Maybe not! I have just under 60 OS/2 desktops that I directly control and one
by one I
have been switching them over to the DaniS506.ADD. Now (finally) with the
newest
release (1.1.0) the last 6 (using ALi chipsets, stamped as TXPro) that have
never been
able to use the Dani drivers(traps at boot up) now work very well. The users
of these
machines couldn't be happier. Could it be this is the only reward the author
wants?
As was the case years ago with the SIO drivers, I would have *paid* for this.
I sure
hope IBM buys this work and rolls it into a fixpak.

Lorne,
I don't have BM installed. I left a 10meg block free on my primary drive
(a 13gig Maxtor) at the end of free space.
But I screwed up, forgetting that BM must reside in the first 1024
cylinders.
I appreciate the input, but if that is true - that is the Boot Manager
MUST be installed - then that means one can't use a third-party boot
manager and have Warp installed on a secondary drive. I was planning on
using the built-in BM within Windows 2000.
That strikes me as kind of strange.
After all, Partition Magic has a boot manager ...
Windows NT/2K has a boot manager ...
And there are others ...
Does that mean Warp is not compatiable with those others ???
I hope that is not the case.
I'd hate to think that I'd have to completely trash my system in order
to have Warp and Windows NT/2K coexist ...

I think the problem is that OS/2's FDISK won't do the
set "Installable" when the Boot Manager code is not
present. The BM from Partition Magic will suffice, but
that is just a re-labeled IBM BM (at least in PM v3.x)
From what I've heard the Partition Magic Boot Manager
and PM itself will allow the paritions to be set up
so OS/2 can be installed with versions later than
PM v3.0 to 3.05 (that's the one I have).
The LVM (Logical Volume Manager) from WSeB
also has a Boot Manager that will work.
The Windows NT/2000 boot manager does not qualify
and may cause problems with other OS installs, at least
that's what I've understood from other postings. The
Windows "boot manager" is actually the NT loader
and I don't think it is recognizable as a "Boot Manager".
I think that if you set up a primary partition on a
drive and mark it as "C:" the OS/2 install will use that
one by default, if the disk partition maintenance utility
you have can do that, it's worth a try.
If the partitions on the current primary drive will not
be visible to OS/2 (like NTFS or Linux partitions)
you could disconnect the current master drive,
set up the current slave as a master, and
install OS/2 to the drive that way. The only problem
you can run into is if a primary partition on the
current master drive will be visible to OS/2 when
boots (like a FAT primary), this will cause the
OS/2 boot drive to be drive D which will cause
boot time problems.
So if you have:
Current Master Disk 1
partition 1 (primary) NTFS
partition 2 (logical)
free space (10 meg)
Current Slave Disk 2
partition 1 (primary) - for OS/2)
partition 2 (logical)
Using the Disk 2 as master for install purposes
will allow you to install OS/2 on the primary.
When you switch the Disk 2 back to slave
the Disk 2 primary partition can be added to the
NT loader menu and it should boot OS/2 properly.
If Disk 1 partition 1 is FAT it will be visible to
OS/2 at boot time so the HPFS OS/2 partition
will be assigned drive D: (according to the
drive letter assignment rules that OS/2 follows)
and OS/2 will not boot correctly.
I have also found that if you place Boot Manager
on a drive when it is the master drive, and then switch
the drive to the slave drive, Boot Manager will still
be started at boot time (I have no idea why but I
managed to do it twice).

Setting a partition installable is just the installation program's way of
knowing which drive you want to install to. The only time you'll be able
to make such a choice is when booting from installation diskettes, and
only drives which can be booted can be set installable.
If it's beyond the 1024th cylinder, FDISK won't let you set it
installable.

Mike,
Ummm ...
That's EXACTLY what I am trying to do !!!
Install Warp 4 from the install disks (with the updated IDE drivers) and
the cdrom.
The drive I'm trying to install to is ONLY a 2gig driver. With LBA it
does not exceed 1024 cylinders.

In order to install Warp 4 on a second hard disk you have to first install
Boot Manager on the first one. After the Warp 4 installation is complete
you can remove the Boot Manager if you like, but them you have to switch
between your different operating systems in some other way.

