  44. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  45.            BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
  46.            This program assists human translators in translating from a selected
  47.            source language into a target language.  It aids in the complete
  48.            process, starting with terminology information being created at the
  49.            requirements gathering stage, through translation of documents,
  50.            translation of program-integrated text, dictionary creation and
  51.            updating, and maintenance of text and dictionaries.
  52.                   Regardless of the translator's environment, whether it is a
  53.            large translation environment, a small translation company, or a
  54.            one-person office, the general translation process can be broken down
  55.            into the following tasks:
  56.            o   Coordinating the translation
  57.            o   Translating
  58.            o   Terminology work
  59.                   TranslationManager/2 accelerates the translation process by
  60.            providing appropriate utilities to assist the translators,
  61.            translation coordinators, and terminologists.
  62.            END-USER PRODUCTIVITY
  63.            TranslationManager/2 provides the translator with a variety of
  64.            convenient and powerful translation, dictionary, terminology, and
  65.            linguistic support functions, which the translator can call upon as
  66.            needed during the various phases of the process, from preparation and
  67.            revision of the initial draft translation to completion of the final
  68.            output.  For example, an integrated word count utility and a
  69.            spellcheck facility help to simplify routine tasks of a translation
  70.            job.  The integrated Translation Memory and dictionary utility are
  71.            two major components that facilitate translating.  Whatever is
  72.            translated in TranslationManager/2 is saved in a translation memory
  73.            and can be reused when identical or similar texts are translated
  74.            again.  Dictionary entries are automatically displayed on the same
  75.            screen as the translation, and their translation parts can easily be
  76.            copied to the translation.
  77.                   These functions not only facilitate individual production
  78.            steps, but also eliminate conventional re-keyboarding operations,
  79.            with their associated typists and typing queues, thereby streamlining
  80.            the entire process.  Thus, the user can interactively carry out
  81.            translation-related functions and monitor the results directly on the
  82.            display screen as they occur.

  84.            TranslationManager/2 provides functions to manage system resources
  85.            and streamline the translation process for documentation and
  86.            program-integrated textual information.
  87.                   TranslationManager/2 works in a single-user or LAN
  88.            environment.  Several translators have concurrent and simultaneous
  89.            access.  It provides user-friendly dialogs to carry out translation
  90.            or dictionary creation and updating, comprehensive help functions and
  91.            the ability to perform time-consuming tasks as background jobs.

  110.            The architecture allows the support of additional input formats
  111.            through the use of tag tables.  The dictionary organization is highly
  112.            flexible to allow the growth from single word lists to a complex
  113.            multilingual terminology database.
  114.                   TranslationManager/2 improves the productivity of all
  115.            participating users in the translation production process and helps
  116.            customers develop a consistent translation management system.  Thus,
  117.            TranslationManager/2 lends itself well to a more highly structured
  118.            translation shop organization in a local area network  (LAN).  For
  119.            example, one or more individuals in an editorial function may use its
  120.            facilities for technical and/or stylistic review and revision of the
  121.            translations produced by various members of the translation staff,
  122.            while a terminology specialist may use TranslationManager/2's
  123.            dictionary creation and update facilities to maintain the currency of
  124.            the dictionary files accessed by the translation staff.
  125.                   TranslationManager/2 may be used as a basis to set up
  126.            enterprise-wide standards in translation and dictionary development.
  127.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  128.            TranslationManager/2 allows the customer to integrate translations
  129.            and dictionary files to optimize translation developments.
  130.                   Translations created at various locations and using different
  131.            translators or translation vendors can be combined.  Also,
  132.            translations, obtained previously by using the program, can be reused
  133.            and adapted through the translation memory function when translating
  134.            new versions of documentation or program text.
  135.            SYSTEM APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE (R) (SAA (R))
  136.            The SAA environment is OS/2.  The Common User Access (TM) (CUA (TM))
  137.            89' graphical model is used.  The program is enabled for SAA Delivery
  138.            Manager and for double-byte character set (DBCS), and is written in C
  139.            program language.

