I recently acquired an AW230 card. There were no instructions
for OS/2 anywhere in the installation phamphlet or the CD that
came with it. On the AOpen site there is (supposedly) a driver
for OS/2. I downloaded it, and called AOpen tech support to
confirm that it was in fact an auto-unpack file (I don't like
clicking on .exe files without knowing what's going to happen).
But when I double click on the file, I get a very Win 3.1 looking
error box that says "Unexpected DOS error 23". Phone tech
support at AOpen said that I'd better contact Taiwan about it. I
sent an E-mail to AOpen in Taiwan about the problem about two
days ago, but have not yet received a response.

I'd suggest getting the drivers for the AW230 card from Cirrus Logic's
website.
The AW230 sound card uses a CS4280 chipset. You can download OS/2 drivers for
the card http://www.cirrus.com/drivers/audiodrv/os2.html

Just change .exe to .zip and you can view the contents with zipme or
something similar. I have used the AW35/AW37/Pro with no problems. In fact
the AOpen cards (Crystal chipsets) are my favorites. My new pet favorite
is the Aureal Vortex cards. There are OS/2 drivers for the AU8820 only.
Excellent sound for $19.00. The specs are superior to all Creative Live!
incarnations. Imagine that. I use line-out through a Crown tube amp/preamp
and it is totally silent. No hiss, no hum. Check it out side by side with
the Creative and the card with the superior sound quality is immediate
apparent.... Aureal. (The Aureal Vortex2 Super Quad PCI with real digital
output is only $48.00 at www.bunta.com) This is the spec card that the
Turtle Beach Quadzilla is based on. The $38.00 AU8830 Vortex2 is the spec
card for the Turtle Beach Montego II (and Diamond MX300) and has Quad
output too. The drivers are now OpenSource so I am sure new OS/2 drivers
should pop-up soon.

Aha! Thanks! I had looked at the cirrus site (I think) but I
didn't know the chipset designation. OTOH, there's a rather
large chip on the board with that letter combination on it, so I
guess I should have figured it out. :-(

The error means you tried to run a win9x/nt program in win31.
Try running UNZIP.EXE on it.

From: stefanj@gte.net (Jason Stefanovich)
We have received a new donation pledge of $10 from Zoltan Bokeny for
the MAMERun Joystick Device Driver Contest.
What is it?
Write your own joystick device driver for OS/2 and you could win a
Gravis Gamepad Pro + $30 and earn the respect and gratitude of OS/2
gamers around the world! With the many new games available and the
advance of game controllers there arises a need for a better
joystick device driver than IBM's advanced joystick device driver.
Support for new controller features, such as 8+ buttons, will greatly
enhance the OS/2 gaming experience for gamers as well as
developers.

Hi all
I am having some probs with zip, under Rexx, I am not sure if it's a bug
or just me
To Create a file I tried the following, to follow the directory
structure
'zip.exe -u -R tester.zip H:\games\*.*' /* does not work */
'zip.exe -u -r tester.zip H:\games' /* again just get directory
entries */
If you go Zip -h, it gives the -R' for recursion, but strangely '-r'
seems to do the trick, any ideas
'zip.exe -u -r tester.zip H:\games'

The -R is shown incorrectly for recursion in the usage help. So, you
are right, this does not work.
> 'zip.exe -u -r tester.zip H:\games' /* again just get directory

Here you only asked ZIP to zip the directory itself, no files are
specified. It will recurse through the directories saving directoy
names. As you noted. You are almost there, though:
zip -u -r tester.zip h:\games\*
I found the following command to be an excellent alternative to a
full backup program for making a snapshot of a disk:
zip -ruST9 x-drive x:\*
Capitalization is important. The "S" includes system info like hidden
files, EAs and ACLs. "T" to verify the archive. "9" for maximum
compression. It's fast to backup, and fast to restore needing only UNZIP
and a minimal system.

Actually you do not, it is only needed if you intend to use the
on-demand scanner thing. I myself have Antivirus 4 without SES installed.
If you want, you can get it from:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/
I can't remember exactly, I think in either the "tools" or "misc"
directory there should be a "warpses" directory, this contains the SES for
Warp 3 and Connect.

