  4. ABSTRACT          SearchManager/2 is IBM's solution for text retrieval in the
  5.            OS/2 (R) 2.0 environment.  It offers linguistic and precise search
  6.            options in the single-user or client/server environment, where the
  7.            server is OS/2 2.0 and the clients are either OS/2 2.0 or DOS/Windows
  8.            (1) 3.1-based.
  9.                   SearchManager offers support for a variety of document
  10.            formats, types and languages.  The documents may be located in either
  11.            the OS/2 file system, or Lotus Notes library, or a customer-chosen
  12.            library, where SearchManager provides the enabling support for any
  13.            library and a sample for a relational database.
  14.                   The SearchManager end-user interface complies with Common User
  15.            Access (CUA (TM)) '91 architecture (object-oriented workplace model)
  16.            and is fully integrated into the OS/2 Workplace Shell (TM).  All
  17.            SearchManager objects are represented as icons and allow for
  18.            drag-and-drop access.  SearchManager/2 offers thesaurus navigation
  19.            capabilities with IBM Thesaurus End User System Toolkit/2.  Refer to
  20.            Programming Announcement 293-340, dated June 29, 1993.
  21.                   First Customer Shipment:  By June 29, 1993, to an already
  22.            selected set of customers.  These customers will participate in a
  23.            program designed to validate that IBM has achieved the quality
  24.            objectives for IBM SearchManager/2, IBM SearchManager LAN Server/2
  25.            and Client/2, and IBM SearchManager Client/DOS for Windows in a
  26.            variety of production environments.  When these customers confirm
  27.            that IBM has achieved its quality objectives, IBM will announce

  57.            SearchManager/2 can assist in improving or enhancing decision making
  58.            and prevent duplication of efforts by allowing participants to
  59.            search, access and exploit information throughout the enterprise.
  60.                   SearchManager/2 increases user productivity and acceptance
  61.            through its concept of editor, browser, printer, mail function and
  62.            library of choice.
  63.                   SearchManager/2 provides a CUA '91 conforming (O-O workplace
  64.            model) end-user interface, allowing for reduced user training and
  65.            education.  With its support of a variety of document languages, it
  66.            allows the searching of documents in mixed language document sets
  67.            (the dictionaries have to be ordered separately).
  68.                   SearchManager/2 is designed for end users supported by
  69.            linguistic functions.  If desired, all inflections of a word are
  70.            found, even if the search is for the stem of the word only.  A search
  71.            for "mouse" would also find "mice".

  74.            SearchManager/2 provides a business solution for customers that need:
  75.            o   A high precision information retrieval system and/or
  76.            o   A high recall information retrieval system
  77.            o   Either stand-alone or integrated into office, hypermedia,
  78.                publishing, and line of business applications.
  79.                   SearchManager/2 provides the enabling support to handle
  80.            compound documents consisting of text and related objects (graphics,
  81.            images) via hyperlinks, offering a complete solution.
  82.                   SearchManager/2 allows for text retrieval of documents without
  83.            copying the documents to be searched.  It is designed to read
  84.            documents and build up the index, while the source document remains
  85.            in its original location and format.
  86.            IMPROVED SYSTEMS AVAILABILITY
  87.            SearchManager/2 offers powerful features for systems management
  88.            through its administration client.  SearchManager/2 allows periodic
  89.            administration to set up the system in a way that manual intervention
  90.            can be reduced to a minimum.  Parameters exist to update the index
  91.            based on time or queue.  Merging and cleanup of indexes can be set to
  92.            time events.
  93.                   In addition, it can be specified that certain OS/2 file system
  94.            directories are updated whenever they change, so that the index for
  95.            these directories is kept current automatically.
  96.            ASSET PROTECTION
  97.            SearchManager/2 protects the customer's investment in documents
  98.            stored with the IBM products SearchManager/370, STAIRS/VS CICS (TM)
  99.            and STAIRS/CMS.
  100.                   SearchManager/2 accepts a variety of document formats for
  101.            building the document index.  Editable Condensed Text Format (ECTF)
  102.            of SearchManager/370 and STAIRS is supported; migration of these
  103.            documents to SearchManager/2 is supported.  This will allow the
  104.            "rightsizing" of an application coming from host-based retrieval
  105.            without requiring manual interaction.
  106.            NOTE: With SearchManager/2, the document information formatted field
  107.            and paragraph class information will be lost.  The original data
  108.            content of the formatted fields will be interpreted as text in a
  109.            separate paragraph, if the ECTF documents are unloaded with formatted
  110.            field content.
  111.                   SearchManager/2 offers its powerful search capabilities for
  112.            the use of existing libraries or repositories without storing the
  113.            documents twice.  SearchManager/2 finds the documents and uses the
  114.            appropriate library services to retrieve and browse a selected
  115.            document.
  116.                   SearchManager/2 allows participants to use the server's
  117.            resources, while relying on the local resources of the Windows or
  118.            OS/2 clients.  It also allows participants in the enterprise to use
  119.            existing investments in PC clients based on Windows and OS/2.

