  74. For those who don't know, DSTswitch is a utility that automatically
  75. adjusts the system time from standard time to daylight saving time
  76. and vice versa. Of course, that's not all!

  250. at user-set intervals. You can configure each image file such as

  252. SIZED or NORMAL during configuration. The Wall writes an extended
  253. attribute for each and displays the .BMP as configured.

  341. The main feature planned for the November meeting will be a
  342. presentation & demonstration of the full-featured ProNews/2
  343. OS/2 news reader program by SIG member Jim Nuytens.

  345. Pronews/2 is a top rated OS/2 News client with many features that
  346. are lacking in other OS/2 news readers. Many users regard this
  347. unique newsreader as the best available, bar none. Key features
  348. include a process manager that gives the user complete control
  349. over queued tasks (such as downloading articles), true message
  350. threading and fully customizable toolbars. It also includes an
  351. advanced filtering and thread-watching mechanism that can work
  352. on a group-by-group or global basis. The user interface is based

  469. Randomizer is a sort of universal random item selector.  The user sets
  470. up the fields from which to choose items and then populates those
  471. fields.  Randomizer then selects one item from each field and displays
  472. the list of its choices. There is no set list of either fields or
  473. items, so you could use this program for anything from picking numbers
  474. randomly from a given pool or creating entire random characters for a
  475. novel you're writing (which happens to be one use of mine).
  476.  
  477. There may be other uses for Randomizer, especially if you call it from
  478. another REXX program or script.  The possibilities are (nearly) endless
  479. and entirely up to you.

  640. For those who have experienced slow screen updates on Netscape Communicator, 
  641. i.e. no modem activity, disk light flashing, etc., here is a tip:
  642.  
  643.   Set the memory cache to a large value (e.g. 20 or 40 Mb) and leave
  644.   the disk cache low (e.g. 1 Mb). This way, the OS/2 virtual memory
  645.   system handles the caching to disk, which is a lot faster than
  646.   Netscape's caching. Also, you don't get those long cache cleanups
  647.   with large caches and many many small files.
  648.  
  649. As always, your mileage may vary. Your best settings will depend on
  650. how much RAM your system has.

  681. Acrobat Distiller 3.02!

  683. I typed 'PE ACRODIST' and the Distiller window showed up. I loaded a
  684. Postscript file and converted it to PDF in OS/2!

  686. Odin is the name of the project and software that allows users to run
  687. Win32 (Windows 95 and Windows NT) applications in OS/2 Warp natively,
  688. almost as if they were intended to be OS/2 applications in the first
  689. place. It also makes porting from Win32 to OS/2 easier by providing
  690. Win32 API implementation in OS/2: the Odin32 API.

  1061.  
  1062. Randomizer is a sort of universal random item selector. The user sets
  1063. up the fields from which to choose items and then populates those
  1064. fields. Randomizer then selects one item from each field and displays
  1065. the list of its choices. There is no set list of either fields or
  1066. items, so you could use this program for anything from picking
  1067. numbers randomly from a given pool or creating entire random
  1068. characters for a novel you're writing (which happens to be one use of
  1069. mine).
  1070.  
  1071. There may be other uses for Randomizer, especially if you call it
  1072. from another REXX program or script. The possibilities are (nearly)
  1073. endless and entirely up to you.

  1152. products are mostly forgotten now. They are no longer interested in
  1153. continuing development, and they gave me the sources, which I'm now

  1162. The first program is PageMage, a very good and very promising (at the
  1163. time of its demise) virtual desktop program. At the time of its
  1164. demise, PageMage was at the fourth beta, quite useful and quite

  1168. The second program is WPSBackup, a very good program to archive you
  1169. OS/2 Desktop. WPSBackup was a shareware program, but I'll donate the

  1172. WPSBackup is works well with many Warp 4  installations, but in some
  1173. cases it fails reporting a failure in copying OS2.INI. The real error
  1174. message is "Failed to enumerate  keys for
  1175. appl:PM_Workplace:Location". Since WPSBackup is a good and snappy
  1176. tool (had to recover my Desktop a couple times: it worked  very
  1177. well), I'd love to see it revamped.
  1178.  
  1179. Both the authors of Pagemage and WPSBackup ask that they're
  1180. remembered in the docs of the new (eventual) application, and that 
  1181. they're not held responsible for what people may do with their
  1182. sources.