Subj: Chkdsk Warp 3.0
From: "Matthew A. Jones" <m.jones@xpedite.com>
Does anyone know how we can make chkdsk /f work at bootup.
We have a single partition (c drive obviously) running warp 3.0 (fixpak
38) installed.
We have a number of unmanned workstations at remote sites which run
automated tasks and occasionally get drive errors in one of the temp
directories.
Running chkdsk /f at bootup I believe would greatly improve our system
but the OS locks the partition.. I'm sure there's got to be a way to do
it other than from a boot disk!!
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

If the machines are using the HPFS file system you
can set a parameter on the IFS command line at
the start of the CONFIG.SYS file to do this.
IFS=C:\OS2\HPFS.IFS /AUTOCHECK:+C
The "+" sign in front of the drive letter tells it
to always run chkdsk for that drive.

From what has worked for me it appears that one can only set a
partition installable when booted from the installation disks and then
selecting "Advanced Installation" as opposed to "Easy Installation".
Then, when the installation program suggests a partition that you do
not want to install to, select "Specify a different drive or
partition". FDISK is then started and you can set the partition
installable. Upon exit from FDISK one gets back into the installation
program. Select "Advanced Installation" again. Now it should suggest
the partition that was made installable.
If earlier you had hit F3 to go to a command prompt and then run
FDISK, you would not have been able to set a partition to installable.
It appears that the installation program has to call FDISK, not you,
for this to work.
Maybe there is an unpublished command line argument for FDISK to allow
it to set the installable bit -- anybody know?

RTFM, pages 56 and 59. Run install without interruption. The "Set
Installable" option is only possible if FDISK is called by the install
program. It is a temporary condition that disappears when install is
exited or completed.

BM is required to install someplace besides C:.

What it means is you have to think through the requirements and plan
accordingly. To install on a non-C: partition on which BM is not to be
used, you need to install BM, then install OS/2, then remove BM. To do
that, make your installation disk resemble its final configuration, but
as the primary drive. So:
1 - install drive as primary (only or master)
2 - install BM
3 - create partitions as necessary to result in the ultimate OS/2 drive
letter assignment
4 - install OS/2 (this is the only time to "set installable")
5 - test boot OS/2
6 - remove BM
7 - remove/move/resize partitions as necessary
8 - install drives in final configuration
9 - install OS/2 partition in your boot manager

For a FAT partition the DISKCACHE statement is used to invoke CHKDSK
/F when booting.
If you want the CHKDSK for C: and D: to only occur when a partition is
"dirty" use:
DISKCACHE=256,128,AC:CD
If you want the CHKDSK for C: to occur only when it is dirty and for
D: to occur every time you boot use:
DISKCACHE=256,128,AC:C+D
You may want to use different numbers than the "256,128". See the
OS/2 Warp Command Reference under DISKCACHE.
Why do you want to run CHKDSK every time you boot?

Having done professional support, I've learned never to assume that which
isn't explicitly stated. Don't take offense - it's just me trying to
prevent my time from being inadvertently wasted by confusion over what's
actually being done.

Is translation enabled? If you put the /V switch after the IBM1S506.ADD
statement on disk 1, does the geometry shown indicate that OS/2 is seeing
the translation correctly?

The application does a lot of writes to a temp DOC directory 24 hrs x 7 days.
Ths directory gets trashed on occasion and we are unable to delete it. We
have to rename it due to directory errors. Then the new directory can be
created. This is due to either improper shut downs and/or poor code and/or
excessive writes - not sure. If we can keep the file system in check after
each boot I think we'll have less problems. A small price to pay for a hard
worked chassis!
If curious. These chassis send faxes all day. Fed by data from our network
it pumps out 24 channels (an outbound T1) of fax for a good portion of the
day. I have over 815+ of these workstations in place (815+ outbound T1's)
running all day and anything I can do to improve up time is a plus and our
goal.
Thanks again for your help in the matter.

