demanding 3D applications are enabled. POWERstation 25S, with its
standard 1GB disk drive and 8-port adapter, is a cost-effective entry
server for retail, branch banking, wholesale and plant floor
applications. Memory capacity of up to 256MB and internal fixed disk
capacity of up to 2GB, coupled with a variety of input/output
devices, graphics, and communications features, are available to
configure the system as a powerful, entry POWERstation or POWERserver
for a wide range of business solutions.
The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series desktop workstations
utilize IBM's PowerPC Architecture and are binary compatible with the
IBM RISC System/6000 POWERstation/POWERserver family of systems, with
application portability and high throughput levels. All AIX/6000
applications written for POWER-based RISC System/6000s (models
available before September 21, 1993) will run on the PowerPC
601-based RISC System/6000s without recompilation. (The only
exception to this statement would be applications written using
kernel extensions which use certain privileged Assembler
instructions. IBM is not aware of any applications using these
instructions.) The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series with AIX/6000
Version 3.2.5, conforms to many industry standards in the open system
environment -- a key factor to enable customers to develop and port
applications.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series, with AIX/6000 3.2.5, offers
interoperability with other IBM and other vendor host systems,
expands the usefulness of those systems and maximizes the utility of
the 250 series. Any POWERstation/POWERserver 220 or 230 series
machine can be upgraded to a 25E. The POWERstation/POWERserver 250
series, with PowerPC 601 processor offers competitive fixed-point
processing and floating-point processing for the entry workstation
market. The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series can be configured as
a diskless or dataless system with integrated SCSI-2 and Ethernet
controllers. Because of optional feature offerings it can also be
configured as an independent workstation, a file or communications
server or a distributed system.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series supports AIXwindows
Environment/6000, based on the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of
Technology) X window System, and includes a graphical user interface
based on OSF/Motif (2). OSF/Motif use can save time/money in
end-user training and application development. Additionally, savings
in hardware may be realized through the use of LAN-attached
Xstations, to reduce cost per seat.
AIXwindows Environment/6000, based on the versatile OSF/Motif
graphics user interface, provides the user with icons to represent
files, printers and system objects, and allows the user to manipulate
the file system through the icons. Support for InfoExplorer (TM),
the online documentation aid, offers the user flexible access to
online documentation using task index, hypertext jump points, and
search features. These features allow users to participate quickly,
minimizing training time and cost.

terminal networks to applications such as retail, branch banking,
wholesale and plant floor.
The POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series offers binary
compatibility with the RISC System/6000 family of systems, providing
investment protection and scalability. AIX/6000 provides a robust,
stable and common environment for RISC System/6000 clients and
servers today. As customer requirements and technology evolve into
areas such as next-generation multimedia data base applications,
POWERstation 250s have the performance to adapt with customer
requirements.
With either the GXT100 or GXT150 graphics adapters, the
workstation models are ideally suited to environments where high
performance and low cost-per-seat are important. By adding the
AIXwindows 3D feature with Softgraphics, this product provides

MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: Requirements for operating the
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series:
o A RISC System/6000-supported ASCII terminal or a
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series-supported display, display
adapter and keyboard.
o For installation and support of diskless or dataless
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series systems, the network to which
the system is attached must contain at least one IBM RISC
System/6000 system that has a 3.5-inch diskette drive.
Diagnostics are run off the host if the POWERstation/POWERserver
250 series is attached to a network as a client. In addition,
that IBM RISC System/6000 must have AIX/6000 3.2.5, at the
current level, installed and operational. LAN-dependent systems
do not require the optional diskette drive (#2610).
o Diskless systems must be connected to the boot server using
either the integrated Ethernet controller or a Token-Ring Adapter
(#2970). LAN-dependent machines with disk drives may be
connected to the boot server with the above or with an Ethernet
Adapter (#2980).
o For stand-alone configurations, a disk drive and diskette drive
are required. Diagnostics must be run from a diskette drive or
disk drive for stand-alone systems.
NOTE: An external media unit is recommended to support software
distribution in stand-alone environments.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: Requirements of the
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series: AIX Version 3.2.5 for RISC
System/6000, at the level, including any updates, current at the time
the POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series is available, is required for
operating the POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series.
Small disk configurations (200MB) may be dependent on a LAN
connection, based on the fixed-disk storage requirement of the
specific software selected. Refer to "Software Offerings" in the IBM
RISC SYSTEM/6000 SYSTEM OVERVIEW, (GC23-2406) for assistance in
planning fixed-disk requirements.
Programming Requirements of POWER GXT100 graphics adapter and
POWER GXT150 graphics adapter, POWER GT4e and GTO Accelerator: AIX
Version 3.2.5 for RISC System/6000, at the level, including any
updates, that is current at the time the POWERstation/POWERserver 250
series is available. Also, AIXwindows Environment/6000 Version 1.2.5
(support for X11R5) or higher is required for installation of these
graphics adapters. For customers requiring 3D capability on a "2D"
graphics adapter, the AIXwindows/3D feature is required. Refer to
Software Announcement 293-489, dated September 21, 1993, for specific
programming requirements.
AIX/6000 applications written for POWER-based RISC
System/6000s will run on the new POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series
without recompilation. (The only exception to this statement would
be applications written using kernel extensions which use certain
privileged Assembler instructions. IBM is not aware of any
applications using these instructions.) Additional performance can
be achieved by recompiling with the latest versions of the IBM XL
compilers to further exploit the PowerPC technology.
Applications compiled using a compiler option to exploit the
PowerPC technology may not function properly on systems that do not
employ that technology. Customers with any combination of POWER-,
POWER2 (TM)- and PowerPC 601-based systems may continue to run their
applications unmodified. New applications and recompilation of
existing applications for use in a mixed processor environment should
be compiled using the POWER or common mode options available in the
new XL compilers or any other compilers that support those options.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CABLE ORDERS: No additional cables required with the base machine.
MEMORY CONFIGURATIONS: Exceptional performance is achieved on the
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series while using industry-standard
memory SIMM devices. This exceptional performance is accomplished by
interleaving memory access across two banks of double-word wide
memory. This means that memory is addressed in groups of four SIMM
devices. Because of this new use of memory, the
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series requires that memory SIMMs are
installed in groups of four. The same size SIMM must be used in each
group of four SIMMs.
MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS FOR MODEL UPGRADES: Due to the new use of
memory described in "Memory Configurations" for the
POWERstation/POWERserver 250 series, consideration needs to be made
for upgrades from a 220 or 230 with regard to memory SIMMs. Since
these previous models addressed memory in pairs, rather than fours,
an upgrade may require the purchase of additional memory SIMMs to
complete a group of four SIMMs.
CABLES REQUIRED FOR USE WITH IBM DISPLAYS: The appropriate IBM cable
feature code should be ordered when attaching displays to the POWER
GXT100 graphics adapter or POWER GXT150 graphics adapter. Refer to
the following table to determine the appropriate IBM cable feature
code to order. Interlaced display modes are not supported by these
graphics adapters. Note that the GXT100 graphics adapter supports
the 1024 x 768 resolution only.
