  7. ABSTRACT          The POWERstation (TM)/POWERserver (TM) 250 series with PowerPC
  8.            (TM) technology are entry desktop workstations and servers binary
  9.            compatible with the RISC System/6000 (R) POWERstation/POWERserver
  10.            family of systems.  The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series is the
  11.            industry's first implementation of the PowerPC Architecture (TM),
  12.            featuring the 66MHz PowerPC 601 (TM) processor.
  13.                   The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 offers:
  14.            o   Integrated SCSI-2 and Ethernet controllers
  15.            o   Extensive growth capability from 16MB up to 256MB of error
  16.                checking and correction (ECC) memory
  17.            o   Internal fixed disk up to 2GB
  18.            o   Up to a maximum of seven SCSI devices (including an optional
  19.                internal fixed disk drive) on the SCSI bus
  20.            o   Optional 2.88MB diskette drive
  21.            o   Optional graphics adapter
  22.            o   Two 32-bit Micro Channel (R) card slots for optional features.
  23.                   The POWERstation 25T and 25W and POWERserver 25S offer the
  24.            same base function as the POWERstation/POWERserver 250, with the

  95. OVERVIEW   BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
  96.            The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series supports customers' business
  97.            objectives by providing a high-performance, desktop
  98.            workstation/server solution for compute-intensive technical
  99.            applications or multi-user commercial server applications.  With
  100.            either the POWER GXT100 graphics adapter or POWER GXT150 graphics
  101.            adapter the POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series workstation models
  102.            are ideally suited to 2D environments where high performance and low
  103.            cost-per-seat are important.  With the AIXwindows 3D feature,
  104.            Softgraphics support is provided to enable full-function 3D graphics
  105.            capability on all supported graphics adapters, including the GXT100
  106.            and GXT150 graphics adapters.  This feature provides cost-effective
  107.            and scalable graphics performance and consistent functions for the
  108.            entry 3D environments.  When configured with either a POWER Gt4e (TM)
  109.            or GTO Accelerator graphics adapter and appropriate software, more
  110.            demanding 3D applications are enabled.  POWERstation 25S, with its
  111.            standard 1GB disk drive and 8-port adapter, is a cost-effective entry
  112.            server for retail, branch banking, wholesale and plant floor
  113.            applications.  Memory capacity of up to 256MB and internal fixed disk
  114.            capacity of up to 2GB, coupled with a variety of input/output
  115.            devices, graphics, and communications features, are available to
  116.            configure the system as a powerful, entry POWERstation or POWERserver
  117.            for a wide range of business solutions.
  118.                   The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series desktop workstations
  119.            utilize IBM's PowerPC Architecture and are binary compatible with the
  120.            IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver family of systems, with
  121.            application portability and high throughput levels.  All AIX/6000
  122.            applications written for POWER-based RISC System/6000s (models
  123.            available before September 21, 1993) will run on the PowerPC
  124.            601-based RISC System/6000s without recompilation.  (The only
  125.            exception to this statement would be applications written using
  126.            kernel extensions which use certain privileged Assembler
  127.            instructions.  IBM is not aware of any applications using these
  128.            instructions.)  The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series with AIX/6000
  129.            Version 3.2.5, conforms to many industry standards in the open system
  130.            environment -- a key factor to enable customers to develop and port
  131.            applications.
  132.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  133.            The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series, with AIX/6000 3.2.5, offers
  134.            interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems,
  135.            expands the usefulness of those systems and maximizes the utility of
  136.            the 250 series.  Any POWERstation/POWERserver 220 or 230 series
  137.            machine can be upgraded to a 25E.  The POWERstation/POWERserver 250
  138.            series, with PowerPC 601 processor offers competitive fixed-point
  139.            processing and floating-point processing for the entry workstation
  140.            market.  The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series can be configured as
  141.            a diskless or dataless system with integrated SCSI-2 and Ethernet
  142.            controllers.  Because of optional feature offerings it can also be
  143.            configured as an independent workstation, a file or communications
  144.            server or a distributed system.
  145.            USER PRODUCTIVITY
  146.            The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series supports AIXwindows
  147.            Environment/6000, based on the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of
  148.            Technology) X window System, and includes a graphical user interface
  149.            based on OSF/Motif (2).  OSF/Motif use can save time/money in
  150.            end-user training and application development.  Additionally, savings
  151.            in hardware may be realized through the use of LAN-attached
  152.            Xstations, to reduce cost per seat.
  153.                   AIXwindows Environment/6000, based on the versatile OSF/Motif
  154.            graphics user interface, provides the user with icons to represent
  155.            files, printers and system objects, and allows the user to manipulate
  156.            the file system through the icons.  Support for InfoExplorer (TM),
  157.            the online documentation aid, offers the user flexible access to
  158.            online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points, and
  159.            search features.  These features allow users to participate quickly,
  160.            minimizing training time and cost.

