----------------------------------------
When you see how slim and light the new ThinkPad(R) 560 is, you will
know IBM has added another winner to its acclaimed ThinkPad product
line. How slim is it? Just 1.2 inches. How light? Just 4.1
pounds(1) including the battery.
This new model has OS/2(R) Warp Connect with WIN-OS/2(TM)
preinstalled with BonusPak applications. Also included are other
selected software applications.
The system has a Pentium 133MHz(2) processor with a 1.08GB hard
drive, standard. Options include a port replicator and an additional
Li-Ion battery. All models support Sound Blaster Pro audio
applications.
With the ThinkPad 560, you get a large color display -- a 12.1-inch
Thin Film Transistor (TFT) LCD (measured diagonally). It has SVGA
(800 x 600) resolution.
The best thing about the ThinkPad 560 is that you get fast
performance and a wide range of function -- all in a slim profile and
lightweight package. A ThinkPad 560 system combined with the
optional port replicator can easily become your primary computer,
providing an alternative to a desktop system unit.
Special Ordering Guidelines: The ThinkPad 560 with OS/2 Warp Connect

PCMCIA cards, allowing you to simply plug in the card.
PC Card Director with Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver: PC
Card Director helps you get status and information on PCMCIA cards
installed in the system. In addition, on OS/2 and on Windows+, the
PC Card Director can register application programs for PCMCIA cards
and execute them automatically.
The Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver enable supported
PCMCIA cards by sensing them automatically. PCMCIA cards supported
by Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver are listed in the
Compatibility and Supported Products section.
Audio: The ThinkPad 560 supports Sound Blaster Pro-compatible
applications. The system is equipped with jacks for external stereo
speakers or headphone and external microphone.
Video: The ThinkPad 560 system has PCI local bus support with video
acceleration, providing exceptional video performance.
Infrared (IR): The system has an IR transceiver for wireless file
and data transfer and printing. The IBM ThinkPad 560 new model is

Compatibility and Supported Products
Refer to the Sales Manual pages, or the external attachment pages, or
contact your IBM representative for a list of supported features and
options and compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is
updated periodically.
The ThinkPad 560 new models contain BIOS/Easy Setup/Diagnostics in
their Flash ROM, provide a GUI to set up the system, and power
management features for OS/2 and Windows users. BIOS provides the
hardware instructions and interfaces to maintain compatibility with
many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the
Personal Computer XT(TM), Personal Computer AT(R), and the PS/2(R)
family.
Limitations
o Users who want to display full screen WIN-OS/2 with screen
resolutions and/or number of colors different from the default
values must first install the ThinkPad utility program in full
screen WIN-OS/2 and reconfigure.
o When OS/2 Warp, Japanese version is newly installed, the font
character in boot manager will be displayed incorrectly.
o External CRTs that support only VGA resolution cannot be attached
if the display mode is both LCD and CRT (simultaneous display)
because the display port always has SVGA signal as long as the LCD
screen is on.
o These systems support PCMCIA PC Cards that draw a maximum of 2.64
watts (0.8 A at 3.3 V DC).
o Enabling IR on the host system during a co-sessions host session
is not supported.
o Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Version 3.51(4).
o Use boot manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive,
such as PCMCIA Type III drive.
o A suspend/resume operation during a modem application in the
Windows DOS box may cause the application to hang. The modem
application should be closed before entering a suspend.
o A suspend/resume operation during audio recording may result in
unexpected results. Audio recordings should be stopped before
entering suspend.
o The 32-bit disk access driver for Windows 3.11 or Windows for
Workgroups 3.11 in the preloaded utilities shipped with the system
can only be installed in a directory named "Windows." If the
Windows directory has been renamed, for example to WIN311 or
WFWG311, this driver cannot be installed by the utilities
diskette.
o Some optional features or applications may use the COM2 port.
OS/2 Warp Version 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM2 port is
already in use. Only one such feature or application that uses
the COM2 (for example, communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a
time.
o The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video
support for Indeo-format video file playback functions.
o When using the redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the
HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an infrared link at 115
Kbps, the ThinkPad 560 should be configured as the requestor.
o At 800 x 600 resolution, the 85Hz refresh rate is not supported if
64K color is selected with an external display (CRT).
o IRQ for Sound Blaster Pro is 5, 7, 10, or 11 only.
o Continuous use of the hard disk drive, such as reading long video
files, will impact battery life.
o The system is designed so you can install or remove the PCMCIA
card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports
this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the
PCMCIA card.
o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the
PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows only
one card to be used.
o PC Card point enablers can write directly to the hardware,
bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the
hardware may cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also,
point enablers may interfere with client device drivers that do
communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer
testing in their specific environments is recommended.
o The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when
attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external
input device port.
o With the Dual Super Twisted Nematic (DSTN) LCD model and the
screen in text mode, such as DOS or OS/2, full screen is displayed
in extended format.
o An "X-jack" type PCMCIA modem card can be used in the upper part
of the PCMCIA slot to facilitate insertion of the phone cord
connection by preventing interference with the table or desk.
o The LCD panel can be opened up to 135 degrees, not 180 degrees.
Suspend Mode Operational Considerations
o Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.
o When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power Management
(APM) is installed.
o The system should be either in hibernation or off when exchanging
the battery if an AC/DC adapter is not connected.
o During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 100 mW at 12
V. and PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60 mA at 12 V.
Planning Information
Cable Orders: All cables are included with the system.
Installability: The ThinkPad 560 new model requires about 20 minutes
for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and
powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other
memory and other optional features.

Security, Auditability, and Control
Standard Security Features: The electronic personalization feature
is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your name, contact address, or
phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned
on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data
is stored in the system's non-volatile memory and is displayed with a
password prompt.
Passwords
o A power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized
use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:
- Each time the system is turned on
- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
mode
Security Lock
o You can attach the Kensington lock to the keyhole on the back of
the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures
the internal devices under the keyboard.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
