  49. ABSTRACT
  50.           OS/2 (R) 2.1 fulfills IBM's stated intent to deliver an
  51.    enhanced OS/2 32-bit operating system.  It includes support for
  52.    Windows (1) 3.1 applications, a new 32-bit graphics engine, 256-color
  53.    XGA (R) and Super Video Graphics Adapter (SVGA) device drivers,
  54.    support for high-speed printers and popular CD-ROM drives.
  55.           OS/2 2.1 is enabled to support the emerging technologies of
  56.    mobile computers, pen-based systems and multimedia.  Multimedia
  57.    Presentation Manager/2 (TM) (MMPM/2) is included with this
  58.    OS/2 offering and adds enhanced audio, basic image and software
  59.    motion video playback capabilities for users of OS/2.
  60.           The Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 2.1 contains bindings, tools,
  61.    sample programs and documentation to assist the OS/2 software
  62.    developer.  The Multimedia Presentation Manager (R) Toolkit/2
  63.    (MMPMTK/2) allows developers to take advantage of MMPM/2 function.

  92. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  93.           OS/2 2.1 provides all the benefits of OS/2 2.0 and goes
  94.    further by delivering industry-standard device support, compliance
  95.    with industry standards, enhanced standing as a premier client, and
  96.    enhanced support for OS/2, DOS and Windows programs, now updated to
  97.    include Windows 3.1 and multimedia programs.  All the new features
  98.    are delivered on top of a stable, mature platform "fit and finished"
  99.    over time and in direct response to customer needs.  Two widespread
  100.    beta tests of OS/2 2.1 provided customer and software developer
  101.    feedback into the development process.
  102.           As the number of industry awards continues to multiply, and as
  103.    customers, the press, consultants and industry analysts generate new
  104.    praise for OS/2, it is clear that the market is ready for OS/2 2.1.
  105.  
  106.    WINDOWS 3.1 APPLICATIONS SUPPORT
  107.    The OS/2 2.1 product provides a single environment from which the
  108.    broadest range of PC applications -- OS/2, DOS, and Windows -- can be
  109.    used and displayed simultaneously.  Under OS/2 2.1, users now can run
  110.    Windows 3.1 standard-mode applications, including Windows multimedia
  111.    applications, and major enhanced-mode applications; i.e., Mathematica
  112.    and OmniPage Professional, not requiring a specific type of device
  113.    driver called a VxD.  Performance is comparable to that of native
  114.    Windows 3.1.  Windows programs also benefit from the inherent
  115.    protection provided by OS/2.
  116.           Other enhancements in WIN-OS/2 (TM) include:
  117.    o   The ability to start OS/2 and DOS applications from within a
  118.        Windows application
  119.    o   A new WIN-OS/2 Setup object allowing global configuration of all
  120.        WIN-OS/2 sessions in the System Setup folder
  121.    o   Improved performance of cut-and-paste operations
  122.    o   Improved performance of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)
  123.    o   Addition of the Level 2.5 Adobe Type Manager (ATM) fonts
  124.        providing an improved level of function and performance; True
  125.        Type fonts are included as well.
  126.           If users choose to install WIN-OS/, they also have the option
  127.    of installing this portion of the OS/2 2.1 code on a drive other than
  128.    the default drive.  Since WIN-OS2 enabling requires about 8MB of
  129.    space on the hard disk, this feature provides flexibility for users
  130.    with limited disk space.
  131.           WIN-OS/2 also has been enhanced in OS/2 2.1 to include the
  132.    Windows 3.1 File Manager, the Windows 3.1 printer and display device
  133.    drivers, and most Windows 3.1 accessories, including the following:
  134.    o   Calculator
  135.    o   Calendar
  136.    o   Character map
  137.    o   Media player
  138.    o   Notepad
  139.    o   Object packager
  140.    o   Paintbrush
  141.    o   Sound recorder

  145.           OS/2 2.1 provides support for Windows applications with
  146.    Object-Linking-and Embedding (OLE) capabilities if they run in the
  147.    same WIN-OS/2 session.  (The Windows Write and Paintbrush accessories
  148.    delivered with WIN-OS2 are OLE-enabled).  Users with limited disk
  149.    space are given the option of installing the WIN-OS2 3.1 accessories.

