  6. TITLE      IBM CMVC PRODUCTS VERSION 2.2 -- DB2/6000 AND OS/2 CLIENT
  7.  
  8. ABSTRACT          The IBM Configuration Management Version Control (CMVC)
  9.            product family is enhanced with the addition of support for
  10.            DATABASE 2 (TM) AIX/6000 (TM) Version 1 (DB2/6000 (TM)) (5765-172)
  11.            and the addition of a CMVC OS/2 (R) client.
  12.                   The IBM CMVC products provide application developers with
  13.            configuration management and change control or versioning that is
  14.            integrated with design and defect tracking for heterogeneous
  15.            environments.  Any CMVC Version 2 Release 2 server can support any of
  16.            the four different CMVC clients (AIX (R), Sun (1), HP (2), OS/2).
  17.                   New functions for Version 2 Release 2 include:
  18.            o   DB2/6000 support
  19.                       CMVC/6000 now supports IBM's DB2/6000 relational database
  20.                in addition to the ORACLE (3), INFORMIX (4) and SYBASE (5)
  21.                databases that were previously supported.
  22.            o   An OS/2 client feature added
  23.                       All three CMVC products now support a new OS/2 client.
  24.                The OS/2 client provides the same functionality as the UNIX (6)
  25.                clients but does not have the graphical browsers introduced in
  26.                the last release for the UNIX clients.
  27.            o   Migration support to migrate to DB2/6000 from ORACLE, SYBASE or
  28.                INFORMIX AIX databases.

  50. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  51.            INTEGRATED PROBLEM TRACKING AND CONTROL
  52.            The CMVC tool integrates problem tracking and design change control
  53.            into one configurable process to save time and effort.  A developer
  54.            will not have to work with and keep two or three separate systems in
  55.            sync.  All the information, data and access to the source code or
  56.            objects is available through an easy-to-use, intuitive graphical user
  57.            interface.
  58.            APPLICATION DEVELOPER PRODUCTIVITY
  59.            The CMVC actions that an application developer must take while fixing
  60.            a defect or implementing a feature are the same steps that an
  61.            application developer would normally take.  No extra effort is needed
  62.            when using CMVC.  Having the problem tracking functions integrated
  63.            with the version control and change management functions saves time
  64.            and effort.
  65.            FEATURE AND DEFECT TRACKING PROCESS
  66.            CMVC strengthens the application development process within an
  67.            organization as the process is defined and enforced by the CMVC tool.
  68.            IMPROVED APPLICATION QUALITY
  69.            The CMVC tool ensures that none of the required procedural steps can
  70.            be bypassed and makes this easy, for the application developers, by
  71.            automatically notifying each person that must take some action or
  72.            provide some input to the system.  Mistakes and wasted time are
  73.            eliminated when everyone who is part of the process knows exactly
  74.            what to do and when.
  75.            PRODUCT POSITIONING
  76.            The CMVC products are designed for customers doing application
  77.            development that need a more comprehensive solution that merges
  78.            defect and change management with configuration management and
  79.            version control.
  80.                   The CMVC Version 2 products span multiple platforms, which
  81.            allow customers to do their development on IBM RISC System/6000 (R),
  82.            Sun, HP, or OS/2 client workstations, while using the power of the
  83.            CMVC Server to provide the versioning and database support.  The
  84.            CMVC/6000 provides support for the DB2/6000, ORACLE, INFORMIX and
  85.            SYBASE databases on the RISC System/6000.  The CMVC for Sun systems
  86.            provides support for the ORACLE and INFORMIX databases on Sun
  87.            systems.  The CMVC for HP systems provides support for the ORACLE and
  88.            INFORMIX databases on HP systems.
  89.                   The new OS/2 client provides the same functionality as the
  90.            UNIX clients but does not have the graphical browsers that were
  91.            introduced for the UNIX clients in Version 2.

  103.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  Any CMVC Version 2 Release 2 server can
  104.            support any CMVC Version 2 Release 1 or Release 2 client.  Client
  105.            platforms for Release 2 are AIX, Sun, HP and OS/2.  An example is a
  106.            CMVC server on a Sun workstation supporting AIX, Sun, OS/2, and/or HP
  107.            CMVC clients.

