  7. ABSTRACT          IBM SaveUtility/2 is a local area network (LAN) full-function
  8.            application for backup and recovery of workstations, including:
  9.            o   Servers
  10.            o   Gateways
  11.            o   Bridges
  12.            o   End users.
  13.                   Key customer requirements are satisfied with the backup of all
  14.            files in an OS/2 (R) or DOS environment, including hidden files, long
  15.            file names, and extended attributes.  Microsoft (1) Windows (2) and
  16.            Novell (3) NetWare (3) environments are also supported.
  17.                   Each LAN workstation can perform automated, unattended backup
  18.            of data and operating system in full, incremental or progressive
  19.            mode.  Restore can be a single file, multiple files, subdirectory or
  20.            an entire fixed disk.  IBM SaveUtility/2 completely restores the
  21.            entire system and data to the point of last backup, even if the fixed
  22.            disk were replaced.  The user or LAN administrator controls the
  23.            backup and recovery process.
  24.                   IBM SaveUtility/2 Version 1.1 includes enhancements to
  25.            Version 1.0, previously available as a PRPQ through IBM PC Direct.
  26.                   IBM SaveUtility/2 provides significant customer benefits,
  27.            including:
  28.            o   Centralized Control Improvements:  All LAN workstations are
  29.                backed up to a single location, enabling better control and
  30.                management of the decentralized environment.  The need for
  31.                additional hardware is reduced due to the single, centralized
  32.                location of the backup server.
  33.            o   Improved User Productivity:  Productivity is enhanced due to the
  34.                automatic operation of the program in either background mode, or
  35.                after hours scheduling.  Significant time is saved by eliminating
  36.                the need to recreate lost data or systems.
  37.            o   Improved IS Operations Productivity:  The IS operations staff no
  38.                longer needs to manage tapes from numerous and different systems,
  39.                move backup drives from one system to the other, or perform
  40.                extensive manual reporting and tracking.  IBM SaveUtility/2
  41.                manages the entire environment.
  42.            o   Reliability:  Critical data, including operating systems, can be
  43.                scheduled for a regular, automatic backup.  If extensive
  44.                modifications to data or operating systems are performed, an
  45.                interim on-demand backup can be initiated by the user, ensuring
  46.                the most current level of information.

  78. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  79.                   IBM SaveUtility/2 is a full-function backup and recovery
  80.            program for all workstations participating in a LAN.  SaveUtility/2
  81.            offers the capability of backing up all files in an OS/2 or DOS
  82.            environment including hidden files, long file names, and extended
  83.            attributes.  Any server, bridge, gateway or end user system can send
  84.            all data, programs and files to a single system that manages data
  85.            storage, tracking and control.
  86.                   IBM SaveUtility/2 improves customer quality by making it easy
  87.            and automatic to backup data from up to 250 workstations (servers,
  88.            gateways bridges and end users) to a single location.  This enables
  89.            better customer service to the end user, ensuring data and system
  90.            integrity and availability.
  91.                   Each LAN workstation can perform automated, unattended backup
  92.            of data in either a full, incremental or progressive mode allowing
  93.            full control of the backup process.  Data restoration of a single
  94.            file, multiple file, subdirectory or entire disk can occur for any
  95.            system stored data.  Restoration can be initiated by the end user, or
  96.            remotely by the administrator, simply by requesting the files from a
  97.            displayed list.  IBM SaveUtility/2 also  has the ability to
  98.            completely restore the system data to the point of last backup, even
  99.            if the disk were replaced.
  100.                   There can be a single point of administration and control with
  101.            IBM SaveUtility/2 for all workstations participating in the backup
  102.            system.  All workstations send data to a single workstation that
  103.            monitors activity, logs events, controls the processes, and moves the
  104.            data to archive storage.  From this workstation, an administrator can
  105.            manage workstation profiles, monitor on-going events, and analyze
  106.            past events for completeness.
  107.                   IBM SaveUtility/2 is independent of the LAN operating system
  108.            and relies upon base network transport capabilities for data transfer
  109.            between the participating workstation and the single storage site.  A
  110.            mass-storage device is required for each backup system implemented.
  111.            This device can be a personal computer tape drive, optical drive or
  112.            telecommunications link to another computer.
  113.            IBM SAVEUTILITY/2 VERSION 1.1 ENHANCEMENTS
  114.            Non-Redundant Backup:  Provides the ability to take a backup of
  115.            recurring data once, and apply it to all like systems and data.  Once
  116.            implemented, the data is never backed up again unless changed or
  117.            specifically requested.  This feature contributes greatly to the
  118.            speed of the backup and reduces the amount of the required archive
  119.            storage.
  120.                   Archiver Pooling:  Provides the ability to establish a
  121.            hunt-group methodology for the single system.  An incoming
  122.            workstation establishes a backup session with just one call to the
  123.            available resource pool, and the pool allocates the first available
  124.            resource to the event.  If all assigned resources are in use, the
  125.            contacting workstation is cycled automatically to try again later.
  126.                   Multiple Restorer:  Allows a restore activity to occur from
  127.            one resource while a concurrent backup or restore activity is
  128.            occurring at another resource.
  129.                   ACL Support:  IBM LAN Server products that use ACLs (Access
  130.            Control Lists) are fully supported.  The ACL is associated with the
  131.            file at backup time and is returned in its entirety during
  132.            restoration.
  133.                   IPX/SPX Support:  Improved base LAN support to include IPX/SPX
  134.            protocol.  Previously, IBM NETBIOS was a requirement of all
  135.            workstations using the system.  Today, the user has the option of
  136.            using either IPX/SPX, common in Novell NetWare products, or IBM
  137.            NETBIOS, common to IBM LAN Server products.

  177.            COMPATIBILITY:  IBM SaveUtility/2 Version 1.1 enhancements require
  178.            files archived with Version 1.0 be restored by Version 1.0.  It is
  179.            recommended that both Version 1.0 and Version  1.1 be resident until
  180.            all workstation files have been archived by Version 1.1.
  181.            LIMITATIONS:  An IBM SaveUtility/2 license is required for each
  182.            archiver.  An archiver supports a maximum of 250 workstations.
  183.            PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  Response time depends on a variety of
  184.            factors such as, line speed and load, workload at the backup server,
  185.            and type and speed of the hardware.  Due to extensive disk use, a
  186.            dedicated backup server is recommended for high-usage environments.
