TITLE ANYNET/2 SOCKETS OVER SNA GATEWAY VERSION 1.1
ABSTRACT The AnyNet (TM)/2 Sockets over SNA Gateway Version 1.1
delivers a set of three gateway sizes. The low-priced entry size
meets the needs of small, remote offices by providing 20 concurrent
connections. The 100- and 250-connection gateways support the
requirements of medium and large networks.
You can change the size of AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway by simply
using a password; you don't have to reinstall or reconfigure
anything. These options are separately priced to provide the most
cost-effective gateway solution to your multiple protocol networks.
The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway, in conjunction with AnyNet/2 and
AnyNet/MVS software, connects SNA and TCP/IP networks to allow
sockets applications data to flow freely across both environments.
Your workstation and hosts in SNA networks can now run sockets
applications and appear to be directly connected to your TCP/IP
network. In addition, dual AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateways can be used to
connect TCP/IP networks across a SNA network. All of the connections
are made with no changes to your sockets applications, TCP/IP
network, or SNA network.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
The AnyNet/2 Sockets over SNA Gateway Version 1.1 provides you
with three combinations. When you initially order your gateway, you
select a capacity level of 20, 100, or 250 concurrent connections. A
password is provided to unlock that capacity. As your network grows,
select the AnyNet/2 Sockets Size Upgrade Kit that meets your
connectivity needs. The kit contains a password that increases the
capacity of your existing Version 1.1 gateway. You only need to
rerun the configuration menu where prompts will guide you to enter
the new password. There is no need for reinstallation or
reconfiguration of your existing gateway.
The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway Version 1.1 supports two socket
connection types:
o Stream sockets connection
o Datagram sockets connection
Within the gateway, connections are represented by gateway entries.
Gateway entries for stream sockets are created when the sockets are
connected. These entries are deleted when both applications close
their side of the connection. Gateway entries for datagram sockets
are created as needed, and are deleted after being unused (idle) for
a period of time (approximately 15 to 120 seconds depending on system
loading). The following are typical connection requirements for
sockets applications:
SOCKETS
APPLICATION STREAMS DATAGRAMS
FTP 2 0
NFS 0 1
X-Windows 0 1
Telnet 1 0
SNMP 0 1
The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway Version 1.1 continues to provide
all of the function in the Version 1.0 Gateway. The sockets gateway
provides connectivity between SNA and TCP/IP environments allowing
sockets application data to flow across SNA networks.
o With AnyNet/2 workstation and AnyNet/MVS host software, networks
can run sockets applications in SNA-attached workstations and
VTAM (R) hosts and communicate seamlessly into native TCP/IP
environments:
.------------. .-----------.

| | | | | |
'------------' '----------' '-----------'
o Multiple AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateways can seamlessly connect TCP/IP
networks across a SNA network:
.-------. .-------. .-------.

The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway provides all of these functions
with no change to the TCP/IP applications.
SOLUTION SIZING AND GROWTH
AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway Version 1.1 provides multiple sizes to allow
the most cost-effective solutions tailored to your network design.
You can increase the capacity with no reinstallation or
reconfiguration.
APPLICATION PORTABILITY THROUGH STANDARDS SUPPORT
The AnyNet product family is implemented using the Multiprotocol
Transport Networking (MPTN) architecture. MPTN is a component of the
Common Transport Semantics layer of the Networking Blueprint.
To make the MPTN architecture available to all vendors and
broadly accepted, it was submitted to X/OPEN. The first X/OPEN MPTN
document, X/OPEN GUIDE: MULTIPROTOCOL TRANSPORT NETWORKING
ARCHITECTURE, was published in January 1994. In addition, Dr. Petr
Janeck, Common Applications Environment (CAE) Development Manager,
X/OPEN Company Limited, announced, "X/OPEN has started work on two
MPTN specifications, the Access Node and the Address Mapper. They
will be developed into X/OPEN Preliminary Specifications, which we
expect to be approved for publication by the end of this year."
The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway Version 1.1 enhances application
portability by providing connectivity between SNA and TCP/IP networks
totally transparent to your sockets applications.
APPLICATIONS ENABLEMENT
Significant business solutions are provided by enabling easy access
to new applications for end users in SNA networks. For example,
users at workstations in a SNA network can run sockets applications
such as FTP, Telnet, and NFS. These applications can communicate
through the AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway to applications and data on
existing TCP/IP networks.
IMPROVED PROGRAMMER PRODUCTIVITY
Programmers can now write applications to their preferred interface
and the applications can run over different network protocols. No
application rewrite is required for a new network environment. This
means less to learn, less to change, and less to maintain in wide
area SNA and TCP/IP networks.
REDUCED NETWORK COMPLEXITY
Since the AnyNet product family can help customers reduce the number
of physical and logical networks required, the resultant network is
simpler and less costly to maintain. AnyNet is also CID-
(Configuration, Installation, and Distribution) and National Language
Support SBCS- (single-byte character set) enabled for simplified
product management and worldwide support.
ANYNET FAMILY OF PRODUCTS AWARDS
IBM's AnyNet products have won two awards in recent months.
DATA COMMUNICATIONS magazine chose AnyNet/2 as a "Hot Product"
in the January 1994 issue. Each year, DATA COMMUNICATIONS selects 30
to 40 "Hot Products", which are technically innovative and address
specific needs in complex networks.
NETWORK WORLD magazine chose AnyNet for the 1993 Enterprise
Technology Award for Middleware. NETWORK WORLD'S award recognized
IBM as a supplier whose products work best in a multiprotocol,
multivendor environment.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway Version 1.1 provides solutions to
connect small, medium, and large TCP/IP networks to sockets
applications in SNA networks and to connect TCP/IP networks across a
SNA network.
The AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway now provides a low-priced entry
size to meet the needs of small remote offices by providing 20
concurrent connections. The 100- and 250-connection gateways support
the requirements of medium and large networks.
The AnyNet family of products is shown below:

capacity (100 connections) as the Version 1.0 gateway. Customers can
then order the desired AnyNet/2 Sockets Gateway Size Upgrade Kit to
increase the gateway capacity. These upgrades will be available
June 24, 1994. Orders will be accepted June 24, 1994. These
upgrades will not be available through IBM Authorized Personal
Computer Dealers and Industry Remarketers -- Personal Computers
certified to market IBM Authorized Advanced Products. Upgrades from
Version 1.0 to Version 1.1 can be obtained by mailing the original
Proof of Licenses (or invoice if purchased on the ICA) along with a
complete return address to:
IBM Corporation
P. O. Box 3558
Shiremanstown, PA 17011
Customers can also order upgrades through the local IBM office
using the IBM Personal Computer/System Program IBM US Upgrade and