  1440. ( http://www.metabox.de/ ) a "WebTV" that runs OS/2.
  1441. "the box uses Embedded OS/2 Warp 4, FP10, the latest IP 
  1442. stack, Netscape 4.61, Java 1.1.8 and a lot of special 
  1443. applications. It is meant for usage with any TV and allows 
  1444. you to browse the internet with all features like Java, 
  1445. JavaScript, SSL, Certificates... 
  1446.  
  1447. The unique feature is BOT, a technology to receive a 
  1448. constant 70kpbs data stream of the standard PAL signal 
  1449. without harming the visible and audible TV signal. This is 
  1450. mainly interesting in countries like Germany where phone 
  1451. connections are still paid per minute and considerably

  1747. After receiving several requests to do so, we've asked the whiz
  1748. behind SCOUG's Warp Expo West marketing effort to explain how he
  1749. successfully marketed the event.

  1751. Everything Peter Skye prepared for marketing our successful OS/2
  1752. event this year had a pre-planned strategy and reason. Peter will let
  1753. us in on his secrets at the next SCOUG general meeting. This will be
  1754. an important presentation for all SCOUG vendors, developers, and even
  1755. plain old members since Peter's techniques are key to the success of
  1756. any event or product. Peter's tricks can be translated into just
  1757. about anything.
  1758.  
  1759. And of course, Peter is always entertaining, so those who just like
  1760. to watch Peter in action will be in for a treat.
  1761.  
  1762. After the presentation we'll have Q&A to get your computer problems
  1763. resolved. Then a raffle and the Saturday SIG meetings:

  1793. exit NW of the I-405/Hwy 55 interchange). Turn right on Anton Blvd
  1794. (the first signal north of I-405). Go east 2 signals and turn right
  1795. (you will see a TGI Fridays' on your right, where our after-meeting
  1796. lunch will be at). Park in the open-air lot to your left. Plaza Tower
  1797. is on a diagonal from the open-air parking lot.

  1802. The Eastside Christian School, Heritage Campus, is at 2530 W. La

  1805. Church. There is a 2-story office building close to La Palma Ave.
  1806. with the address of 2528 up near the roof. Turn in (south) there.
  1807. Drive all the way to the back and park along the chain-link fence.

  1809. NOTE: There is a lot of freeway construction north of the school on
  1810. I-5 and the 91 freeways; some on/off ramps may be closed and/or have
  1811. detours. Check the SCOUG web site for updates, and leave yourself
  1812. plenty of time to find our SIG meeting location.

