OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
This program assists human translators in translating from a selected
source language into a target language. It aids in the complete
process, starting with terminology information being created at the
requirements gathering stage, through translation of documents,
translation of program-integrated text, dictionary creation and
updating, and maintenance of text and dictionaries.
Regardless of the translator's environment, whether it is a
large translation environment, a small translation company, or a
one-person office, the general translation process can be broken down
into the following tasks:
o Coordinating the translation
o Translating
o Terminology work
TranslationManager/2 accelerates the translation process by
providing appropriate utilities to assist the translators,
translation coordinators, and terminologists.
END-USER PRODUCTIVITY
TranslationManager/2 provides the translator with a variety of
convenient and powerful translation, dictionary, terminology, and
linguistic support functions, which the translator can call upon as
needed during the various phases of the process, from preparation and
revision of the initial draft translation to completion of the final
output. For example, an integrated word count utility and a
spellcheck facility help to simplify routine tasks of a translation
job. The integrated Translation Memory and dictionary utility are
two major components that facilitate translating. Whatever is
translated in TranslationManager/2 is saved in a translation memory
and can be reused when identical or similar texts are translated
again. Dictionary entries are automatically displayed on the same
screen as the translation, and their translation parts can easily be
copied to the translation.
These functions not only facilitate individual production
steps, but also eliminate conventional re-keyboarding operations,
with their associated typists and typing queues, thereby streamlining
the entire process. Thus, the user can interactively carry out
translation-related functions and monitor the results directly on the
display screen as they occur.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
TranslationManager/2 provides functions to manage system resources
and streamline the translation process for documentation and
program-integrated textual information.
TranslationManager/2 works in a single-user or LAN
environment. Several translators have concurrent and simultaneous
access. It provides user-friendly dialogs to carry out translation
or dictionary creation and updating, comprehensive help functions and
the ability to perform time-consuming tasks as background jobs.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
TranslationManager/2 can handle different document input formats,
such as:
o Plain ASCII text
o BookMaster (R)
o IPF
o RTF
o Textual information integrated in program files.
o AMI Pro (Ami Pro for Windows (1), Version 2.0) (2)
o Interleaf (3) (saved as ASCII files)
o Ventura Publisher (4)
o WordPerfect (Version 5.0) (5)
o Text in ASSEMBLER program files (text within single quotes)
(1) Registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation
(2) Trademark of Lotus Development Corporation
(3) Trademark of Interleaf
(4) Trademark of Ventura
(5) Trademark of WordPerfect Corporation
The architecture allows the support of additional input formats
through the use of tag tables. The dictionary organization is highly
flexible to allow the growth from single word lists to a complex
multilingual terminology database.
TranslationManager/2 improves the productivity of all
participating users in the translation production process and helps
customers develop a consistent translation management system. Thus,
TranslationManager/2 lends itself well to a more highly structured
translation shop organization in a local area network (LAN). For
example, one or more individuals in an editorial function may use its
facilities for technical and/or stylistic review and revision of the
translations produced by various members of the translation staff,
while a terminology specialist may use TranslationManager/2's
dictionary creation and update facilities to maintain the currency of
the dictionary files accessed by the translation staff.
TranslationManager/2 may be used as a basis to set up
enterprise-wide standards in translation and dictionary development.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
TranslationManager/2 allows the customer to integrate translations
and dictionary files to optimize translation developments.
Translations created at various locations and using different
translators or translation vendors can be combined. Also,
translations, obtained previously by using the program, can be reused
and adapted through the translation memory function when translating
new versions of documentation or program text.
SYSTEM APPLICATION ARCHITECTURE (R) (SAA (R))
The SAA environment is OS/2. The Common User Access (TM) (CUA (TM))
89' graphical model is used. The program is enabled for SAA Delivery
Manager and for double-byte character set (DBCS), and is written in C
program language.

o French, national
o German, national
o Italian
o Spanish
Any OS/2 supported language can be used as a target language,
including Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. For correct display of
national characters, the source and target language should be in the
same code-page (for example, ASCII 850).
BILINGUAL DICTIONARIES
TranslationManager/2 does include bilingual dictionaries with basic
terminology in the following languages:
o German / English, English / German
o French / English, English / French
o Italian / English, English / Italian
o Spanish / English, English / Spanish
On top machine-readable bilingual dictionaries with SGML
(standard generalized mark-up language) file structure are compatible
with TranslationManager/2 and can be obtained from various suppliers
and can be imported.
FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
TranslationManager/2 is used in a single-user or LAN environment.
Documents can be processed by different translators or terminologists
simultaneously, whereby each member of the team has access to
up-to-date information, thereby reducing inconsistencies.
In particular, TranslationManager/2 offers the following
productivity facilities:
o Translation editing.
o Terminology management.
o Translation memory.
o Source text input formats.
o Language support.
o Online help and tutorial.
o Administrative functions.
o Interface to automatic machine translation.
o Several users can access dictionaries and translation memories
concurrently by placing them on a LAN server. This saves disk
space and makes changes available immediately to all users.
The creator of the dictionaries and translation memories
can be displayed on request.
o At your request, IBM TranslationManager/2 will flag translated
documents with revision codes of your choice.
o In addition to using the IBM TranslationManager/2 export and
import functions, you can export and import documents by issuing
commands on the OS/2 command line.
o You can export untranslated segments for further processing by
foreign applications.
o You can view in more detail or print information from a
dictionary you are interested in, and you can control the layout
of the printed output.
o At your choice, layout information can be protected or
unprotected or reduced to essential information only or even to a
single symbol.
o The differences between original and fuzzy match are displayed in
a color selectable by you.
o You can configure the translation editor to your taste.
o IBM TranslationManager/2 provides more choices for you to
activate its windows.
o The sample session can be run with additional language
combinations.
o You can obtain a summary on how different segments have been
translated (accepted, modified, translated from scratch).
o At your choice, fuzzy matches can be displayed in addition to
exact matches.
o You can check for markup tags within segments which have been
changed inadvertently.
