  7. ABSTRACT          ReDiscovery/2 helps the user identify usable and reusable
  8.            parts and retrieve them for analysis or future use.
  9.                   ReDiscovery/2 allows a user to create catalogs from
  10.            workstation or local area network (LAN) files and selected libraries,
  11.            add additional information about the part, search for the part based
  12.            on its content or descriptive information, and retrieve the part from
  13.            the library.  ReDiscovery/2 uses ReDiscovery/MVS to provide an
  14.            interface to parts in MVS data sets and selected MVS libraries.  To
  15.            use ReDiscovery/2 on the MVS platform, see IBM Software Announcement
  16.            293-606, dated October 12, 1993.
  17.                   Studies indicate that being able to find and reuse design and
  18.            code has a major positive impact on development productivity,
  19.            quality, and time required to deliver new applications.  The benefits
  20.            vary with the maturity of the organization's reuse program, and can
  21.            be expected to increase as the organization's reusable parts
  22.            increase.
  23.                   The first customer shipment of ReDiscovery/2 and
  24.            ReDiscovery/MVS will be by November 22, 1993 to an already selected
  25.            set of customers.  These customers will participate in a program that
  26.            is designed to validate that IBM has achieved the quality objectives
  27.            for ReDiscovery/2 and ReDiscovery/MVS in a variety of production
  28.            environments.  When these customers confirm that IBM has achieved its
  29.            quality objectives, IBM will announce general availability and
  30.            ordering information in a general availability announcement letter.

  37.                   IBM ReDiscovery/2 and IBM ReDiscovery/MVS allow the

  59. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  60.                   The features available in ReDiscovery/2 can save application
  61.            programmers significant time by automating what would otherwise be a
  62.            manual process.  Reuse becomes attractive to programmers when search
  63.            and selection of items such as code components, test cases, design
  64.            models, and documentation are fast, easy, and complete.  Reusing code
  65.            is a faster way to create new applications than writing new code.
  66.            This savings can help improve programmer productivity, application
  67.            quality, and reduce the time it takes for a programmer to complete
  68.            the task, which can help to reduce the total backlog for the
  69.            customer.
  70.                   Customers should achieve value by reusing code which can
  71.            increase productivity and quality, and reduce elapsed time to
  72.            delivery of programs.  When customers choose to reuse larger
  73.            elements, such as business models or even functional models, even
  74.            greater percentages of improvement may be possible.
  75.            SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT -- APPLICATION DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY
  76.            ReDiscovery/2 helps application developers be more productive by
  77.            supporting a reuse environment.  ReDiscovery/2 allows users to
  78.            automatically build descriptions of reusable parts from multiple
  79.            disparate sources, add additional classification information, then
  80.            search these catalogs to locate needed parts for maintenance of
  81.            current applications or development of new applications.  Organizing
  82.            parts by classifying them into structures or by grouping them into
  83.            components, and then providing summary information about the
  84.            structure or component, allows a user to:
  85.            o   Search applications for needed parts
  86.            o   Determine what the component functions are
  87.            o   Research where and when the parts have been used or referenced
  88.                   ReDiscovery/2 provides the application developer with a tool
  89.            that will reduce, if not eliminate, manual searches for code that can
  90.            be used in new application generation.  The easy availability of
  91.            reusable code encourages application generation from available parts,
  92.            rather than writing all new code.  Coding time, testing time and
  93.            future maintenance time can be significantly reduced by using
  94.            existing, tested code.  A tool which automates the search process for
  95.            reusable parts makes a corporate reuse strategy feasible.

  97.            ReDiscovery/2 provides a means to create new applications faster than
  98.            writing new code, thereby potentially reducing application backlogs.

  113.            The following illustrates some of the ways that customers can derive
  114.            value by using ReDiscovery/2 and ReDiscovery/MVS.  Potential values
  115.            can include productivity gains, quality improvements, and reduction
  116.            of elapsed development time.
  117.            o   Reuse -- where an application development professional
  118.                (programmer, system analyst, AD manager) identifies usable or
  119.                reusable parts.
  120.                       The following are necessary to allow customers to reuse
  121.                parts:
  122.                -   A part is useful -- it does something its user needs
  123.                -   The user knows it exists (can find it)
  124.                -   The user can acquire it
  125.                -   The user knows how to use it
  126.                -   The user can combine it with other parts -- usually without
  127.                    having to modify it internally
  128.                -   Somebody will supply maintenance (unless the part is
  129.                    inexpensive)
  130.                -   There is a measurable net benefit to the user to use it.
  131.                       ReDiscovery/2 and ReDiscovery/MVS can help a user perform
  132.                reuse by answering basic premises in the above list, questions
  133.                such as "Is there a place to look for something?", "Does it
  134.                exist?", and "How do I get it"?.  ReDiscovery/2 provides a set of
  135.                metrics and reports to help quantify the value of the part.  To
  136.                effectively implement reuse, the customer must support an
  137.                organized approach to supply parts and to reuse parts.
  138.                -   Supply -- Cataloging reusable parts
  139.                           ReDiscovery/2 and ReDiscovery/MVS automatically
  140.                    capture information from existing parts sources and begin the
  141.                    organization process.  The user may use the default
  142.                    classification scheme (standards) or tailor a new one to
  143.                    complete the organization and description of the parts.
  144.                -   Reuse -- searching for and selecting parts
  145.                           The reusable parts catalog can be browsed in a variety
  146.                    of ways, including keyword search, structured search, and
  147.                    wild card search.  These methods, working on the
  148.                    classification scheme and the raw data, will identify
  149.                    reusable parts for the ReDiscovery/2 user.
  150.                           Once function and matching code have been located, an
  151.                    analysis can be performed to determine which is more cost
  152.                    effective:
  153.                    --  Using the located part as is
  154.                    --  Modifying a copy of the located part to enhance function
  155.                        (that is, redevelop)
  156.                    --  Code a new part using the identified function as a base.
  157.                           The Reuse Support Strategy is part of the overall goal
  158.                    to improve application developer productivity.  Reuse can
  159.                    affect a wide spectrum of application development activities
  160.                    and a wide variety of reusable components.

  162.            By comparing (benchmarking) how long researching the affected modules
  163.            takes manually versus with using ReDiscovery/2, costs for reducing
  164.            the understanding or migration time can be calculated.  This cost
  165.            reduction may be substantial.

  205.            LIMITATIONS:  The ReDiscovery/2 product runs only on a workstation,
  206.            and is not designed to be used on a server.
  207.            PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  Performance may be impacted if the
  208.            description catalog is placed on the server depending upon how the
  209.            server is configured.  See the ReDiscovery User's Guide for
  210.            assistance.

  215.                   ReDiscovery/2 and ReDiscovery/MVS use the security and
  216.            auditability features of the platform hardware and software.
  217.            Security for libraries is provided by the appropriate library
  218.            maintenance system.
  219.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
  220.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
  221.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  222.            facilities.
