  5. ABSTRACT          Ultimedia (R) Builder/2 is a low-cost multimedia authoring
  6.            solution that creates exciting multimedia applications.  It is
  7.            intended for all multimedia presentation and application creators --
  8.            from the novice and casual user to the professional developer.
  9.                   Features include:
  10.            o   Scripting editor with graphical front end

  15.            The graphical interface allows users to create, without the need to
  16.            know programming, a visual representation of a filmstrip-like format
  17.            that shows the sequence of the multimedia objects (images, audio,
  18.            video and others) in the presentation being created.
  19.                   The text interface allows more experienced users to create
  20.            applications and edit Audio Visual Authoring/2 Language (AVA/2)
  21.            statements directly as text.  It is suitable for applications that
  22.            require the full power of the AVA/2 language.
  23.                   The graphical user interface and the text interface can be
  24.            used independently or together to create applications and author
  25.            Ultimedia Builder/2 stories.  The two editing formats present
  26.            different, but always synchronized, views of the same story and allow
  27.            a suitable interface for the novice creator and the advanced and
  28.            experienced developer.  Standard editing functions such as cut, copy,
  29.            paste, insert and delete are provided in both editor formats.
  30.            Debugging is easier with the ability to run a story in step mode from
  31.            any point in the story and display variables at each step.
  32.                   Ultimedia Builder/2 is part of the Ultimedia Tool Series, a
  33.            set of multimedia software tools provided by IBM and other
  34.            independent software developers.  Users can easily "drag and drop"
  35.            multimedia objects from Workplace/2 (refer to Programming

  37.            Announcement 293-330), and the Workplace Shell (TM) onto Builder/2.

  71. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  72.                   An author can use Ultimedia Builder/2 to develop multimedia
  73.            applications that meet information delivery needs in the areas of
  74.            education and training, advertising, news stories, product
  75.            merchandising, expert system diagnostics and many others.  Ultimedia
  76.            Builder/2 allows the combination of text, graphics, images, audio,
  77.            and full-motion video into desktop audio visual productions for a
  78.            powerful way to communicate.
  79.                   Ultimedia Builder/2 creates multimedia scripts using the Audio
  80.            Visual Authoring/2 Language (AVA/2).  AVA/2 is versatile and can
  81.            access data bases, communicate with other programs or extend its
  82.            function through user-written programs.
  83.                   The easy-to-use graphical interface can help reduce training
  84.            costs.  A state-of-the-art tutorial provided with Ultimedia Builder/2
  85.            teaches the novice how to use the product via rich audio/visual
  86.            techniques.  The sophistication of the functions is hidden from the
  87.            users allowing them to concentrate on results.  The User's Guide and
  88.            AVA/2 Reference Manual show how to use the advanced functions.
  89.                   Ultimedia Builder/2 can edit stories created using Audio
  90.            Visual Connection 1.05.  Ultimedia Builder/2 supports image and audio
  91.            files created in Audio Visual Connection 1.05.  Since Ultimedia
  92.            Builder/2 uses the services of MMPM/2 to drive multimedia hardware
  93.            and files, as the capabilities of MMPM/2 are expanded, the
  94.            capabilities of Ultimedia Builder/2 are expanded to include new
  95.            multimedia hardware and files.
  96.                   Ultimedia Builder/2 is an OS/2 2.1 Presentation Manager (R)
  97.            application and takes advantage of the OS/2 2.1 32-bit operating
  98.            system.  AVA/2 derives enhanced performance through the
  99.            implementation of OS/2 32 (TM)-bit architecture, multithreading, and
  100.            stream processing.
  101.                   Use of the MMPM/2 Media Control Interface (MCI) to play audio
  102.            and video makes AVA/2 automatically applicable to all current and
  103.            future A/V adapters supported by MMPM/2.  OS/2 2.1 PM systems with
  104.            MMPM/2 can run applications created with Ultimedia Builder/2.

  112.            From the multimedia support built directly into OS/2 2.1 to the new
  113.            multimedia PS/2s, IBM continues its commitment to provide superior
  114.            multimedia software with its Ultimedia brand of products.  One of the
  115.            first IBM Multimedia offerings was the award-winning Audio Visual
  116.            Connection (R)  The Audio Visual Connection is a comprehensive
  117.            multimedia authoring product offering image, audio, graphics, text,
  118.            analog (M-Motion) and digital (DVI) full-motion video in one
  119.            complete, integrated package.
  120.                   With the announcement of Ultimedia Builder/2, Ultimedia
  121.            Workplace/2, and Ultimedia Perfect Image/2, a set of OS/2 2.1
  122.            multimedia tools, the customer can now choose a modular solution.
  123.            Rather than acquiring one "do-everything" package, a customer can
  124.            select the tools best suited for the required tasks and seamlessly
  125.            operate these tools to create professional multimedia applications.
  126.            In addition, a customer can complement the tools in the set with the
  127.            other multimedia tools included in the Ultimedia Tools Series.
  128.                   Ultimedia Builder/2, Ultimedia Workplace/2 and Ultimedia
  129.            Perfect Image/2 all follow CUA (TM) requirements so that learning to
  130.            use one tool can minimize the time needed to learn another.  Because
  131.            these tools were designed to be interoperable, media objects such as
  132.            image, audio and video files can be "dragged" from one tool and
  133.            "dropped" into another.  Media objects can also be easily exchanged
  134.            between Ultimedia Builder/2, Ultimedia Workplace/2 and Ultimedia
  135.            Perfect Image/2, and the tools included in the Ultimedia Tools

  190.                existing Audio Visual Connection image, as well as defining the
  191.                text styles, sizes, colors and drop shadows.  In addition to text
  192.                handling, support is available for creating, editing, moving and
  193.                deleting trigger fields.  Text plane support reads any file
  194.                supported by MMIO Procs but will write only Audio Video
  195.                Connection file format.
  196.            o   AVA/2 provides for interoperability with OS/2 Interactive
  197.                Presentation Facility (IPF).  Users can combine, handle and
  198.                display high volumes of text including scrolling, hyper-like
  199.                linking and automatic flowing and formatting of the text.

  201.                write and query.  When used with the compatible Workplace/2

  274.                   There are some hardware limitations for multimedia PCs.  The
  275.            following pairs of adapters cannot be installed on the same PC:
  276.            o   ActionMedia II (69F9732) and M-Motion Video (95F1091)
  277.            o   Video Capture Adapter (94F3380) and M-Motion Video (95F1091).
  278.                   There are some language differences and some user interaction
  279.            differences between Builder/2 Audio Visual Connection/2 and Audio
  280.            Visual Connection 1.05 AVA.  These differences are documented in an
  281.            appendix of the Builder/2 User's Guide.  Performance is impacted by
  282.            the amount of memory available, the number of other applications
  283.            running simultaneously and how well OS/2 2.1 is tuned for the
  284.            computer.
