  4. ABSTRACT          The following software applications take advantage of the
  5.            advanced features of OS/2 (R) 2.1 and have the same functions
  6.            currently available on the PS/2 Server 195/295 under OS/2 1.3.  These
  7.            applications, when ordered in conjunction with a PS/2 (R) Server 195
  8.            (8600-003) or PS/2 Server 295 (8600-001, 002), can be preloaded and
  9.            shipped with the system.

  13.                   Customers who have previously licensed the OS/2 1.3 version of
  14.            these products will be given the opportunity to upgrade to the
  15.            OS/2 2.1 versions, at no charge.  OS/2 2.1 is licensed separately.
  16.                   MASS/2 provides comprehensive system management capabilities,
  17.            allowing network control from local or remote locations.  In
  18.            addition, MASS/2 has extensive error logging and recovery techniques
  19.            designed to overcome most hardware and software failures.
  20.                   IBM MP/2 provides the multiprocessing capability to the PS/2
  21.            Server 195 or 295, giving the highest levels of performance for
  22.            today's advanced client or file server applications.
  23.                   IBM Disk Array/2 provides RAID-5 level of disk array data
  24.            integrity.  In addition, the Disk Array/2 application offers
  25.            protection from failure of the small computer system interface (SCSI)
  26.            controller or bus.  The Disk Array/2 also offers high-performance and
  27.            large-capacity disk storage ideal for mission-critical applications.

  69. OVERVIEW   DESCRIPTION
  70.            USER PRODUCTIVITY
  71.            The IBM Maximum Availability and Support System/2, IBM Multi
  72.            Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2
  73.            applications provide important functions key to improving user
  74.            productivity.
  75.                   All three applications now run under OS/2 1.3, OS/2 2.1 and
  76.            NetWare 3.11 and follow the SAA (TM)/SNA guidelines, which ensure a
  77.            consistent interface and higher productivity.
  78.            IBM MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT SYSTEM/2:  MASS/2, a software
  79.            application working with the Remote Maintenance Processor (RMP) --
  80.            standard on the PS/2 Server 295, required on the PS/2 Server 195 --
  81.            provides a graphical interface for managing functions, such as
  82.            automatic reboot and reconfiguration, comprehensive error logging,
  83.            selective error notification including dial-out capability, fail-safe
  84.            access in case of power outage, remote power cycling and system
  85.            configuration, warning alarms, user and administrative password
  86.            security, and remote console capabilities.
  87.            ADVANTAGES FOR REMOTE USERS AND SYSTEM ADMINISTRATORS:  The PS/2
  88.            Server 195/295 with MASS/2 provides the capability to monitor, tune
  89.            and control the PS/2 Server from local or remote locations.  MASS/2
  90.            also allows the PS/2 Server to recover from hardware failures, such
  91.            as disk drives, SCSI controllers and memory and continue to run
  92.            without human intervention.
  93.                   With MASS/2, the PS/2 Server 195/295 can be geographically
  94.            distributed across large organizations, while retaining the ability
  95.            to be managed in a centralized support location.  MASS/2 provides
  96.            continual monitoring of resources and system critical parameters.  In
  97.            addition, remote power cycling and system configuration control, as
  98.            well as alarm parameters, are all possible with the comprehensive
  99.            system management capabilities.
  100.                   MASS/2 features are available from the system console, from
  101.            any PC on the network, or by modem from anywhere in the world.  With
  102.            MASS/2, LAN networks can be easily managed whether local or thousands
  103.            of miles away.
  104.            MESSAGES, STATISTICS AND LOGS:  Warning parameters for the system can
  105.            be set with MASS/2.  Once set, the system automatically sends warning
  106.            alerts to users, dials out to remote administrators, or shuts down if
  107.            operational limits such as temperature reach unacceptable limits.
  108.                   The MASS/2 information is displayed logically and more detail
  109.            is available with the click of a mouse.  The systems operational
  110.            statistics, such as CPUs, memory, disk utilization and even text
  111.            displayed on the remote server LCD panel, are available in real time.
  112.            MASS/2 displays a record of the last 60 minutes for each statistic.
  113.            The statistics are stored to disk for long-term storage and analyses.
  114.                   MASS/2 records all hardware failures, network errors and other
  115.            critical events.  These are maintained in a non-volatile log easily
  116.            accessed for review.  Because the RMP is battery-backed, the log can
  117.            always be accessed even if the server is not operating.
  118.            SYSTEM RECOVERY:  With MASS/2, the PS/2 Server 195/295 can recover
  119.            from failures quickly and easily without human intervention.  If a
  120.            hardware failure occurs, diagnostics resident in the server identify
  121.            the faulty component and isolate it from the rest of the system.  In
  122.            the case of a software timeout, the server detects errors through a
  123.            series of security timers.  In the case of combined hardware and
  124.            software errors, the system reboots and reconfigures.  After reboot,
  125.            all applications are automatically restarted.
  126.                   The PS/2 Server 195/295 with RMP and MASS/2 provide the system
  127.            administrator with very high levels of management control and assure
  128.            clients that system availability will be maximized.
  129.            IBM MULTI PROCESSING EXTENSIONS/2:  MP/2 provides software support
  130.            for multiprocessing on the PS/2 Server 195/295.  This allows higher
  131.            levels of performance and redundancy, both of which are required to
  132.            deliver the functions and high availability demanded in the
  133.            customer's mission-critical applications.
  134.            IBM ORTHOGONAL RAID-5 DISK ARRAY/2:  Disk Array/2 is a unique
  135.            software application that provides the highest levels of RAID-5 data
  136.            protection and protects the customer's critical data from hardware
  137.            failures of the entire SCSI subsystem.  This additional protection,
  138.            called Orthogonal, provides higher levels of availability and
  139.            reliability than traditional RAID-5 implementations.

