TITLE FAXROUTER/2 HIGH-PERFORMANCE FACSIMILE SOLUTION VERSION 2.0
ABSTRACT FaxRouter/2 Version 2.0 is an "industrial strength" enterprise
facsimile solution for companies of all sizes. FaxRouter/2 is a
local area network (LAN)-based solution that provides the capability
to send, receive, archive, display, distribute, print, and delete
facsimiles from a user's OS/2 (R) or Windows (1) workstation.
Received facsimiles can be automatically routed to a user or group of
users of the FaxRouter/2 LAN via Dual Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) or
optical mark recognition (OMR). Outgoing facsimiles can originate
from a standard text file, another facsimile, or several types of
image files. All hardware required by a facsimile solution is
installed in the FaxRouter/2 server, thus eliminating the need for
additional hardware or phone lines at the user's workstation.
FaxRouter/2 is fully integrated with ImagePlus VisualInfo (TM)
allowing incoming facsimiles to be routed directly to designated
VisualInfo workstations. In addition, via the FaxRouter/2 ImagePlus
Integration feature, in-bound and out-bound facsimile support is also
provided to the MVS/ESA (TM) image platform.
FaxRouter/2 Version 2.0 provides the ability to integrate your
business processes with the use of an OS/2 virtual printer driver.
Files can be FAXed just by printing from an OS/2 or OS/2-Windows
application.
FaxRouter/2 Version 2.0 is the corporate facsimile (FAX)
platform providing a greatly enhanced tool kit for integrating
facsimiles into "FAX-enabling" your current business applications.
Through the use of a flexible set of application programming
interfaces (APIs), your business systems can be tailored by you to
include facsimile to meet individual needs.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
AUTOMATIC ROUTING
Received facsimiles can automatically be routed to a user, or a group
of users of the FaxRouter/2 LAN. Each FaxRouter/2 user is assigned a
routing code. A facsimile received for that routing code will
generate a notification message to that user. A default routing code
can be defined for facsimiles received without routing codes.
Standard routing codes can be established for "printing and saving"
or "printing and deleting". Facsimiles can also be automatically
routed to an application. Routing is accomplished via routing exits.
Routing exits are assigned by user or application ID. Routing exits
allow for the flexible integration into existing business
applications.
ENABLE CUSTOMER'S SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS: With the inbound routing
capability of FaxRouter/2, received facsimiles can be routed directly
to a user or business application therefore helping to provide the
ability to handle inquires more quickly and effectively.
IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY: Automatic routing of received
facsimiles eliminates the need for a central facsimile receive
station and a system to distribute the facsimile to the recipient.
The worker receives notification that a facsimile has arrived and can
view the facsimile at their workstation without leaving the desk.
This reduces the processing time, thus helping allow the worker to
become more efficient.
DATA INTEGRITY IMPROVEMENTS: By eliminating the need for paper,
facsimile documents are not manually distributed. Many times,
facsimiles are received back to back. The process of separating
facsimiles destined for different people can unintentionally cause a
facsimile to be distributed to the wrong person or lost. With the
use of an automated routing system, facsimiles are always distributed
directly to the worker. In the case a routing code was entered
incorrectly, FaxRouter/2 maintains an audit trail of received
facsimiles for easy tracking.
SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS: The FaxRouter/2 RECEIVE list that a user
displays will only show facsimiles routed to that user or unrouted
facsimiles. A default routing code can be defined by the
administrator to ensure there will be no unrouted facsimiles. A user
can only perform facsimile manipulation functions on facsimiles that
are displayed in the user's receive list.
FACSIMILE DISPLAY/MANIPULATION FUNCTIONS
Facsimiles listed in a user's RECEIVE list can be displayed on the
user's workstation, thus eliminating the need for paper fax machines.
Displayed images can be rotated in 90 (degs) increments if they are
sent landscape. They can be magnified from 0 to 999% if there are
unreadable portions of the facsimile. An overview window is provided
to give the user a perspective of the viewed facsimile. A
customizable tool bar of icons can also be used to help maximize the
productivity of commonly used functions, including displaying,
printing, deleting, rotating and magnifying a displayed image. The
FaxRouter/2 client software end-user interface complies to the SAA
CUA 91 standard and supports drag and drop technology. FaxRouter/2
also provides a virtual print driver in the OS/2 and Windows
environments. A user running an applications in those environments
can use that application's print function and call the FaxRouter/2
Print Driver. The FaxRouter/2 SEND panel will be displayed and the
facsimile will be scheduled for outbound fax on the server.