It's on the install disks for Warp 4 (Merlin)
Selective Install third dialog, "Optional System Components"
(under OpenDoc and VoiceType) it's "Security".
It's extra for Warp 3. I doubt it'll work with OS/2 2.x

Thanks for that.. it nice to have ones suspicions confirmed
Adrian Suri
ps
When I finally finish up-dating the program I make it available to all,
ie freeware. It's a front end to Tar and Gzip, and now unzip/zip
An older version which does not support zip is available from my site
under the download section, it written in Rexx using DrDialog, my next move
will be
to use zip or tar to create backups(disk copy for) Large floppies, available
from

Try setboot the one that comes with OS/2. Cheap and you can pick the next
partition from which to boot next from.

Subj: Backup software
From: John Mandeville <nospam@nospam.com>
I need backup software for the following machines. It would be best if
there is the software has both OS/2 and Windows versions that can read
each other's tapes.
1. A Tandberg SLR50 (QIC format, 25 GB uncompressed data, SCSI
interface) in a Warp 4 computer.
2. A Tanberg SLR5 (QIC format, 4 GB uncompressed data, SCSI interface)
in a Windows 95 computer.
3. An external HP/Colorado 4/8 GB Travan with a parallel port interface
to be used for laptops. Our current laptops are Windows 95, but we
expect to get at least one OS/2 laptop in the near future.
I currently use gtak/gtar to with the SLR5 on an OS/2 machine. The SLR5
is being moved to a Win95 machine and being replaced on the OS/2 machine
with the SLR50. We need software that is a more user-friendly (or, dare
I say it, idiot-friendly), especially for the Win95 machines.
My main two suspects at the moment are BackAgain/2 (and BackAgainII) and
NovaBack. I've tried given the demos a brief trial on the OS/2 machine;
I haven't tried either them on the Win95 machines yet. I had minor
difficulties with BackAgain/2 (1. I got a Drive Not Ready error every
time I opend the dialog which selects what stuff you want to back up
(IIRC, it was actually the Advanced button on a dialog.) I don't know
which drive it didn't like. Perhaps my CD-R??? 2. The long erase seemed
to hang. This is minor if it only occurs in the OS/2 version because I
can do erases easily enough with gtak.) NovaBack had no such gliches
but also didn't have any REXX exits which I would find useful. I
haven't figured out yet whether the Win95 BackAgainII has any scripting
exits. Neither program has a user interface as good as the sadly
departed DualStore, but both are useable even by Win95 folk. (Am I
showing a bit of OS bias here?)
I haven't tested yet whether either program can handle the parallel port
interface.
Any comments about these two programs? Any experience with technical
support from their respective companies? Any experience with using
these in a mixed OS/2 and Win95 environment? It is interesting that
CDS's (the BackAgain people) web site makes me a bit concern about their
continuing interest in OS/2 (nothing specific, just a general gestalt or
whatever), but that they have made an appearance at at least the last
two Warpstocks. I have no idea what to conclude from this.
Thanks in advance for any information.

That should read "on-access" scanner (the one that checks whenever you
access a file), the on-demand scanner (that you run, er, on-demand),
works fine without SES.

I suppose that the security enabling system (SES) isn't essential to run
McAfee Antivirus 4 on Warp 3, but it's nice to know its on IBM-Boulder under

I have never been very successful at making backups. It seems to me like a
very
obtuse proposition for an intermediate level windows user. I can pretty much
figure
things out, as I am not totally stupid, but backing up baffles me. I am sure
someone
here can identify with that. I bought a zip drive some time ago, before I
figured out
I should do more research as to whether it would serve my needs. Then I read
that
tape backup is still the way to go over all others. Unless of course you are
made of
money.
I dont even try to back up anything besides docs and favs anymore and I use
Nova disk
with my zip, which is sort of adequate. Now though, as I get more experience
and am
starting to do HTML and Java Script copying for a first web site, I would
really like
to be able to just back up the whole dang hard drive, as I am doing all my
studying on
line too from website tutorials. I will need good, included, easy to use
software
with the tape drive I choose. Currently I am considering a fairly priced
Iomega Ditto
Max 5/10GB. I have no idea how to connect this to my computer, but I have two
hd's a
cdrom and the internal zip, so I guess it would either have to be an adapter
off one
of my spare PCI or ISA slots? I only have one parallel port and have resolved
only to
use it with the printer only because I have real problems when I try to run a
scanner
in line with it.
I am really sorry about the long post. I have explained as best I could.
Hope there
is someone who can recommend what I should do. Please keep in mind that price
is a
dutiful consideration. I am trying to save myself the pain of finding out I
will have
to buy extra equipment after the purchase.
Thanks, Dusty

