TITLE ULTIMEDIA MANAGER PROFESSIONAL EDITION FOR OS/2 AND DB2/2 1.1
ABSTRACT Enhance your image-searching capabilities and sort through
thousands of images more easily with Ultimedia (R) Manager 1.1.
Breakthrough image-classification technology makes it possible to
focus your attention on image content in addition to textual
descriptions. Now you can search for images by specifying content
attributes such as color, texture, shape, and layout.
Ultimedia Manager 1.1 complements traditional text and
parametric searches, and query-by-image content opens new dimensions
in visual queries.
You can build your own collection of predefined colors,
shapes, and textures and use them in any combination to create a
virtually unlimited number of different visual queries. Query-result
images can be browsed, viewed in full resolution, used for another
application, or read for their associated text comments.
Ultimedia Manager 1.1 understands these image format types:
o Audio Visual Connection (R) (AVC) images
o OS/2 (R) bitmap
o Windows (1) 3.x bitmap
o PCX
o Intel** and Motorola** TIFF
o TARGA
The image classifier and analyzer enable users to
automatically index whole images, specify the area of interest within
the image as focused visual indexes, enter category or keywords to
narrow the search, and build samplers for colors, shapes, and
textures.
Catalogs of images that have been classified by Ultimedia
Manager can be used by the Ultimedia Query product, part of the
Visualizer Family (refer to Software Announcement 294-328).
To simplify ordering, Ultimedia Manager 1.1 is available in
packages including the single user version of IBM Database 2 OS/2
Version 1.2 (DB2/2 (TM) 1.2) Refer to Software Announcement 294-317,
for further information on DB2/2 1.2.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
Ultimedia Manager 1.1 is a unique and exciting multimedia
software tool that allows users to do more than store and browse
image files; now they can search by using image content.
Ultimedia Manager 1.1 expands the boundaries of the multimedia
marketplace through its advanced visual content-query capabilities.
Just as the breakthrough of query by example simplified text-based
queries, query by image content establishes a new dimension in visual
query by including color, texture, shape, and layout in an image
database. Queries are created by visually constructing the query
from predefined samples of colors, textures, and shapes, or by
choosing the colors from the color wheel. Searches are performed
against numerically precomputed image attributes that enable
similarity searches and offer advanced browsing and relevance
feedback capability. For example, you can search for all images with
a rectangular shape in the center.
Users can automatically index images for color and texture and
also focus the search on manually outlined image areas to enable
search for color, texture, shape, and layout (position). Text
comments as well as keywords denoting image category are entered
manually.
Visual queries are easily and naturally constructed through
drag and drop from the color, shape, texture, and category selection
containers or color wheel selectors. The Query Result window shows
which images most closely match the example image.
USER PRODUCTIVITY AND BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
Using new query techniques based on visual patterns, users can now
more effectively and efficiently retrieve multimedia objects for
analysis and inclusion in business communications and multimedia
presentations. Applications of multimedia information systems
perform well in business areas such as decision support, education
and training, marketing, retailing, cataloging, fashion, art, stock
photos, and entertainment.
The marketing objective for the Ultimedia Manager product set
is to lead the marketplace in incorporating this technology, shape
the direction of a multimedia SQL framework, and drive the demand for
standards.
The market segments identified as the focus of the Manager
product set are:
o Business Desktop Professional
o Technical user
o Imaging (Creative) professionals
o Content providers
o Database ISVs
o Image Browser ISVs
BUSINESS DESKTOP PROFESSIONAL
This segment is characterized by business professionals who run
spreadsheets, word processing, database, telecommunications, and
business graphics software. Multimedia software applications include
presentations, animation, business applications, multimedia
authoring, clip media, and sound editing.
Typical professions include marketing, sales, administration,
middle management, public relations, consultants, educators, and
service-oriented businesses such as real estate and travel agencies.
TECHNICAL USER
This segment is characterized by specialists with deep, narrow areas
of expertise in predominantly technical disciplines. They are
frequently involved in the collection and identification of relevant
image attributes, such as science disciplines that examine a
particular image library for shape differences.
Typical professions include scientists, researchers,
engineers, programmers, medical specialties, government, and
military.
IMAGING (CREATIVE) PROFESSIONAL
This segment is characterized by individuals who spend most of their
time working with images and are already aware of problems associated
with archival, storage, and retrieval of images. They are computer
power users who know what works and what doesn't and are extremely
aware of relevant technology in the marketplace.
Typical jobs in this segment include graphic designers,
imaging specialists, image archivists, illustrators, graphic
designers, art directors, animators, image librarians, photo-editors,
journalists, and service bureaus. They require a graphical user
interface (GUI) that conforms to conventions of other related
products.
CONTENT PROVIDERS
This segment of users is focused on selling more images, and their
organizations require the ability to provide users with rapid,
precise access to images, management of large image libraries, and
tools, which display diversity and applicability of images.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Ultimedia Manager does not contain data or programs that need to be
secured from the user, and there are no products that Ultimedia
Manager 1.1 depends on for security.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
Ultimedia Manager 1.1 is an Ultimedia Tool Series product that
customers can use to manage their image databases most efficiently.
This tool provides an easy-to-use interface for the entry level user,
including sophisticated, content-search capabilities that allow
search by color, texture, shape, layout, and category. It combines
query, browsing, and relevance feedback by using unique technology
developed in collaboration with IBM Almaden Research Center. Its
primary use is to help the user find images in applications where
text is not adequate, such as in describing colors, textures, shapes
and layouts. These applications are usually in areas where image
content parameters represent the dominant indexing method, such as in
cataloging, desktop publishing, stock photo, retail, art, fashion
design, multimedia creation. This product complements rather than
replaces traditional text and parametric search. Ultimedia
Manager 1.1 performs in image search what text search performs in
text documents; it matches desired patterns rather than semantic
parameters.
Once desired images are located, they can be viewed in full
resolution, used in some other application, or the associated textual
comments can be read.
In addition to the normal marketing channels, IBM Personal
System Product Distributors and the Ultimedia Tools Series direct
channel are included.
From the multimedia support built directly into OS/2 2.1 to
the new multimedia PS/2s, IBM continues its commitment to provide
superior multimedia software with its Ultimedia brand of products.
One of the first IBM multimedia offerings was the award-winning Audio
Visual Connection (AVC). The AVC is a comprehensive
multimedia-authoring product that offers image, audio, graphics,
text, analog (M-motion) and digital (DVI) full-motion video in one
package.
With the announcement of Ultimedia Manager 1.1, you can choose
functionally granular image database management solutions. Rather
than acquiring one "do-everything" package, you can select the tools
best suited for the required tasks and seamlessly operate these tools
to manage image databases. In addition, you can complement the tools
in the suite with the multimedia tools included in the Ultimedia Tool
Series.
Ultimedia Manager 1.1 incorporates an intuitive graphic
interface so that time spent using the tool is minimized. Media
objects can easily be interchanged between Ultimedia Manager 1.1 and
tools included in the Ultimedia Tools Series.