ENABLE CUSTOMER'S SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS: The ability to immediately
display and position a facsimile at the user's workstation helps the
customer to provide fast, quality, and effective service to their
customers. Shrinking the cycle time of work tasks can lead to
improved customer satisfaction with your business.
INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS: FaxRouter/2 provides a seamless
integration with other workstation applications that use the
operating environment print facilities. Using a word processor to
print a document can result in FAXing the document instead. This
allows the customer to gain full benefit of FaxRouter/2 while working
with existing workstation applications.
REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: FaxRouter/2 eliminates the
requirement for an office with numerous FAX machines. Since most
facsimiles are received and generated electronically, no paper is
needed to print the facsimile. All the space and power required to
operate the paper FAX machines can be applied to other business
needs.
IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY: The FaxRouter/2 user can perform their
tasks without the interruption of walking to a FAX machine to send,
resend, or receive a facsimile. The time savings alone can allow for
an increase in their workload. Work tasks can be completed in a more
timely manner without having to wait for an available FAX machine.
SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS: FaxRouter/2 maintains electronic images of
facsimiles that only a user or administrator can process. Facsimiles
are treated as confidential documents that will not be left on a desk
or a FAX machine. Electronic facsimiles will not be misplaced as is
the nature with paper documents.
STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE-INDUSTRY STANDARDS: FaxRouter/2 complies with
the SAA CUA 91 architecture and "drag and drop" specifications of
workstations in a client/server environment. Facsimiles received are
stored in a standard CCITT Group 4 compressed format and placed in an
IBM standard Mixed Object Document Content Architecture (MO:DCA)
wrapper. FaxRouter/2 supports the following input data streams for
fax-out: TIFF with No Compression, CCITT Group 3 1-dimensional MH,
PackBits Compression and CCITT T.4 bi-level.
FACSIMILE SERVER PROCESSING
FaxRouter/2 provides the many benefits associated with client/server
processing. Behind the scenes processing help free up the user's
workstation to perform other more critical tasks. All facsimiles
both received and ready to send are stored on the FaxRouter/2 server.
Received facsimiles are stored on the server until the user deletes
them or they are "programmatically" deleted by an application.
Facsimiles to be sent are stored on the server until they are
successfully sent or a user-specified retry limit has been reached.
The FaxRouter/2 administrator has the ability to define the number of
retries to be attempted and a minimum period of time between each
retry. The status of an outbound facsimile will be sent to the user
that initiated the facsimile via a notification message.
Notifications are performed within a FaxRouter/2 notification exit.
Currently, the local LAN messaging facility is used. However, an
installation could perform any type of notification from within this
exit. FaxRouter/2 maintains two logs, a RECEIVE log and a SEND log.
The logs act as a facsimile-solution audit trail and can be viewed by
each user. The FaxRouter/2 administrator can establish automated
procedures for archiving and purging the logs after a given time
period.
ENABLE CUSTOMER'S SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS: Customer satisfaction can be
achieved when you send a facsimile to a person while talking to them
on the phone, without leaving your desk. Other business-related
functions can be performed at the same time the facsimile is being
sent.
INCREASED CAPACITY/PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT: The FaxRouter/2 solution
can increase your facsimile capacity by sending facsimiles when
server FAX cards are available. Multiple FAX cards can improve your
throughput without requiring manual intervention at a FAX machine. A
LAN facsimile solution can require less phone lines than a manual FAX
machine solution for the same amount of work.
IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY: The FaxRouter/2 user will not have to
wait in line for an available FAX machine. They will not have to try
again when the recipient's FAX phone number is busy. They will not
have to periodically search for their received facsimiles, because
FaxRouter/2 will notify them of a received facsimile. FaxRouter/2
provides a centralized on-line audit trail of received and sent
facsimiles where a paper log must be printed at each FAX machine in
the office and manually combined.
DATA INTEGRITY IMPROVEMENTS: FaxRouter/2 stores all received and
ready-to-send facsimiles on the server. This concept of centrally
managing your facsimiles helps reduce the unintentional and
intentional loss of all your facsimiles.
IMPROVED SYSTEMS AVAILABILITY: The FaxRouter/2 server provides error
recovery of all inbound and outbound facsimile queues in case of a
power failure in your building. This would allow for reduced
duration of outages. Since facsimiles are stored on the FaxRouter/2
server, a user can view their facsimiles from another workstation
provided that local LAN security was established.
