  6. TITLE      IBM LAN SERVER ULTIMEDIA -- MULTIMEDIA FOR OS/2, DOS AND WINDOWS
  7.            CLIENTS

  9. ABSTRACT   IBM LAN Server Ultimedia (R) Version 1.0 extends the distributed
  10.            multimedia capabilities of IBM OS/2 (R) LAN Server 3.0 -- Advanced,
  11.            by setting up a controlled environment to ensure uncompromised
  12.            playout of audio/video application components even with congestion on
  13.            the LAN.  The requisite quality of service needed for uncompromised
  14.            playout of sound, voice and video is what distinguishes this product
  15.            from most other similar products.
  16.            IBM LAN Server Ultimedia (R) Version 1.0 can be added to existing
  17.            token-ring or Ethernet LANs with data applications in a
  18.            non-disruptive manner.  The product design allows simultaneous use of
  19.            data and multimedia applications.
  20.            IBM LAN Server Ultimedia (R) Version 1.0 takes advantage of the
  21.            token-ring LAN Priority Architecture to reserve bandwidth in the
  22.            network, which, with resource reservations in the file system and
  23.            disks, automatically provides the required quality of service for
  24.            multimedia even when data applications are running.  Ethernet users
  25.            can reap many of the benefits of the product but differences in the
  26.            architecture require the user to be more careful to ensure that
  27.            adequate capacity exists in the network resources.
  28.            With multimedia application independence, all applications can run.
  29.            As examples, applications based on Ultimotion, DVI (1), INDEO (1),
  30.            RIFF-WAV and SoundBlaster (2) Voice have been tested successfully.
  31.            By providing a very high level of multimedia playback support, users
  32.            can engage in applications such as "news-on-demand", kiosk, new
  33.            personnel training, enhanced mail and spreadsheet, computer-assisted
  34.            education, and many more.  Multimedia is generally considered to be a
  35.            significant assist to personal communications, leading to enhanced
  36.            human performance in a variety of activities.
  37.                   Other features of the product include:
  38.            o   Runs stand-alone applications using Multimedia Presentation
  39.                Manager/2 (TM) (MMPM/2) or AVK
  40.            o   Clients may be OS/2, DOS, or Windows (3)
  41.            o   Up to 40 video sessions (plus data applications) from a single
  42.                server
  43.            o   Tuning facilities to optimize performance.
  44.            IBM LAN Server Ultimedia Version 1.0 is a separate program, another
  45.            in IBM's range of multimedia enabling packages.  Its announcement is
  46.            consistent with IBM's declared intent to provide support for all
  47.            major platforms -- in this case the IBM OS/2 LAN Server -- so that
  48.            all users can benefit from the enormous potential of multimedia
  49.            impact.

  70. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  71.            UNCOMPROMISED DISTRIBUTION OF MULTIMEDIA APPLICATIONS ACROSS THE LAN
  72.            Multimedia applications require a large commitment of resources at
  73.            the file, disk access and network levels to deliver their
  74.            time-sensitive media streams to the client to produce a high quality
  75.            image to the end user.  LAN Server Ultimedia provides a reservation
  76.            system to ensure the requisite quality of service is attained.
  77.            ENHANCED OPERATIONS
  78.            IBM LAN Server Ultimedia enables distributed multimedia applications
  79.            to run across a LAN in an acceptable manner, which, in turn, opens
  80.            opportunities:
  81.            o   Multimedia enhances communications throughout an organization,
  82.                which results in better products, shorter cycles and lower costs.
  83.            o   Multimedia enhances the quality of reports and presentations by
  84.                adding audio/video capability for additional effect.
  85.            o   The ability to store multimedia examples of how to service a
  86.                product results in better service to the customer.
  87.            o   Multimedia information carries more impact and leads to better
  88.                decision-making internally, and better product representation to
  89.                external customers.
  90.                   Ethernet LANs are also supported and most of the
  91.            characteristics described above apply.  However, because of the
  92.            differences in the LAN architectures, some reduction in the
  93.            anticipated number of audio/video sessions may be necessary, to
  94.            achieve an acceptable level in their quality.
  95.            GROWTH ENABLEMENT AND INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  96.            Multimedia applications can be added to an existing token-ring LAN
  97.            with existing data applications, by using the priority mechanism of
  98.            the token ring to ensure that the multimedia ones get priority and
  99.            run correctly at the client.  This has the following advantages:
  100.            o   Existing data applications run without modification
  101.            o   Multimedia and data applications run concurrently
  102.            o   Existing stand-alone multimedia applications can be transferred
  103.                to the server and played back to the clients, usually without
  104.                modification
  105.            o   Enterprise data at the server can be upgraded to multimedia and
  106.                continue to be accessed by client users.
  107.                   Ethernet LANs may also participate in these types of
  108.            activities; however, because of the difference in architecture
  109.            compared to a token ring, multimedia cannot automatically be given
  110.            priority and it is up to the user to ensure that the combined data
  111.            and multimedia activity will provide adequate capacity in the network
  112.            resources to allow acceptable multimedia performance.

