Keyboard and TrackPoint III: The keyboard has the familiar layout of
a ThinkPad with a function key capability that allows you to quickly
access system functions, such as power management control. The
keyboard tilts to a comfortable angle for typing when the system is
opened, and there is a palm-rest area. If desired, you can adjust
the keyboard to have no tilt. The keyboard lifts up allowing access
to the FDD bay, HDD bay, and battery for quick upgrades or battery
changes in the ThinkPad UltraBay. The TrackPoint III is an enhanced
TrackPoint II(TM) with improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more
accurate pointing capability through improved software. The
"drag-and-drop" function of the click buttons is enhanced. You can
lock and hold the buttons in without having to keep pushing on them.
Processor: This system has a Pentium 133MHz processor providing
exceptional performance.
Memory: The ThinkPad 760EL systems are designed to use non-parity,
64-bit EDO SO DIMM memory. 16MB of system memory is standard. These
16MB systems can be expanded to a maximum of 80MB of internal memory.
This is a different type of memory and only the ThinkPad 64-bit 8MB,
16MB, or 32MB EDO SO DIMMs 3.3 V, non-parity memory options, or
equivalent, announced with these systems can be used. This memory
cannot be used with previously announced 755 or 760C/CD/L/LD
ThinkPads.
PCMCIA: The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two
Type II, or one Type III PC card or the new PCMCIA CardBus devices.
If additional PCMCIA cards are required, the optional ThinkPad PCMCIA
cartridge can be placed in the ThinkPad 760EL UltraBay, providing an
additional Type III slot. The ThinkPad UltraBay not only can
accommodate the PCMCIA Cartridge option, but it can also house the
optional 2.88MB FDD, an additional Li-Ion or NiMH battery, or a
second HDD (requires the second HDD adapter optional feature).
IBM PC Card Director software is preinstalled and provides support
for the latest PCMCIA standard, 2.1. This software enables many
PCMCIA cards, allowing the user to simply plug in the card.
PC Card Director with Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver: PC
Card Director helps you get status and information on PCMCIA cards
installed in the system. In addition, on OS/2 and on Microsoft+
Windows, PC Card Director can register an application program for
PCMCIA cards and execute them automatically.
The auto configurator and memory device driver enables supported
PCMCIA cards by sensing them automatically. PCMCIA cards supported
by the auto configurator and memory device driver are listed in the
Compatibility and Supported Products section.
Storage: The customer-installable hard drive is 1.08GB standard.
Optional 720MB, 810MB, 1.08GB, and 1.2GB HDDs are available. The
drive is easily removed by lifting up the keyboard. You can have
multiple "systems" simply by installing a different hard drive.
Systems can also be shared by users who have their own hard drive but
no ThinkPad system unit. A 1.44MB FDD drive comes standard. The
ThinkPad UltraBay, also standard with the system, is an intelligent
bay that switches its pinout signals to allow the installation of an
FDD, PCMCIA cartridge, second battery (Li-Ion or NiMH), or HDD in
what would normally be just the FDD bay. The installation of a
second hard drive requires the ThinkPad second HDD adapter optional
feature.
Audio: The system is Sound Blaster Pro-compatible. It is equipped
with jacks for external stereo speakers or headphone, and an external
microphone. A separate slide volume control is located to the rear
of the keyboard on the system.
Video: The ThinkPad 760EL systems have PCI local bus support
providing exceptional video performance.
IR: The system has IR transceivers in front and back for wireless
file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 760EL is designed
for compliance with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR data link
specification Version 1.0. The system supports three modes of
operation:
o IBM mode (from 576 Kbps to 1.15 Mbps)
o HP mode (from 9600 bps to 115 Kbps)

Compatibility and Supported Products
Refer to the 9547 Sales Manual pages or contact your IBM
representative for a list of supported features and options and
compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is updated
periodically.
The ThinkPad 760 family of systems is designed to be compatible with
the PS/2(R). The ThinkPad 760 family systems contain BIOS/Easy
Setup/Diagnostics in their Flash ROM and also provide a GUI to set up
the system and power management features for OS/2 and Windows users.
BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to
support the standard features of the ThinkPad 760 family systems and
to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently
operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT(TM),
Personal Computer AT(R), and the PS/2 family.