  196.            objects to be controlled by CMVC.  For example, for 5000 files with
  197.            1000 defects/features approximately 150MB is required.  For 30,000
  198.            files with 6000 defects/features, approximately 900MB are required.

  299.                   The OS/2 client feature works as a CMVC client with, and
  300.            requires, one of three CMVC servers (AIX, Sun or HP) as a
  301.            corequisite.
  302.            COMPATIBILITY:  The IBM CMVC Version 1 products CMVC Server/6000
  303.            (5765-039) and CMVC Clients (5765-069) are not compatible with the
  304.            IBM CMVC Version 2 products CMVC/6000, CMVC for Sun systems and CMVC
  305.            for HP systems (5765-207, 5622-063 and 5765-202).
  306.                   The IBM CMVC Version 2 Release 1 products are compatible with
  307.            each other so each CMVC server (AIX, Sun or HP) can support any or
  308.            all CMVC Version 2 Release 1 clients; however, the IBM CMVC Version 2
  309.            Release 1 products will NOT support the Version 2 Release 2
  310.            OS/2 client feature.  Version 2 Release 2 level servers are required
  311.            for this client as a corequisite.
  312.                   The IBM CMVC Version 2 Release 2 products are compatible with
  313.            each other so any CMVC server (AIX, Sun or HP) can support any or all
  314.            of the CMVC Version 2 Release 2 clients (AIX, Sun, HP, OS/2).
  315.                   CMVC Version 2 Release 2 server code will also support the
  316.            Version 2 Release 1 clients.
  317.            LIMITATIONS:  The IBM CMVC Version 2 Release 2 products CMVC/6000,
  318.            CMVC for Sun systems and CMVC for HP systems have a dependency on a
  319.            relational database:  either IBM's DB2/6000 (supported by CMVC/6000
  320.            only), ORACLE, INFORMIX-OnLine or SYBASE (supported by CMVC/6000
  321.            only) and their related products.
  322.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  323.            CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  324.            o   Concurrent user authorization
  325.                       Customers must first obtain a NetLS password to install
  326.                and use the CMVC Version 2 products with CMVC UNIX clients.  The
  327.                NetLS password is obtained by contacting the IBM Registration
  328.                Center.  Detailed instructions on how to contact the IBM
  329.                Registration Center, the information required and how to obtain
  330.                the NetLS password will be shipped with the product.
  331.                       The CMVC products are licensed programs operating under
  332.                the control of the NetLS system supplied as part of the CMVC
  333.                product to control the number of concurrent CMVC UNIX (AIX, Sun
  334.                and HP) users.  NetLS is not used to control the OS/2 client
  335.                feature.  The OS/2 client feature is ordered separately for each
  336.                workstation.
  337.                       A CMVC user is a person using a workstation or an
  338.                X-terminal to access the CMVC client code to issue transactions
  339.                to a CMVC server.  This can be done through either the command
  340.                line interface or through the graphical user interface.
  341.                       NetLS uses a password arrangement to control the number of
  342.                concurrent CMVC UNIX users.  This password is CMVC and NetLS
  343.                server specific and represents the number of users entitled to
  344.                use the CMVC tool at any one time.  Each per-user feature number
  345.                (or token) ordered entitles one CMVC UNIX user to use the CMVC
  346.                product on a concurrent basis.  Each OS/2 client feature ordered
  347.                entitles one CMVC OS/2 user to use the product.
  348.                       This type of charging provides flexibility and economy as
  349.                the number of tokens needed will depend on the number of people
  350.                using CMVC concurrently.  To avoid nuisance interruptions, a
  351.                NetLS token is assigned to a user for a minimum duration of
  352.                fifteen minutes to allow the user to complete the task at hand.
  353.                Each transaction by the CMVC user renews the fifteen minute
  354.                duration.  This minimum duration can be lengthened by the user if
  355.                desired.

