TITLE IBM NETWORK DESIGN AND ANALYSIS/2 VERSION 1.2
ABSTRACT NETDA/2 Version 1.2 is an OS/2 (R)-based network topology and
routing design tool. This tool provides customers with design,
analysis, and optimization support for Systems Network Architecture
(SNA) subarea, SNA Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN (R)), and
3745 NCP Version 6 and NCP Version 7 frame relay networks.
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 provides a flexible user interface to the
network designer for defining sets of subarea routes and implementing
these routes using local design conventions and customer network
management practices. Users of NETDA Version 2.2 for MVS can now
migrate to NETDA/2 Version 1.2 and have similar, yet extended
capabilities. NETDA/2 Version 1.2 provides a new route control view
giving the user full control for generating the required subarea
routes and assigning these routes with the desired Explicit Route
(ER) numbers, Virtual Route (VR) numbers, attributes for route
optimization, and to the appropriate Class of Service (COS) table.
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 enables the user to exclude selected nodes/TGs
from sets of routes, using an exclusion list, and restrict routes
from crossing specified nodes via a restricted subnetwork list. The
GUI has also been enhanced to enable the NETDA/2 Version 1.2 user to
incrementally add nodes, TGs, and routes to an existing network and
to specify all required parameters for these nodes, TGs, and routes
from user-friendly dialogs. The enhanced GUI of NETDA/2 Version 1.2
also supports, from a network graph, COS table manipulation and
manual route generation and modification which simplifies the tasks
associated with network growth and path statement generation.
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 continues to satisfy customer requirements
for IBM product synergy by providing a new two-way interface to IBM's
NTA product. NETDA/2 Version 1.2 now supports exporting topology
data to NTA for user-specified routes. This information from NETDA/2
Version 1.2 is then used by NTA to determine appropriate VR operating
characteristics and parameter settings. Additionally, NETDA/2
Version 1.2 supports importing VR window sizes and parameter settings
from NTA. Users can then incorporate this information into NETDA/2
Version 1.2 generated path statements. NETDA/2 Version 1.2 improves
the existing interface to IBM's NPM product by aligning NETDA/2's
traffic definition conventions with those in common use by customers.
Additional usability enhancements of NETDA/2 Version 1.2 include the
ability to generate subarea path statements for routes based on
user-specified attributes and to quickly select specific nodes/TGs
from a graphical display of the network for failure analysis and
query report creation. NETDA/2 Version 1.2 also provides new route
reports for node pairs based on user-specified parameters.
Comparison route reports are also available, enabling the user to
make detailed comparisons of current routes with newly modified
routes or with routes from another network design.
The NETDA/2 Migration Offering has been updated. This gives
four additional months free of charge (beyond the two month test
period) to eligible customers who acquire a license for NETDA/2 on a
monthly license charge basis. This update allows customers to
migrate to NETDA/2 Version 1 in a more timely manner. See Marketing

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
NETWORK ROUTE CONTROL
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 has provided entirely new network route control
dialogs which are functionally equivalent to the route manipulation
and generation capability of the host-based NETDA Version 2.2
product. This release of NETDA/2 provides the customer network
support personnel full control in manipulating and generating subarea
routes and assignment of ER numbers, VR numbers, and COS tables.
This new flexible user interface allows the user to exclude
undesirable nodes and TGs from specified routes, as well as defining
and generating routes which exclude specific nodes in selected
restricted subnetworks. In addition, NETDA/2 Version 1.2 provides a
route windowing function. This enables the user to select a subset
from previously generated routes to satisfy a user-defined condition
and, together with VR numbering assignment, can restrict a certain
kind of traffic to a certain type of route. Along with the new
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 function of route ordering which enables the user
to sort the routes in a window according to a user-specified rule or
criterion, networking support departments can now define, generate,
and implement routes using local design conventions and network
management practices.
NETWORK SUPPORT PRODUCTIVITY
Using NETDA/2 Version 1.2's flexible user interface, a significant
time savings can be achieved when defining, generating, and,
ultimately, implementing user-specified subarea routes. Tasks
involved in defining and generating a specific set of routes have
been simplified due to usability features incorporated into the new
route control dialogs. In addition, this method of generating
user-specified routes is traffic independent; this independence eases
the user input requirements and simplifies the route generation
process.
