRM), and LAN bridge support (LBS).
INSTALLABILITY
LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 conforms to the guidelines
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 4
defined by the configuration, installation, and distribution task
force to allow LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 to be
set-up, distributed, and installed via the customer's distribution
mechanism. This will result in a great deal of flexibility for the
customer with regards to how LAN Network Manager for OS/2,
Version 2.0 is installed, configured, and distributed. In addition
to installing components, the customer can now also de-install
components. LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 installation
is based on the IBM Install/2 product (packaged with LAN Network
Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0).
PERFORMANCE
LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 offers a performance
improvement over LAN Network Manager Version 1.1 relative to the size
of the customer's network and type and capacity of the system unit
used for LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0. This is
extremely critical where distributed management platforms are
involved, giving the customer improved response and productivity.
STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURES
LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 supports several standards
in addition to token-ring and Ethernet standards:
o Full IEEE 802.1B, 802.1f, 802.1k / Heterogeneous LAN Management
(HLM) standards compliance (when communicating with LAN Station
Manager)
o SystemView (R)-compliant
o Direction toward CUA '91 compliance
MEDIA MANAGEMENT
Media management provided by LAN Network Manager for OS/2,
Version 2.0 consists of LLC, MAC, and CMIP management of the token
ring. By navigating through the graphic displays, the user is
presented with network, segment, and device level views, which
provide fault management, configuration management, performance
management, and asset management of the token ring.
FAULT MANAGEMENT
LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 generates generic alerts,
which are generated by LAN attached devices when problem conditions
occur. The user is notified of a device status change. As status
changes occur, the user can navigate through the displays to the
exact location of the problem or potential problem and access the
event log for more detailed information, which includes suggested
actions for problem resolution. In addition to receiving alerts from
token-ring and Ethernet devices, LAN Network Manager for OS/2,
Version 2.0 can get alerts from devices that support the Alert
Transport Architecture.
CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT
The topology views presented by LAN Network Manager for OS/2,
Version 2.0 are drawn and updated dynamically, showing all devices
and their physical and logical relationships. LAN Network Manager
for OS/2, Version 2.0 maintains this configuration information in the
relational DATABASE 2 (TM) OS/2 (DB2/2 (TM)) for easy access. By
providing an open interface, applications can be written to perform
detailed analysis on the event log to isolate network trends and to
determine system availability.
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 5
PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT
LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 collects and displays
performance statistics on token-ring to token-ring bridges and on the
8209 and 8229 Token-Ring to Ethernet bridges. By operating with LAN
Station Manager and the 8230 Model 3, ring utilization for token-ring
segments can be obtained and stored. Ring utilization may also be
displayed and dynamically updated for each segment level view opened.
ASSET MANAGEMENT
Along with LAN station manager (LSM) and CAU agents, such as the 8230
Models 3 and 013, LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0 can
provide asset management. LSM provides to LAN Network Manager for
OS/2, Version 2.0 a rich set of station-identifying information while
the 8230 CAU provides to LAN Network Manager for OS/2, Version 2.0
attachment information. From LAN Network Manager for OS/2,
Version 2.0, the user can also control access to the LAN through the
8230 Models 3 and 013. Support for the 8230 Models 1 and 2 CAUs will
continue to be provided.
