  5. TITLE      IBM TCP/IP VERSION 2.0 FOR OS/2
  6.  
  7. ABSTRACT          Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  8.            Version 2.0 for OS/2 (R) provides upgrades to functions previously
  9.            provided in Version 1.2 and Version 1.2.1 for OS/2 and includes
  10.            support for the OS/2 2.0 and OS/2 2.1 operating systems.
  11.            Additionally, new functions further highlight and define the IBM
  12.            business solution for customers who are in a multivendor environment
  13.            or use connectivity.
  14.                   TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2 interoperates with IBM TCP/IP
  15.            products for MVS, VM, DOS, OS/400 (R), System/88 (R), and the AIX
  16.            (R)/UNIX (1) family.  To provide flexibility in ordering to customers
  17.            with different networking needs, IBM will continue to offer various
  18.            packaging options, plus new packages for most of the new functions.
  19.            Also, IBM is introducing a new price structure for TCP/IP for OS/2.
  20.            This structure allows customers to obtain various kits at a larger
  21.            discount.  Refer to IBM Programming Announcement 293-407, dated
  22.            August 17, 1993, for more information.
  23.                   The new kits with Version 2.0 include: X Window System Client
  24.            Kit, DOS/Windows (2) Access Kit, Applications Kit, NetBIOS Kit, and
  25.            the Domain Name Server Kit.  There will be no Source Kit offered.  In
  26.            November 1993, a MultiMail Kit and an OSF/Motif (3) Kit will be
  27.            available.

  74. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  75.            USER PRODUCTIVITY
  76.            The IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 product has been designed to improve the
  77.            productivity of the end user.  New functions have been added to
  78.            TCP/IP Version 2.0, with the goal of end user productivity in mind.
  79.            BASE KIT:
  80.            o   C/I/D Enablement
  81.                       TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2 uses IBM's Configuration,
  82.                Installation, and Distribution (C/I/D) guidelines.  C/I/D
  83.                enablement enhances the ability to manage the installation and
  84.                configuration of this product in sites that have multiple
  85.                licenses.  Installation over a network drive enables the system
  86.                administrator to keep product diskette images and configuration
  87.                information on a centralized code server.  This process will also
  88.                enhance the distribution of corrective service software.
  89.            o   Workplace Shell Support
  90.                       This function relates to the similar function now
  91.                supported by OS/2 Versions 2.0 and 2.1.  Because of this
  92.                additional support, TCP/IP Version 2.0 is easy to use.  Most
  93.                commonly used functions can be accessed via icons on the
  94.                OS/2 desktop.  File transfer and printing can be done by using
  95.                the mouse to drag files to file transfer windows and print icons.
  96.                This function resides in the Base Kit and the Applications Kit.
  97.            o   32-Bit APIs
  98.                       IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2 will provide 32-bit Socket
  99.                APIs, which include C Set/2 support.  The socket library is
  100.                divided into two parts:  protocol-independent calls and
  101.                protocol-dependent calls.  Static linking is not provided in
  102.                Version 2.0.  16-bit application development using Microsoft (4)
  103.                C6.00A will NOT be supported in Version 2.0, but all 16-bit
  104.                TCP/IP applications developed with the TCP/IP Version 1.2.1
  105.                Programmer's Toolkit will run unchanged with TCP/IP Version 2.0.
  106.            o   Frame Relay support
  107.                       Support for frame relay using the Network Driver Interface
  108.                Specification (NDIS) is provided in this release.
  109.            o   FDDI Support
  110.                       Support for FDDI using the NDIS is provided in this
  111.                release.
  112.            o   SNMP DPI Enhancements
  113.                       The original SNMP DPI Version 1.0 has been documented as
  114.                part of Request for Change (RFC) 1228.  With this release of
  115.                TCP/IP, SNMP DPI Version 1.1 is now supported.  DPI Version 1.1
  116.                now has two additional DPI library routines, and changes in the
  117.                structures are now available as well.  This support is provided
  118.                in the Base Kit and the Programmer's Toolkit.
  119.            o   TN5250 Support
  120.                       This function allows AS/400s to interconnect with the PS/2
  121.                (R) units relative to TCP/IP networks.
  122.            o   SLIP Enhancements
  123.                       SLIP support now includes the ability to write REXX
  124.                scripts for remote connections with site-specific requirements,
  125.                such as passwords and dynamically assigned IP addresses.  SLIP
  126.                also supports VJ compression for better performance to remote
  127.                hosts that also have VJ compression.