  125. TECHINFO   TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  126.            SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
  127.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  IBM LAN Server Ultimedia Version 1.0 runs on a
  128.            server PC  and also provides minor modifications to each client.  The
  129.            minimum operating environment for multimedia applications to be
  130.            played back from the server to clients on the LAN, is as follows.
  131.            Note that this minimum network configuration will be restricted in
  132.            the number of simultaneous audio/video streams playable across the
  133.            LAN.
  134.                   Server:
  135.            o   IBM Intel 386-based PS/2 (R) (or IBM approved OEM equivalent)
  136.            o   16MB Memory
  137.            o   400MB disk drive
  138.            o   IBM LANStreamer (TM) MC 32 Adapter (or equivalent), or
  139.            o   Appropriate alternative LAN Adapter*.
  140.                   LAN:
  141.            o   Token ring (4Mb)
  142.            o   Ethernet.
  143.                   Client:
  144.            o   IBM Intel 386-based PS/2 (or IBM approved OEM equivalent)
  145.            o   Requisite display, and audio/video support for multimedia
  146.                applications
  147.            *  For uncompromised playout of multimedia files at the clients,
  148.               users need a token-ring LAN, plus either a server with a
  149.               LANStreamer MC 32 adapter or a dedicated server, which can then
  150.               use alternatively an IBM Token-Ring Network Busmaster Server
  151.               Adapter/A or an IBM Token-Ring Network 16/4 Adapter/A.
  152.            NOTE: All multimedia clients must be on the same segment as the
  153.            server (although bridges may be used to non-multimedia clients) and
  154.            there cannot be more than one multimedia server on the LAN.
  155.                   The minimum requirements are given above, but a more typical
  156.            server configuration would be:
  157.            o   A 486 50MHz PS/2 with 32MB memory and 2 x 2GB disks each with a
  158.                dedicated controller for multimedia applications attached to 3 x
  159.                16Mb token rings each with a LANStreamer MC 32 Adapter.
  160.                   Depending on the other factors involved (refer to PERFORMANCE
  161.            CONSIDERATIONS section), this configuration should be able to support
  162.            up to 25-30 video media streams.
  163.                   Finally, to reach the highest number of simultaneous streams
  164.            tested to date (40 at 1.2Mb/sec) the above configuration would be
  165.            extended to four disks with individual controllers, with 4 x 16Mb
  166.            token-ring LANs each with a LANStreamer MC 32 Adapter and using OS/2
  167.            clients.
  168.            PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS:  IBM LAN Server Ultimedia Version 1.0 is
  169.            designed to operate with the IBM LAN Server -- Advanced Version 3.0
  170.            updated with Service Pack IP07001, working with OS/2 2.0 with Service
  171.            Pack 2 or OS/2 2.1 (or higher).
  172.                   Client support requires:
  173.            o   OS/2 LAN Requester (feature of LAN Server Version 3.0), OS/2 2.0
  174.                (or later) plus client support from IBM LAN Server Ultimedia
  175.                Version 1.0; or
  176.            o   DOS LAN Requester (feature of LAN Server Version 3.0) plus DOS
  177.                5.0 (or later) plus client support from IBM LAN Server Ultimedia
  178.                Version 1.0; or
  179.            o   Windows DOS LAN Requester (feature of LAN Server Version 3.0),
  180.                plus Windows 3.1 (or later) plus one of the operating systems
  181.                above plus client support from IBM LAN Server Ultimedia Version
  182.                1.0.
  183.            LIMITATIONS:  The maximum number of simultaneous AVI/DVI video
  184.            sessions (at 1.2Mb/sec) currently tested using a single server is 40.
  185.                   Client workstations must be attached on the same LAN segment
  186.            as the server (that is, no bridges or routers between multimedia
  187.            clients and the server).
  188.                   When multimedia and data applications are performed in a
  189.            token-ring environment, where higher priority for multimedia has been
  190.            allocated, the data applications have lower priority and, as a
  191.            consequence, their performance will be reduced.
  192.                   IBM LAN Server Ultimedia Version 1.0 requires that the
  193.            NDIS-compliant NetBIOS stack be installed on DOS clients.  For
  194.            example, LAN Manager and Windows for Workgroups clients are not
  195.            supported.
  196.                   Macintosh (4) clients are supported by the IBM OS/2 LAN Server
  197.            via the OS/2 LAN Server for Macintosh product, and as such can access
  198.            multimedia files on the server and play them back.  However, none of
  199.            the reservation and control facilities of LS Ultimedia are available
  200.            in this environment, so that Macintosh users receive no benefit from
  201.            its use.

  203.            PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  The number of multimedia sessions
  204.            simultaneously supported will vary considerably depending on the
  205.            following factors:
  206.            o   Number and type of multimedia streams simultaneously played back
  207.                across the LAN
  208.            o   Size and power of the server system
  209.            o   Size and number of drives of the server disk array
  210.            o   Number and type of server disk controllers
  211.            o   Type and speed of the LAN
  212.            o   Type of server LAN Adapter
  213.            o   Operating system on the client.
  214.            In addition, the performance of data applications will be affected by
  215.            the multimedia traffic.
  216.                   Performance considerations are described in the publication
  217.            IBM LAN SERVER ULTIMEDIA VERSION 1.0 -- INSTALLATION AND
  218.            CONFIGURATION GUIDE (S96F-8756).
  219.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  220.            CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  The customer is responsible for setting
  221.            up the network to achieve the desired results for multimedia and data
  222.            applications.  This consists of ensuring that appropriate
  223.            configurations of hardware and software are selected for server and
  224.            clients, and that the various parameters that can be adjusted are set
  225.            at appropriate levels to allow the desired results to be obtained.

  237.            SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
  238.                   The IBM LAN Server Ultimedia uses the security and
  239.            auditability features of the IBM OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0 --
  240.            Advanced.
  241.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
  242.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
  243.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  244.            facilities.