  152.    THE WORKPLACE SHELL (TM)
  153.    In 1992, the availability of OS/2 2.0 set the standard for
  154.    ease-of-use in the personal computer industry.  In response to user
  155.    requirements, the object-oriented Workplace Shell implemented in
  156.    OS/2 2.0 is fine-tuned even further in OS/2 2.1.
  157.    o   The icon representing a folder object is used for all DOS,
  158.        Windows and OS/2 program groups.  These new container objects are
  159.        created automatically when users choose to migrate their DOS,
  160.        Windows and OS/2 programs.
  161.    o   The migration facility is improved so that users migrating from
  162.        DOS, Windows, or OS/2 can retain their previous application
  163.        environments with minimal manual intervention.  The migration
  164.        database now includes nearly 500 applications.
  165.    o   The Settings notebook menu page is enhanced to support drag and
  166.        drop.
  167.    o   The visual appearance of notebooks is improved.
  168.    o   New graphic bitmaps are added to use as backgrounds for folders.

  171.    32-BIT DISPLAY DEVICE DRIVERS
  172.    OS/2 2.1 now includes 32-bit device drivers for SVGA, 8514/A, XGA,
  173.    XGA-2 and VGA display adapters.  The new SVGA display device drivers
  174.    support the most popular chipsets in the industry (Headland, ATI,
  175.    Cirrus Logic, Trident, Tseng, Western Digital, and IBM).  The SVGA,
  176.    XGA, XGA-2 and 8514/A drivers support sessions running in the
  177.    background and foreground, in full-screen and seamless modes, at
  178.    resolutions of up to 1024x768, with support for up to 256 colors.
  179.           Because of its design, OS/2 2.1 is enabled for new display
  180.    device drivers to be added as they become available from IBM or third
  181.    parties.  IBM also is working with the manufacturers of other leading
  182.    display adapters and independent software vendors to ensure that the
  183.    accelerated display functions, such as those implemented on the S3
  184.    805 and 926 chipsets, are exploited under OS/2 2.1.  These drivers
  185.    will be distributed on bulletin board systems as they become
  186.    available.
  187.  
  188.    SUPPORT FOR NEW PRINTERS
  189.    OS/2 2.1 includes support for more than 260 printers, including the
  190.    newest, high-speed printers, such as the following:
  191.    o   HP Laserjet 4
  192.    o   HP Deskjet 500 Series
  193.    o   HP Deskjet 550 Series
  194.    o   Epson and compatibles
  195.    o   Laserjet compatibles
  196.    o   PostScript printers.
  197.           IBM has worked closely with leaders in the industry to make
  198.    sure that OS/2 2.1 printer drivers are available.  Installation of
  199.    printer drivers is now easier to do.  Users can modify the priority
  200.    of jobs in the spooler in order to optimize printing performance.
  201.  
  202.    32-BIT GRAPHICS ENGINE
  203.    OS/2 2.1 delivers a 32-bit graphics engine that helps to improve the
  204.    performance of 32-bit applications and display drivers.  The Palette
  205.    Manager, a transparent color mapping capability, and a pixel
  206.    translation capability are new functions available to the application
  207.    developer.  Using the Palette Manager, applications have access to
  208.    more than 256 colors to provide clearer and brighter images.
  209.    Transparent color mapping allows one application to superimpose one
  210.    image on another.  Pixel translation enables high-speed color
  211.    changes, shading and image brightening.
  212.           Under OS/2 2.1, the 64K segment limitation is removed, and
  213.    applications have access to up to 65,636 bitmap handles and up to
  214.    16,384 device context handles.  These improvements result in
  215.    productivity gains for application developers.
  216.  
  217.    32-BIT MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT
  218.    Multimedia Presentation Manager/2 (MMPM/2) Version 1.1 is now a
  219.    separately installed feature packaged with OS/2 2.1.  MMPM/2 enhances
  220.    the functionality of the OS/2 system by adding digital and CD audio
  221.    and software motion video playback capabilities (without additional
  222.    hardware), which can be combined with traditional text and graphics.
  223.           MMPM/2 takes advantage of the features of OS/2, including the
  224.    ability to run multiple tasks concurrently, which is essential for
  225.    synchronizing multiple data streams.  And, the flat memory model
  226.    implemented in OS/2 is key in handling multimedia data objects that
  227.    can be many megabytes in size.  Multimedia applications written to
  228.    the Media Control Interface specification can rely on OS/2 2.1 to
  229.    manage sharing of hardware devices.
  230.           MMPM/2 supports the RIFF WAVE, INDEO, AVI, CD/DA and CD/XA
  231.    industry-standard file formats and includes device drivers for
  232.    leading audio adapters:
  233.    o   Creative Labs' family of SoundBlaster cards
  234.    o   Media Vision's ProAudio Spectrum 16 card
  235.    o   IBM's Capture and Playback Adapter (M-ACPA) card.
  236.           Several new user interfaces are included as part of the MMPM/2
  237.    enhancement to OS/2 2.1:
  238.    o   A CD Player allowing standard audio CDs to be played on a
  239.        personal computer.
  240.    o   A Digital Video Player allowing INDEO and Ultimotion digital
  241.        video files to be displayed on a personal computer.
  242.    o   A Digital Audio Player allowing digitally recorded audio to be
  243.        played back through a supported audio adapter.
  244.    o   System sounds and alerts for users of OS/2 2.1.
  245.    o   Lotus 1-2-3 and Excel macros, allowing users to annotate their
  246.        spreadsheets with audio.
  247.    o   Multimedia enhancements to the REXX procedural language.
  248.           The OS/2 2.1 product delivered on CD ROM also contains a
  249.    collection of multimedia data files.