  162.            GROWTH ENABLEMENT
  163.            The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series is designed to grow with your
  164.            requirements.  Memory can be increased to a maximum of 256MB.  A
  165.            maximum of seven SCSI devices (including optional internal fixed disk
  166.            drive) can be attached.
  167.                   The integrated SCSI-2 controller attaches up to seven SCSI
  168.            devices.  One internal disk drive may be installed in the
  169.            POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series.  A 200MB, 540MB, 1GB or 2GB
  170.            drive can be installed.  Additional external devices may be attached,
  171.            or by using Differential High-Performance External I/O Controllers
  172.            (#2420) and external DASD Expansion Units, up to 30GB of total disk
  173.            storage may be configured.  The integrated Ethernet controller and
  174.            the PowerPC 601 local processor bus slot for graphics adapters allow
  175.            the user to have a LAN attachment and additional I/O devices and
  176.            graphics without utilizing any of the Micro Channel slots.
  177.                   Two Micro Channel feature card slots (form factor 3) are
  178.            available for additional features such as a token-ring adapter,
  179.            communications processors and high-performance 3D graphics
  180.            processors.
  181.            SYSTEM MANAGEMENT
  182.            A system installation and management facility is provided as part of
  183.            the operating system.  The System Management Interface Tool (SMIT)
  184.            facilitates the performance of system management tasks, such as
  185.            software installation and configuration, device configuration and
  186.            management, problem determination and storage management.  Support is
  187.            also provided for the use of an ASCII terminal as the system console
  188.            as well as remote installation of the system on a LAN.
  189.                   AIX/6000 is designed to meet the National Computer Security
  190.            Center (NCSC) trusted computer system evaluation criteria class C2
  191.            security support requirements.
  192.            THE POWERSTATION/POWERSERVER 250 SERIES STANDARD FEATURES
  193.            BASE MODEL CONFIGURATION 250
  194.            The entry POWERstation/POWERserver 250 can function without a fixed
  195.            disk in a LAN environment or, with a fixed disk and diskette drive
  196.            added, in a stand-alone environment.  Customers can upgrade memory
  197.            and add features to enhance the system.
  198.                   The standard features of the POWERstation/POWERserver 250 are:
  199.            o   66MHz PowerPC 601 processor
  200.            o   Eight slots for SIMM memory cards
  201.            o   16MB memory (four 4MB SIMM memory cards that use the first four
  202.                of eight available slots)

  218.                       This requires only four memory slots, up to 128MB may be
  219.                added in the other four slots for a maximum of 256MB.
  220.            NOTE: Standard with the POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series is the
  221.            ability to attach the Ethernet controller to either Thick or Twisted
  222.            Pair Ethernet media.  For connection to Thick (10 Base 5) Ethernet
  223.            media, the output connector is a Thick 15-pin D-shell "slide-latch"
  224.            type that is compatible with IEEE 802.3 section 7.6.  For connection
  225.            to Twisted Pair (10 Base T) Ethernet media, use the additional
  226.            converter that is shipped standard with the POWERstation/POWERserver
  227.            250 series.  For connection to Thin (10 Base 2) Ethernet media, use
  228.            an optional external Transceiver (#4223).
  229.            PRECONFIGURED MODELS
  230.            Three specially-priced preconfigured models are available, by
  231.            ordering the standard model configurations:  the POWERstation 25T and
  232.            25W and POWERserver 25S.
  233.            POWERSTATION 25T:  The graphics workstation can operate in a LAN
  234.            environment or, with a diskette drive, in a stand-alone environment.
  235.            Customers can upgrade memory, disk capacity and graphics.
  236.                   This model is appropriate for desktop publishing, CASE, 2D
  237.            CAD, Electrical Design Automation, student workstations, or other
  238.            environments where enhanced 2D graphics performance and low-cost RISC
  239.            workstations are appropriate.  With soft 3D capability,
  240.            cost-effective entry 3D performance is provided.  With optional 3D
  241.            graphics adapters, higher level 3D performance may be obtained.
  242.                   These are the standard features for the POWERstation 25T:

  278.            MODEL CONVERSIONS
  279.            A field-installable model conversion is offered to convert installed
  280.            POWERstation/POWERserver 220 series and POWERstation/POWERserver 230
  281.            series models to the POWERstation/POWERserver 25E.  All of the memory
  282.            SIMMs, fixed disk and media devices, as well as most features, may be
  283.            retained for use on the converted system, with the exception of the
  284.            POWER Gt1 (TM), POWER GT1b and POWER Gt1x Graphics Adapters.  A
  285.            customer's investment in installed 7011 systems is protected with
  286.            this 25E model conversion.
  287.            GXT100 AND GXT150 GRAPHICS ADAPTERS
  288.            These graphics adapters are designed for superior 2D performance in
  289.            an AIXwindows 2D environment.  When used in conjunction with the
  290.            AIXwindows 3D feature and Softgraphics they will provide
  291.            cost-effective 3D performance.  This is made possible through a
  292.            design which interfaces video memory and a unique graphics
  293.            accelerator chip directly to the PowerPC 601 local processor bus.
  294.                   The POWER GXT100 graphics adapter is an entry level adapter
  295.            for 1024 x 768 resolution graphics, while the POWER GXT150 graphics
  296.            adapter has added VRAM and provides 1280 x 1024, 1152 x 900 and 1024
  297.            x 768 resolution support, multiple color palettes and hardware window
  298.            support.
  299.                   Both graphics adapters are 8-bit single buffer, 256 color,
  300.            graphics adapters that attach directly to the PowerPC 601 processor
  301.            bus and do not require a Micro Channel slot.  Each requires
  302.            AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version  1.2.5 2D (support for X11R5) or
  303.            later and AIX (R) Version 3.2.5 for RISC System/6000.