I wrote a wrapper program that dumped the parameters of FDISK, then called
the program with them. It only works if you use a disk 1 that's not for a
CD install, else the FDISK on the CD is run.
FDISK is run twice before you do anything, first with the parameter
/SI:RB. I suspect that it's a check for the ability to read a boot sector
- any boot sector. But I'm guessing, because there is no output, and it
has a return value of 0.
The second time it's with the parameters /SI:SIZE and /SIZE:100. This
tells FDISK to look for partitions which can be set installable, and are
at least 100MB in size. The return value indicates what level of success
it has. A return of 0 seems to say that a partition was found that meets
the size requirement, but it's not set bootable. A return of 2 seems to
mean that no suitable partition exists, though it occurs with sizes where
I'd expect a return of 0 instead. Beyond that, the value is the number of
the first drive letter which meets the size requirement, and is set
bootable. The numbers are in increments of 8, beginning with 8, so A=8,
B=16, C=24, etc.
When you run FDISK to choose the installation drive, the parameters are
/SI:FS and /SIZE:100. That's what tells FDISK to allow setting a
partition as installable. The chosen drive is communicated via the return
code, again in multiples of 8. If no drive was chosen, 0 is returned.
So, if you find that FDISK won't choose a drive that you know OS/2 can be
installed on and booted from, it's possible to use a substitute FDISK.COM
to trick the installation program into using the drive you want. However,
it can't be done from the standard CD installation, since that uses the
FDISK from the CD, as stated above. You can, however, copy the CD to a
hard drive, and the OS/2 installation program will see that as the CD.
That allows you to replace FDISK.COM with a custom program that spits out
the return values you want, given the parameters above. Ideally, it'd be
a wrapper program that only intervenes when the /SI:FS parameter is given.
Incidentally, the approach of using the hard drive for installation also
allows installing OS/2 with updated files, obviating the need for applying
a fixpack. It's important to put the appropriate SYSLEVEL files in the
\OS2\INSTALL directory, however, so future fixpack installations don't
balk.

I have one, I like it, but it did fail after one month and had to be replaced
under warranty. I guess long term reliability is a question, but the second
drive has been working fine. Have no idea about the financial soundness of

Maybe it is possible to upgrade the firmware of a Seagate disk.
You could do a search at the Seagate site for your drive or your problem.

Roland,
I've had my share of nits with Wseb. What I would suggest trying is copying
the scsi driver(s) from the 4.0 box to the Wseb box and reboot. Uhh... make
a backup first... :')
Over here, the Wseb supplied drivers for our bus mice and com.sys simply
refuse
to work. Also, we've noticed some really weird characters being displayed
where
time, date and other information should be displayed. It's such an annoyance,
I took the Wseb box offline and replaced it with old-but-true Lanserver 4.0.
Lanserver works... and works... and works...
In Wseb for instance, clicking open netscape on Wseb, going to page setup and
looking
at the margin settings... instead of seeing numbers, garbage is displayed and
once you open page setup, your netscape printing support is destroyed... It's
not a netscape specific problem as this "bug" is sprinkled all though Wseb.
Some days Wseb is perfect, some days all it wants to display is trash and it's
total hell.

They both run flawlessly, burning both CDR and CDRW via CDRECORD. IMHO the
6416
just isn't worth the extra bucks. You be better off buying the 4416 and
spending the difference that a 6416 costs on extra media...

The driver I am using is the same as under Warp 4.0. I have tried previous
versions and all exhibit the same problem. This is the driver I'm using
currently (taken from a directory listing):
21-01-99 11:48a 138380 219 AIC78U2.ADD
This is version 3.02 of the driver as downloaded from the ASUS site, since it
is an Asus motherboard. It is the same as the driver that can be downloaded
from the Adaptec site too.
Not sure if I've tried the driver that comes with WSeB since I upgraded my
machine from Warp 4 to WSeB, rather than doing a fresh install. I'll check
this out...