APPLICATION PROGRAMMER'S TOOL KIT
FaxRouter/2 offers a flexible and robust application programming
interface (API) which allows a customer to integrate, or
"FAX-enable", their existing business applications. The programming
interface allows an application to communicate directly with the
FaxRouter/2 server, without requiring a client workstation. With the
power of OS/2 and the FaxRouter/2 API on the server, FaxRouter/2 can
integrate with any platform, thus becoming the total enterprise
facsimile solution for companies of all sizes.
INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS: With the use of services
offerings from IBM and IBM Business Partners, existing business
applications can be "FAX-enabled" to provide a seamless integration.
This integration will maintain the common user interface provided by
the existing application. Users need only learn how to FAX and not
an entirely new application. This helps reduce the time it takes to
implement new function in existing business systems.
IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY: By "FAX-enabling" your business
application, users can reduce the time it takes to print and manually
FAX a document or letter to their customers. Using the FaxRouter/2
API, facsimile function can be integrated directly into your existing
business systems. Workers will not have to spend time walking to and
from a FAX machine.
APPLICATION DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY: The FaxRouter/2 contains
strategically placed and well documented APIs and Exits within the
facsimile solution process. These well documented, high-level APIs
will help reduce the time and effort required for an application
programmer to "FAX-enable" your business systems.
IMAGEPLUS INTEGRATION
FaxRouter/2 is an application enabler for ImagePlus VisualInfo.
Facsimiles can be received and sent from VisualInfo workstations.
With the use of routing codes, inbound facsimiles can be
automatically placed in ImagePlus VisualInfo workbaskets ready for
processing. VisualInfo and FaxRouter/2 are also fully integrated for
outbound FAX operation. Outbound transmissions of documents stored
in the VisualInfo library is initiated when a FAX menu option is
selected from the VisualInfo client application. This invokes the
FaxRouter/2 client Send API to FAX the document. The client Send API
supports single- and multiple-document sends.
FaxRouter/2 also provides inbound and outbound facsimile
support for ImagePlus MVS/ESA, including ImagePlus Object
Distribution Manager/2. Through an optional feature, FaxRouter/2
will integrate with ImagePlus Folder Application Facility to provide
a turnkey facsimile solution for ImagePlus users. An application
programming interface (API) is supplied with the feature for
customers that have built their own front-end image application.
These APIs are supported in the CICS and IMS environments.
ENABLE CUSTOMER'S SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS: By integrating FaxRouter/2,
ImagePlus VisualInfo and ImagePlus MVS/ESA, workers can be more
responsive to their customers, thus helping create a higher level of
customer satisfaction. The immediate access to a customer's file and
the associated image documents is a major step toward handling your
customer inquiries faster, and more efficiently, but to include the
capability to immediately FAX a document from the image system places
customer service on a higher level.
INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS: FaxRouter/2 provides the inbound
and outbound integration of a facsimile solution into the image
environment. This allows users of the image system to receive and
send facsimiles directly from their image workstations, eliminating
the time required to print and manually FAX the document.
IMPROVED WORKER PRODUCTIVITY: ImagePlus users spend less time
printing and FAXing and more time performing work tasks with the
integration of FaxRouter/2, ImagePlus VisualInfo and ImagePlus
MVS/ESA.
APPLICATION DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY: FaxRouter/2 provides a
high-level set of APIs which enable FAX integration into customer's
existing business processes. The APIs provided can reduce the time
and effort required for integration. Both server and client API's
are provided which allow integration with LAN based applications as
well as host based applications. FaxRouter/2 utilizes these APIs to
provide turnkey integration with ImagePlus VisualInfo.
With the FaxRouter/2 ImagePlus MVS/ESA Integration Feature,
FaxRouter/2 also utilizes these APIs to provide turnkey integration
with ImagePlus Folder Application Facility. Additional APIs are
provided with the feature for customers that have built their own
front-end image application. These APIs are supported in the CICS
and IMS environments.
DATA INTEGRITY IMPROVEMENTS: Integration with ImagePlus VisualInfo
and ImagePlus MVS/ESA eliminates the requirement for printing the
image system document and manually FAXing it to a customer. Since
all documents are maintained as electronic images and never touched
by human hands, the documents are not lost when retries are required.
An audit trail of all documents received or sent is maintained by
FaxRouter/2.
STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE-INDUSTRY STANDARDS: Received facsimiles are
stored as CCITT Group 4 compress images and placed in a MODCA
wrapper. These documents follow all the IBM MODCA IS1 and IS2
standards in compliance with the ImagePlus architecture.