  129.            X WINDOW SYSTEM SERVER KIT:  This is a distributed, window-based
  130.            graphics system developed at the Massachusetts Institute of
  131.            Technology.  With this new release, TCP/IP supports Version 11
  132.            Release 5 (X11R5) of the X Window System server function.  The OS/2 X
  133.            Window System server enables the end user to display and control X
  134.            Window System client application programs in an OS/2 windowed
  135.            session.  These application programs can reside in one or more IBM or
  136.            other computing systems that support the X Window System client
  137.            function.
  138.            X WINDOW SYSTEM CLIENT KIT:  The X Window System (X11R5) enables X
  139.            Window System client applications to run on OS/2.  It includes X
  140.            libraries and Intrinsics libraries.
  141.            NETWORK FILE SYSTEM KIT:  The Network File System (NFS) allows users
  142.            to access files and run programs on remote systems if they are local.
  143.            This kit includes both an NFS client and server.  In this release,
  144.            the NFS client now supports file sharing and record locking.  This
  145.            provides a method of protection when sharing files with other users.
  146.            This support adheres to Version 3 of Sun (5)'s. Network Lock Manager
  147.            (NLM) protocol.
  148.             (5) Sun is a registered trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
  149.            DOS/WINDOWS ACCESS KIT:  This facility allows DOS applications
  150.            written to the IBM TCP/IP for DOS Version 2.1 programming interfaces,
  151.            and Windows applications written to the Windows Sockets API
  152.            Version 1.0 or Version 1.1 specifications to run in an
  153.            OS/2 environment on top of IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2.  This
  154.            product requires the customer to have the OS/2 Version 2.1 operating
  155.            system installed.
  156.            PROGRAMMER'S TOOLKIT:  The Programmer's Toolkit consists of 32-bit
  157.            APIs, which include sockets, Sun RPC, FTP API, and SNMP DPI
  158.            functions.  It provides support for the IBM C Set/2 Compiler.
  159.            DOMAIN NAME SERVER KIT:  A Domain Name Server is a designated network
  160.            node that enables clients to obtain host names, Internet addresses,
  161.            and host information.  It is also used to deliver and route Internet
  162.            mail to designated hosts.  IBM's Domain Name Server is based on BIND
  163.            (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) 4.8.3 and supports primary,
  164.            secondary, and caching-only name servers.
  165.            EXTENDED NETWORKING KIT:  The SNALink interface with TCP/IP for
  166.            OS/2 allows you to connect to another TCP/IP network over a SNA
  167.            network.  With this release, TCP/IP now supports the LU6.2 level of
  168.            SNA networks.  SNALink uses the System Network Architecture Advanced
  169.            Program-to-Program Communication (APPC) to communicate to remote
  170.            hosts and establish sessions between SNALink hosts.
  171.                   Also included in this kit is the Extended Networking (X25)
  172.            interface.  The X25 interface is the standard for protocols and
  173.            standard formats that define the interface between a terminal and a
  174.            packet-switching network.  TCP/IP packets are encapsulated into X.25
  175.            packets and are transferred over X.25 switched virtual circuits
  176.            (SVCs), as described in RFC 877.
  177.            NETBIOS KIT:  The IBM TCP/IP Version 2 for OS/2 NetBIOS kit is an
  178.            implementation of the Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS)
  179.            that has been specifically designed to operate with IBM TCP/IP
  180.            Version 2.0.  NetBIOS provides a standard interface for access to
  181.            network resources by an application program.  The NetBIOS program
  182.            allows peer-to-peer communication over the network with other
  183.            computers that provide compatible services.  The NetBIOS Kit enables
  184.            communication with any computer conforming to NetBIOS Internet RFCs
  185.            1001 and 1002.  This is the same product that was previously released
  186.            under a separate announcement.
  187.            APPLICATIONS KIT:  This kit is comprised of all of the applications
  188.            that exist in the IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 for OS/2 Base Kit today.
  189.            They include LPR/LPD, FTP, TELNET, ROUTE/ROUTED, REXE C, and RSH.
  190.            This kit can be used only if the customer has installed a protocol
  191.            stack equivalent to the protocol stack supplied in the IBM TCP/IP
  192.            Version 2.0 for OS/2 Base Kit.
  193.            OSF/MOTIF KIT:  This support includes the OSF/Motif Version 1.2
