  51.                  The ThinkPad (R) 701C and 701CS have a new, unique, full-size  
  52.           notebook keyboard and display in a compact, 4.5-pound package that    
  53.           doesn't sacrifice an ounce of power or versatility.  The ThinkPad     
  54.           701C and 701CS systems give you everything you need to meet your      
  55.           business computing needs when you travel -- anytime, anywhere.        
  56.                  The innovative design of the expandable keyboard enables the   
  57.           full-size, 85-key TrackWrite keyboard to fit in the 7.9- by 9.7- by   
  58.           1.7-inch package.  The keyboard is cut in half diagonally, so when

  69.           displays have a maximum viewable area of 10.4 inches, measured        
  70.           diagonally.                                                           
  71.                  With the high performance of the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS       
  72.           systems, you have more than enough speed and resource to take complex 
  73.           applications on the road.  The systems are available with either an   
  74.           Intel** 486 DX2 microprocessor (50/25MHz) and standard 4MB of memory  
  75.           (expandable to 20MB), or an Intel 486 DX4 microprocessor (75/25MHz)   
  76.           and standard 8MB of memory (expandable to 24MB).                      
  77.                  Both systems include DOS, Windows+, and a suite of mobile      
  78.           software applications preinstalled on the hard disk.  In addition,    
  79.           OS/2 (R) Warp Version 3.0 (including BonusPak applications) is        
  80.           available on DX4-based systems as a preinstalled operating system     
  81.           with dual boot.                                                       
  82.                  Many new options are available for the ThinkPad 701C and       
  83.           701CS, such as the ThinkPad 701 Dock II Adapter Kit (1), the ThinkPad 
  84.           701 NiMh Battery Pack, an AC adapter, and an external floppy diskette

  472.           USE OF SUSPEND AND HIBERNATE MODES                                    
  473.           o   If you enter Suspend or Hibernate mode with a diskette inserted   
  474.               in the diskette drive, the same diskette must be installed in the 
  475.               drive before your computer can resume normal operation.           
  476.           o   If you enter Suspend or Hibernate mode when resuming the          
  477.               operation, the same HDD should be in the system.                  
  478.           o   If you enter Suspend or Hibernate mode with a PCMCIA card

  481.           o   If you are connected to a local area network (LAN) that           
  482.               periodically polls for station activity, your connection may be   
  483.               terminated while the computer is in Suspend or Hibernate mode.    
  484.               Any software program that was running over the LAN is not         
  485.               re-entered when you resume.                                       
  486.           o   The system does not enter Suspend or Hibernate mode while a       
  487.               PCMCIA modem card is in busy status.                              
  488.           GENERAL LIMITATIONS                                                   
  489.           o   The battery will charge in Suspend mode when the power switch is  
  490.               in the "on" position but will not charge if the power switch is   
  491.               in the "off" position.  The battery will not charge while in      
  492.               Hibernation mode.                                                 
  493.           o   Color display drivers for 256 and 64K colors for IBM OS/2 Warp    
  494.               Version  3.0 will be included on systems preinstalled with        
  495.               OS/2 Warp.  A 16-million-color driver will be added when          
  496.               available.  When any additional color drivers become available,   
  497.               the drivers will be provided on the IBM PC Company Bulletin Board 
  498.               (PCCO BBS).                                                       
  499.           o   IBM recommends 6MB, or higher, system memory and a hard disk size 
  500.               of 120MB, or higher, for many application scenarios in the        
  501.               OS/2 environment.                                                 
  502.           o   A maximum modem speed of 9600 baud can be used with FaxWorks and  
  503.               OS/2 Warp Version 3.0.                                            
  504.           o   Installation of the software update named WIN311.ZIP is required  
  505.               to use a WIN-OS/2 (TM) session when OS/2 for WIN is used with     
  506.               Windows 3.11.                                                     
  507.           o   The IR functions are not available under native OS/2 sessions at  
  508.               this time.                                                        
  509.           o   When using the Redirector feature of the Connectivity Pack for    
  510.               the HP 100LX to exchange data over an IR link at 115Kbps, the     
  511.               ThinkPad 701C and 701CS should be configured as the requestor.    
  512.           o   The modem should not be attached to digital or digital telephone  
  513.               PBX systems.  These systems may cause damage to the modem.        
  514.           o   The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS support software fax programs with    
  515.               Class 1 fax interface only, not Class 2.                          
  516.           o   The IBM Enhanced Mouse (92G7457) cannot be used with TrackPoint   
  517.               III.  When using the Enhanced Mouse, TrackPoint III should be     
  518.               disabled.                                                         
  519.           o   The system is designed so you can install or remove the PCMCIA    
  520.               card without turning off the system, if the PCMCIA card supports  
  521.               this function.  Refer to the instructions that come with the      
  522.               PCMCIA card.

