OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
3270/5250 EMULATOR ENHANCEMENTS
The Communications Manager/2 3270 and 5250 emulators provide a more
consistent look and feel with the IBM family of emulators, among the
best in the industry. New end-user functions are:
o Integrated mouse support
- Pop-up key pad window
- Screen hot spots
o Menu bar and pull-down menus
o Automatic font selection option
o Improved keyboard remapping
o File transfer usability improvements
o Response Time Monitor productivity aid
o 5250 Text Assist for PC Support and PC Organizer.
TEXT ASSIST AND PC ORGANIZER FOR 5250
Text Assist and PC Organizer for 5250 allows the 5250 emulator to
interface to the AS/400 (R) office functions via PC Support/400. It
provides most of the function supported under PC Support/400 and PC
Organizer.
The text assist function in Communications Manager/2 is a
"controller text assist," not the "PC text assist" supported by IBM
OS/2 Extended Edition or Extended Services for OS/2.
Communications Manager/2 provides the following functions not
found in PC text assist:
o Line commands
o 123 columns.
Communications Manager/2 does not provide the following
functions found in PC text assist:
o Multi-column edit
o Cursor draw
o Image view
o Shadow cursor.
RESPONSE TIME MONITOR (RTM)
This productivity aid is used to monitor the response times between
the 3270 emulator and the host system. Data is collected at
appropriate points and times during the LU2 emulation sessions and
forwarded to NetView (R) for analysis and presentation to the
administrator. RTM data may be forwarded through an upstream non-DFT
gateway, including Communications Manager/2. It is a compatible
subset of the data collected by the 3174 RTM feature and is supported
only on OS/2 2.0, or later.
APPC ENHANCEMENT
Full-duplex logical conversations can now be supported for improved
performance and simplified application coding for LU6.2 applications.
Any application with multiple outstanding requests or multiple
related tasks can take advantage of full-duplex operation. For
example, communicating file systems and database management systems
are good candidates.
DATA COMPRESSION
This support is for the architected SNA data compression at the
session level. It is compatible with the System/370 (TM) and AS/400
implementations. The support uses run-length encoding (RLE) and
Lempel-Ziv 9 bit (LZ9) compression algorithms. It is available for
all LU types. Configuration options allow for user selection or
program selection of the compression algorithm by session.
SNA data compression capabilities increase data throughput.
Many customers need to transmit large amounts of data across
communication links. The new SNA data compression:
o Increases data transmission throughput on low-speed lines
o Reduces costs on high-cost lines
o Improves productivity through quicker response times.
DISTRIBUTED FEATURE WORKSTATION
This separate licensing option allows a major portion of the
Communications Manager/2 workstation code to reside on a LAN file
server. The distributed workstation uses the file server for remote
DASD storage. Connectivity from the distributed workstation is
limited to LANs and ACDI (asynchronous communications device
interface). The file server has been tested with IBM LAN Server 2.0
and 3.0 and Novell (1) NetWare (1) 3.11 and 4.0.
Distributed Feature workstation enables multiple
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 end-user workstations to run
from a single copy of code on an LAN file server. It addresses the
customer requirements for reduction in:
o Cost per workstation
o Code control (administration of server)
o DASD usage.
The following distributed workstation functions are provided
at the file server:
o Configuration
o WAN connectivity
o Gateway.
In this configuration, the bulk of the Communications
Manager/2 code is stored on the file server and a small amount of
code is stored on the distributed feature workstations. The
distributed workstation requests its code and configuration from the
server when activated. The required code is "redirected" from the
server to the distributed workstation memory.

PCMCIA 3270 ADAPTER SUPPORT
3270 PCMCIA Adapter support is added. This adapter is the new credit
card-size adapter used with many new laptop computer models. This
support provides coaxial 3270 emulation for laptops.
CD-ROM ORDERING OPTION
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 now includes a CD-ROM ordering
option. Communications Manager/2 can be installed from the CD-ROM,
and the entire library of Communications Manager/2 publications can
be viewed or printed. This ordering option is the preferred method
for application developers because it provides all available
materials in one package.
IDLC FOR ISDN SUPPORT
The IDLC (ISDN Data Link Control) is the native protocol support for
ISDN. Inclusion of IDLC eliminates the need for a 7820 or 7830
protocol converter and allows connections directly to an AS/400 and
3174.