Hi
I have a 6416s, and a Tekram DC390U2W. I haven't had the drive long
enough yet to test it thoroughly, I haven't tried at all to record
anything with either Linux or Solaris.
It comes with Adaptec recording software for Win32, which seems to work
OK. It also comes with jumpers and a single connection SCSI cable
(SCSI-2, 10Mbyte/sec).
On OS/2, the software choice seems to be either RSJ ($$$) or
cdrecord/mkisofs. The latter seems to work. However, to date I haven't
succeeded in creating a multisession disk that OS/2 can read other than
the 1st session. Perhaps this is a limitation of the decrepit cdfs.ifs.
I haven't yet tried the demo version of RSJ.

Paul

Jerry,
In another posting, Eric Olson suggested that I flash the firmware on my
CDRW. Once I finally found the update files on the Yamaha web site (I must be
going blind!), I downloaded the latest flash and then set about building a
DOS boot disk with SCSI support. This is turning out to be a painfull
experience (I haven't used DOS for a *long* time) as I don't have any FAT
partitions on my system, so I'm trying to build everything onto a diskette. I
hate DOS...
Hopefully the firmware update will fix the problem as it specifically
addresses problems with identifying the CDRW at boot time. I hope it is all
worth it....
I have already tried the driver from Warp 4.0 and it hasn't made any
difference.
As for other problems with WSeB, I've not had too many. Java isn't too good
in Netscape 4.61 and the SMP performance didn't make as much difference as
I'd hoped for in the upgrade from Warp 4.0 (1 x 400MHz PII) to WSeB (2 x
400MHz PII), but generally it is exceptionally stable and does everything I
want. There are problems but I'm getting around them, however painfull :-)
Thanks,
Roly.

Good luck. With LBA the 1024 cylinder is beyond 8 MB.

Out of the box, it will probably break with large drives.
I can't think of any reason why the updated drivers won't work with it,
though.

That's because PQM v4 and later don't have OS/2 executables. OS/2 can
deal with a drive beyond 1024 cylinders, but DOS cannot.
So, if you're using a large drive without translation, PQM's DOS
executable simply can't deal with it. Did they even put a non-DOS
executable in the v4 and v5 products? Version 3 only includes DOS and
OS/2, where the DOS one looks like a Win95 program (which it's not).

These are created when CHKDSK is run on an HPFS partition and it finds
orpahaned chunks of files. If you've not noticed anything going missing
recently, you can probably delete them, otherwise you are going to have
to try to figure out exactly what they are by examining them one at a
time. I suggest you watch CHKDSK in future so you know when it's found
some lost files and can determine at that time if they matter while you
probably remember what you were doing when the system crashed!
Graham.

They are created by CHKDSK, and used to store "lost" file data, after
running with the /F switch (after a power outage, for example).
There's a chance that there's data you want in those directories, so you
should check before deleting them.

I have a WD 20 Gb sitting in a box right now - no luck getting it to
work under Warp 4 or WSeB. To be fair, however, haven't had much time
for it lately. I heard that either the danis506.add or the newest
(possibly not yet released) IBM1S506.add driver is required.

Another wander down memory lanes - I remember when 16 of us made use of
a machine with 100 MB total disk space and 2 MB RAM to develop and
compile half a dozen different interpreters and the equivalent compiler
versions (where applicable - there can't really be an APL compiler) -
1983 at Watcom (back then it was WatCom). I remember running PCs with
128 KB and floppies...
I recently worked with a large life insurance company that lives on its
database, and the data for the entire mainframe, plus application code,
and source for those applications, lived on 22 GB (but mainframes don't
need anywhere near as much code to implement GUIs). Not that I'd try to
run the same setup off a PC, mind you ;) - it probably couldn't handle
500 simultaneous active users.
It all goes back to the difference in uses - I make use of background
wallpaper in Jpeg format (1024x768 Truecolour) that is still larger than
any of the executables we were producing at Watcom. I did a quick
"Hello, World!" program in a few different compilers recently, using
only standard linkages and runtime libraries, and the resulting code was
larger than many of the interpreter executables we were writing at
Watcom (except for gcc under Linux, which knew to use the libraries). In
my day, these large executables were known as sloppy coding and memory
planning.

I believe the program you need is called SYSINSTX (I think it's a .COM
file). I know almost nothing about it or how it works. I would be VERY
careful when using it (for all I know it could wipe the entire
partition)...
It's on the OS/2 install floppies if it's not on the hard drive.

