VERSION 1 RELEASE 1
ABSTRACT CALLPATH/2 (TM) VERSION 1 RELEASE 1 (V1.1)
CallPath/2 V1.1, part of the CallPath (R) family of products, can
provide customers with a competitive advantage by enabling the
integration of voice with computer applications. These telephony
applications can help improve customer service, personalize caller
interactions, and improve employee productivity.
CallPath/2 provides a software platform that enables
applications to link the data processing power of the Personal
System/2 (R) (PS/2 (R)) with the telephony processing capabilities of
select telephone systems.
With CallPath/2, customers can automate the following:
1. Simple and repetitive requests (for example, account balance
information)
2. Computer/telephone coordination (for inbound calls and call
transfer)
3. Data/caller coordination (manipulation of call profile
information)
4. Call handling
5. Data collection (for example, teleservicing center utilization

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
CallPath/2 is an application enabler used to expand and
enhance existing OS/2 applications and to create new application
solutions. It implements IBM's CallPath Services Architecture and
provides the foundation for creating cooperative processing
applications that split the function between the programmable
workstation and a host processor. It can also be used in a typical
peer-to-peer environment with multiple workstations on a local area
network (LAN), both token-ring and Ethernet. Using CallPath/2,
customer provided applications can process call information such as
Calling Line Identification (CLID), Automatic Number Identification
(ANI), Direct Inward Dialing (DID) information, and Dialed Number
Identification Service (DNIS), if provided by the public network.
With this call information, applications can retrieve customer
profile information based on the telephone number identified
(CLID/ANI) and can automatically deliver the customer information to
the workstation screen of the person receiving the call. Using
DID/DNIS information, the dialed number information can be used to
select the initial application that is to be invoked by the person
receiving the call.
NOTE: Since all telephone systems do not support the delivery of ANI
and DNIS, see the telephone system reference guide for IBM CallPath
SwitchServer/2 (Program Number 5621-159) for the specific features
supported by each telephone system.
Applications can also be developed that synchronize the
transfer of workstation information and telephone calls, automate the
generation of voice telephone calls, establish conference calls, log
records of telephone calls, and invoke many telephone features from
the workstation rather than from the telephone keypad. This
"hands-free" attitude can make the call handler more productive,
since only one type of input medium, (keyboard or mouse) is used to
control both the workstation and the telephone.
CallPath/2 can operate with two different telephony devices,
the telephone system and/or the ROLMphone 244PC or ROLMphone 600D
series telephones, with the ROLM 9751 CBX (1) 9005.2 switch software
only.
1. Interfacing to a telephone system requires the IBM CallPath
SwitchServer/2 program. See IBM Programming Announcement
293-512, dated September 21, 1993 for the telephone systems
supported by IBM CallPath SwitchServer/2
2. The interface to support the ROLMphone 244PC or ROLMphone 600D
telephones is contained within this product, making connection
via IBM CallPath SwitchServer/2 optional.
IBM is working with telephone system vendors worldwide to develop
plans to allow the CallPath Services API to be used with their
specific telephone systems.
IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 is offered in two packages, orderable by
feature/part number. The SingleAgent feature is offered for the
customer solution requiring call control of not more than four
resources, (for example, agent extension, or automatic call
distribution (ACD) group). If more than four resources must be
controlled, then the MultiAgent feature is required. The MultiAgent
feature is also recommended if centralized call management is
required for a network of workstations on a LAN.
IBM CallPath Toolkit for OS/2 V1.1 provides a collection of
tools to assist the application developer. The package includes
sample applications, programming manuals, and a test/trace utility.
For application writers, the sample applications may be used in
developing applications.
(1) CBX is a registered trademark of ROLM Systems, Inc.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- ENABLES CUSTOMER'S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
Many aspects of business communications may be enhanced by
coordinating telephony function and computer data into workstation
applications. IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 is a workstation implementation of
IBM's CallPath Services Architecture, which provides a programming
interface to applications through the CallPath Services API. This
API provides capabilities to support inbound and outbound
teleservices. For example, applications may initiate calls and call
transfer, request monitoring of telephony events, and receive
information regarding incoming calls including automatic number
identification (ANI) and dialed number identification service (DNIS).