TRANSLATION EDITING
The translation editing facility is optimally designed to generate
and edit a translation. The source language text, the translation
memory and the dictionary are displayed in three windows on the
screen of the user's workstation. The user creates a target language
text by superimposing the translation on a copy of the source text.
The dictionary and translation memory runs parallel to the source
text segments to be translated and the matching translation memory
and dictionary entries are automatically displayed. In addition to
translation-specific editing commands, the user can "paste"
information by one hot key stroke from the translation memory and/or
dictionary window, (that is, translations of text segments or
dictionary terms), into the source/target text window. Any newly
translated segment is automatically added to the translation memory,
increasing the knowledge base of the system.
Formatting tags are recognized during translation. Recognized
tags may be protected, unprotected or hidden during the translation
or editing, so that they can be used unchanged in the target text
thereby saving re-layouting. Also, on request the whole dictionary
entry of a term can be displayed using a keyboard or mouse.
The user specifies a translation memory database which shall
be used for searching for already translated text segments. Any
matching identical or similar segment will be displayed in the
translation memory window.
TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT
Comprehensive terminology management in TranslationManager/2
encompasses dictionary creation, updating, maintenance, and text
analysis.
CREATION AND MAINTENANCE OF TERMINOLOGY DATABASES:
TranslationManager/2 provides tools to support the creation and
maintenance of up-to-date terminology databases, whether they are
personalized glossaries tailored to the requirements of individual
translators, dictionaries developed for the use of the entire
translation staff, or compiled for publication and dissemination to a
wider audience.
DICTIONARY LOOKUP FACILITY WITH DIFFERENT SEARCH CRITERIA: When
looking up a term in the dictionaries, the user can search for the
following criteria: headword, translation, synonym, related term,
abbreviation, neighborhood (preceding and following terms in
appropriate alphabetic order), and compounds (word forms consisting
of two or more parts that are also bases).
FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE OF ENTRIES: The dictionary entry structure is
adaptable to the requirements of the user and may have four levels
(which again can be subdivided in fields according to the user's
preference): entry level, homonym level, sense level, and target
level.
TEXT ANALYSIS TO SUPPORT TERMINOLOGY MANAGEMENT: The text analysis
facility allows (1) the generation of a list of terms found in the
specified dictionaries, and (2) a list of terms which are not found
in the specified dictionaries and which can serve the terminologist
as the principal source of input for dictionary updating.
TERMINOLOGY INTERCHANGE WITH OTHER SYSTEMS VIA IMPORT/EXPORT
FUNCTIONS: Dictionary and terminology databases using tags
(formatting controls) based on SGML can be imported into the
TranslationManager/2 environment or exported from it.
PROTECTING DICTIONARIES: TranslationManager/2 allows the use of
read-write dictionaries, (that is, dictionaries that can be modified
by any user), as well as dictionaries that are in read-only mode,
(password-protected dictionaries).
LOOKUP OF DICTIONARY ENTRIES FROM WITHIN EDITING: In addition to the
standard editing functions necessary when translating a document, the
user can look up terms directly from within the edit environment.
DICTIONARY HIERARCHY SPECIFICATION: The user can specify a
dictionary hierarchy, (that is, an order in which the dictionaries
are searched for the lookup of a term). The user can also switch
between different dictionaries displaying dictionary entries from the
same or different dictionaries in a "cascading" panel sequence.
TRANSLATION MEMORY
The Translation Memory, which is a database containing previously
translated text segments, (such as sentences or headlines, added
during translation) is a powerful translation aid. This memory helps
to ensure the consistent translation of identical or similar text and
thereby speed up the translation process. When translating source
texts of similar nature (for example, a new version of a document or
manuals describing different models of the same product), the high
quality translation of previously translated source text segments are
automatically retrieved from memory and moved into the target window.
This facilitates the job of translating enormously, since successive
versions of the same or similar texts often have to be translated in
a technical translation environment.
AUTOMATIC UPDATE: After completing translation of each source text
segment, source and corresponding target segment are automatically
stored in the translation memory.
EXACT OR FUZZY MATCHES: When activating a new segment, the
translation memory database is searched to find exact or similar
(fuzzy) segments matching the current (active) one. If one or more
matches are found, the corresponding target segment is displayed in
the translation memory window. The user can retrieve the appropriate
segment with one keystroke, (that is, copy the selected translation
memory proposal into the current (active) segment).
AUTOMATIC REPLACE INTERACTIVELY OR IN BATCH MODE: If the user knows
that a translation memory file for an almost identical document
exists (for example, revision of a document), the user can decide to
use the automatic replace mode either interactively during editing or
in batch during analysis.
SOURCE TEXT INPUT FORMATS
A variety of source document input formats are recognized in
TranslationManager/2, such as ASCII, BookMaster, IPF, and RTF.
Tagged texts are recognized by tag tables, which the user can set up
and which are used during translation, actually in a prior step
called text analysis, to indicate segments of text. If non-tagged
source input comes from text processing programs which do not include
tags, such as WordPerfect or DisplayWrite (R), the IBM program
product TextTagger (5706-257) or another conversion program can be
used to convert such input.
It is important to note that, since the tags are protected
during translation (if the user so desires), they reappear in the
target (translated) text, thereby saving the re-layout job.
Additional input formats are supported by user-defined tag tables.

One copy of each of the following publications is supplied
automatically with the basic machine-readable material:
o IBM TranslationManager/2