Not needed really. Boot records are built into the HPFS file system and
are put there when you format the partition. The only time I can think of
that you might need to run SYSINSTX.COM to replace them is if you are
using Warp 3 and don't have a recent fixpack version of UHPFS.DLL in your
LIBPATH when you format the drive. Running SYSINSTX in this situation from
an OS/2 system that has a version of UHPFS.DLL from fixpack 37 or higher
should make it work (fixpack 37 may not be needed but that was the one I
used when I tested). Warp 4 has the fix in it at base level.
You need to use XCOPY s: t: /H/O/T/S/E/R/V to do the copy in the first
place BTW.

I assume that this is a SCSI or ATAPI (IDE) drive?
Look at Back Again/2 Professional. There is a demo version available for

I just installed a 13.5 GB IBM 7200 rpm drive without a problem. It
installs just like a 130 MB drive, just a larger partition(s) :). I
used the DANIS506.ADD driver rather than the IBM1S506.ADD driver but the
need for this is a function of the controller chipset (AMD Irongate/VIA)
in my case rather than the disk drive.

From: "Roland Pinches" <Roland.Pinches@pmail.net>
The problem with my Yamaha CDRW4416S was the firmware level. Once it had been
bought up to the latest level, WSeB recognised it with no problems at all.
In case anyone else is thinking about going through the same process, I have
one piece of advice: the flash update/utility that is downloaded from Yamaha
is a WINZIP self extracting executable. It will require a flavour of Windows
to extract it. This is a bit odd since it is labelled as the DOS download
suitable, allegedly, for Unix and other OS's. If I didn't have a copy of
WinNT 4 on another machine I wouldn't have been able to extract the files.
So, that makes sense then...
The only other problems I had were self inflicted ie: trying to create a DOS
boot diskette with SCSI support for an Adaptec 2940 controller when I
actually have an Adaptec 7890 Ultra2 SCSI embeded controller! DOH!
Thanks to everyone that gave me suggestions on this.

You will need to use a tool like SYSINSTX.COM. On my machine it is in the
c:\os2\install\bootdisk directory. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the syntax
for this command is (help sysinstx failed to produce anything).
I wouldn't recommend xcopying an entire system from one drive to another
because of these sort of problems, however, other people have told me that if
you use a certain combination of switches with the XCOPY command system files
should be put in the correct place. What switches did you use with XCOPY ?

There is a program called DFSEE on http://hobbes.nmsu.edu
that will allow you to make changes to the partition tables.
The file name is dfsee307.zip and it is in the /pub/os2/util/disk
directory.

Just as a note: I've been told that using the switches
/H /O /T /S /E /R /V
with XCOPY will give you the most accurate and complete copy possible,
although I don't know if it can copy a bootsector in this way.

For some magic reason..
for me the 1.6Gb ==>6.4GB copywork was a challenge with OS/2.
PartitionMagic versions did not handle the case. Even floppy
(with updated drivers) started did not make the bootable os/2
partition. The solution was Info-Zip for os/2 - and even with
this the floppy started chkdsk /f and sysinstx was necessary.

Hi Roly,
I haven't looked at that Yamaha update (I have the 4416S 1.0g
firmware in a plain zip file) but you can usually unzip
self-extracting executables. Try unzip -l on it. unzip reports an
error for something unknown at the beginning -- that's the unzip
program -- then processes the rest of the image with no problem.
Cheers,
Peter

SYSINSTX.COM
It doesn't exist on your OS/2 partition. Run it from the OS/2 CD, or an
OS/2 boot disk.
Run it while booted from the version of OS/2 who's startup files you need.

I don't know of any such program, but it's not that difficult to do

This is warp 4. The Fixpack on the partition is 11; however, can't speak
for
the boot floppies! How to update those? I imagine somehow using somthing
in
os2\bootdisk.
I am thinking; maybe I also need to reinstall Bootmanager So it can
point correctly to my partition. Its a big drive.

I'm sure I got the ones necessary for this.
Keep hidden and system attributes; verify, empty directories too (such
as the desktop!) and also keep extended attributes; overwrite if
necessary.
This is just how unimaint does desktop backups; I knew it should work
for the drive.