  325.            ADDITIONAL PRODUCT INFORMATION
  326.            A cable is announced to provide for attaching a SUN display to any
  327.            RISC System 7011 machine type model.  This cable provides for 1152 x
  328.            900 resolution support used by SUN displays.
  329.                   In addition, the POWERstation 23T is revised to include the
  330.            POWERdisplay 17 as a standard feature of the base configuration.
  331.            This display is a replacement for the display presently offered as
  332.            standard on this model.  The POWERdisplay 17 is also offered on the
  333.            POWERstation/POWERserver 230, POWERstation 23W and POWERserver 23S as
  334.            an optional feature.
  335.            PRODUCT POSITIONING
  336.            While offering significant performance improvements over rival
  337.            products, the POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series provides a
  338.            high-performance, cost-effective workstation solution for
  339.            applications such as software development, technical publishing and
  340.            CAD.  It works in stand-alone or LAN-based configurations.  This
  341.            PowerPC-based system can also be used as a low-cost server for ASCII
  342.            terminal networks to applications such as retail, branch banking,
  343.            wholesale and plant floor.
  344.                   The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series offers binary
  345.            compatibility with the RISC System/6000 family of systems, providing
  346.            investment protection and scalability.  AIX/6000 provides a robust,
  347.            stable and common environment for RISC System/6000 clients and
  348.            servers today.  As customer requirements and technology evolve into
  349.            areas such as next-generation multimedia data base applications,
  350.            POWERstation 250s have the performance to adapt with customer
  351.            requirements.
  352.                   With either the GXT100 or GXT150 graphics adapters, the
  353.            workstation models are ideally suited to environments where high
  354.            performance and low cost-per-seat are important.  By adding the
  355.            AIXwindows 3D feature with Softgraphics, this product provides
  356.            effective price/performance solutions for some 3D applications.

  360.                   The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series provides a tremendous
  361.            amount of computing power in a compact package.  Compute performance
  362.            is greater than several other RISC System/6000 desktop and deskside
  363.            units.  Customers will need to evaluate the tradeoffs between compute
  364.            performance, price and I/O expansion capability.  For some uses such
  365.            as file servers, customers will be better served by selecting a
  366.            deskside system because of greater I/O expansion capabilities.

  464.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  Requirements for operating the
  465.            POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series:
  466.            o   A RISC System/6000-supported ASCII terminal or a
  467.                POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series-supported display, display

  469.            o   For installation and support of diskless or dataless

  508.                   AIX/6000 applications written for POWER-based RISC
  509.            System/6000s will run on the new POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series
  510.            without recompilation.  (The only exception to this statement would
  511.            be applications written using kernel extensions which use certain
  512.            privileged Assembler instructions.  IBM is not aware of any
  513.            applications using these instructions.)  Additional performance can
  514.            be achieved by recompiling with the latest versions of the IBM XL
  515.            compilers to further exploit the PowerPC technology.
  516.                   Applications compiled using a compiler option to exploit the
  517.            PowerPC technology may not function properly on systems that do not
  518.            employ that technology.  Customers with any combination of POWER-,
  519.            POWER2 (TM)- and PowerPC 601-based systems may continue to run their
  520.            applications unmodified.  New applications and recompilation of
  521.            existing applications for use in a mixed processor environment should
  522.            be compiled using the POWER or common mode options available in the
  523.            new XL compilers or any other compilers that support those options.
  524.            PLANNING INFORMATION
  525.            CABLE ORDERS:  No additional cables required with the base machine.
  526.            MEMORY CONFIGURATIONS:  Exceptional performance is achieved on the
  527.            POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series while using industry-standard
  528.            memory SIMM devices.  This exceptional performance is accomplished by
  529.            interleaving memory access across two banks of double-word wide
  530.            memory.  This means that memory is addressed in groups of four SIMM
  531.            devices.  Because of this new use of memory, the
  532.            POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series requires that memory SIMMs are
  533.            installed in groups of four.  The same size SIMM must be used in each
  534.            group of four SIMMs.
  535.            MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS FOR MODEL UPGRADES:  Due to the new use of
  536.            memory described in "Memory Configurations" for the
  537.            POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series, consideration needs to be made
  538.            for upgrades from a 220 or 230 with regard to memory SIMMs.  Since
  539.            these previous models addressed memory in pairs, rather than fours,
  540.            an upgrade may require the purchase of additional memory SIMMs to
  541.            complete a group of four SIMMs.
  542.            CABLES REQUIRED FOR USE WITH IBM DISPLAYS:  The appropriate IBM cable
  543.            feature code should be ordered when attaching displays to the POWER
  544.            GXT100 graphics adapter or POWER GXT150 graphics adapter.  Refer to
