  6. ABSTRACT          The IBM Continuous Speech Series (ICSS) consists of a
  7.            Developer's Toolkit to develop speech-enable applications and a
  8.            Run-time System for execution and operation of those applications.
  9.            ICSS enhances the functionality of many software applications and
  10.            provides the ability to develop new software applications that meet
  11.            the dynamic needs of today's markets.  The Developer's Toolkit
  12.            provides the necessary tools to speech-enable existing products or
  13.            develop new applications that exploit speech recognition.  Using the
  14.            speech recognition application programming interface (API),
  15.            applications can be produced that recognize and process a continuous
  16.            flow of spoken U.S. English words.
  17.                   The IBM Continuous Speech Series for Windows will be available
  18.            through a membership program with program code shipping on
  19.            July 23, 1993.  The initial release of the ICSS for Windows program
  20.            allows Windows (1) application developers to speech-enable Windows
  21.            applications running in WIN-OS2 box of OS/2 (R) 2.1.  The membership
  22.            application is available by calling 800-627-8363 and requesting an
  23.            ICSS information package.

  84. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  85.            SPEAKER-INDEPENDENT SPEECH RECOGNITION
  86.            Speaker-independent speech recognition allows a wide range of
  87.            customers to take advantage of an application without having
  88.            extensive computer skills.  ICSS now expands the computer user
  89.            interface to provide the next generation of human/computer
  90.            interaction.  Almost anyone who can speak U.S. English, can use a
  91.            speech-enabled application developed using the IBM Continuous Speech
  92.            Series.
  93.                   The speaker-independent aspects of ICSS, continuous speech
  94.            functions and vocabulary size provide an unparalleled speech
  95.            recognition system.
  96.                   ICSS requires no speaker enrollment or training, unlike some
  97.            other speech recognition systems.  ICSS has been tested with a wide
  98.            variety of accented speech from around the world.  Though performance
  99.            varies somewhat, many accents are well recognized.  Recognition rates
  100.            improve with repeated speaker use.
  101.            CONTINUOUS SPEECH RECOGNITION
  102.            Continuous speech is a series of spoken words without a requirement
  103.            for pauses between words.  Natural speech can now drive your
  104.            applications.  Users can speak at natural, or even rapid, rates and
  105.            enjoy successful speech recognition.  This capability is well suited
  106.            for command and transaction applications that require high-speed
  107.            control of user interfaces.
  108.                   Continuous Speech recognition can greatly improve transaction
  109.            speed since most people can speak faster than they can type or press
  110.            computer function keys.  This quick turnaround time for transaction
  111.            processing can increase throughput by decreasing the amount each
  112.            transaction takes to process.
  113.                   Continuous Speech input, in contrast to discrete speech input,
  114.            as a means of speech recognition software, plays a key role for
  115.            speech-enabled applications.  Continuous speech, being the natural
  116.            method of communication, can provide a competitive advantage over
  117.            applications speech enabled with discrete speech or not speech
  118.            enabled at all.
  119.            MEDIUM VOCABULARY
  120.            The IBM Continuous Speech Series has a 1,000 word active vocabulary
  121.            that recognizes more than 1,000 words per context.  More complex
  122.            applications can be supported with multiple 1,000 word contexts that
  123.            can be rapidly switched so that the effective vocabulary is much
  124.            higher than 1,000 words.  Each screen or function of an application
  125.            can have its own defined, active context.  Contexts are switched
  126.            instantaneously as users progress through the program.
  127.                   The instantaneous context switching provides the ability to
  128.            have smaller contexts to improve speed and accuracy of the
  129.            speech-enabled application.
  130.            LARGE DICTIONARY BASE
  131.            The ICSS Dictionary currently has over 20,000 words, with phonemic
  132.            representations, available for building contexts to extend the
  133.            practical reach of the system to complex, real-world applications.  A
  134.            multitude of applications can be speech-enabled due to the robustness
  135.            of the dictionary and the provision of tools to add specific words.
  136.            The robust dictionary and the Add Word tools allow ICSS to
  137.            speech-enable a multitude of applications.
  138.            MULTI-PLATFORM
  139.            ICSS currently supports the OS/2 and AIX environments with the
  140.            Microsoft Windows 3.1 support (available December 1993).  ICSS
  141.            Windows 3.1 support will also execute in the WIN-OS2 session of OS/2
  142.            2.1.  Along with supporting multiple operating systems, the ICSS for
  143.            OS/2 product supports many of the popular sound cards via MMPM/2,
  144.            such as Sound Blaster (3) and Pro Audio Spectrum 16.

  147.            The recognition server can support multiple applications running on
  148.            the same machine, or on multiple machines.  The recognition engine
  149.            serves as a serially reusable resource.  The ICSS Run-Time System can
  150.            be installed as either a stand-alone executable, as a server or as a
  151.            client.  When installed in client/server mode (requiring two
  152.            licenses), the memory requirements for hardware resources are
  153.            reduced.

  156.            applications.  The API set gives the application developer an
  157.            efficient method of utilizing the speech recognition engine.  The

  388.            LIMITATIONS:  The IBM Continuous Speech Series can provide the tools
  389.            necessary to speech enable applications where U.S. English is the
  390.            language enabled.  However, the phonemes shipped with ICSS can be
  391.            parsed to build grammars so that other languages are supported.

  395.            PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  System response time may be slowed if
  396.            there is not enough memory in the system.  Likewise, if using a
  397.            processor below that recommended in the hardware requirements
  398.            section, speech processing and overall system performance may be
  399.            slowed.
  400.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  401.                   The Developer's Toolkit program package contains the
  402.            development tools and run-time system executables.  This enables the
  403.            developers to run a speech-enabled application on the same machine as
  404.            the development tools, without having to purchase a separate run-time
  405.            system.
  406.            CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  The customer must provide at least the
  407.            minimum hardware and software environments in which the IBM
  408.            Continuous Speech Series will operate.  This environment includes a
  409.            microphone that has a flat audio range.
  410.            INSTALLABILITY:  This program is shipped directly to the customer.