Mike,
Ok that's a very helpful clarification/explanation, but remember one
reason for PQM V4 release was allegedly(according to PQ's blurb) to
fully support >8Gb HDD's along with supplying W9x/NT native
executables.....so....
A somewhat tenuously related question perhaps, but the implication from
your statement and the above is that V3(OS2) is therefore still usuable
but I would also add: only presumably if you don't have a FAT32
partition on a >1024cyl(>8Gb) HDD?
I say that because despite similiar assurances from Trevor H that OS/2
V3 executable still works on large drives(and like you he's inevitably
usually correct if not always consistently plausible<g>), V3(OS/2)
Partition Resize option wasn't displayed for me on a 10.8Gb FAT32 and I
had to therefore use V4 from a W9x partition(or bootable rescue disk)
instead.
At Trevors suggestion I also checked that I wasn't booting with Int13
driver and although bearing in mind this alleged FAT32 restriction seems
somewhat plausible given OS/2 itself doesn't recognise FAT32 without
additional IFS drivers loaded(and the somewhat unrelated fact that
OS2boot ldr isn't LBA aware either<g>), I'm still wondering if I hadn't
missed something else more obvious like some bios translation
configuration anomaly specific to the Gigabyte MB I was using possibly?
I appreciate you were only initially clarifying the reasons on why the
problem on how to create an installable partition existed(for a poster
that didn't appear to have any FAT32 partition anyway), but perhaps your
goodself/someone could kindly confirm whether PQM V3 (OS/2) should still
be fully functional on >8Gb IDE with a FAT32 partition included and
with or without bios translation enabled?
(Lack of adequate backup media capacity or spare >8Gb IDE's prevents me
from currently doing the obvious and fully experimenting with these
various scenarios myself so I guess I'm being very cheeky and a tad lazy
asking the question!<g>)
Otherwise if (as I suspect) this is indeed an anticipated/expected
restriction then if you do need to use FAT32 in future and subsequently
want to manipulate any partitions on these large drives then you're
practically forced to use a V4/5 W9x/NT executable anyway!
So to summarise, does all this therefore mean(on > 8Gb IDE):
1. If you don't have FAT32 then you can use PM V3(OS/2) irrespective of
translation?.
2. If you have FAT32 then you can only use V4/5 (W9x) irrespective of
translation or V4/5 (DOS) with translation enabled? (The v3 OS/2
executable only giving you partial limited functionality?) ....and also
not forgetting you need latest patches or PTEDIT to avoid (or correct)
the extended partition type being changed from an OS/2 recognisable
X'05' to Win9X only recognisable X'0F'.
Or could it be that the presence of a FAT32 primary partition is
irrelevant and there's got to be another reason for the disparity
between my own limited observations and Trevors far wider and more
comprehensive experiences(the latter apparently also being supported by
your own very worthy explanation)?

Here's what worked for me when FDISK caused similar trouble some months ago:
Boot using the OS/2 install disks. When the third disk has been read, you
will get the choice to interrupt and open an OS/2 command shell by pressing
F3. This way, if e.g. D: is the drive you wish to use for OS/2, you can
prepare the installation partition manually by "FORMAT D: /FS:HPFS /L",
then EXIT and continue the OS/2 install, confirming the selected partition.
Please post whether this already does the trick for you.
Hope it helps...

Subj: Query re copy /(V)erify option and single byte errors.
From: JohnS <jscott@csolve.net>
I have a properly terminated SCSI 1G external JAZ drive
that appears to be generating it's own errors.
If I copy large (200m) zip files from my IDE drive to the
JAZ drive using either XCOPY or COPY , with the /V switch
the copy appears to complete without errors.
However if I then do UNZIP -T on the copied file, errors
are detected in the same location each time (on the same file).
If I do a COMP between the original and copies, the errors
are in the same place each time.
Questions:
Does FORMAT /L mark and hide bad sectors?
When the verify switch is used, is the READ performed on the disk
or on the buffered WRITE data.
Is there any way, regardless of how slow, that I can reliably copy
data between two media? (pen and paper won't do) <g>
Thanks

That's a question I'm afraid I can't answer. The largest drive I have in
any system right now is 6GB. I have right about 6GB free across all the
drives on the network, so I'm not in much of a hurry to get a big, fancy
new drive <g>.
Under OS/2, there is but one way to read a physical drive directly, and
that's using DosDevIOCtl() category 9 functions.
There's nothing I can think of in a possible implementation that would
cause a program to break at the 8GB point.
So, my best guess is that provided the driver in use by OS/2 can handle
drivers greater than 8GB, so can PQM v3.