  251.    ENHANCEMENTS FOR MOBILE COMPUTERS
  252.    OS/2 2.1 supports the Level 2.0 Personal Computer Memory Card
  253.    International Association (PCMCIA) specification for
  254.    credit-card-sized adapter cards, such as memory, I/O devices, modems
  255.    and LAN adapters.  These adapter cards come with their own device
  256.    drivers and configuration software and can be inserted or removed
  257.    while the computer is powered on.  OS/2 2.1 is enabled to support
  258.    cards (memory, hardfiles, and communications) complying with Levels
  259.    1, 2 and 3 of the PCMCIA specification.
  260.           OS/2 2.1 also complies with the Advanced Power Management
  261.    (APM) specification, which reduces a personal computer's consumption
  262.    of power and extends the life of the battery.  This support is
  263.    enabled automatically when OS/2 2.1 is installed on a system
  264.    supporting the APM standard, and an APM object is displayed on the
  265.    OS/2 Desktop.
  266.           The implementation of a larger cursor in OS/2 2.1 than in
  267.    OS/2 2.0 improves the visibility of the cursor on the screen for
  268.    users of LCD displays.
  269.  
  270.    ENHANCED CD-ROM DRIVE SUPPORT
  271.    OS/2 2.1 now can be installed from a CD-ROM drive, which saves time
  272.    and improves the ease of installing the system.  If a CD-ROM drive is
  273.    attached to the system, a CD-ROM object will be displayed in the
  274.    Drives folder.
  275.           OS/2 2.1 supports SCSI-based CD-ROM drives, including Sony,
  276.    Toshiba, Hitachi, IBM, Pioneer, Texel and NEC in combination with the
  277.    most popular SCSI-based adapter drivers (Adaptec, Future Domain, IBM,
  278.    DPT).  The "pluggable" design enables additional SCSI and non-SCSI
  279.    drives to be installed.

