o Software implemented digital video Media Control Driver (MCD)
o Works in conjunction with one of several hardware capture
adapters
NOTE: Refer to the Video Capture Cards matrix in the PLANNING
INFORMATION section for further details.
o Uses either Indeo or Ultimotion compression algorithms

o Capture is in real-time or from frame accurate devices.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS AND USER PRODUCTIVITY
Software Motion Video enables greater user productivity at reduced
cost in existing and new applications by providing enhanced specific
communication through the use of digitized motion video. One example
of such an application is online, computer-based training, where
video can enhance its effectiveness. By using Software Motion Video,
the training can be delivered to a wide range of personal computers,
without special video-playback hardware.
The course content can be developed and digitized in-house, as
new products and process are brought into being. Further, as changes
are made, new material can be incorporated quickly. Delivery from
updated host/server databases can be made directly to clients on the
desktop or shop floor. Video IN works seamlessly with the Ultimedia
Builder/2 (41G2937), Ultimedia Perfect Image/2 (41G6294), and
Ultimedia Workplace/2 (41G2938) to create multimedia presentations
and applications.
OPEN ENTERPRISE: The application level code contained in the
Ultimedia Video IN is written in the C language.
The nature of the Media Control Interface provides a
consistent interface at the programmer level.
Transparent access to data is provided through the AVI file
format and cross-platform implementation of the video codec
interface.
All Video IN screen presentations conform to CUA (TM)
standards.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
Ultimedia Video IN/2 provides the capture capability and new MMPM/2
APIs for developing nonlinear editors. Video IN allows developers
and end-users to take advantage of the conducive multimedia
environment that comes with OS/2 2.1.
CUSTINFO PUBLICATIONS
The ULTIMEDIA VIDEO IN/2 PROGRAMMING REFERENCE (82G4225) may
be ordered by calling 800-IBM-PCTB. The reference contains all of
the MMPM/2 1.1 APIs and the latest digital video extensions, DGV
string commands and guide information for the Video IN sample
programs.

SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
Ultimedia Video IN/2 Version 1.0 requires that OS/2 2.1 (and
MMPM/2 1.1) be installed on the personal computer.
PLANNING INFORMATION
ULTIMEDIA VIDEO IN/2
The following functions are available in the Video IN product:
o Software Motion Video Capture
Capture is accomplished by a digital video Media Control
Driver (MCD) working in conjunction with hardware video capture
adapters and allows support for differing data compression types
and formats. The digitizing and compression of motion video
using Indeo or Ultimotion software technology enables video to be
treated like any other multimedia data object. Further the Indeo
and Ultimotion AVI files created are used in the software only
motion video playback. Ultimotion offers the highest quality
playback without hardware. The video recorder provides end-user
access to these functions and editing operations.
Digital video can be combined with digital audio and still
images and stored on standard peripheral devices such as CD-ROM
drives and hard disks. The video capture/compression methods
provided are symmetric, which is capture in real time (camcorder,
VCR), and asymmetric, which is capture from frame accurate
devices (laser disc). Recording from existing movie files is
also supported. OS/2 bitmaps can also be created from supported
capture adapters using the SMV recorder.
o Video Recorder Application
Invokes and controls the capture/recorder software for
recording digital motion video. Also provides editing and review
playback capabilities.
o Utility for manipulating AVI files (can be used to split and
merge audio tracks from movies, and view and change AVI file
information)
o Capture Adapter Device Drivers
The matrix below provides information on all the current
Capture Adapters Cards supported.