  366.                       Customers should refer to the IBM CMVC SERVER
  367.                ADMINISTRATION AND INSTALLATION (SC09-1631) publication and the
  368.                IBM CMVC CLIENT INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION (SC09-1595)
  369.                publication before installing and configuring the system.
  370.                       Installation of the relational database must be done
  371.                before configuring the CMVC/6000, CMVC for Sun systems, or CMVC
  372.                for HP systems server and client code.  The actual user license
  373.                needed for the database depends on the number of CMVC server
  374.                daemons that the CMVC administrator starts.  This will vary
  375.                depending on the number of CMVC clients simultaneously requesting
  376.                services from the CMVC server.
  377.                       The hard disk should be large enough to manage the data
  378.                stored in the relational database.  The size will vary depending
  379.                on the project size being controlled by the IBM CMVC products.
  380.                       Before running the client code, the server code should be
  381.                installed on the network.
  382.            o   Database information
  383.                       DB2/6000 may be ordered from IBM.  Refer to related
  384.                Software Announcements 293-586, dated October 12, 1993, and
  385.                293-136, dated March 16, 1993.
  386.                       Currently INFORMIX products may be ordered from IBM.
  387.                Refer to the related cooperative Software Announcement 291-699,
  388.                dated December 3, 1991.
  389.                       The ORACLE database products must be acquired from the
  390.                Oracle Corporation.
  391.                       The SYBASE database products must be acquired from the
  392.                Sybase Corporation.
  393.                       Installation of the INTERSOLV PVCS Version Manager on the
  394.                server (if required) must be done before installing CMVC/6000
  395.                (5765-207).
  396.                       INTERSOLV PVCS Version Manager (if required for use with
  397.                CMVC/6000) must be acquired from INTERSOLV.
  398.            DIRECT CUSTOMER SUPPORT:  Services for CMVC can be provided by the
  399.            local IBM representative or by the AIX Systems Center (ASC) in
  400.            Dallas, Texas.  Services provided by the ASC on a fee basis include,
  401.            but are not limited to, such items as the following:
  402.            o   Software Installation and Configuration:  This includes the
  403.                installation and configuration of CMVC and/or the database.
  404.            o   Family Environment Design:  This is assistance in designing a
  405.                CMVC family (project) with components and releases that will
  406.                conform to the customer's development environment.
  407.            o   Family and User Configuration:  This includes building the family
  408.                structure as defined during the design phase and adding CMVC
  409.                users.
  410.            o   Data Migration Assistance:  Tasks include identifying data files
  411.                to be migrated to the CMVC environment and assisting in the
  412.                production of script files to help automate the migration of the
  413.                data files.  Other services that may be required include
  414.                customization of user exits, user interfaces and specialized
  415.                skill transfer to users.

  419.            INSTALLABILITY:  A database migration script is provided to migrate
  420.            the database tables for ORACLE, INFORMIX or SYBASE AIX databases to
  421.            DB2/6000 for CMVC from CMVC/6000 Version 2 Release 1 (5765-207) to
  422.            CMVC/6000 Version 2 Release 2.
  423.            PACKAGING:  For customer convenience, a CD-ROM is available that
  424.            contains the server and client code for all three UNIX platforms
  425.            (AIX, Sun and HP).  The OS/2 client feature is available and shipped
  426.            separately on diskettes.  Each of the three products is also
  427.            separately available on alternate tape media as listed below.
  428.            CMVC/6000 (5765-207):  The CMVC/6000 product can be configured to use
  429.            either:
  430.            o   SCCS for versioning support (comes with the AIX operating
  431.                system), or
  432.            o   PVCS Version Manager for versioning support (must be ordered
  433.                separately).
  434.                   The CMVC/6000 product supports four database environments:
  435.            o   IBM's DB2/6000
  436.            o   INFORMIX
  437.            o   ORACLE
  438.            o   SYBASE.
  439.                   The CMVC/6000 product includes client and server code for RISC
  440.            System/6000 systems.
  441.                   The CMVC/6000 product is available on CD-ROM, 8 mm or
  442.             1/4-inch tape in object code format only.
  443.                   The CMVC OS/2 client feature of CMVC/6000 is shipped
  444.            separately on two 3.5-inch diskettes in object code format only.