Limitations
OS/2 Limitations
o Users who want to display full screen WIN-OS/2 with screen
resolutions and number of colors different from the default values
must first install the ThinkPad utility program in full screen
WIN-OS/2 and reconfigure.
o When a CD-i format CD is in the CD-ROM drive, the system may not
start correctly when using OS/2 Warp. A fix will be provided
under OS/2 Warp APAR PJ19669.
o OS/2 Digital Video Player may fail to play some AVI format video
files.
o When a second HDD is in the ThinkPad UltraBay, it cannot be
formatted by the OS/2 Warp FDISK program after being assigned as
the logical drive. A fix will be provided under OS/2 Warp APAR
PJ19672.
o Some optional features or applications can use the COM1 port.
OS/2 Warp Version 3 will not load COM.SYS if the COM1 port is
already in use. Only one such feature or application that uses
the COM1 (for example, communications or PCMCIA) can be used at a
time.
o The OS/2 Warp FixPak XR0W009 is required for audio and video
support for Indeo-format video file playback and video capture
functions.
DOS/Windows 95/Windows 3.11 Limitations
o The 32-bit disk access driver for Windows 3.11 or Windows for
Workgroups 3.11 on the utilities diskette shipped with the system
can only be installed in a directory named Windows. If the
Windows directory has been renamed, for example WIN311 or WFWG311,
this driver cannot be installed by the utilities diskette.
Suspend/Resume Limitations
o When using Windows 3.11, ensure that the advanced power management
(APM) is installed.
o During suspend mode, the maximum power output becomes 60 mA at 12
V. During suspend mode, PCMCIA cards cannot consume more than 60
mA at 12 V.
o Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.
o If the system is suspended/resumed during the following
operations, unpredictable results can occur. The application
should be closed before entering suspend.
- Audio record
- Video playback or record
- Playback of MPEG file, AVI file, video CD, CD-i
- Active communications in DOS box (modem use) -- application may
hang
PCMCIA Limitations
o The ATA PCMCIA card is not supported when using Microsoft NT.
o These systems support CardBus PC Cards that draw a maximum of 2.64
watts (0.8 A at 3.3 V DC).
o PCMCIA diagnostics programs usually do not recognize slot numbers
greater than two. To diagnose a suspected faulty card, make sure
the PCMCIA card is in one of the PCMCIA slots of the system unit.
o Point enablers usually do not support slot numbers above two. If
using a PCMCIA card with a point enabler, make sure that the card
is in a slot on the system unit.
o PC Card point enablers can write directly to the hardware,
bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the
hardware can cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Also,
point enablers can interfere with client device drivers that do
communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer
testing in their specific environments is recommended.
o When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the
PCMCIA slot, there can be some cable interference that allows only
one card to be used.
o Before removing storage PCMCIA PC Cards such as hard disk, flash
memory, or SRAM, the computer must be turned off or the PCMCIA
slot must be powered off.
Other Tips and Hints
o When an external VGA CRT is attached, the display setting in the
ThinkPad setup features must be set to LCD or CRT, but not both.
o Use boot manager when booting OS/2 Warp from a secondary drive.
o To install OS/2 (OS/2 for Windows or OS/2 Warp) on the 760EL from
CD-ROM versions, the external FDD enclosure (66G3618) and the
optional CD-ROM drive are required.
o When using the redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for the
HP 100LX or HP 200LX to exchange data over an infrared link at 115
Kbps, the ThinkPad 760EL should be configured as the requestor.
o Video performance will be reduced when operating under the 64K or
16M color mode.
o Continuous use of the HDD drive and/or CD-ROM drive, such as
reading long video files, will impact battery life.
o The system is designed so that the customer can install or remove
the PCMCIA card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card
supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with
the PCMCIA card.
o The IBM Keyboard/Mouse Connector accessory is required when
attaching an external keyboard to the system via the external
input device port.

Security, Auditability, and Control
Standard Security Features for the 9547: The electronic
personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your
name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen
when the system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is
misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's non-volatile
memory and is displayed with a password prompt.
Passwords
o A power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized
use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:
- Each time the system is turned on
- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
mode
o A supervisor password provides a higher level of security than the
POP. The supervisor password protects the system functions from
being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware
configuration from unauthorized modification. The supervisor
password prompt appears when the hardware configuration is
changed.
o An HDD password (HDP) protects HDD data from unauthorized users.
Once the HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without
the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored in the HDD, the data
remains protected even if the HDD is removed to another system.
The HDP password prompt appears:
- Each time the system is turned on
- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend
mode
o You can use the hook on the hard disk locking mechanism to tether
the system with a user-selected padlock and chain or cable.
o You can attach the Kensington lock to the keyhole on the side of
the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures
the internal devices under the keyboard.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