Have a look at Cristies PCBax (currently V2.3 for OS/2). Comes in
OS/2 and win32 flavours.
Works great, tech support is fast and good also. Updates are
forthcoming so development seems to be still going full steam.

I can only provide some very limited experience. I've been evaluating
NovaStor's backup software for several months and have just committed to
adopting it (for about four Warp 4 machines). Oddly enough, it was the
only OS/2 backup software that supports our tape drives (HP SureStore
T4i, which I would have thought was common enough).
I really like the ease of use: basically, once the backup procedure has
been configured to your liking, you just start the program and hit the "My
Backup" button. Overall, it is fast and user-friendly. Note that I have
not tried the scheduling feature as we only do manual backups on these
machines.
I only have two reservations about it. First, it requires that you run
the OS/2 'BACKACC' command in order to back up NET.ACC and NET.AUD, before
you run a tape backup. (Other tape software doesn't seem to require
this?) The main problem with this is that BACKACC.EXE is broken if UPM
fixpak IP08412 is applied (you can still back up the files manually if you
boot off diskette).
Second, on our machines the emergency boot diskettes - which are basically
copies of the Warp install diskettes with the NovaStor drivers added -
don't work (the restore utility either crashes or refuses to run. I don't
know if this is a hardware issue with our Compaqs). I had to use BOOTOS2
diskettes, which work fine.
NovaStor's e-mail tech support was quite helpful, although it was I who
eventually found the necessary workaround.
The user manual almost exclusively refers to the Windows version, with
only a few token references that the OS/2 version even exists. I found
this a little ominous, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

I use BA/2 to backup to disk on the system that has the tape drive and

I've been using the Expert Mouse for years.
At one point I installed something else apparently and the control panel

At that time they were providing support but, alas, their suggestions didn't

Fairly recently I had to reinstall OS/2 due to another issue and I reinstalled
the Kensington
software and it's working just perfectly now. While I can offer no

The scheduling in NovaBack either doesn't work properly or is so
anti-intuitive that it may as well not work - I never figured out which.
Also, I _think_ Novaback was the program that I looked at where command
line backups weren't possible - which, coupled with the problems that I
had with the schedule, was what put it out of the running (pardon the
pun).
I tried three or four backup packages before deciding on BA/2 - which
turned out (for me, YMMV) to be the only one that simply backed up the
drives without making me turn cartwheels.

What do you mean about the BA/2 Enterprise version "will support

I thought the only difference between this anbd the Professional version
is the the Enterprise version allows access to individual tapws in an
autoloader.
I use BA/2 Pro ver. 4.0i to backup all the machines on the network to a

Odd... I tested with the evaluation version of BA/2, and it refused to
recognize the tape drive. Same story with PC-bax and BackMaster.
Perhaps the Professional version supports more tape drives? (Seems silly,
if the Evaluation version is what people base their decisions on.)

If you regress to IP08406 (still Y2K compliant), BACKACC should work again.
I confirmed that others have experienced this by doing a search on Deja,
but there's no mention of it that I could find in IBM's APAR tracking
database. I'd love to report it, but I doubt my company would want to
fork out the money for such an easily-worked-around problem.

I seem to recall hearing rather loud complaints about BA/2 on these
newsgroups. In any case, NovaBACK's features are fine for my purposes,
so as long as they don't abruptly drop support, I'm relatively happy.
EMMV...

