  9. ABSTRACT          NetFinity (TM) is a highly flexible, low-cost tool to help
  10.            users with hardware and general systems management functions.  It is
  11.            designed to manage systems based on Intel (1) Architecture for 386SX
  12.            equivalent, or higher, personal computers.  NetFinity complements
  13.            LMU/2 and LAN NetView (R).  NetFinity is
  14.            configuration/installation/distribution (CID) enabled, permitting
  15.            remote installation.
  16.                   NetFinity is comprised of two products:
  17.            o   NetFinity Services
  18.            o   NetFinity Manager (includes NetFinity Services -- one license and
  19.                documentation).
  20.                   NetFinity Services provides the local user and the NetFinity
  21.            Manager the following services:
  22.            o   Hardware and software configuration details
  23.            o   Resource monitoring and alerting
  24.            o   Security management
  25.            o   Customizable system profile
  26.            o   System partition access (PS/2 (R) systems only) for systems with
  27.                partitions
  28.            o   ECC configuration (PS/2 with ECC memory systems).
  29.                   NetFinity Manager installed with NetFinity Services provides
  30.            the following additional services:
  31.            o   Bi-directional file transfer
  32.            o   Remote screen view (snap shots)
  33.            o   Remote session
  34.            o   System heart-beat monitoring

  36.            o   Pass-through system management

  39.                   The object-oriented design of NetFinity allows new services
  40.            and protocol support to be added without any impact to the base
  41.            product.

  43.            server software.  Only one or more of the supported protocols is

  87.            SYSTEM MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS
  88.            IBM NetFinity provides local and remote system management functions
  89.            with the emphasis on hardware.  The hardware management functions
  90.            are:
  91.            o   Exploitation of system partitions (PS/2 systems)
  92.            o   Exploitation of C2 security
  93.            o   Exploitation of Micro Channel (R), EISA and PCMCIA buses
  94.            o   ECC configuration management (PS/2 systems with ECC memory)

  118.            MANAGING MULTIPLE SYSTEMS:  NetFinity provides systems management
  119.            capability for workstations and servers.  The product provides
  120.            complete management capability for all systems and offers additional
  121.            support for systems with special features such as ECC memory, PCMCIA
  122.            devices, RAID subsystems and more.
  123.            GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- CENTRALIZED CONTROL IMPROVEMENTS
  124.            A system administrator using NetFinity has the ability to perform key
  125.            management functions on remote workstations.  The programs have
  126.            built-in features to expand with the growth of a customer's network
  127.            while maintaining the centralized controls.
  128.            UPGRADEABILITY IMPROVEMENTS:  The architecture of NetFinity is
  129.            conducive to expansion with new add-on services as system management
  130.            needs are identified.
  131.            PRODUCT POSITIONING
  132.            NetFinity is positioned as a low-cost, highly flexible, hardware
  133.            management program with general system management functions.
  134.            NetFinity provides a full set of easy-to-use hardware management
  135.            services.  The management services make it attractive to a broad
  136.            range of LAN environments.  NetFinity is primarily an attended
  137.            solution to support LAN administrators to view, initiate and exploit
  138.            management services.
  139.                   The NetFinity product set complements and enhances both LAN
  140.            NetView and LMU/2.  NetFinity can be used with LAN NetView to augment
  141.            its applications with advanced hardware management functions.  In
  142.            addition, NetFinity can be used in conjunction with LMU/2 as a
  143.            complementary product that provides hardware management services in
  144.            addition to features and functions of LMU/2.
  145.            STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
  146.            IBM intends to support Windows (2) 3.1, NetWare (3) 3.11 and NetWare
  147.            4.0 in a subsequent release of the NetFinity Services product.  IBM
  148.            also intends to support Windows 3.1 in a subsequent release of the
  149.            NetFinity Manager product.  In addition, IBM intends to provide
  150.            preventive failure analysis function in the NetFinity product for
  151.            hard disks on local and network systems.

  163.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  NetFinity operates on a system built with a

  165.            following system resources are required:

  167.            o   6MB of hard disk memory for NetFinity Manager.
