  42. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  43.                   The OS/2 2.1 Special Edition for use with Windows Version 3.1
  44.            is the competitive retail package of choice for current users of
  45.            Microsoft Windows Version 3.1.  OS/2 for Windows provides all the
  46.            benefits of OS/2 2.1 -- industry-standard device support, compliance
  47.            with industry standards, enhanced standing as a premier client, and
  48.            enhanced support for OS/2, DOS, and allows your previously installed
  49.            copy of Windows 3.1 to run with OS/2.  All these features are
  50.            delivered on top of a stable, mature platform that has been "fit and
  51.            finished" over time.  In addition, the OS/2 2.1 Special Edition is an
  52.            extremely attractive offering for Personal Computer Manufacturers who
  53.            currently are pre-installing DOS 5.x or higher and Windows
  54.            Version 3.1.
  55.                   This OS/2 for Windows requires Windows 3.1 to be previously
  56.            installed on the hard disk.  This OS/2 for Windows allows your
  57.            previously installed Windows product to run under OS/2 2.1.  During
  58.            the installation of OS/2 2.1 for use with Windows Version 3.1 the
  59.            user need only choose the Windows selection from the install panel.
  60.            This will enable Windows programs to run under OS/2 2.1.  All
  61.            customizations previously made for Windows 3.1 are preserved.
  62.                   As with the OS/2 2.1 product, the OS/2 2.1 Special Edition
  63.            runs DOS programs in DOS sessions under OS/2.  The multiple and dual
  64.            boot capabilities are unchanged from the OS/2 2.1 product, and DOS
  65.            programs requiring a specific version of DOS can still be run under
  66.            native DOS.  IBM, Microsoft, or DR DOS 5.x or higher are required on
  67.            the target system only for the installation of Windows Version 3.1.
  68.            DOS disk utilities are subject to the same limitations as under the
  69.            OS/2 2.1 product.
  70.                   DASD requirements are the same as for OS/2 2.1.  (An
  71.            additional 2MB of disk space is needed for installation of Windows
  72.            Version 3.1 under DOS).  Memory and CPU requirements are the same as
  73.            for OS/2 2.1.  The OS/2 printer and video drivers are identical to
  74.            those included in the OS/2 2.1 product.
  75.                   IBM's recently-announced 256-color video driver for the S3
  76.            chip set from S3 Corporation is compatible and will be included in
  77.            the package as a separate diskette.  The S3 chipset is used on a
  78.            variety of leading display adapters including Actix, Diamond, Orchid
  79.            Fahrenheit, Metheus, and Video 7.  The S3 video driver is designed to
  80.            provide OS/2  users with seamless support for accelerated video
  81.            graphics and advanced color resolution in a proven and reliable
  82.            operating environment.
  83.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION -- APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY
  84.            OS/2 2.1 protects the customers investment in existing DOS and
  85.            Windows applications by providing the capability for them to run
  86.            simultaneously and seamlessly with OS/2 16- and 32-bit applications
  87.            on the same display.  The customer can continue to run his existing
  88.            applications while having the ability to use advanced 32-bit
  89.            OS/2 applications.
  90.            GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY ENABLED
  91.            OS/2 2.1 has been enhanced to support Mobile computers, Pen based
  92.            systems and multimedia applications, the latest industry directions.

  94.            o   OS/2 2.1 Special Edition for use with Windows Version 3.1 is the
  95.                competitive retail package for current users of Windows
  96.                Version 3.1.

  98.                offered to PCMs who currently are pre-installing DOS 5.x or 6.x
  99.                and Windows Version 3.1, providing the opportunity to install
  100.                OS/2 for Windows.
  101.            HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  102.            o   DASD requirements are the same as for OS/2 2.1 (with an
  103.                additional 2MB of disk space needed for DOS).
  104.            o   Memory requirements are the same as for OS/2 2.1.
  105.            o   CPU requirements are the same as for OS/2 2.1.

  114.            SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
  115.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  The minimum hardware configuration for
  116.            OS/2 2.1 is as follows:
  117.                   IBM PS/2 (R), IBM Industrial Computer, IBM PS/1 (R), IBM
  118.            PS/ValuePoint (TM) or selected non-IBM personal computer with a
  119.            386-SX or compatible or higher processor, 4MB system memory and a
  120.            hard disk with 20 to 40MB free space available to the operating
  121.            system depending upon installation options selected.  IBM recommends
  122.            6MB or greater system memory and an 80MB or greater hard disk for
  123.            many application scenarios.
  124.                   In addition OS/2 2.1 supports a broad range of hard disks,
  125.            diskette drives, adapter and display combinations, pointing devices,
  126.            printers, CD-ROM drives, optical drives and portable computers.

  132.            3.1 supports only the following national language versions of Windows
