TITLE IBM NETVIEW NETWORK PLANNER/2 AVAILABILITY
ABSTRACT NetView (R) Network Planner/2 is an Operating System/2 (R)
(OS/2 (R)) planning tool for managing enterprise-wide inventory and
assets of networks, systems, and the resources within them. IBM
NetView Network Planner/2 includes:
o Data model support for software, equipment, features, locations,
circuits, organizations, people and financial information using
SQL database technology
o An easy-to-use tool for displaying and changing planning
information
o Graphical support for easily visualizing complex logical and
physical relationships.
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 also provides a facility for
exchanging information with the Resource Object Data Manager (RODM)
of NetView Version 2 to enable more effective network management from
a single point and to supply data to Trouble Ticket/6000 to reduce
duplicate data entry. Samples are provided to prime the IBM NetView
Network Planner/2 database from the databases of products such as IBM
LAN Network Manager and IBM LAN NetView Management Utilities.
Reference: For additional product information on IBM NetView
Network Planner/2, refer to Software Announcement 293-736, dated
December 14, 1993.
On December 31, 1993, IBM shipped NetView Network Planner/2 to
customers to validate its quality objectives; validation activities
with these customers have confirmed readiness of the product.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
NETWORK AND SYSTEM CONFIGURATION RESOURCES
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 provides customers with the facilities
necessary to:
o Define network and system resources
o Store the resources on an administrative database to track
inventory and assets.
The resources can be anything that applies to the system or
network, such as a workstation, circuit or software product. In
addition to inventory attributes, IBM NetView Network Planner/2 can
collect and store connectivity data and viewing attributes for
resources. This data can be shared with users (operations staff)
through the NetView Graphic Monitor Facility. The configuration data
can be viewed graphically, making visualizing relationships easier.
The resources that can be used with NetView include:
o Non-SNA resources defined in the NetView Graphic Monitor Facility
Host Subsystem data model
o SystemView (R) defined resources for Advanced Peer-to-Peer
Networking (TM) (APPN (R))
o SystemView managed resource objects, such as those used by the
IBM MultiSystem Manager MVS/ESA (TM).
ENABLING NEW APPLICATIONS: IBM NetView Network Planner/2 enables new
applications by providing the capability to collect asset,
configuration, inventory, organizational and operational data about
network and system resources in a single structured database.
CENTRALIZED CONTROL: IBM NetView Network Planner/2 provides a
network administrator with the ability to generate an illustration of
a network, so that the elements of the network can be more easily
managed from one central location.

DATA SHARING
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 can accept data from and share data
with other databases using standard SQL import and export functions.
Information on how to map imported information to the database
definition of IBM NetView Network Planner/2 is included in the
product documentation.
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 can generate the file to load
NetView's RODM. The process of manually generating this load file
can be very complex and time consuming. With IBM NetView Network
Planner/2, the file is easily and quickly generated once the
administrative database is defined. In addition, IBM NetView Network
Planner/2 allows users to browse the load file before it is sent to
RODM. With the Network Planner Inventory Exit distributed feature
installed on the NetView Graphic Monitor Facility (NGMF) workstation,
the NGMF command pull-down creates a direct link to the selected
resource in the IBM NetView Network Planner/2 database. IBM NetView
Network Planner/2 can also generate a file in the format that Trouble
Ticket/6000 can accept, allowing IBM NetView Network Planner/2 to
share configuration data with this problem management system.
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 can import data (created by the
RODMUNLD utility, other applications, or end users) from existing
RODM load files to reduce redefinition of existing RODM objects. A
utility is provided to instantiate the database with configuration
data from IBM LAN NetView Management Utilities. In addition, samples
are provided to collect configuration data from products such as LAN
NetView Management Utilities and IBM LAN Network Manager, which can
be used as models to prime the database from other sources. These
samples will be automatically shipped to users of record.
Through IBM Distributed Database Connectivity Services/2
(DDCS/2), data that IBM NetView Network Planner/2 collects can be
physically stored in DATABASE 2 (TM) (DB2 (R)) or any other
Distributed Relational Database Architecture (TM) (DRDA (TM))
supported database in the enterprise.
ACCESS TO ENTERPRISE DATA: IBM NetView Network Planner/2 uses an SQL
database, so the data can be shared with other SQL databases using
standard SQL import and export functions. In addition, with DDCS/2,
asset information can be made available across platforms throughout
the enterprise.
ENABLING NEW APPLICATIONS: Resource and configuration data that IBM
NetView Network Planner/2 collects can be loaded into NetView's RODM
to display graphically or enable automation, or the data can be sent
to Trouble Ticket/6000 to prime configuration fields in problem
reports.
ADMINISTRATOR PRODUCTIVITY: The capability to prime the IBM NetView
Network Planner/2 database with existing configuration data from a
RODM load file, LAN NetView Management Utilities and other SQL
databases reduces manual entry.
Through the construction of SQL applications, IBM NetView
Network Planner/2 can easily generate customized reports.
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 has a graphical user interface that
permits easy visualization of complex logical relationships. The
program uses point and click capability and drag and drop capability
to foster quick manipulation of the database. IBM NetView Network
Planner/2 also provides a HELP function to assist users with
questions.
USER FRIENDLY INTERFACE: By using the graphical user interface, IBM
NetView Network Planner/2 makes it easier to describe network and
system objects. Users can easily define, store and manipulate
information about network and system resources. In addition, users
can easily view RODM load files with the load file browse utility.
INDUSTRY STANDARDS: IBM NetView Network Planner/2 is CUA (TM) '91
compliant and has a user interface that conforms to SystemView
Integration Level 2, minimizing the time it takes for the user to
learn a new interface.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The IBM NetView Network Planner/2 is the first step in enterprise
configuration management on an OS/2 workstation. The initial
application available for this configuration data is the creation of
input for NetView's RODM.
The IBM NetView Network Planner/2 data model includes the
objects defined by the following data models:
o Graphic Monitor Facility Host Subsystem (GMFHS) feature of
NetView Version 2 Release 3
o NetView Version 2 Release 4
o Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking Topology and Accounting
Management (APPNTAM) feature of NetView Version 2 Release 4
o Managed resource objects of the NetView MultiSystem Manager
application.
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 is based on the same data model
as the IBM Network Configuration Application/MVS. NetView Network
Planner/2 can be used by customers who have a requirement for
configuration management that is not Information/Management based and
a requirement to load NetView's RODM.
Unlike IBM Network Design and Analysis/2, which designs
topology and routing for SNA networks, IBM NetView Network Planner/2
tracks inventory and configuration data for the enterprise and links
this to the operational data used by NetView.
LAN NetView Scan is designed to address the need for dynamic
configuration and inventory management of remote workstations. IBM
NetView Network Planner/2 is designed to be an administrative
database for enterprise-wide configuration and inventory.
IBM NetView Network Planner/2 has a user interface that
conforms to SystemView Integration Level 2.