  142.            IBM TranslationManager/2 is shipped with an English, a French and a
  143.            German version.  The preferred language can be selected during the
  144.            installation step.
  145.                   A unique capability of TranslationManager/2 is the support of
  146.            19 source languages (see Language Support).  As for target languages,
  147.            any language supported by OS/2 can be used, including Japanese,
  148.            Korean, and Chinese.  Reduction to stem forms during automatic
  149.            dictionary lookup, sentence segmentation analysis, and spell checking
  150.            is available for the following languages:

  172.                   Any OS/2 supported language can be used as a target language,
  173.            including Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.  For correct display of

  176.            BILINGUAL DICTIONARIES
  177.            TranslationManager/2 does include bilingual dictionaries with basic
  178.            terminology in the following languages:
  179.            o   German / English, English / German
  180.            o   French / English, English / French
  181.            o   Italian / English, English / Italian
  182.            o   Spanish / English, English / Spanish
  183.                   On top machine-readable bilingual dictionaries with SGML
  184.            (standard generalized mark-up language) file structure are compatible
  185.            with TranslationManager/2 and can be obtained from various suppliers
  186.            and can be imported.
  187.            FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
  188.            TranslationManager/2 is used in a single-user or LAN environment.
  189.            Documents can be processed by different translators or terminologists
  190.            simultaneously, whereby each member of the team has access to
  191.            up-to-date information, thereby reducing inconsistencies.
  192.                   In particular, TranslationManager/2 offers the following
  193.            productivity facilities:
  194.            o   Translation editing.
  195.            o   Terminology management.
  196.            o   Translation memory.
  197.            o   Source text input formats.
  198.            o   Language support.
  199.            o   Online help and tutorial.
  200.            o   Administrative functions.
  201.            o   Interface to automatic machine translation.
  202.            o   Several users can access dictionaries and translation memories
  203.                concurrently by placing them on a LAN server.  This saves disk
  204.                space and makes changes available immediately to all users.
  205.                       The creator of the dictionaries and translation memories
  206.                can be displayed on request.
  207.            o   At your request, IBM TranslationManager/2 will flag translated
  208.                documents with revision codes of your choice.
  209.            o   In addition to using the IBM TranslationManager/2 export and
  210.                import functions, you can export and import documents by issuing
  211.                commands on the OS/2 command line.
  212.            o   You can export untranslated segments for further processing by
  213.                foreign applications.
  214.            o   You can view in more detail or print information from a
  215.                dictionary you are interested in, and you can control the layout
  216.                of the printed output.
  217.            o   At your choice, layout information can be protected or
  218.                unprotected or reduced to essential information only or even to a
  219.                single symbol.
  220.            o   The differences between original and fuzzy match are displayed in
  221.                a color selectable by you.
  222.            o   You can configure the translation editor to your taste.
  223.            o   IBM TranslationManager/2 provides more choices for you to
  224.                activate its windows.
  225.            o   The sample session can be run with additional language
  226.                combinations.
  227.            o   You can obtain a summary on how different segments have been
  228.                translated (accepted, modified, translated from scratch).
  229.            o   At your choice, fuzzy matches can be displayed in addition to
  230.                exact matches.
  231.            o   You can check for markup tags within segments which have been
  232.                changed inadvertently.
  233.            TRANSLATION EDITING
  234.            The translation editing facility is optimally designed to generate
  235.            and edit a translation.  The source language text, the translation
  236.            memory and the dictionary are displayed in three windows on the
  237.            screen of the user's workstation.  The user creates a target language
  238.            text by superimposing the translation on a copy of the source text.
  239.            The dictionary and translation memory runs parallel to the source
  240.            text segments to be translated and the matching translation memory
  241.            and dictionary entries  are automatically displayed.  In addition to
  242.            translation-specific editing commands, the user can "paste"
  243.            information by one hot key stroke from the translation memory and/or
  244.            dictionary window, (that is, translations of text segments or
  245.            dictionary terms), into the source/target text window.  Any newly
  246.            translated segment is automatically added to  the translation memory,
  247.            increasing  the knowledge base of the system.
  248.                   Formatting tags are recognized during translation.  Recognized
  249.            tags may be protected, unprotected or hidden during the translation
  250.            or editing, so that they can be used unchanged in the target text
  251.            thereby saving re-layouting.  Also, on request the whole dictionary
  252.            entry of a term can be displayed using a keyboard or mouse.
  253.                   The user specifies a translation memory database which shall
  254.            be used for searching for already translated text segments.  Any
  255.            matching identical or similar segment will be displayed in the
  256.            translation memory window.
  257.            TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT
  258.            Comprehensive terminology management in TranslationManager/2