Key business functions that will benefit from these capabilities
include telemarketing and teleservicing centers, help desks, accounts
receivable collection facilities, customer service centers, call
centers, and message centers.
CallPath/2 reduces time and effort needed to incorporate
telephony functions into new or existing business applications. This
provides a faster return on investment. The result is faster and
more efficient service to their clients.
CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PRODUCTIVITY -- IMPROVES WORKER PRODUCTIVITY
With IBM CallPath/2 V1.1, customer applications can be developed to
improve productivity in several ways. In cases where the calling
number information is available, this can be used to retrieve
customer account information. Applications can direct the supported
telephone systems to generate outbound calls, transfer calls,
establish conference calls, disconnect calls, and answer calls.
NOTE: These functional capabilities are only available if supported
by the telephone system. See the telephone system reference guide
for IBM CallPath SwitchServer/2 (Program Number 5621-159) for the
specific features supported by each telephone system.
When customer calls are transferred within the establishment,
applications can coordinate the transfer of the telephone call and
the screen of information to another employee's terminal and
telephone. This improves employee productivity and accuracy, since
information need not be repeated; thus, customer service will be
enhanced.
Application programmer productivity is also enhanced through a
well-defined, easy-to-use API, allowing the programmer to focus on
the application's technical functions. The IBM CallPath Toolkit for
OS/2 V1.1 provides tools (for example test/trace utility, sample
programs, and programming manuals) for application developers to
write and test applications for IBM CallPath/2 V1.1.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION -- ASSET PROTECTION AND STRATEGIC ARCHITECTURE
IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 and the CallPath product family represent a long
term strategy for integrated voice and data solutions. Customer
investment in applications will be protected by the IBM CallPath/2
V1.1's software compatibility with future CallPath product family
changes. This CallPath application enabler is functionally
consistent with others in the family, allowing customers and
application developers to capitalize on their skills and application
design across operating systems and also provide transparency to the
underlying communications and telephone switch protocols.
IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 implements the IBM CallPath Services
Architecture to enable workstations to interface with telephone
systems, such as ROLMphone 244PC/ROLMphone 600D series, or other
systems as supported by CallPath SwitchServer/2. The CallPath API is
functionally consistent across Personal System/2, System/370 (TM),
System/390 (R), AS/400 (R), RISC System/6000 (R) computers, allowing
customers and application developers to capitalize on skills and
application design across these operating environments.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 is part of the CallPath family of products which
implement IBM's CallPath Services Architecture. This architecture is
strategic to IBM's support of the telephony environment; the
architecture facilitates bidirectional communication and cooperative
processing between a telephone system and an application executing on
a computer or workstation. This offers the customer a functionally
consistent interface to applications, independent of the switch
protocol. IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 is positioned to address not only a
broad range of inbound and outbound applications, but also any of the
switches supported by IBM CallPath SwitchServer/2.
CallPath/2 has been designed for flexibility and usability.
It is flexible as an API, allowing applications to initiate
first-party control or third-party control actions to the telephone
system. In first-party control, the telephone device is controlled
by the user of the device (telephone to telephone system link
control); in third-party control, the control of the telephone device
is by other than the person using that device, (for example, computer
to telephone system link control).
To facilitate usability and productivity, the IBM CallPath
Toolkit for OS/2 V1.1 is available to assist in the development of
efficient applications.
IBM CallPath/2 V1.1 provides similar functionality to
applications as do IBM CallPath CICS/MVS (TM), CallPath/6000 (TM),
and CallPath/400 (TM), but in a workstation (LAN or stand-alone)
environment with a graphical end-user interface. IBM CallPath/2
V1.1.'s responsiveness makes it ideal for business telephony/data
application development. Its capacity to harness the power and
flexibility of the personal workstation is its chief advantage.
Additional positioning information can be found in the
CallPath Family of Products Overview Announcement (IBM Programming
Announcement 293-512).