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE (GUI)
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 has responded to customer requirements to provide
a user-friendly GUI for ease in network design. With NETDA/2
Version 1.2, users can use a GUI to graphically add nodes and TGs to
the network input and specify all required parameters through
supplied dialogs. In addition, from a special dialog with
point-and-click capability or with the enhanced GUI, NETDA/2
Version 1.2 now supports COS table manipulation and route
modification and generation to a network design from a network graph.
NETWORK SUPPORT PRODUCTIVITY
The NETDA/2 Version 1.2 GUI simplifies the process of dynamically
adding nodes and TGs to a network input and adding routes to the
network design. The NETDA/2 Version 1.2 user can easily modify the
network configuration and generate the associated routes.
NTA AND NPM INTERFACE
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 provides a two-way interface to IBM's NTA tool.
The intent of the interface is to provide the user the capability of
supplying NTA with network topology information for selected routes.
This information can be utilized to determine accurate VR window
sizes and parameter settings, and then be exported back to NETDA/2
Version 1.2 for path statement generation. It should be noted that a
route window in NETDA/2 Version 1.2 consists of a set of physical
routes, and that a single physical route with multiple VR numbers can
only be assigned one set of window sizes, one for each priority.
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 also improves the existing interface to
NPM by aligning its traffic definition conventions with those in
common use by customers. For example, the notation of IN/OUT will be
switched, such that IN will denote into the application node;
messages from the destination node to the application (source) node.
IMPROVED SYSTEM PERFORMANCE: By allowing NETDA/2 Version 1.2 to
export network topology information to NTA for selected routes,
difficulty in using NTA has been reduced. With NTA's ability to
produce accurate VR window sizes for specific routes received from
NETDA/2, and then to enable these values to be imported to NETDA/2
Version 1.2, network path statements can be generated by NETDA/2
Version 1.2 that produce a network with optimum performance.
With the enhancement to the NPM converter utility, NETDA/2
Version 1.2 users will find extracting the appropriate traffic
information from NPM for inclusion into the network design phases, a
more user-friendly process. Changing orientation of the IN/OUT
notation within the NPM converter utility will more closely match the
orientation used by our customers, thus making NETDA/2 Version 1.2
simpler to use.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 is an OS/2-based network topology design tool
developed by IBM to provide customers with design, analysis, and
optimization support for SNA subarea, SNA APPN, and 3745 NCP
Version 6 and NCP Version 7 frame relay networks. This release of
NETDA/2 provides the network design and support departments with
route control functions similar to those found in the NETDA
Version 2.2 product. With support of route windowing and ordering,
the ability to exclude certain nodes and TGs from routes through the
use of exclusion lists and the ability to select restricted
subnetworks, NETDA Version 2.2 users can now migrate to NETDA/2
Version 1.2 and have similar, yet extended capabilities. The
enhanced GUI developed for NETDA/2 Version 1.2 enables the user to
incrementally add nodes, TGs, and required routes to an existing
network and to specify all required parameters for these network
components from user-friendly dialogs. As a result, defining network
growth to NETDA/2 and generating the associated path statements is
accomplished in a more user-friendly method. In addition,
incorporating existing customer networks into NETDA/2 Version 1.2 and
generating the path statements can be done independent of traffic
considerations and therefore, save a considerable amount of time.
As customers begin to use the network topology design
capabilities of NETDA/2 Version 1.2 to assist in fine-tuning their
networks' performance, and to migrate to APPN or frame relay
networks, the enhanced interface to NPM and the new two-way interface
to NTA are of significant value. This product synergy is in response
to customer requirements and will result in a network that is
well-balanced among performance, availability and cost.
NETDA/2 Version 1.2 provides a functionally equivalent product
with NETDA Version 2.2 for MVS plus the ability to perform true
network topology design. Customers should examine the usability
enhancements and capabilities of NETDA/2 Version 1.2 to ensure this
product will meet their current and future network design tool needs.
