TITLE PLANTWORKS STARTER SERVICES/2 AND PLANTWORKS DISPLAY SERVICES/2
ABSTRACT Additions to the PlantWorks (R) product family are announced
today; the new products are Starter Services/2 and Display
Services/2.
Starter Services/2 provides PlantWorks functionality on a
stand-alone node. It serves as a starter set for PlantWorks
application development and minimizes system resource requirements
and greatly reduces installation complexity. It is a low-cost way of
gaining access to PlantWorks capabilities. There is no
communication, networking or distribution support which in effect
makes the Starter Services/2 node an island of automation. The
Starter Services/2 node includes build-time support for developing
and documenting applications. It allows applications to be created
from a group of defined services, such as alarms, automatic event
responses, reports, retained historic data, the data to be operated
on, the logic to be applied to that data, and the graphical displays
to present that data to the operator. Starter Services/2 includes
run-time support for application monitoring, real-time graphical
application displays, report execution, debugging and diagnostic
capabilities as well as other run-time services.
An upgrade charge will be provided to customers who want to
migrate from a Starter Services/2 single node to a PlantWorks network
environment.
Display Services/2 provides support for viewing and
interacting with PlantWorks manufacturing-control applications
running on other nodes in the network. It provides the user with
real time monitoring and control access to an existing PlantWorks
system. Display Services/2 provides such run-time services as:
o Monitoring applications
o Controlling applications
o Viewing and printing warning logger data and event logger
messages
o Accessing restricted services.
Display Services/2 can only be used in conjunction with other
nodes in the PlantWorks network. This product will provide a
lower-cost solution for supervisors and front office people who need
only a monitoring and control application.
Starter Services/2 and Display Services/2 contain subsets of
existing PlantWorks products.

OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
INCREASES APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT PRODUCTIVITY
Starter Services/2 provides a set of services that significantly
increase productivity in developing factory software applications as
well as ensuring an overall fit across a variety of industries.
It allows manufacturing and/or process engineers to create
applications by graphically manipulating block objects into logical
chains, linking manufacturing events and data to graphical displays,
and utilizing a rich set of wide-ranging application facilities.
Starter Services/2 allows customers to develop applications on
a single stand-alone node and to run with or without an application
development capability.
Starter Services/2 will support single node PlantWorks
functionality without the ability to communicate with remote nodes.
It provides this reduced communication function environment to serve
as a starter set for application development while minimizing system
resource requirements and significantly reducing complexity.
LOW COST MONITORING AND CONTROL CAPABILITY
The Display Services/2 product enables display-only operation of
remote nodes. This product reduces network traffic and allows more
nodes to be supported on a single PlantWorks network. Display
Services/2 provides the customer with real time monitoring and
control access to a PlantWorks network.
Display Services/2 allows the plant operator to monitor and
control plant floor equipment, as well as perform other duties such
as entering data, displaying trends, requesting reports, responding
to alarms, and other functions.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
Benefits derived from applications created with Starter Services/2
will increase your customer's satisfaction. Among the benefits your
customers may realize are shorter order-to-delivery times, on-time
deliveries, consistent high quality, and more competitive pricing.
Any one of these benefits can strengthen your position with
customers. Together, these improvements can help sustain healthy,
ongoing supplier/customer relationships.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
The more effective use of plant resources, made possible by
applications created with Starter Services/2, can help you realize
added productivity. They can help you respond faster -- to
customers, to competition, and to market changes by helping you
develop and maintain tighter business controls.
Display Services/2 will allow you to reduce your operational
costs by providing your supervisors and front office personnel with
the capability of monitoring and controlling operations on the plant
floor.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- OPERATIONS COST REDUCTION
Starter Services/2 allows users to create applications in support of
plant operations. These applications use PlantWorks facilities that
provide a consistent application execution environment.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS -- ENHANCED COMMUNICATIONS
Communications between multiple organizational areas within a plant
may be enhanced via a local or plant-wide network utilizing the
networking capability of Distributed Application Edition. The
PlantWorks product Display Services/2 offers a low-cost solution for
monitoring and controlling these network communications.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- ACCESS TO ENTERPRISE DATA
Display Services/2 can help boost your corporate information assets.
The timely, reliable information gathered from the plant floor can be
used throughout your enterprise to help you work smarter, and grow
stronger, in today's complex manufacturing environment.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- CONSTRAINT RELIEF
Starter Services/2 can help you reduce your application costs,
eliminate production bottlenecks, and streamline your work flow. It
offers you immediate, as well as long-range, benefits.
GROWTH ENABLEMENT -- CONNECTIVITY
Starter Services/2 can be used today to address application needs in
specific cells or areas. Tomorrow, as your needs expand to
company-wide networking, the same applications can be a part of your
company-wide system of Computer Integrated Manufacturing.
Display Services/2 is now available to office personnel who
would not have installed PlantWorks on their desks in the past due to
cost.
END USER PRODUCTIVITY -- APPLICATION AVAILABILITY
Starter Services/2 reduces the cost of application development and
cell implementation. With the PlantWorks approach, you have the
flexibility to implement systems cell by cell or plant wide and the
application solutions that start at cell level don't have to end
there. Besides giving you immediate results, IBM's plant floor
strategy complements long range goals.
END USER PRODUCTIVITY -- PLANT OPERATORS
Starter Services/2 provides an advanced graphical user interface for
definition and operation with the applications. This interface uses
the services of OS/2 (R) Presentation Manager (R) and complies with
the Common User Access (TM) (CUA (TM)) graphical model, with minor
exceptions. This consistent view of the product shortens the user's
learning curve and enables a commonality of operation for all
applications developed using Starter Services/2.

Corporation.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
END USER PRODUCTIVITY -- ENGINEERS
Because they can use their own skills and expertise to solve plant
operations problems, your engineers achieve added control of their
manufacturing process by developing problem-solving applications with
Starter Services/2.
Display Services/2, through its monitoring and control
capabilities, will shorten the time from problem recognition to
problem solution, resulting in increased productivity.
End User Productivity -- Management Information Specialists
Your management information services can readily realize
advantages with PlantWorks. The self-documenting feature of
PlantWorks applications provides easier maintenance after
applications are completed, thus freeing up MIS personnel to focus on
plant-wide solutions and making MIS specialists more productive.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION -- ASSET PROTECTION
Starter Services/2 provides asset protection because it allows
applications to be easily created, replicated, modified, and
maintained over time. The use of symbolic references to all
resources used within PlantWorks allows resources to be physically
relocated without affecting the application, displays, and reports
which reference these resources.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT -- IMPROVED SYSTEM AVAILABILITY
Starter Services/2 provides alarms to monitor situations and thus
help plant operators anticipate problems before they happen and
before they get out of control.
Should a critical situation occur, using Starter Services/2,
an engineer can easily predefine a step-by-step course of action to
automatically correct the problem. Optionally, PlantWorks displays
can be used to present operators with alternatives and allow them to
determine the best solution to the production problem. In this way,
extensive downtime is avoided and work can resume as quickly as
possible.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT -- SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION
System administration is enhanced by functions and capabilities that
deal with management of the system:
o Printer management
o Systems error detection and reporting
o Run-time event logging
o Product installation
o Product configuration
Starter Services/2 and Display Services/2 improve these systems
management functions and provide a low-cost way to get started or
expand your network capabilities.