  281.    OTHER OS/2 2.1 ENHANCEMENTS
  282.    o   The problem debugging facilities in OS/2 2.1 are enhanced to
  283.        include the ability to log trap screens to the hardfile and
  284.        initiate process-level dumps.  Documentation is available on
  285.        request.
  286.    o   OS/2 2.1 includes changes to exploit Intel's new Pentium chip.
  287.        The first phase of this exploitation improves the performance of
  288.        DOS sessions through the use of virtual mode extensions.
  289.    o   Each DOS session under OS/2 2.1 is now able to run DOS and
  290.        Windows programs written to comply with the Microsoft CD-ROM
  291.        Extensions (MSCDEX).  OS/2 automatically handles the interface to
  292.        the CD ROM drive so there is no longer a need to install an
  293.        MSCDEX device driver.
  294.    o   OS/2 2.1 now supports a separate AUTOEXEC.BAT file for each DOS
  295.        session.
  296.    o   OS/2 2.1 is enhanced to run as an excellent client when attached
  297.        to an AS/400 (R) server using the PC Support Version 2, Release 3
  298.        product.
  299.    o   For users who prefer a hardcopy manual, the OS/2 2.1 USING THE
  300.        OPERATING SYSTEM  manual has been expanded to include most of the
  301.        information available online and also to provide useful tips and
  302.        techniques for using the system.

  307.    The OS/2 Online Book Collection is a collection of over 100
  308.    OS/2-based product manuals, "white papers" and product-related
  309.    publications delivered on a CD-ROM.  These publications are valued at
  310.    more than $1,000 if purchased separately.  The books are organized
  311.    into easy-to-use bookshelves with IBM Library Readers for viewing
  312.    under OS/2 or DOS.  The Library Readers are powerful search and
  313.    retrieval tools allowing fast, easy access to information.
  314.           The CD-ROM also contains tools for fast transfer and storage
  315.    on VM or MVS-based host computers for use with separately available
  316.    BookManager (R) READ/VM or READ/CMS programs.

  320.    DEVELOPERS TOOLKIT FOR OS/2 2.1
  321.    These build, resource, MMPM/2 and PM tools, as well as the System
  322.    Object Module (SOM) precompiler, can be integrated with IBM
  323.    WorkFrame/2, and are designed specifically to enhance productivity as
  324.    follows:
  325.    o   Create and modify dialog boxes for use with PM programs
  326.    o   Create and modify fonts for use with PM programs
  327.    o   Create and modify icons, bit-maps and pointers for use with PM
  328.        programs
  329.    o   Create .HLP files for panels, or viewable .INF files from tagged
  330.        files
  331.    o   Create binary files from resource editor files, making the
  332.        resources (dialog boxes, fonts, icons, bit maps and pointers)
  333.        available to the application
  334.    o   Access and create classes of objects
  335.    o   Convert an error, help and prompt or general text information

  347.    online API documentation, the user can quickly find needed
  348.    information.  In addition, API statements can be copied directly into
  349.    the user's program by "cutting and pasting" from the online

  381.    SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
  382.    MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  The minimum hardware configuration for
  383.    OS/2 2.1 is as follows:
  384.           PS/2 (R), IBM Industrial Computer, PS/1 (R), PS/ValuePoint
  385.    (TM) or selected non-IBM personal computer with a 386-SX or
  386.    compatible or higher processor, 4MB system memory and a hard disk
  387.    with 20MB to 40MB free space available to the operating system
  388.    depending upon installation options selected.  IBM recommends 6MB or
  389.    greater system memory and an 80MB or greater hard disk for many
  390.    application scenarios.
  391.           In addition OS/2 2.1 supports a broad range of hard disks,
  392.    diskette drives, adapter and display combinations, pointing devices,
  393.    printers, CD-ROM drives, optical drives and portable computers.
  394.           The hardware configuration for the Developer's Toolkit for
  395.    OS/2 2.1 is as follows:
  396.           Installation of the MMPMTK/2 portion of the Developer's
  397.    Toolkit for OS/2 2.1 and/or additional kernel debug version support
  398.    (OS/2 2.0, 2.00.1 Preload, 2.00.1 Preload Backup or 2.0 Service Pak)