  259.            encompasses dictionary creation, updating, maintenance, and text
  260.            analysis.
  261.            CREATION AND MAINTENANCE OF TERMINOLOGY DATABASES:
  262.            TranslationManager/2 provides tools to support the creation and
  263.            maintenance of up-to-date terminology databases, whether they are
  264.            personalized glossaries tailored to the requirements of individual
  265.            translators, dictionaries developed for the use of the entire
  266.            translation staff, or compiled for publication and dissemination to a
  267.            wider audience.
  268.            DICTIONARY LOOKUP FACILITY WITH DIFFERENT SEARCH CRITERIA:  When
  269.            looking up a term in the dictionaries, the user can search for the
  270.            following criteria: headword, translation, synonym, related term,
  271.            abbreviation, neighborhood (preceding and following terms in
  272.            appropriate alphabetic order), and compounds (word forms consisting
  273.            of two or more parts that are also bases).
  274.            FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE OF ENTRIES:  The dictionary entry structure is
  275.            adaptable to the requirements of the user and may have four levels
  276.            (which again can be subdivided in fields according to the user's
  277.            preference): entry level, homonym level, sense level, and target
  278.            level.
  279.            TEXT ANALYSIS TO SUPPORT TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT:  The text analysis
  280.            facility allows (1) the generation of a list of terms found in the
  281.            specified dictionaries, and (2) a list of terms which are not found
  282.            in the specified dictionaries and which can serve the terminologist
  283.            as the principal source of input for dictionary updating.
  284.            TERMINOLOGY INTERCHANGE WITH OTHER SYSTEMS VIA IMPORT/EXPORT
  285.            FUNCTIONS:  Dictionary and terminology databases using tags
  286.            (formatting controls) based on SGML can be imported into the
  287.            TranslationManager/2 environment or exported from it.
  288.            PROTECTING DICTIONARIES:  TranslationManager/2 allows the use of
  289.            read-write dictionaries, (that is, dictionaries that can be modified
  290.            by any user), as well as dictionaries that are in read-only mode,
  291.            (password-protected dictionaries).
  292.            LOOKUP OF DICTIONARY ENTRIES FROM WITHIN EDITING:  In addition to the
  293.            standard editing functions necessary when translating a document, the
  294.            user can look up terms directly from within the edit environment.
  295.            DICTIONARY HIERARCHY SPECIFICATION:  The user can specify a
  296.            dictionary hierarchy, (that is, an order in which the dictionaries
  297.            are searched for the lookup of a term).  The user can also switch
  298.            between different dictionaries displaying dictionary entries from the
  299.            same or different dictionaries in a "cascading" panel sequence.
  300.            TRANSLATION MEMORY
  301.            The Translation Memory, which is a database containing previously
  302.            translated text segments, (such as sentences or headlines, added
  303.            during translation) is a powerful translation aid.  This memory helps
  304.            to ensure the consistent translation of identical or similar text and
  305.            thereby speed up the translation process.  When translating source
  306.            texts of similar nature (for example, a new version of a  document or
  307.            manuals describing different models of the same product), the high
  308.            quality translation of previously translated source text segments are
  309.            automatically retrieved from memory and moved into the target window.
  310.            This facilitates the job of translating enormously, since successive
  311.            versions of the same or similar texts often have to be translated in
  312.            a technical translation environment.
  313.            AUTOMATIC UPDATE:  After completing translation of each source text
  314.            segment, source and corresponding target segment are automatically
  315.            stored in the translation memory.
  316.            EXACT OR FUZZY MATCHES:  When activating a new segment, the
  317.            translation memory database is searched to find exact or similar
  318.            (fuzzy) segments matching the current (active) one.  If one or more
  319.            matches are found, the corresponding target segment is displayed in
  320.            the translation memory window.  The user can retrieve the appropriate
  321.            segment with one keystroke, (that is, copy the selected translation
  322.            memory proposal into the current (active) segment).
  323.            AUTOMATIC REPLACE INTERACTIVELY OR IN BATCH MODE:  If the user knows
  324.            that a translation memory file for an almost identical document
  325.            exists (for example, revision of a document), the user can decide to
  326.            use the automatic replace mode either interactively during editing or
  327.            in batch during analysis.
  328.            SOURCE TEXT INPUT FORMATS
  329.            A variety of source document input formats are recognized in
  330.            TranslationManager/2, such as ASCII, BookMaster, IPF, and  RTF.
  331.            Tagged texts are recognized by tag tables, which the user can set up
  332.            and which are used during translation, actually in a prior step
  333.            called text analysis, to indicate segments of text.  If non-tagged
  334.            source input comes from text processing programs which do not include
  335.            tags, such as WordPerfect or DisplayWrite (R), the IBM program
  336.            product TextTagger (5706-257) or another conversion program can be
  337.            used to convert such input.
  338.                   It is important to note that, since the tags are protected
  339.            during translation (if the user so desires), they reappear in the
  340.            target (translated) text, thereby saving the re-layout job.
  341.            Additional input formats are supported by user-defined tag tables.
  342. CUSTINFO   PUBLICATIONS
  343.                   One copy of each of the following publications is supplied