  141.            INVESTMENT PROTECTION
  142.            The IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk
  143.            Array/2 applications protect the customer's investment in hardware,
  144.            software and vital company records.
  145.                   The hardware investment is protected since both of these
  146.            applications allow the customer to migrate to higher levels of
  147.            performance and capacity by simply upgrading an existing system.
  148.            Multi Processing and Orthogonal RAID-5 enable growth paths that
  149.            significantly improve performance and system capacity and provide
  150.            fault-tolerant functions that protect the customer's investment in
  151.            software and intellectual property.
  152.                   With IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2, the total system
  153.            capacity of 28GB can be utilized.  The capability to have online
  154.            spares and "hot plugging" disk drives, combined with the ability to
  155.            rebuild the disk array without interruption to client services,
  156.            results in high performance and high availability in a system that
  157.            can expand to meet the customer's needs.
  158.            PRODUCT POSITIONING
  159.            IBM Maximum Availability and Support System/2 is an integral part of
  160.            the PS/2 Server 295 system concept and is available as an upgrade on
  161.            the PS/2 Server 195.  This system management software provides system
  162.            administrators with a sophisticated tool to manage large
  163.            geographically disperse networks, and in conjunction with IBM Multi
  164.            Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2,
  165.            provides innovative functions for high-end, mission-critical
  166.            installations.  In addition, MASS/2 can be launched through LAN
  167.            NetView (R) and will continue to exploit additional LAN NetView
  168.            facilities.
  169.                   IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 provides higher levels of
  170.            system performance by enabling multiprocessing in the PS/2 Server 195
  171.            and 295.  Customers who require the highest levels of performance in
  172.            mission-critical applications can reach the goals using this
  173.            application.  Also, since the application is designed to run in
  174.            conjunction with the MASS/2 software, customers are able to retain
  175.            comprehensive system management capabilities essential to large
  176.            distributed networks.
  177.                   IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 provides large-capacity,
  178.            high-performance disk arrays required in large database or file
  179.            server applications.  In addition, data integrity is maintained with
  180.            the fully integrated RAID-5 technology.  This protects the customer's
  181.            data and allows for continued operation of the LAN, even while the
  182.            array is being reconfigured.
  183.                   Because IBM Orthogonal RAID-5 Disk Array/2 is integrated with
  184.            MASS/2, most error recoveries are accomplished without human
  185.            intervention or loss of services to clients.

  244.            SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
  245.                   The IBM Multi Processing Extensions/2 and IBM Orthogonal
  246.            RAID-5 Disk Array/2 use the security and auditability features of
  247.            OS/2 or NetWare.  MASS/2 has additional password security for
  248.            administrators and clients.
  249.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
  250.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
  251.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication
  252.            facilities.
  253. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION
  254.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted now.
  255.                   Orders entered with a hardware order for the 8600 will be
  256.            assigned the same shipment date as the hardware order.  If preload is
  257.            desired, specify codes must be used on the 8600 order.
  258.                   Independent orders will be scheduled for shipment in AAS on
  259.            the Friday following the week of order entry, or as soon as supply
  260.            permits.  No hardware specify codes are required for independent
  261.            orders.
  262.            OS/2 1.3 TO OS/2 2.1 UPGRADE
  263.            Customers who have previously licensed the OS/2 1.3 version of these
  264.            products will be given the opportunity to upgrade to the OS/2 2.1
  265.            versions, at no charge.
  266.                   A customer response card will be mailed to customers who
  267.            licensed the OS/2 1.3 versions of these products.  Upon receipt of
  268.            the returned card, IBM will mail the OS/2 2.1 version of the
  269.            diskettes to the customer.  Customers who choose to upgrade to the
  270.            OS/2 2.1 versions will receive future updates for the OS/2 2.1
  271.            version only.  Customers who choose to stay on the OS/2 1.3 base will
  272.            receive future updates for the OS/2 1.3 version only.
  273.                   New customer orders for OS/2 1.3 versions of this software
  274.            with delivery requested after August 20, 1993, will not be eligible
  275.            for no-charge upgrades.
  276.                   Customers are responsible for obtaining the OS/2 2.1 operating
  277.            system license.
