PRODUCT POSITIONING
RouteXpander/2, operating on an open, standard OS/2 platform, offers
excellent price performance as a multiprotocol, multiport (two or
more ports) source route bridge and/or router.
RouteXpander/2 provides an economical solution for customers
with small, remote branch offices with small Token-Ring LANs and with
multiple protocols that require attachment to a backbone LAN, but may
not need a dedicated bridge or router.
RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1, in addition to source route
bridging support, also provides small offices choosing Ethernet LAN
attachment the ability to bridge two Ethernet LANs. As with the
source route bridging function, RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 shares
the Ethernet adapters with all other applications on the same
platform. This transparent bridging function is not available in
RouteXpander/2 Version 2.
RouteXpander/2 Version 2, with RouteXpander LNM Support/2,
RouteXpander X.25 Support/2, and RouteXpander Multiport Support/2
offers customers the flexibility of ordering any combination of the
supported features to tailor the system to satisfy business
requirements, allowing for growth.
The RouteXpander/2 Version 2 with the LNM Support Program
provides Ring Parameter Server, Configuration Report Server, and Ring
Error Monitor for media management of Token-Ring segments, as well as
LAN Bridge Server to monitor and control the bridging functions.
RouteXpander/2 Version 2 with its X.25 Support Program can
transport multiprotocols across an X.25 network. Like the
RouteXpander/2 frame relay support, RouteXpander/2 Version 2 with the
X.25 Support Program can communicates with multiple destinations
(virtual circuits) on a single physical line.
With the Multiport Support Program, RouteXpander/2 Version 2
can be used as a concentrator for multiple downstream connections of
RouteXpander/2 and Frame Relay Token-Ring Bridge/DOS. (Refer to
Software Announcement 294-125, for further information of Frame Relay
Token-Ring Bridge/DOS.)
X.25 Xpander/2 provides a cost-effective means of building new
packet switched networks, or extending existing networks.
X.25 Xpander/2 switches X.25 traffic on up to 32 lines, at
line speeds from 2400 bps up to T1 (1.544Mbps). Working in tandem
with existing OS/2 products, X.25 Xpander/2 can transport OS/2
supported protocols across public or private X.25 networks. X.25
Xpander/2 provides an API, compatible with applications coded to the
published Communications Manager/2 X.25 API, and suitable for

level UN37938, or later), or IBM TCP/IP for OS/2 2.0.
COMPATIBILITY:
o Except for transparent bridging function, RouteXpander/2
Version 2 supports the functions that RouteXpander/2 supports.
It is compatible and will interoperate with RouteXpander/2 using
either a frame relay or point-to-point connection.
o RouteXpander/2 Version 2 interoperates with the IBM 6611 Network
Processor and IBM Frame Relay Token-Ring Bridge/DOS Version 1.0
using either a frame relay or point-to-point connection.
o Remote RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 and RouteXpander/2 Version 2
bridges interoperate with another copy of RouteXpander/2
Version 2, and Frame Relay Token-Ring Bridge/DOS, or with bridge
support of the 6611 Network Processor, either over a frame relay
network or via a point-to-point connection. RouteXpander/2
Version 1.0.1 and RouteXpander/2 Version 2 can coexist on a
Token-Ring LAN with the IBM Token-Ring Bridge Program or the IBM
8209 LAN Bridge, but a remote connection between RouteXpander/2
Version 1.0.1 and RouteXpander/2 Version 2 and either of these
two programs is not supported.
o RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 interoperates with the IBM 6611
Network processor router and operates with non-IBM devices that
conform to the latest frame relay specifications (RFC 1294).
RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 can also interoperate with the IBM
3172 Interconnect Controller Multiprotocol Extensions.
o RouteXpander/2 Version 2 interoperates with the IBM 6611 Network
processor router and operates with non-IBM devices that conform
to the latest frame relay or X.25 specifications, including RFC
1294, RFC 1356, and RFC 877. RouteXpander/2 Version 2 can also
interoperate with the IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller
Multiprotocol Extensions.
o With RouteXpander/2 Version 2 and its LNM Support Program, the
current version of IBM LAN Network Manager is suitable for 2-port
bridge configurations. However, the then current version of IBM
LAN Network Manager must be used to support multiport bridge
configurations (more than two ports) when the Multiport Support
Program becomes available.
o Applications using the published x.25 application program
interface of the IBM Communications Manager/2 (CM/2) are
compatible with X.25 Xpander. However, CM/2 itself is not
compatible.
o RouteXpander/2 Version 2 users who also requires X.25 support
must use RouteXpander X.25 Support Program. In this
configuration, the RouteXpander/2 Version 2 and its X.25 Support
Program can only interoperate with RouteXpander/2 Version 2 and
X.25 Support Program or any other RFC 1356-compliant products.
LIMITATIONS: The limitations of RouteXpander/2 include:
o Both RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 and RouteXpander/2 Version 2
support a maximum of 200 frame relay logical links (Data Link
Connection Identifier "DLCIs") per each physical frame relay
attachment
o RouteXpander/2 Version 2 with its X.25 Support Program supports a
maximum of 200 virtual circuits/links.
o RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 supports two ports for bridging and
routing. These bridging ports can be configured to be source
route bridging ports or transparent bridging ports. Bridging
from Token-Ring LAN to Ethernet LAN is not supported. However,
traffic can be routed between unlike LANs.
o The dual port that RouteXpander/2 Version 1.0.1 supports can be
one LAN port, either Token-Ring or Ethernet, and one WAN port,
which can be point-to-point or frame relay. RouteXpander/2
Version 1.0.1 can also be configured to have two LAN ports.
o RouteXpander Multiport Support/2 is optimized to support eight
64KB lines. A T1/E1 line speed is supported for performance
critical applications using large frame sizes.
o The RouteXpander/2 Version 2 base product supports two ports for
bridging and routing. Typically this will be one Token-Ring
port, and one wide area network port, whether frame relay, or
point-to-point. With the RouteXpander Multiport Support/2, this
support is increased to the following:
- Two Token-Ring LANs
- Eight point-to-point connections
- One X.25 port (with the X.25 Support Program)
- Two Frame relay
However, for bridging, the total number of LAN and WAN
ports combined can not exceed nine. Additional ports that
support routing only (for example, TCP/IP over Ethernet) are not
included in this bridging port limitation.
o RouteXpander/2 Version 2 uses other OS/2 program products such as
OS/2 Communications Manager and TCP/IP for OS/2 to route
SNA/APPN, and TCP/IP traffic. Due to the limitations of these
co-resident software products, RouteXpander/2 Version 2 can only
route SNA over a maximum of 2 ports, and TCP/IP over a maximum of
four ports. IPX routing does not require other OS/2 software,
and can be routed over two ports with RouteXpander/2 Version 2
base product and over nine ports with Multiport Support Program.
o Only one copy of RouteXpander/2 Version 2 running on an OS/2
workstation is supported.
o LAN Bridge Server function, supported by RouteXpander LNM
Support/2, does not support the path trace function.
o When Simple Network Management Protocol is used as RouteXpander/2
Version 2's management tool, the SNMP MIBS for Ring Error Monitor
(REM), Configuration Report Server (CRS) and Ring Parameter
Server (RPS) are not supported.
For X.25 support, RouteXpander X.25 Support/2 must be used
with RouteXpander/2 Version 2. RouteXpander X.25 Support/2,
operating under RouteXpander/2 Version 2, supports a maximum of
200 virtual circuits.
The limitations of X.25 Xpander/2 include:
o X.25 Xpander/2 supports a maximum of 32 physical links
o X.25 Xpander/2 with its X.25 feature supports a maximum of 4,000
virtual circuits per physical link
o X.25 Xpander/2 application program interface supports a maximum
of 3,000 connections (virtual circuits).
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: System performance depends on a variety
of system unit and communication load factors. These include the
type and speed of the system unit processor and the amount of
processing by the communications products. RouteXpander/2 Version 2
and X.25 Xpander/2 reside in the system unit and can affect the
performance of other applications operating in the workstation.
Their processing requirements should be included in capacity planning
for additional communications, estimated traffic volumes, and the
availability of common carrier services. Additional performance
information will be provided at availability.
