TITLE IBM VISUAL DOCUMENT LIBRARY -- SERVER AND CLIENT PACKAGE
ABSTRACT Workgroup computing is changing the way businesses operate.
Today, with the right tools, people can communicate and work together
more effectively.
The ability to access the right information at the right time
across diverse workgroups is a key business challenge. IBM Visual
Document Library, a new electronic document management library and
retrieval system for LAN networks, can help.
IBM Visual Document Library is based on a client/server
architecture with Operating System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) for the server
and includes major elements of DATABASE 2 (TM) for Operating System/2
(DB2/2 (TM)), IBM's core database technology. IBM Visual Document
Library is a powerful and affordable software product that can store,
organize, and retrieve vital business information -- regardless of
its location within the library.
IBM Visual Document Library provides a common area for
workgroup members to store and manipulate information with easy
access, quick retrieval, and sophisticated search capabilities. End
users are provided an object-oriented graphical user interface
exploiting the OS/2 Workplace Shell (R).
IBM Visual Document Library provides safeguards against
deliberate or accidental data destruction. Library objects can be
protected from unauthorized access. Data can also be secured during
update through check-out and check-in facilities. User
authentication determines an individual's access to a library
document.
IBM Visual Document Library's open design supports industry
standards, accommodates alternative database technologies, and offers
seamless integration with key desktop applications. For example, a
user working within a word-processing program could access IBM Visual
Document Library, locate and work with a document, and then store the
results in the library.
IBM Visual Document Library streamlines document processing
across interconnected LANs and gives diverse workgroups quick and
easy access to reliable information. The IBM Visual Document Library
client and server operate on OS/2 Version 2.1 in either an IBM LAN
Server 3.0 or Novell (1) NetWare (2) 4.0 environment.
The first customer shipment of IBM Visual Document Library
will be by June 30, 1994, to a selected set of customers. These
customers will participate in a program designed to validate that IBM
has achieved the quality objectives for IBM Visual Document Library
in a variety of production environments. When these customers
confirm that IBM has achieved its quality objectives, IBM will
announce the planned availability date and ordering information.
Planned Availability Date: To be announced at a later date.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
IBM Visual Document Library provides an OS/2-based
client/server interactive graphical front-end capability to manage
libraries. Functions include:
o Storage and retrieval
o Backup
o Recovery
o Archive support
o Browsing
o Parametric and contextual searching
o Application integration
YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
The IBM Visual Document Library solution for storing and retrieving
business information across workgroups enhances your decision-making
capability by providing timely access to pertinent data. Data
objects can be stored and accessed online, reducing the need for
hardcopy creation and storage. You can access data objects through
various search criteria. Document changes are available immediately
rather than waiting for distribution through conventional means, such
as paper-based distribution.
ACCESS FUNCTIONS FROM OTHER APPLICATIONS
IBM Visual Document Library provides facilities to allow you to
access IBM Visual Document Library functions from within popular
desktop applications, such as WordPerfect (3), Ami Pro (4), and Lotus
1-2-3 (5). IBM Visual Document Library can send files using the VIM
interface that is supported by electronic mail applications such as
cc:Mail (6) and Lotus Notes (5).
ACCESS TO ENTERPRISE DATA
IBM Visual Document Library you to manage data in a manner best for a
specific environment. Data objects can be distributed across
multiple servers, on one or more LANs. End users accessing
information in the library do not need to know the location of the
documents, even if located on multiple LANs or servers.
DECENTRALIZED CONTROL IMPROVEMENTS
Using IBM Visual Document Library, data can be managed at a
departmental LAN level or moved to a centralized server for common
access by a larger population. Data objects can be split across LAN
servers. The customer can choose a centralized or decentralized mode
of operation. As the company grows or changes, the data storage
requirements remain flexible and the user interface remains
consistent.
END-USER PRODUCTIVITY
IBM Visual Document Library provides an easy-to-use interactive
graphical front end. The object-oriented design using the OS/2
Workplace Shell and the System Object Model (SOM) enable the user
easily to perform complex searches to access documents. This reduces
the time required to find and retrieve data objects and increases the
user's efficiency in answering queries. It can also improve quality
of customer service.
SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS
IBM Visual Document Library provides safeguards against deliberate or
accidental data destruction. Data integrity can be assured during
update through check-out and check-in facilities. Data objects can
be secured to allow access only to specific users.
DATA INTEGRITY IMPROVEMENTS
The system is designed through archival support and transaction
recovery support to provide a data environment with integrity. A
backup and restore capability is also provided.
ADMINISTRATION IMPROVEMENTS
IBM Visual Document Library provides an easy-to-use graphical
administration application to allow customer personnel to administer
IBM Visual Document Library servers.
OPEN ENTERPRISE: Document Filing and Retrieval (DFR) -- (ISO/IEC
10166)
IBM Visual Document Library function and data content are
semantically consistent with the DFR International Standard. The
design implements a significant portion of the DFR Basic Attributes
and functions.

PRODUCT POSITIONING
IBM VISUAL DOCUMENT LIBRARY AND IBM SEARCHMANAGER/2
IBM Visual Document Library incorporates the OS/2 search engine from
the IBM SearchManager family of products. These products provide
text search client/server offerings in the LAN, MVS, VM, and AS/400
(R) environments; AIX/6000 (TM) support is a stated direction.
IBM SearchManager/2 is a single workstation and LAN product
providing text retrieval and administration function. The IBM
SearchManager/2 single workstation environment supports OS/2 users,
while the IBM SearchManager/2 LAN environment supports both OS/2 and
DOS Windows (7) clients. IBM SearchManager/2 interfaces with
existing customer file systems and provides support in those file
systems for indexing, searching, and retrieving data. It does not
depend on an associated library and it is independent of the document
formats used. Customers with existing file systems could use IBM
SearchManager/2 to provide a front-end index and search facility.
IBM Visual Document Library combines IBM SearchManager/2's
full-text search capabilities with library function and multi-server
accessibility. Customers looking for an integrated document
management library and retrieval system with function such as folder
management, revision control, archival support, recovery, plus
parametric and contextual search capabilities would select IBM Visual
Document Library. Both IBM SearchManager/2 and IBM Visual Document
Library target portions of the office market, but the customer
requirements differ.
IBM VISUAL DOCUMENT LIBRARY AND IMAGEPLUS (R) VISUALINFO (TM) FOR
OS/2
IBM Visual Document Library is intended primarily for text-oriented
environments in which revising the data is a requirement. Knowledge
workers will use IBM Visual Document Library as an aid to
productivity, both personally and in collaboration with their
workgroups. IBM Visual Document Library provides full text search
and the sophisticated controls to facilitate the easy access,
revision, and tracking of data. It can store and manage all data
formats, including image.
IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 is primarily intended for an
image oriented environment in which the data is generally unaltered
and is to be used as part of an on-going business process, such as
the processing of insurance claims. A usual objective of this type
of processing is the elimination of paper documents and the
reengineering of business processes throughout the enterprise. IBM
ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 can store and manage documents in all
formats, including text.
The key differentiation between IBM Visual Document Library
and IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 is in the application use of
the data which is stored by each product.