  160.            SEARCHMANAGER/2
  161.            SearchManager/2 is a single workstation (SWS) and LAN-based product
  162.            providing text retrieval functions to users of OS/2 2.x.  In the LAN
  163.            environment, OS/2 and DOS/Windows clients are supported.
  164.                   SearchManager functions are divided into client and server
  165.            functions.  All functions dealing with man-machine interaction (such
  166.            as query definition, help, linguistic aid and thesaurus navigation)
  167.            are handled from the client workstation.  The SearchManager Client/2
  168.            supports two user tasks -- search and administration.
  169.                   When a user selects a function that needs to access the
  170.            document index (stored on the server and shared by several users),
  171.            the SearchManager/2 server is invoked with the appropriate request,
  172.            such as search and update the index.  For a complete LAN
  173.            installation, at least one client and the servers need to be
  174.            installed.  With its first release, the following combinations are
  175.            possible:
  176.            o   SearchManager Client/2 with SearchManager LAN Server/2
  177.            o   SearchManager Client/DOS for Windows with SearchManager Client/2
  178.                and SearchManager LAN Server/2.
  179.                   SearchManager/2 searches all kinds of documents, for example,
  180.            large numbers of articles, reports, contracts or laws.  This way, it
  181.            helps to reduce cost and avoid delays.
  182.                   SearchManager/2 is an application that allows for indexing of
  183.            text documents, allowing the users to:
  184.            o   Expand their existing information repository (corequisite to the
  185.                SearchManager/2 product) both online and offline
  186.            o   Retrieve information from information repositories according to
  187.                specified criteria and by various methods
  188.            o   Retrieve information with support of linguistic functions that
  189.                allows finding, for example, all inflections of a word, even if
  190.                the search was for the stem of the word only (example: search for
  191.                "mouse" finds also "mice")
  192.            o   Have retrieved information displayed at a terminal and further
  193.                processed: edited, distributed, or printed.
  194.                   The computer is used for searching an information base at high
  195.            speed.  The information bases, that is, the total body of information
  196.            that someone wishes to search, are kept available online on direct
  197.            access storage devices.
  198.                   For the retrieval of information, a structured question must
  199.            be provided to the system.  This question is called a "query".  The
  200.            questions are simple to specify with no requirement to know
  201.            predefined keywords.  Searches can be made to find any word or phrase
  202.            in a document.  The answer to the question (search result) is a list
  203.            of the documents that satisfy the conditions imposed by the query.
  204.                   SearchManager/2 enables the examination of individual
  205.            documents either at the display terminal or printed on paper (the
  206.            printing is done via OS/2 2.0 drag-and-drop and not part of IBM
  207.            SearchManager/2).

  209.            The SearchManager Client/2 (end-user and administration task)
  210.            supports the CUA '91 architecture (O-O workplace model) and allows
  211.            for novice and expert users.

  286.            The basic license includes the language dictionary for the selected
  287.            National Language Support (NLS) language and U.S. English.  The

  289.            dictionaries have to be ordered separately, and will be charged
  290.            separately and packaged separately.

  409.            COMPATIBILITY:  SearchManager LAN Server/2 can use a document index
  410.            that has been created by SearchManager/2.  If a user wants to
  411.            "upgrade" from SearchManager/2 to SearchManager LAN Server/2, the
  412.            user can do so by:
  413.            o   Saving the created document index
  414.            o   Removing (uninstall) the SearchManager/2 product
  415.            o   Installing SearchManager LAN Server/2 (server and client)
  416.            o   Connecting the saved document index.
  417.                   Customers can continue to search on the existing document
  418.            index.
  419.                   SearchManager/2 and SearchManager LAN Server/2 cannot be
  420.            installed in parallel; however, a SearchManager/2 Client user of
  421.            SearchManager LAN Server/2 can also install the server part of
  422.            SearchManager LAN Server/2 as a local server (according to the
  423.            license agreement).
  424.                   SearchManager/2 products support IBM SearchManager/370 ECTF.
  425.            NOTE: Each document must be in code page 850 in a separate OS/2  file
  426.            and that some attribute information is not supported.

  438.                -   Document type (for example, flat ASCII, WordPerfect, or Word)
  439.                    and content (for example, few verses many unique words).
  440.            o   For searching:
  441.                -   Complexity of the query
  442.                -   Number of indexed documents
  443.                -   Number of documents returned in the result list.

  527.                   IBM SearchManager uses the security and auditability features
  528.            of the underlying OS/2 operating system, the IBM OS/2 LAN Server

  530.                   Administration of SearchManager LAN Server/2 and document
  531.            index can only be done by a LAN administrator, not by an end user.
  532.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
  533.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
  534.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  535.            facilities.
