TITLE COLUMBUS: ENCOUNTER, DISCOVERY AND BEYOND VERSION 1.2
ABSTRACT Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond Version 1.2 is an
educational application program designed to provide school and
classroom access to a large multimedia database (content library).
It provides sophisticated functions for displaying and interacting
with media elements in video, text, graphic, and audio form.
Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond provides access to
a large collection of material pertaining to Columbus, his life and
voyages; the World in 1492; art, culture, science, and technology
during the Renaissance period; and the New World. The application is
designed to stimulate critical thinking involving all fields of human
endeavor during the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as focusing on
the cultural impact of these areas on the 20th century. The large
body of multimedia information provides support for approximately 180
hours of classroom and student activity.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond manages today's
information explosion through the use of a comprehensive multimedia
object library. These multimedia databases are content libraries
that contain video, text, graphics, and audio objects that can be
combined for more interesting and informative presentations.
Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond is designed to
foster critical thinking and creativity by allowing students to:
o Become active participants in the learning process
o Look at the information in a variety of forms
o Evaluate information easily
o Decide how best to express information

The program is packaged using CD-ROM and videodisc
technologies. Teachers and students access the database using
nonlinear navigation techniques from a graphical user interface.
Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond has been
demonstrated at school and trade shows. Overall reaction to the
product by teachers, administrators and trade magazines has been very
positive.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
This product is a major application designed to run on a
stand-alone Knowledge Platform specially configured to support the
storage and display of large multimedia databases. It includes
videodisc, digital audio, and CD-ROM capabilities and is expected to
be devoted to presentation of large multimedia applications.
Approximately 180 hours of interactive classroom activity are
supported in Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond. The need for
local storage of media elements precludes this application from being
run in a network environment. In summary, this class of educational
application is designed for stand-alone operation on teacher
workstations, which provide a platform for additional applications in
this learning environment. Other current applications include
Illuminated Books and Manuscripts (TM), IBM Evolution/Revolution, and
IBM Bill of Rights.
Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond is designed to
stimulate critical thinking in the classroom by allowing
individualized exploration of the database.
