  8. ABSTRACT          The Ultimedia (R) Video IN/2 Version 1.0 provides support for
  9.            capturing and editing digital motion video.
  10.                   The Ultimedia Video IN/2 supports a number of different
  11.            digital motion compression/decompression algorithms.  The video
  12.            objects created with the Ultimedia Video IN/2 can be played back
  13.            using OS/2 (R) 2.1.  Compression algorithms supported in Version 1.0
  14.            are Indeo (1) and Ultimotion (TM) using the audio/video interleaved
  15.            (AVI) file format.  The video can be played back using the
  16.            software-only digital video player delivered with the enhanced
  17.            multimedia functions provided in OS/2 2.1.

  40. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  41.            SOFTWARE MOTION VIDEO CAPTURE
  42.            Capture of digital motion video is accomplished by:
  43.            o   Software implemented digital video Media Control Driver (MCD)
  44.            o   Works in conjunction with one of several hardware capture
  45.                adapters
  46.                NOTE: Refer to the Video Capture Cards matrix in the PLANNING
  47.                INFORMATION section for further details.
  48.            o   Uses either Indeo or Ultimotion compression algorithms
  49.            o   Supports a wide range of frame rates and frame sizes
  50.            o   Capture is in real-time or from frame accurate devices.
  51.            BUSINESS SOLUTIONS AND USER PRODUCTIVITY
  52.            Software Motion Video enables greater user productivity at reduced
  53.            cost in existing and new applications by providing enhanced specific
  54.            communication through the use of digitized motion video.  One example
  55.            of such an application is online, computer-based training, where
  56.            video can enhance its effectiveness.  By using Software Motion Video,
  57.            the training can be delivered to a wide range of personal computers,
  58.            without special video-playback hardware.
  59.                   The course content can be developed and digitized in-house, as
  60.            new products and process are brought into being.  Further, as changes
  61.            are made, new material can be incorporated quickly.  Delivery from
  62.            updated host/server databases can be made directly to clients on the
  63.            desktop or shop floor.  Video IN works seamlessly with the Ultimedia
  64.            Builder/2 (41G2937), Ultimedia Perfect Image/2 (41G6294), and
  65.            Ultimedia Workplace/2 (41G2938) to create multimedia presentations
  66.            and applications.
  67.            OPEN ENTERPRISE:  The application level code contained in the
  68.            Ultimedia Video IN is written in the C language.
  69.                   The nature of the Media Control Interface provides a
  70.            consistent interface at the programmer level.
  71.                   Transparent access to data is provided through the AVI file
  72.            format and cross-platform implementation of the video codec
  73.            interface.

  78.            Ultimedia Video IN/2 provides the capture capability and new MMPM/2
  79.            APIs for developing nonlinear editors.  Video IN allows developers
  80.            and end-users to take advantage of the conducive multimedia
  81.            environment that comes with OS/2 2.1.

  96. TECHINFO   TECHNICAL INFORMATION
  97.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS
  98.            Ultimedia Video IN/2 requires the minimum hardware configuration for
  99.            OS/2 2.1 with additions in processor speed, system memory, hard disk
  100.            and devices necessary to support multimedia software motion video
  101.            capture applications.
  102.                   OS/2 2.1 minimum requirements include:
  103.            o   PS/2 (R)
  104.            o   IBM Industrial Computer
  105.            o   ValuePoint (TM)
  106.            o   PS/1 (R)
  107.            o   Selected non-IBM personal computers with a 386-SX compatible or
  108.                higher processor
  109.            o   4MB system memory
  110.            o   20 to 40MB of hard disk space available to the operating system,
  111.                depending upon installation options selected.
  112.                   IBM recommends 6MB or greater system memory and an 80MB or
  113.            greater hard disk for most application scenarios.  For Double Byte
  114.            Character Set (DBCS), a PS/55 and OS/2 2.1J are required.
  115.                   Ultimedia Video IN/2 additional requirements:
  116.            o   A 486 system is the recommended minimum for real-time recording
  117.            o   12MB system memory for the capture environment is recommended
  118.            o   Hard disk +10MB
  119.                       NOTE:  Additional hard disk space is required to save
  120.                captured movies, generally at a rate of 10MB/minute
  121.            o   One of the following Audio Capture Adapters

  147.            SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
  148.            Ultimedia Video IN/2 Version 1.0 requires that OS/2 2.1 (and
  149.            MMPM/2 1.1) be installed on the personal computer.
  150.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  151.            ULTIMEDIA VIDEO IN/2
  152.            The following functions are available in the Video IN product:
  153.            o   Software Motion Video Capture
  154.                       Capture is accomplished by a digital video Media Control
  155.                Driver (MCD) working in conjunction with hardware video capture
  156.                adapters and allows support for differing data compression types
  157.                and formats.  The digitizing and compression of motion video
  158.                using Indeo or Ultimotion software technology enables video to be
  159.                treated like any other multimedia data object.  Further the Indeo
  160.                and Ultimotion AVI files created are used in the software only
  161.                motion video playback.  Ultimotion offers the highest quality
  162.                playback without hardware.  The video recorder provides end-user
  163.                access to these functions and editing operations.
  164.                       Digital video can be combined with digital audio and still
  165.                images and stored on standard peripheral devices such as CD-ROM
  166.                drives and hard disks.  The video capture/compression methods
  167.                provided are symmetric, which is capture in real time (camcorder,
  168.                VCR), and asymmetric, which is capture from frame accurate
  169.                devices (laser disc).  Recording from existing movie files is
  170.                also supported.  OS/2 bitmaps can also be created from supported
  171.                capture adapters using the SMV recorder.
  172.            o   Video Recorder Application
  173.                       Invokes and controls the capture/recorder software for
  174.                recording digital motion video.  Also provides editing and review
  175.                playback capabilities.
  176.            o   Utility for manipulating AVI files (can be used to split and
  177.                merge audio tracks from movies, and view and change AVI file
  178.                information)
  179.            o   Capture Adapter Device Drivers

  258.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.  Unless a later
  259.            date is specified, orders entered prior to the planned availability
  260.            date will be assigned a schedule date of December 24, 1993.  Shipment
  261.            of backlogged orders will commence on the availability date.  Orders
  262.            entered after the planned availability date will be scheduled for
  263.            shipment on the Friday following the week of order entry or as soon

  283.                   The available order types are as follows:
  284.            o   Program Package -- program diskette with documentation.
  285.            o   Additional License Copies -- authorization  for the customer who
  286.                has a program package to make a single copy of the program
  287.                diskette and documentation.  There are two ways to receive
  288.                authorization to copy.  Receipt of the invoice authorizes the
  289.                customer to make the Additional License Copy.  The ICA must be in
  290.                effect.  The customer also has the option of ordering a Proof of
  291.                Additional License certificate.  In which case, the ICA is not
  292.                required.
  293.            IBM EDUCATION FULFILLMENT CENTER:  The announced program is eligible
  294.            to be ordered through the IBM Education Fulfillment Center.  Note
