TITLE IBM IMS CLIENT SERVER/2 VERSION 2 RELEASE 2
ABSTRACT IMS Client Server/2 (TM) Version 2 Release 2 is the latest
addition to the Information Management System (IMS) family of
products. IMS Client Server/2 is a cooperative processing
programming interface that OS/2 (R) application programs can call to
execute IMS/VS Data Communications or IMS/ESA (R) Transaction Manager
transactions at the host.
This new release of IMS Client Server/2 supports VisualAge
(TM) -- IBM's new, object-oriented, visual application development
environment. With VisualAge, application programmers can quickly
build graphical client/server applications by assembling and
connecting prefabricated parts with visual programming tools. IMS
Client Server/2 provides a set of prefabricated parts and Smalltalk
classes for enabling VisualAge applications to communicate with IMS
host applications. With these parts and classes, you can build
sophisticated mission-critical applications with minimal coding.
You can also access host IMS applications from an OS/2 PL/I
application. In addition, IMS Client Server/2 Version 2 Release 2
provides a connection to the Micro Focus IMS Option. This allows you
to develop and run host applications on a workstation using IMS
Client Server/2 as the interface to graphical end-user applications.
With IMS Client Server/2, you can:
o Protect and build on investments in existing IMS 3270
applications
o Bridge host data into the OS/2 workstation environment
o Provide application programmers with easy-to-use application
program interfaces (APIs) to help them create client/server
solutions for their business needs
o Combine text-based host data with graphical, audio and video data

