  13. ABSTRACT         Columbus:  Encounter, Discovery and Beyond Version 1.2 is an  
  14.           educational application program designed to provide school and       
  15.           classroom access to a large multimedia database (content library).   
  16.           It provides sophisticated functions for displaying and interacting   
  17.           with media elements in video, text, graphic, and audio form.         
  18.                  Columbus:  Encounter, Discovery and Beyond provides access to 
  19.           a large collection of material pertaining to Columbus, his life and  
  20.           voyages; the World in 1492; art, culture, science, and technology    
  21.           during the Renaissance period; and the New World.  The application is
  22.           designed to stimulate critical thinking involving all fields of human
  23.           endeavor during the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as focusing on  
  24.           the cultural impact of these areas on the 20th century.  The large   
  25.           body of multimedia information provides support for approximately 180
  26.           hours of classroom and student activity.

  48.                  Columbus:  Encounter, Discovery and Beyond manages today's    
  49.           information explosion through the use of a comprehensive multimedia  
  50.           object library.  These multimedia databases are content libraries    
  51.           that contain video, text, graphics, and audio objects that can be    
  52.           combined for more interesting and informative presentations.

  54.           foster critical thinking and creativity by allowing students to:

  65.                  The program is packaged using CD-ROM and videodisc            
  66.           technologies.  Teachers and students access the database using       
  67.           nonlinear navigation techniques from a graphical user interface.     
  68.                  Columbus:  Encounter, Discovery and Beyond has been           
  69.           demonstrated at school and trade shows.  Overall reaction to the     
  70.           product by teachers, administrators and trade magazines has been very
  71.           positive.                                                            
  72.           PRODUCT POSITIONING                                                  
  73.                  This product is a major application designed to run on a      
  74.           stand-alone Knowledge Platform specially configured to support the   
  75.           storage and display of large multimedia databases.  It includes      
  76.           videodisc, digital audio, and CD-ROM capabilities and is expected to 
  77.           be devoted to presentation of large multimedia applications.         
  78.           Approximately 180 hours of interactive classroom activity are        
  79.           supported in Columbus: Encounter, Discovery and Beyond.  The need for
  80.           local storage of media elements precludes this application from being
  81.           run in a network environment.  In summary, this class of educational 
  82.           application is designed for stand-alone operation on teacher         
  83.           workstations, which provide a platform for additional applications in
  84.           this learning environment.  Other current applications include       
  85.           Illuminated Books and Manuscripts (TM), IBM Evolution/Revolution, and
  86.           IBM Bill of Rights.

  135.           Memory (RAM), which is the minimum RAM required.  However,

  139.           screen projection can also be used with the system to enhance its

  149.           PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  Although it is possible to run Columbus:
  150.           Encounter, Discovery and Beyond on less powerful systems, it is      
  151.           highly recommended that the system unit should be at least a 386-type
  152.           processor running at 20MHz or better, and have at least 8MB of memory
  153.           and at least 160MB of fixed disk storage capacity installed.