MAMERun Joystick Device Driver Contest.
What is it?
Write your own joystick device driver for OS/2 and you could win a
Gravis Gamepad Pro + $80 and earn the respect and gratitude of OS/2
gamers around the world! With the many new games available and the
advance of game controllers there arises a need for a better
joystick device driver than IBM's advanced joystick device driver.
Support for new controller features, such as 8+ buttons, will greatly
enhance the OS/2 gaming experience for gamers as well as
developers.

Subj: Memory Recovery Tool?
From: Felix Miata <bogus.due2UCE@atlantic.net>
When Netscape crashes, memory disappears, never to be restored to the
available pool without a reboot. I estimate this is somewhere around
5-10 Mb per crash, but it doesn't happen after every crash. It also
seems to happen just by using Netscape for more than a couple hours or
so without exiting and restarting it. Since I use it for news, mail and
browsing, this isn't so easy to remember to do. I reboot before swapper
growth is evident, usually when free RAM gets down below 30 Mb with
Netscape loaded. Swapper is set very small and I have 128 Mb RAM.
Is there some utility that will find zombie memory and make it available
again? I looked on Hobbes, but none of what I found seemed designed to
address this.

Subj: WipOut installation
From: l_luciano@da.mob (Stan Goodman)
I have downloaded WipeOut from Hobbes, and am trying to install it. The
file contains two directories, called disk1 and disk2, and I have copied
the content of each to a floppy disk. The installation process asks me for
a destination drive and directory, then tells me to insert disk 1 into
drive A:, which is where it already is -- else I wouldn't be in the
installation process.
Is this zip file (from Hobbes) known to be corrupt? Is there a way to
install this program?
For the record, I also downloaded the update patch, and will apply it once
the base program is installed.

Many thanks; I never would have tumbled to the exact label it wanted, and
there is no clue in the package itself. New users are apparently expected
to remember this from an imprint received while in the womb. It's amazing
what programmers never think to include in their work.
Now that I have it running, I see some inconvenient behaviors; does yours
do the following:
1) I wanted to put a shadow of its desktop object in the Startup folder,
but the popup menu of this object doesn't have such an entry, or even one
to Copy. It is possible only to Move the icon to the Startup folder, so
that it is the only copy. Does yours do this?
2) When the program is started, by either clicking on the object or from
the Startup folder, it comes up with its Settings notebook visible. I find
no way to force it to start minimized/hidden; do you?

I am running Warp 4 on all machines. Not all the drives I am backing up
on the other machines even have drive letters as far as my machine is
caoncerned: I bachup using the CLBACK.EXE command-line program, run from
tiemd-execution batch files that back up different drives to different
backup sets on different days. I access the drives using the
\\<MachineName>\<DriveName>\<FileSpec> nomenclature.
I have defined myself as Administrator on every machine, with the same
password as on my own machine. I think that may make a difference.

I think the Demo version is a few steps bechind the "real" version:
still ver. 4.0, but maybe 4.0d or thereabouts; the latest version is
4.0i. The demo version is supposed to be the Pro version, but it quits
after 10MB.
You can call CDS and get an unlocking code that will allow
unlimited-size backups for 2 weeks.

I don't know what interface the T4i's mentioned above have. I asked CDS
about parallel port drives since we have one (an HP/Colorado 4/8 GB
Travan) for laptops. They answered that neither their OS/2 nor their
Win95 product supports parallel port drives. I had already tested it on
a Win95 laptop. Before I installed the HP software, BAii (evaluation
version) wouldn't recongnize it. After I installed the HP software,
BAii recognized it as a SCSI tape drive and was able to operate it
without problem. Apparently the HP software installed a device driver
that makes the parellel port drive look like a SCSI drive to an
application. Perhaps your different experiences with the T4i has to do
with this type of interface issue???
What would be useful would be a driver/utility/whatever that would make
a parallel port tape drive (or at least MY parallel port tape drive :-)
look like a SCSI drive. Know of any such beast?
The BA/2 (and BAii) ability to do command line backups is VERY
attractive, a strong reason (in my mind) to prefer it over NovaStor.
Another suspect suggested to me (and mentioned above) was PC-bax which I
haven't tested yet. I *think* I saw in their web site that they could
support parallel ports, but they wasn't very clear about it.