This is a continuation of the ISDN support begun in
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.0. IDLC is IBM's preferred ISDN
Connectivity.
CONFIGURATION/INSTALLATION/DISTRIBUTION (CID)
CID enhancements include additional functions supported via response
file parameters, including ISDN.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION/PROBLEM SOURCE IDENTIFICATION (PD/PSI)
This release of Communications Manager/2 continues the improvements
begun in Communications Manager/2 Version 1.0. These include:
o Extended service point for remote operations (ROPS)
o Command line interface
o Additional FFST (TM) (First Failure Support Technology (TM))
probes
o Enhanced formatted traces.
The extension of the service point for remote operations
support of Communications Manager/2 is a product-specific
implementation to allow NetView users, prior to NetView V2R3, to
access downstream Communications Manager/2 workstations. Users of
the current NetView release should use the LU6.2 flows available with
NetView V2R3 and above.
The command line interface (CLI) support is expanded to allow
access to important information for service and administrative
personnel. Personnel can access this information directly from an
OS/2 command line or via RUNCMD and CLISTS from a NetView Console.
Additional FFST probes provide more PD/PSI information. This
continues to improve problem notification and capture of pertinent
information.
The Trace Facility now supports additional API verbs and
return codes to help improve user PD/PSI efforts.
CUSTOMER VALUE
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT: Communications Manager/2 is now easier to
install and use. Installation and configuration procedures feature
significant functional improvements that reduce complexity and
increase productivity.
Communications Manager/2 exchanges a subset of SNA management
services data with Novell NetWare servers, for transfer to NetView.
Confirmation with Novell on the availability of the corresponding
NetWare for SAA (TM) support should be made before attempting to use
this capability. Refer to informational APAR II07032 for additional
information.
END-USER PRODUCTIVITY: All Communications Manager/2 end-user
interfaces are enhanced to provide increased usability and user
productivity. They now have a consistent Presentation Manager-based
end-user interface. The 3270 and 5250 terminal emulators are now
based on the Presentation Manager interface. Another emulator
enhancement is a graphical end-user interface for tasks such as file
transfer, color remapping and keyboard remapping. The graphical
interface improves end-user productivity for these tasks; users need
only point and click with a mouse. The emulators are standardized to
provide end users with a common appearance and operation.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT: Communications Manager/2 provides functions that
increase the capacity of workstations and communication gateways. A
Communications Manager/2 workstation or gateway can now be physically
connected to more than one host or gateway concurrently. This
Multiple PU2.0 support is an important capability because it allows
the customer to connect the workstation sessions in up to five
separate networks or hosts. For non-distributed function terminal
(non-DFT) workstations, the 3270 emulation session limit on
OS/2-based workstations is increased.
Customers using LAN connectivity can use the Communications
Manager/2 Distributed Feature Workstation to offload most of the
workstation's code to a file server, saving workstation DASD space
for mission-critical applications.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION: Communications Manager/2 protects the
customer's investment in OS/2 by providing upward compatibility for
applications written for the communications manager component of OS/2
Extended Edition and Extended Services for OS/2. Customers can also
run existing applications using the new ISDN services.
Communications Manager/2 also protects customers' investment
in hardware. Customers can take advantage of the power and
performance of OS/2 Version 2.1 and Communications Manager/2 on many
models of non-IBM system units. Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1
runs on systems that use 80286 processors and OS/2 Standard
Edition 1.30.1 (with CSD 5050). Customers can use existing systems
to begin the implementation of Communications Manager-based
applications.

COMPATIBILITY: Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 provides upward
compatibility for applications written to utilize the application
programming interfaces (APIs) of the communications manager subsystem
in the OS/2 Extended Edition, Extended Services for OS/2 and
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.0 products.