  529.           o   When installing two Type II PCMCIA communications cards in the    
  530.               PCMCIA slot, there may be some cable interference that allows     
  531.               only one card to be used.                                         
  532.           o   The use of PCMCIA card point enablers is not recommended; you     
  533.               should use the IBM PC Card Director.  PCMCIA card point enablers  
  534.               may write directly to the hardware, by passing Socket and Card    
  535.               Services Release 2.1.  Writing directly to the hardware may cause 
  536.               problems that cannot be anticipated.  Also, point enablers may    
  537.               interfere with client device drivers that do communicate with     
  538.               Socket and Card Services Release 2.1.  Additional customer        
  539.               testing in their specific environments is recommended.            
  540.           o   PCMCIA card point enablers usually do not support a slot number   
  541.               greater than two.  If using a PCMCIA card with a point enabler,   
  542.               ensure that the proper slot is supported by the point enabler.    
  543.           o   The IBM 8516 Touch Screen Color Display and IBM ThinkPad Space    
  544.               Saver Keyboard require that the TrackPoint III be disabled before 
  545.               you connect them to the system.  To disable the TrackPoint III,   
  546.               follow the instructions provided in the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS   
  547.               User's Guide.                                                     
  548.           o   Password prompt is not displayed when the computer resumes from   
  549.               "partial" Suspend mode while it is attached to the IBM ThinkPad   
  550.               Dock II.  However, you must type the correct password to resume.  
  551.           o   All IDE hard disk drives, except the IBM ThinkPad 755 drives that 
  552.               are sensed and configured automatically, must be configured as    
  553.               "slave" when used with the ThinkPad 701C and 701CS systems using  
  554.               file bays in ThinkPad Dock II.                                    
  555.           SUSPEND MODE OPERATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS                               
  556.           o   Operating Systems:  The Suspend mode is supported when the PC     
  557.               card uses one of the following operating systems:                 
  558.               -   OS/2 Warp Version 3.0                                         
  559.               -   OS/2 2.11, and later                                          
  560.               -   IBM PC DOS 6.3                                                
  561.               -   Microsoft Windows 3.11 with DOS 6.3                           
  562.               NOTE: Do not remove or install PCMCIA cards during Suspend mode.  
  563.                      When using Windows 3.11, ensure that Advanced Power        
  564.               Management (APM) is installed.  The installation instructions are 
  565.               in the user's guide INSTALLING MICROSOFT WINDOWS VERSION 3.11 (OR 
  566.               LATER).  Without this step, power management will not work        
  567.               correctly, and can cause errors, such as mouse problems after     
  568.               suspend/resume.                                                   
  569.           o   Communications:  When the computer communicates with other        
  570.               systems via any communication PC card, the following precautions  
  571.               must be considered before using the Suspend function.             
  572.               -   When the computer is powered by the battery pack, the         
  573.                   computer automatically turns power off to the PC card before  
  574.                   entering Suspend mode, so the duration of Suspend mode will   
  575.                   last longer.  Therefore, the computer will not restore the    
  576.                   communications application when it returns to normal          
  577.                   operation from Suspend mode, except when the following PCMCIA 
  578.                   cards are used:  IBM PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem and IBM High Speed 
  579.                   PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem.                                        
  580.               -   To re-establish communication after suspend mode, restart the

  594.           PLANNING INFORMATION                                                  
  595.           CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS are designed  
  596.           for customer setup.  Setup documentation is contained in the user's   
  597.           guide shipped with the system.  The ThinkPad Pentium Upgrade Kit      
  598.           (755CS/CSE/CD) is not customer installable.                           
  599.           CABLE ORDERS:  All required cables are included with the system.      
  600.           INSTALLABILITY:  The ThinkPad 701C and 701CS systems require          
  601.           approximately 15 minutes for installation.  Installation includes     
  602.           unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system.  Additional time   
  603.           is required to install other memory and features, and to customize    
  604.           software.                                                             
  605.           PROBLEM DETERMINATION:  If a failure is found at initial              
  606.           installation, an instruction or error code is displayed on the        
  607.           screen.  Note this information and refer to the user's guide shipped

  610.                  The troubleshooting procedures consist of power-on self-test,