  349. TECHINFO   TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  350.            SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
  351.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  The following hardware is required  to  run
  352.            TranslationManager/2, having one source language installed:
  353.            o   Any  system unit supported by OS/2 2.0 or follow-on including
  354.                DBCS supported systems (minimum recommended system is the IBM
  355.                PS/2 Model 70 or equivalent)
  356.            o   System memory of 8.0MB
  357.            o   Disk storage of at least 15MB free for TranslationManager/2
  358.            o   IBM PS/2 Mouse (optional)
  359.            o   Display and display adapter as supported by OS/2  2.0  or follow
  360.                on.
  361.                   For any further installed source language, an additional 2MB
  362.            of disk space should be provided.  During the running of a
  363.            translation project, disk space is needed in the size of
  364.            approximately 5 times of the size of the files to be translated.  The
  365.            translation memory will result in approximately twice the size of the
  366.            material to be translated.
  367.            PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS:  OS/2 Version 2.0 or higher.  When using
  368.            TranslationManager/2 in a LAN environment, the appropriate server and
  369.            requester software of OS/2 Version 2.0 will be necessary.
  370.            COMPATIBILITY:  Language Support Files previously installed with IBM
  371.            SAA AD/Cycle (R) TranslationManager/2 (Program Number 5621-327) are
  372.            compatible with the Language Support Files delivered with IBM
  373.            TranslationManager/2.
  374.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  375.            PACKAGING:  The program will be available on a 3.5-inch diskette.
  376.            Also the appropriate documentation will be shipped with the program,
  377.            including a list of dictionary providers.
  378.            SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
  379.                   The IBM TranslationManager/2 uses the security and
  380.            auditability features of OS/2.
  381.                   Customer management is responsible for evaluation, selection,
  382.            and implementation of security features, administrative procedures,
  383.            and appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  384.            facilities.
  385.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and

  389. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION
  390.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.  Unless a later
  391.            date is specified, orders entered prior to the planned availability