Customers can upgrade the communications manager subsystem in
the Extended Edition, Extended Services (TM) and Communications
Manager/2 Version 1.0 products. This upgrade may impact certain
other functions and subsystems in the Extended Edition and Extended
Services products. Following is a description of the impact of
upgrading the communications manager subsystems.
o Upgrade of OS/2 Extended Edition
When Extended Edition is upgraded, the functions and
subsystems outside of the communications manager subsystem will
be lost. Specific examples of these functions are: the LAN
requester, the database manager subsystem, the SQL LAN Only
Option (SQLLOO), and the Extended Edition level of the User
Profile Manager (UPM). The LAN requester is now available as a
distributed feature in the OS/2 LAN Server Version 2.0 and LAN
Server Version 3.0 products. The UPM function will be replaced
with the enhanced level of UPM in Communications Manager/2. The
SQLLOO function is not supported by the Communications Manager/2
product.
o Upgrade of Extended Services for OS/2
When the Extended Services communications manager
subsystem is upgraded, the communications manager subsystem is
replaced. There will be no impact to applications or subsystems
that previously utilized the communications manager subsystem.
If previously installed and configured, the database manager
subsystem will continue to function and it can be re-configured.
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 also works with DATABASE
2 (TM) OS/2 (DB2/2 (TM)) for users using a 32-bit OS/2 and a 32-bit
database environment.
The Text Assist feature of the AS/400 PC Support program is
supported in Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1. This includes
support for PC Organizer.
The Programmable Configuration function available in Extended
Services for OS/2 and the Batch Configuration utility available in
OS/2 Extended Edition are not supported in Communications Manager/2
Version 1.0 or 1.1. These functions are replaced with a new
installation and configuration process and with the implementation of
new general OS/2 configuration, installation, and distribution (CID)
processes. Because Programmable Configuration is not supported, the
OfficeVision/2 (TM) Configurations Utility cannot be used with
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.0 or 1.1.
Communications Manager/2 may coexist on a network with Novell
NetWare LAN requesters and servers. In addition, NetWare LAN
requesters may be installed on the same workstation as the
Communications Manager/2. Instructions for the installation of the
NetWare requester for OS/2 are included in the NetWare Services for
OS/2 product. Users will find additional information in the OS/2 LAN
Server Version 2.0 and NetWare from IBM Coexistence Guide. Refer to
the COEXIST.TXT file in the NetWare Requester before installing the
requester with either Communications Manager/2 or the LAN Server
Version 2.0 or Version 3.0.
Communications Manager/2 provides support for the IBM C Set/2
and IBM C Set++ 32-bit compilers. By using these compilers, advanced
32-bit applications can be developed that use the following
Communications Manager/2 APIs:
o APPC
o CPI Communications (CPI-C)
o Common Services
o System Management
o EHLLAPI
o NetBIOS (via LAPS)
o 802.2 (via LAPS)
o SRPI
o X.25
o ACDI
o ROPS
o Environment Manager
o LUA
o Connection Manager.
The C ".H Include" file is provided to support the
Communications Manager/2 APIs. The ".H Include" files have been
modified to support application development using the following
compilers:
o IBM C Set++ Compiler (for 32-bit applications)
o IBM C Set/2 Compiler (for 32-bit applications)
o Microsoft C Compiler Version 6.0 (for 16-bit applications).
Applications developed with the IBM C Set/2 and IBM C Set++
Compilers run on OS/2 Version 2.X. Applications developed with the
Microsoft C Version 6.0 Compiler run on OS/2 Standard Edition
Version 1.30.1 (with CSD 5050), or later.
SNA GATEWAY
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 may function as an SNA gateway.
A Communications Manager/2 gateway, which need not be dedicated,
allows multiple users to access a System/370 (TM) host transparently.
The workstation appears as if the connection is direct to the host.
The host perceives the gateway as one or more physical units (PU2.0)
with a maximum of 254 logical units (LUs) per PU shared among the
workstations. The supported protocols are IBM LU0, 1, 2, 3, and
dependent LU6.2. However, support is not provided for the dependent
LU6.2 protocol from an IBM SNA Services/6000 workstation to a
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 gateway.
The SNA gateway supports up to 254 concurrently active
workstations per PU on the LAN. Multiple LUs can be active on each
workstation (subject to the aggregate constraint of 254). LUs may be
dedicated to a workstation or pooled among workstations. Pooling
allows workstations to share common LUs, which increases the
efficiency of the application of the LUs and reduces the
configuration and startup requirements in the host. There can be
multiple pools of LUs; each pool is typically associated with a
particular application. Whenever a link is established through the
gateway between a workstation and the host, the LU is brought up when
the session is brought up. The LUs are then returned to the pool for
other workstations to use when the session is brought down.
