OVERVIEW DESCRIPTION
In the all-pervasive telecommunications environment, digital
technology is rapidly replacing the conventional analog methods for
transmission of voice, data, and image. The ISDN uses digital
technology for simultaneous transmission of voice, data, and image
through standard interfaces over a single telephone line served by
digital switches. The Basic Rate ISDN (BRI) provides two B channels
for transmission of digitized voice or data at speeds up to
64 kilobits per second (Kbps) per B channel (without compression),
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 3
and a D Channel for transmission of signalling information at 16Kbps.
The IBM WaveRunner Digital Modem is an adapter that provides
basic rate connectivity to personal computers for communications over
an ISDN network. The unique feature of the adapter is its ability to
communicate through ISDN with devices such as PCs and fax machines
attached to an existing analog telephone line via modems. This
function allows end users to have a mix of devices distributed over
ISDN and analog lines, while maintaining the ability to communicate
from devices attached to an ISDN line with those on an analog line.
The adapter also supports many existing, widely used modem
application programs at speeds up to 64Kbps over ISDN and up to
14.4Kbps (without compression) on analog modems.
Functions supported under Microsoft Windows 3.1 are:
o S/T ISDN Basic Rate Interface 2B + D Channels
-- Each of the 2B channels can be used simultaneously to send or
receive data at 64Kbps per B channel
o Packet-level bonding

WAVERUNNER DIGITAL MODEM WITH IBM 7845 ISDN NETWORK TERMINATOR
EXTENDED: This package includes an IBM WaveRunner Digital Modem
packaged with an IBM 7845 ISDN Network Terminator Extended. It
includes all the key components needed to connect a basic-rate
telephone service to a personal computer/workstation. The IBM 7845
ISDN Network Terminator Extended is a programmable, stand-alone
device that allows a personal computer or a workstation equipped for
basic-rate ISDN and standard analog telephone lines, to share a
single digital phone line into the home or office. The Network
Terminator (NT) Extended provides the connection between the
telephone company jack and the WaveRunner Digital Modem. It will
also connect standard analog telephone equipment to the ISDN network
over the same ISDN basic-rate service. This allows customers to
replace their existing analog telephone service with one of the ISDN
B channels while continuing to use their existing phone equipment.
The analog telephone function of the NT Extended offers
several key custom calling features similar to those offered by the
telephone companies as options with regular telephone service. These
features are:
o Speed dialing
o Re-dial of last number dialed
o Repetitive re-dialing of the last busy number
o Return of the last incoming call
o Call Hold, Call Retrieve
o Call Waiting
o Call Blocking
o Three- or six-way conferencing

Hardware Announcement 194-252, dated July 26, 1994.
COST ADVANTAGE
With the continuing rapid deployment of ISDN services at low tariffs,
the WaveRunner allows end users to take advantage of these services:
o Line consolidation:
- ISDN provides connectivity to a variety of communication
equipment over a single link, eliminating the need for
separate lines for each type of equipment. For example,
using the WaveRunner, a personal computer, an ISDN telephone,
and an ISDN fax machine can be connected to a single ISDN
line, eliminating the need for three separate phone lines.
o Less connect time:
- ISDN's speed and reliability also reduces the costs by
requiring less connect time per transmission.
o Unused bandwidth elimination:
- ISDN when used as an alternative to a dedicated (leased),
backup high-speed link results in significant line cost
savings.
INTEGRATION OF BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
WaveRunner provides the flexibility of communications between devices
attached to an ISDN and an existing analog telephone network.
Therefore, an establishment/enterprise can have a mix of devices
distributed over ISDN and analog lines and still maintain
communications between devices attached to both of these as if they
are all on a single network.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS
WaveRunner provides connectivity to ISDN services, which uses digital
technology. Overtime, this method of transmission has been proven to
be highly reliable and superior in quality over other methods of
transmission.
CONNECTIVITY IMPROVEMENTS
As customers migrate part of their networks to ISDN, WaveRunner
offers connectivity for devices that are on ISDN for communications
with those on an existing analog telephone network, enabling
customers to gradually grow their networks to the desired environment
that can meet their business needs.
ACCESS TO ENTERPRISE DATA
WaveRunner provides ISDN connectivity to stand-alone workstations for
communications with other remote devices on an
establishment/enterprise network, which may be either an ISDN or an
existing analog telephone network, making it possible for the
stand-alone workstations to access establishment/enterprise data. In
addition, WaveRunner with the IBM LAN Distance set of software
products, provides remote LAN access to a stand-alone workstation.
The stand-alone workstation can have access to all available LAN
services/enterprise data remotely over an ISDN link. For more
information on the LAN Distance set of software products, refer to
Software Announcement 294-267, dated April 27, 1994.
UPGRADEABILITY
WaveRunner's function can be enhanced via new software upgrades as
DATA BASE : ALET PAGE: 7
they become available to ensure customers' investment protection.
INTEROPERABILITY
The WaveRunner Digital Modem has been tested for interoperability
with other ISDN products such as Network Express Interhub and
Combinet CB 150. The WinISDN API on the WaveRunner further extends
its interoperability to include other ISDN products, such as MAX
Digital Access Server from Ascend Communications, Inc., that support
Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).
In addition, the WaveRunner Digital Modem interoperates with
the IBM ISDN Primary Rate adapter to provide a connectivity solution
for the ISDN Primary Rate and Basic Rate Interfaces for applications
such as Remote LAN access. For more information on the IBM ISDN
Primary Rate Adapter, refer to Hardware Announcement 194-121, dated
April 27, 1994.
