ABSTRACT The IBM Advanced Server for Workgroups product offers a
low-cost introduction into workgroup computing for departments or
workgroups in a local area network (LAN) environment. The product
supports a server node and six client workstations running either
OS/2 (R) 2.0, or later, or DOS/Windows (1) 3.0, or later. The
product contains the following software components:
o IBM OS/2 2.11 -- The industry's leading 32-bit, multi-tasking
operating system
o IBM OS/2 LAN Server 3.0-Advanced -- A comprehensive server that
provides industrial strength LAN capabilities
o Lotus** Notes 3.0 -- The number one groupware application that
allows users to collect, organize, and share information over
LANs and dial-up lines
o IBM System Performance Monitor/2 2.0 -- Provides an integrated
set of performance data collecting, reporting, and analyzing
functions that enable performance management
An easy-to-use installation guide gives administrators and end
users a step-by-step approach for installing and running the
components together on the LAN. You can either install a
pre-configured default installation or customize the installation
options.
The Advanced Server for Workgroups offers exceptional
price-performance by combining the industry's leading
information-sharing technologies and products in personal computer
operating systems and LAN resource sharing, management, and control.

TECHINFO TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
OS/2 2.11: The minimum hardware configuration for OS/2 2.11 is as
follows:

support the appropriately configured hardware platforms supported by
OS/2 2.0 and later. In addition to supporting appropriately
configured IBM hardware and IBM operating system platforms, the Entry
and Advanced products also support selected non-IBM equivalent
hardware that have passed OS/2 2.0 and later compatibility test. The
approved platforms are listed in numerous forums and publications.
An IBM PC-compatible 486 is recommended if the IBM LAN Server is
installed on the same machine as the Lotus Notes Server.
OS/2 REQUESTER: The IBM OS/2 Requester supports the appropriately
configured hardware platforms supported by OS/2 2.0 and later. IBM
OS/2 Requester supports selected non-IBM equivalent hardware
operating systems that have passed the OS/2 compatibility test. The
approved platforms are listed in numerous forums and publications.
DOS LAN REQUESTER: The DOS LAN Requester supports the appropriately
configured hardware required to support the DOS 3.3, 5.0, and 6.0
operating systems or IBM-approved non-IBM equivalents.

October 13, 1992.
IBM System Performance Monitor/2 Version 2.0.1 will run on the
IBM PS/2, IBM Industrial Computer, and non-IBM personal computer
hardware configurations supported by IBM OS/2 2.0 and later. The
amount of system memory and fixed disk required for SPM/2 varies per
environment. These requirements do not include the memory or fixed
disk requirements of the OS/2 operating system or other applications
that may be running in the user's environment.
SYSTEM MEMORY AND FIXED DISK: The minimum system memory and fixed
disk storage required to support SPM/2 execution on a stand-alone,
managing or managed system is depicted in the following table.
Estimates reflect data collection using default resources (CPU, disk,
and memory).
SYSTEM MEMORY FIXED DISK
ENVIRONMENT (MB) (MB)
Stand-alone 0.75 (8) 2.7

plan to monitor system performance for extended intervals, archive
performance data logs/reports, or implement remote monitoring of
multiple systems will require additional disk space to support
their environment. Users should ensure that they have the
capability to expand their fixed disk capacity, depending on
requirements.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
User Profile Management (UPM) performs the user ID and
password validation function at logon time. UPM also provides
facilities for the management of IDs and groups within the domain.
Network administrators can use a wide range of mechanisms to
control and manage user access to the network. Network
administrators can define:
o Valid logon times
Permitted logon times can be specified in weekly
intervals, such as Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 9 a.m.
and 7 p.m.
o Valid workstations
By default, a user can log on from any workstation on the
network; however, administrators can specify one to eight
workstations a user is restricted to.
o Account expiration date
Individual accounts can be set to expire on specified
dates. This is useful for temporary employees and classroom
environments.
o Forced logoff
When a user's account expires or the limits of a valid
logon time are reached, the system can be set to force the user
to log off immediately, grant the user a specified grace period
before an automatic logoff occurs, or ignore the expiration and
let the user continue working.
The OS/2 LAN Server products use the U.S. Government Data
Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm to encrypt passwords. Network
administrators can also use the following systemwide settings to
control the use of passwords:
o Minimum password length -- specifies the required number of
characters
o Maximum password age -- forces users to change their passwords at
specified intervals
o Minimum password age -- stops users from altering their passwords
until a specified interval has passed
o Unique password history -- ensures that a password chosen by a
user is different from as many as eight of the user's previous
passwords
Once a user is logged on to a domain, the user's access to a
given resource is controlled by the access control profile for that
given resource. Network administrators can specify the following
permissions in an access profile. Combinations of appropriate
permissions can be constructed to give very specific control to a
user:
None = No access to the resource
Execute = Use the resource (an application
program), but do not allow copying
to diskette or hard file
Read = Read only
Write = Write only
Create = Create a file or directory
Delete = Delete a file or directory
Attribute = Change the attributes of a file
Permission = Gives a user the ability to grant
other users access to this resource
By default, all resources are protected. Network
administrators can grant permissions to groups and individual users.
Creating groups of users with similar resource needs makes it easier
to grant access permissions. New users added to an existing group
inherit the permissions previously given to the group.
Administrators can effectively manage the resources in the network by
using a combination of group designations and permissions.
There are several facilities available to secure an OS/2 LAN
Server that may not be locked in a room of its own. The PS/2
hardware provides a power-on password facility that disables the
machines on startup until the correct password is provided. Another
password facility allows operators to lock their keyboards when they
are temporarily away. A Server Mode function is also available that
automatically disables input at startup but allows the machine to
come to full readiness without operator interaction.
The 386 high-performance file system (HPFS) provides file
protection against unauthorized access to any server file. This
protection cannot be evaded by rebooting the server and is functional
even when the LAN Server code is not running. This protection
applies to all files stored on the 386 HPFS file partition. The 386
HPFS is available with the LAN Server 3.0 Advanced product only.
A comprehensive audit trail facility enhances security by
enabling administrators to keep track of selected server resources.
Any network resource, such as a directory, an individual file, a
named pipe, or a printer queue can be designated for auditing.
Resource auditing can provide data on the type of access -- open,
close, read or write; username; accessing workstation; date and time
of occurrence; outcome of access; and descriptive information about
the event. Server auditing can keep track of when the server is
started, stopped, paused, or continued; all logons and logoffs; and
all remote administration connections. Administrators can also audit
changes to the user and group account database and the access control
list.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.