Workstations that run Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 can
utilize SNA gateways that have been configured using OS/2 Extended
Edition and Extended Services for OS/2. SNA gateways configured on
Communications Manager/2 Version 1.1 can support workstations running
any of the following programs.

printer sessions. For LUA based applications the user must code the
exit for session level encryption support. There is no Session
Level Encryption support for LU 6.2.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: System performance depends on a variety
of system unit and communication load factors. These include the
type and speed of the system unit processor, number and types of
communication adapters installed, the line speed of the communication
service and the amount of processing done by the applications
utilizing Communications Manager/2.
PLANNING INFORMATION
The Communications Manager/2 Distributed Feature
implementation is based on the Communications Manager/2 Base product.
The approach used in Communications Manager/2 is to store the least
amount of code necessary in the distributed workstation and to store
the major portion of the run time code and configuration information
on an LAN file server. This allows customers to utilize their "low
end" workstations for more significant SNA applications.
The Distributed Feature workstation implementation provides
several benefits:
o Reduced DASD usage on a distributed workstation
o Common base code for all distributed workstations in the same
group
o Single point of service and maintenance for a group of users.
MEMORY AND FIXED DISK ESTIMATING WORKSHEETS: The following
worksheets may be used to help determine hardware capacity
requirements. To estimate requirements, add the recommended memory
or hard-file size for the functions and components desired. These
totals plus sufficient buffer must be added to the capacity required
for the base OS/2 operating system, other user applications, and the
requirements for user data.
The numbers shown in the worksheets are for planning purposes.
They represent the probable memory size in megabytes for concurrent
operation of the functions listed and not the total size of all the
code and data areas that comprise the functions. The quantities
shown assume an acceptable degree of swapping.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer must provide the minimum
hardware and software environments in which Communications Manager/2
Version 1.1 will operate. Before attempting to install the
Communications Manager/2 product, the customer should become familiar
with the requirements for fixed disk storage and memory of the
Communications Manager/2, the operating systems, and other
applications to be installed on a workstation.
Problem determination (PD) is a customer responsibility. PD
is an assessment of whether a problem has been caused by hardware or
software. PD is not complete until the cause of the problem is
identified. This assessment includes examination of available
symptoms using the PD procedures documented in the Communications
Manager/2 publications.
Problem source identification (PSI) is a customer
responsibility. PSI begins when software is determined to be the
source of the problem. PSI includes tracing the source of the
problem to a host system control program (SCP), an application
program, or another source. Assisting the customer with PSI is an
IBM service and support responsibility.
INSTALLABILITY: It is possible to install Communications Manager/2
from other than a diskette or CD-ROM drive. The drive can be a
shared drive on an IBM LAN Server Version 2.0 or Version 3.0 system,
other network server system, or an alternative local drive. For
example, when connected to an IBM LAN Server Version 3.0 system, a
user can specify the network drive and execute Communications
Manager/2 installation with no diskettes required.
The Programmable Configuration function available in Extended
Services for OS/2 and the Basic Configuration function available in
OS/2 Extended Edition are not supported in Communications Manager/2
Version 1.1. The Programmable Configuration function is replaced
with a new installation and configuration process and with the
implementation of new general OS/2 configuration, installation, and
distribution (CID) processes.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
The security for 3270 emulation use provides a session level
encryption capability. This is a selectable function.
The 5250 terminal emulator function of Communications
Manager/2 uses the UPM capability of LAN Server Version 2.0 or
Version 3.0 to support log on of the workstation on the LAN. Users
of the 3270 emulation function should rely on the host application
for security, auditability, and control.
When using the System/370 Remote Operations Support (ROPS) for
NetView, and a "RUNCMD" is issued, all information is transmitted in
the clear and is not secured. This transmitted information may
include the user ID and password. Transmitted information is also
displayed on the screen and is entered in the NetView log. The
display on the NetView operator's screen and in the NetView log can
be avoided by using the NetView suppression character when the
"RUNCMD" is issued. If passwords are transmitted to the ROPS
service, the user is responsible for securing the NetView terminal
and the NetView logs so that sensitive data is not compromised.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.
