BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0 links the advantages of advanced document
management of ImagePlus with the power of other applications running
on the OS/2 desktop. Businesses can now have all their information
readily available in electronic form right from the workstation
desktop. IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0 is more than a system for
converting paper documents into electronic forms. IBM ImagePlus/2
Version 2.0 brings improved efficiencies and document availability to
everyday business activities and vital business documents.
BUSINESS PROCESS RE-ENGINEERING
IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0 brings an end to the paper shuffle. No
longer are there overflowing workbaskets, or desks piled high with
paper. IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0 replaces all the paper shuffling
with a simple to use electronic workbasket.
Through the use of electronic storage and routing of vital
documents and day-to-day documents, IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0
improves any business' efforts to re-engineer their current processes
by eliminating the paper bottleneck. Users can route any document on
their desktop, or stored within the library server, to another
workbasket defined within the system. No more time is wasted waiting
for a document to go from one desk to another. IBM ImagePlus/2
Version 2.0 provides near instantaneous routing of work from
out-basket to the next in-basket. Down time waiting for documents is
virtually eliminated; productivity and responsiveness to customer
requests are dramatically improved.
IMPROVED DOCUMENT AVAILABILITY
While you already know that ImagePlus can eliminate the need for file
cabinets full of paper and off-site storage of paper documents, the
really good news is that IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0 supports storing
more than just electronically-scanned paper documents. Now
electronic business documents created on your desktop -- documents
like spreadsheets or word processing documents -- can be stored in
IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0. By storing your business documents
within one central library, availability of these documents is
improved to everyone with access. Through the use of wildcard
searches, any document stored with IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0 can be
easily retrieved faster than traditional retrieval of paper
documents.
PRODUCT POSITIONING OF IMAGEPLUS FAMILY
The ImagePlus family includes products for the OS/2, MVS/ESA (TM) and
OS/400 (R) platforms.
The products are:
o IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo (for OS/2 and MVS/ESA)
o IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 2.0
o IBM ImagePlus Workfolder Application Facility/400 (WAF)
o IBM ImagePlus MVS/ESA Folder Application Facility (IPFAF)
IBM IMAGEPLUS VISUALINFO FOR OS/2
Select IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 when your organization,
large or small, has chosen the client/server model for implementing
information systems business solutions. Customers may choose to
start with a LAN implementation in one or more departments. The
implementation can then be scaled up to span the organization.
A single shared Library Server can support multiple OS/2 or
MVS/ESA based Object Servers. The Library Server can be OS/2 or
MVS/ESA based.
IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 addresses operational image
applications typically used by administrative workers. These
applications often require document driven workflow and queue
management. The Client Application component of the IBM ImagePlus
VisualInfo for OS/2 Client can meet this need. In addition, the
organization can choose to implement IBM FlowMark for OS/2 for more
advanced work process management.
Operational image can also be tightly integrated with
line-of-business (LOB) applications. The rich set of APIs in the IBM
ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 Client facilitate this approach and
enable image enhanced LOB applications to be built.
IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 can also address knowledge
worker needs as its client is workstation based and co-resident with
knowledge worker tools such as spreadsheet and word-processing
packages. IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2's ability to capture,
index, store, and display multiple document/data types makes it ideal
for this class of users.
IMAGE AND RECORDS MANAGEMENT (IRM)
IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 is a replacement offering for IRM.
Utilities and documentation are provided to facilitate the migration
to IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2. Objects stored by IRM will not
have to move. The IRM Servers are withdrawn from Marketing, however,
IRM Client Services/2 remains available (refer to Software
Announcement 294-065, dated February 15, 1994).
IBM IMAGEPLUS/2 VERSION 2.0
IP/2 Version 2.0, designed for small organizations is an appropriate
choice when all the users can be on a single LAN. It has a
simplified store/retrieve user interface to it's application. The
application is suitable for immediate, "out-of-the-box" use in a
variety of industries. Customers should consider IP/2 Version 2.0 if
all users and their stored documents can be accommodated on a single
LAN, and, there are no plans to grow beyond a single LAN.
The IBM ImagePlus Application Facility component of IBM
ImagePlus/2, was developed for IBM by the Eastman Kodak Company.
Customers with IBM ImagePlus/2 Version 1 installed who wish to
expand with IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 can take advantage of
utilities and documentation to simplify the transition to IBM
ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2. The utilities will migrate the
indices. Objects stored by ImagePlus/2 Version 1 will not have to
move.
IPFAF AND WAF
Organizations with MVS/ESA CICS (TM) and IMS, or OS/400 applications
often want to add image capability while exploiting their existing
information technology investments and infrastructure. The IPFAF for
MVS/ESA and WAF for OS/400 offerings typically address production
oriented, higher volume operational image opportunities. Both WAF
and IPFAF provide batch facilities for high-speed capture and batch
input to support high-volume requirements.
IPFAF and WAF provide an application for document driven
workflow and folder management as well as an set of APIs for the
image enablement of LOB applications.
Select WAF for applications that are OS/400 based. The choice
of WAF enables customers to leverage their OS/400 skills,
infrastructure and installed application base. WAF is especially
appropriate when sophisticated advanced work management is needed.
WAF in concert with OS/400 provides a very competitive imaging
environment as it is easy to use, operate, and support.
Select IPFAF to image enable high volume MVS/ESA CICS and IMS
applications. IPFAF customers will be able to add IBM ImagePlus
VisualInfo for OS/2 to their operating environment to implement new
applications where the focus is on OS/2-based applications in the
client/server model. To facilitate coexistence with and migration to
IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2, utilities are provided to allow
all or part of the IPFAF indices to be loaded into the IBM ImagePlus
VisualInfo for OS/2 Library Servers. This will allow IBM ImagePlus
VisualInfo for OS/2 applications access to documents that were stored
by IPFAF. Once again, stored documents do not have to be moved.
SUMMARY
New customers will be able to choose an image offering according to
their application needs and information technology strategies.
Installed customers also have choices. They can expand their
installed platforms, migrate to IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2, or
add IBM ImagePlus VisualInfo for OS/2 for new applications.