  1848. Warpstock 2000 bid proposal form:
  1849.

  1852. *Dates:
  1853. December 1, 1999 is the date that interested teams should declare
  1854. their interest in bidding on hosting Warpstock 2K. It is not the date
  1855. the bids are due.
  1856.  
  1857. December 15, 1999 is the date that final bid proposals are due.
  1858.  
  1859. January 1, 2000 is the date the host team will be announced.
  1860.  
  1861. *Facilities:
  1862. Much of the time required to prepare a bid proposal in years past has
  1863. been spent in detailing the facilities. This has now changed so that
  1864. a bidding team may propose more than one site, and much less detail
  1865. on the site is required. This should reduce the time required to
  1866. prepare a bid considerably. We ask that the team include general
  1867. descriptions of all of the proposed sites and any additional
  1868. information they can provide, but considerably less detail is
  1869. expected than in years past. 
  1870.  
  1871. *Host team selection process:
  1872. Warpstock will use the following selection process when choosing the 
  1873. host team. This process is designed to minimize the effects of any
  1874. one site being favored by a board member(s).  
  1875.  
  1876. Voting on a host team's bid proposal is broken into the following
  1877. catagories:
  1878. A: Staff - This is the ranking of the proposed staffing for the show.
  1879.    The bid form should describe each key position, who it will be
  1880.    filled by, and that persons qualifications.
  1881. B: Program - This ranking is based upon the described program. A good
  1882.    proposed program will include varied presentation tracks and
  1883.    additional functions that will attract interest from the largest
  1884.    group of potential attendees.
  1885. C: Budget - This ranking is applied to the proposed budget. We will
  1886.    be looking at attainable goals for attendance and reasonable
  1887.    estimates of costs.
  1888. D: Attendee Cost - The cost of attending the show, including
  1889.    admission, lodging, and travel.
  1890. E: General - Everything else. The team's experience, enthusiasm,
  1891.    interesting goals and proposals.
  1892.  
  1893. For anyone interested, the complete scoring proceedure will be posted
  1894. to the Warpstock web site.  
  1895.  
  1896. *Public location voting:
  1897. In the past, the host site for Warpstock was selected entirely by the
  1898. Warpstock board of directors. We feel that the people who will be 
  1899. attending the show should have a voice in the selection process. To 
  1900. that end, we will be offering the opportunity for anyone interested
  1901. to vote for the location of their choice. The public votes will be 
  1902. factored into the scoring system we use and will account for 1/6 of
  1903. the total score applied to each team. 
  1904.  
  1905. On December 20, 1999, a website form will be made available on the 
  1906. Warpstock web site. All of the proposed sites will be listed and
  1907. brief descriptions of each site will be included. If all of the
  1908. bidding parties agree, the complete bid document will be made
  1909. available. This form will be available through December 27, 1999. 
  1910.  
  1911. We will invite everyone interested to choose among the listed
  1912. locations their preference for Warpstock 2000. We will allow only one
  1913. entry per person and the total number of votes will be assigned a
  1914. ranking to be used in the selection equation. 
  1915.  
  1916. The Board of directors will have 25 points to vote with. The Public 
  1917. will have 5 points to vote with. The public vote will be determined
  1918. by a ranking system that will have a total of five points given to
  1919. the team that has the most votes and 4 points to the team that has
  1920. the second most votes, and so on. This works out to 1/6th of the
  1921. total vote, more than any individual board member.  
  1922.  
  1923. *Distribution of Event profits.
  1924. Warpstock, Inc. is not in business to make money. Our only mission is
  1925. to facilitate the production of the annual Warpstock event. The
  1926. posted bid document makes no mention of any distribution of profits
  1927. or losses incurred for the show. It is Warpstock's desire to at least
  1928. break even on the event, but we welcome a profit that will be applied
  1929. to the following year's show. If any team wishes to bid on hosting
  1930. the show with the intention of making a profit for the team,
  1931. Warpstock, Inc. wants to hear their proposal along with the teams who
  1932. have no interest in any financial rewards. Any User Groups that wish
  1933. to run the show as a money making event need only to include that
  1934. proposal in the bid they submit. Warpstock, Inc. will make no
  1935. selection preferences based upon such a desire from the host team. We
  1936. only want to choose the team that will provide the best show for the
  1937. community.

  2118. MAME stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator.  
  2119.  
  2120. It allows you to play up to 1858 classic, and some not-so-classic
  2121. arcade games (from the 70's through the 90's) from the comfort of
  2122. your OS/2 desktop.
  2123.  
  2124. The OS/2 version has been updated to the latest version of the MAME
  2125. core (.36 beta 9.1). If you are upgrading from beta 6 or higher, it
  2126. will automatically update your Quick List and scan for newly
  2127. supported games the first time you start it up so you don't have to
  2128. manually rescan everything from scratch and erase your Favorites
  2129. list.
  2130.  
  2131. Please know that I am still working on speedups, although this
  2132. release mainly updates the MAME core. I should have a new version of
  2133. GPMixer (the audio library used by MAME for OS/2) available soon
  2134. which should improve the speed of games with sound considerably.