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
VISUALAGE SUPPORT
In addition to communicating with IMS host applications, VisualAge
also offers optional features, such as:
o Team programming support
o Multimedia parts support
o External logic written in COBOL
o Communications support
The communications support includes prefabricated parts and
Smalltalk classes for client/server communications using APPC,
NetBIOS, TCP/IP, EHLLAPI, CICS OS/2 (TM), External Call Interface
support, and now IMS through IMS Client Server/2 Version 2 Release 2.
MICRO FOCUS IMS OPTION
The Micro Focus IMS Option allows programmers to develop and test IMS
host applications on a workstation, independently of the mainframe.
This gives them a dedicated IMS environment that generates Data Base
Descriptions (DBDs), Program Specification Blocks (PSBs), Application
Control Blocks (ACBs), and Message Format Service (MFS) blocks, which
significantly increases productivity.
You can also develop and test end-user applications,
independently of the mainframe. With an exit routine supplied by IMS
Client Server/2, end-user applications can now access a host IMS
application running in either the IMS Option environment or on the
mainframe. If the host application is using the Micro Focus Remote
IMS product, you can leave the data on the mainframe, while running
the IMS host application on the workstation.
APPLICATION PROGRAMMER PRODUCTIVITY
IMS Client Server/2 is intended to enhance the productivity of the
application programmer in building OS/2 applications that require
communications with an IMS Data Communications (DC) or Transaction
Manager (TM) host.
IMS Client Server/2 can be used with most OS/2-supported
languages, allowing an installation to develop workstation
applications using the language skills most prevalent in the
installation.
The IMS Client Server/2 support of VisualAge offers
productivity advantages to installations:
o Supports multiple operating system platforms, allowing
installations to apply investment in developer education and
training across the enterprise
o Provides a communication subsystem that supports different
communications protocols using similar methods, allowing
installations to leverage developer education and training
o Offers proven object-oriented development advantages:
- Increased code reuse through inheritance and encapsulation
- Iterative development
- Rapid prototyping
o Offers significant reuse through a large library of prefabricated
parts
o Provides state-of-the-art visual programming technology
The IMS Client Server/2 support of the Micro Focus IMS Option
offers rapid turnaround during the development of IMS CS/2 (TM)
applications. The host application executes locally in the same
environment as the IMS CS/2 application, and iterative changes to
either program can be made quickly and are easily coordinated.
ENABLING NEW APPLICATIONS
With advances in workstation technology, business solutions that
require interactions with novice users are becoming more feasible.
The flexibility and functionality of the workstation, in conjunction
with low-cost processing power, allow installations to build
applications for skilled or novice users to achieve their business
goals.
However, most of the data necessary to implement these
applications is often managed by the central data processing system.
An attractive solution for this requirement is client/server
processing. The client/server approach performs the various facets
of an application in the location where it is most cost effective:
corporate data on the host, end-user interface and local data capture
on the workstation.
IMS Client Server/2 enhances the capability to develop these
business solutions in environments that use IMS DC or TM as the host
transaction manager.
INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
IMS Client Server/2 provides the capability to integrate IMS DC or TM
data with workstation application data and tools. Workstation
applications that call IMS Client Server/2 can include a wide variety
of workstation application tools and data management facilities that
are not available to host applications.
ASSET PROTECTION
IMS Client Server/2 is used on a workstation to access existing,
unmodified IMS DC or TM applications (stored procedures) that support
327x terminals. IMS DC or TM applications can be accessed from both
the workstation and the 327x. Only a simple MFS source format change
at the IMS DC or TM host is needed. This MFS source format change is
performed by the IMS Client Server/2 MFS Conditioning Utility. This
allows IMS DC or TM installations to gradually introduce programmable
workstations into existing 327x networks, while preserving investment
in applications, terminals, and programmer skills.
Because the same IMS DC or TM application is used by 327x
terminals and workstation applications, IMS Client Server/2 helps
migrate IMS DC or TM applications into the client/server workstation
environment without disrupting existing production applications.
Significant assets in existing IMS DC or TM applications are
protected, because IMS Client Server/2 does not require changes to
the logic in host IMS DC or TM applications.
Workstation applications call the IMS Client Server/2
application programming interface to connect with existing IMS DC or
TM applications. The workstation can then take advantage of the
workstation functions that support graphics, audio, video, and other
tools not available to the host application.
APPLICATION DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY
IMS Client Server/2 does not require changes to existing host IMS DC
or TM application. The IMS Client Server/2 MFS Conditioning Utility
updates MFS formats and generates templates to be installed in the
IMS format library. These updates include a version ID to support
synchronization of host MFS formats with workstation screen formats.
IS OPERATIONS PRODUCTIVITY
IMS Client Server/2 provides a set of interactive dialogs to allow
simple installation of the IMS Client Server/2 product, and
definition of the IMS DC or TM hosts with which it communicates. The
IMS Client Server/2 Administrative and Development Services feature
helps create the customized run-time licenses that are distributed to
production users.
ACCESS TO ENTERPRISE DATA
IMS Client Server/2 provides a level of host data access that allows
customer growth in workstation-based services, without incurring an
impact to the existing IMS DC or TM application programs (stored
procedures).
CONNECTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS
IMS Client Server/2 allows new OS/2 client applications to access the
IMS DC or TM server environment and provides IMS DC or TM transaction
data to the OS/2 platform for growth in cooperative processing. Data
previously manipulated only in IMS DC or TM applications can now be
worked on by workstation applications, while continuing to be stored
and retrieved under the control of IMS DC or TM.
In combination with the IMS Client Server/2 product, OS/2 PL/I
application builders now have the ability to access host IMS
transactions. The OS/2 PL/I application can use the IMS Client
Server/2 functions to help the OS/2 application deal with MFS
formats, paging, IMS commands, and unsolicited IMS output.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
IMS Client Server/2 is the OS/2 product that promotes the development
of client/server transaction processing applications with IMS DC or
TM hosts. This capability enables business solutions that
incorporate the technology of the PC into an IMS DC or TM
environment. IMS Client Server/2 provides cooperative processing
client functions, operating on a workstation network connected to a
host IMS DC or TM server with its associated database. The database
may be either an IMS database or DB2 (R) database.

Client Server/2 can run in a simple system such as a workstation,
without disk storage, running OS/2
o 2MB of hard disk space for a full product installation (Runtime
Base and the Administrative and Development Services features); a
Runtime Base installation needs only 625KB of space, plus
approximately 2KB for each IMS device format used by the IMS
Client Server/2 application
o An additional 2MB of hard disk space is needed, if you choose to
use the new VisualAge support
o Approximately 250KB of random access memory for the Runtime

COMPATIBILITY: IMS Client Server/2 Version 2 Release 2 is upwardly
compatible with IMS Client Server/2 Version 1 and IMS Client Server/2
Version 2 Release 1.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: Since IMS Client Server/2 functions
execute outside the IMS DC or TM subsystem (as a PC application) and
access IMS TM through standard interfaces, the impact on the IMS
product is limited to the transaction load generated by the message,
which is similar to access of IMS DC or TM from other devices.
Performance savings on the host can be realized through the
elimination of device field literals, which are not needed by the PC
application. The applications that use the PC to manage static
information on the PC, rather than on the host, can improve host CPU
and network throughput (for example, allowing the PC to manage the
display of help screens).
IMS Client Server/2 is designed to minimize the impact on
OS/2 system performance and resource usage, allowing the PC
application to freely use any and all PC features and functions.