  194.            libraries for OSF/Motif client applications on OS/2.  The TCP/IP for
  195.            OS/2 X Window System Client Kit is a prerequisite for the OSF/Motif
  196.            Kit.
  197.            ASIA/PACIFIC KIT:  This kit is comprised of the Base kit plus DBCS
  198.            functions for the Asia/Pacific community.  The DBCS functions
  199.            include:  FTP, LPR, and LPD.
  200.                   The Asia/Pacific kit will be available on October 29, 1993.
  201.            TOTAL KIT:  This kit is comprised of the following kits: Base, NFS, X
  202.            Window System Server, and Extended Networking.  It is provided as a
  203.            convenience for those customers that may require all four kits.
  204.            MULTIMAIL KIT:  MultiMail is the state-of-the-art implementation of
  205.            electronic mail.  It can be used to send electronic mail across a
  206.            heterogeneous TCP/IP network.  A more basic electronic mail
  207.            capability is also provided in the Sendmail and LaMAIL functions of
  208.            the Base Kit, and MultiMail can be used to exchange text mail with
  209.            these functions or with any standard implementation of TCP/IP
  210.            electronic mail.
  211.                   MultiMail can be used to transmit multimedia messages in
  212.            conformance with the MIME RFC multimedia mail standard.  It supports
  213.            a wide variety of multimedia data, including text, Rich Text, images
  214.            (BMP, GIF, and TIFF), audio (wave and MIDI), simple video clips, and
  215.            binary files.  MultiMail provides an easy-to-use Workplace Shell
  216.            interface to implement mail objects (folders, address books, and
  217.            envelopes) which behave and resemble objects that exist in the more
  218.            traditional paper world.
  219.                   MultiMail will become generally available on
  220.            November 19, 1993.
  221.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  222.            For customers who have existing IBM TCP/IP Version 1.2 or
  223.            Version 1.2.1 applications and need to extend their communications
  224.            into a broader environment, IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 provides a
  225.            practical solution.  Investment in existing applications is protected
  226.            because there is no change to those applications.  However, support
  227.            for Kerberos Version 4 and NCS Version 1 functions at the 32-bit API
  228.            level does not exist in this new version.  All applications,
  229.            including Kerberos and NCS applications, that were created and
  230.            compiled on TCP/IP Version 1.2 or TCP/IP Version 1.2.1 will run on
  231.            TCP/IP Version 2.0.
  232.            SYSTEM MANAGEMENT
  233.            IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 provides the system administrator and network
  234.            administrator with the following tools to assist in the daily
  235.            operations of their TCP/IP for OS/2 networks:
  236.            o   Desktop computers with IBM TCP/IP Version 2.0 can now be managed
  237.                through the simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent
  238.                support.  An SNMP network monitor can get management information
  239.                base (MIB-II) data collected by the TCP/IP SNMP agent.  The SNMP
  240.                agent can also provide unsolicited notifications of significant
  241.                events to the SNMP monitor.  The SNMP DPI Version 1.1 is provided
  242.                to allow for user-defined MIB data.
  243.            o   To improve problem determination and serviceability, IBM TCP/IP
  244.                Version 2.0 provides IP packet tracing.
  245.            o   The PING command can be used to determine accessibility of hosts
  246.                and to isolate trouble.  The server and client functions allow
  247.                users to PING from one personal computer to another.
  248.            o   The IFCONFIG command helps in managing network interfaces.
  249.            o   The NETSTAT command allows users to query sockets, protocol,
  250.                memory, and interface statistics.
  251.            o   The NSLOOKUP command allows users to query Internet domain name
  252.                servers.

  351.            address multivendor communication requirements and to allow most IBM

  353.            Version 2.0 for OS/2 meets these requirements.  Users of the past
  354.            release of TCP/IP for OS/2 should consider upgrading to Version 2.0,
  355.            which offers usability and functionality advantages.

  357.                   IBM TCP/IP VERSION 2.0 FOR OS/2: INSTALLATION AND

  413.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  Any personal computer (or IBM industrial
  414.            computer) with an Intel (6) 80386 or above microprocessor (80x86
  415.            processors) that supports IBM OS/2 Version 2.0 or later with a fixed
  416.            disk drive and a 3.5-inch diskette drive.