I can verify that translation is not required to function beyond 1024
cylinders. I can't verify the size issue, as explained above.
I'm inclined to assume that you have in fact installed the updated IDE
drivers from IBM, for >8GB drive support. If that's the case, then PQM's
failure to resize a FAT32 partition would seem to fall under one of two
reasons, as my guess:
1) The program is, in fact, broken with respect to drive size, even
though there's no implementational cause for it to be under OS/2, beyond
using an appropriate IDE driver.
2) PQM v3 can recognize a FAT32 partition, but not manipulate it, period.
The second assumption should be easy to dismiss, if false, provided you
have a FAT32 partition smaller than 8GB on which the assumption in
question may be brutally shattered.

I've certainly no deeply-rooted disinclinations towards speculation, but
my ammunition in this case is far too small to put any sizable holes in
your current shroud of mystery. The extent of my ability to test PQM v3's
FAT32 functionality is limited to an attempt (quite recently undertaken,
during my attempt to make this followup at least partially useful) to
create a FAT32 partition on a drive with free space available. If this
rather paltry test is any indication, then my second guess above is more
correct than you'd like, as PQM didn't even list FAT32 as a valid
partition type to create.
The reason I'm unable to go further than that is because I have no FAT32
partitions anywhere, with which I could even verify PQM's willingness to
do anything with such a beast. This dearth of such abominations of data
storage is not due solely to the fact that they are, in fact, wretched,
and completely incompatible with non-Win9x operating systems (barring
additions), but also due to the fact that I own neither Win95 release B,
nor Win98. Win 95 release A has been quite sufficient at fulfilling its
role here, that of an overcomplicated (for the task) game loader.
So that I don't feel that I got away too easily, I'll endeavor to explain
why I doubt there is any problem with >8GB drives with PQM, leading to a
conclusion that a lack of FAT32 functionality is to blame.
As I mentioned, reading the physical drive directly in OS/2 is
accomplished with the DosDevIOCtl() API, using category 0x09 functions.
The primary function in question is 0x0064, which is given a define of
PDSK_READPHYSTRACK (with category 0x08 functions, for reading logical
drives, the same function has the same number, and is defined as
DSK_READTRACK). This function relies on CHS (cylinder/head/sector) values
to determine which sector(s) is/are to be read. Those values are stored
as unsigned short integers. So, to function properly at all, the program
must also use storage at least as large (though it would be safe to cast
the head value to an unsigned char, even though that one byte of "saved"
memory would be allocated from the system anyway, due to page alignment
issues). That makes for a maximum drive size of:
65536 cylinders * 65536 heads (AKA tracks/cylinder) * 65535 sectors/track
That comes out to 256 Terrabinarysectors, which is beyond the capacity of
the PC partitioning scheme (4 Gigabinarysectors).
So, given that, I can't imagine any programming error which would yield a
functional program up to 8GB, but non-functional afterwards. There are no
opportunities for an overflow to rear its ugly head, unless an unsigned
character variable were used for cylinders (one byte each would be
sufficient for both tracks/cylinder and sectors/track), in which case the
break would occur at 256 cylinders, a value sufficiently low to make the
program non-functional on virtually every drive ever made.
The upshot (yes, it's coming) is that if the problem is indeed with FAT32,
and not 8GB (as all the evidence, despite there being none to speak of,
points to), then the DOS version of v4 or v5 will be necessary. Since one
will never find a FAT32 partition beyond 1024 cylinders (without some
disastrously clever fool intervening), you shouldn't ever be left in the
position where neither the v3 OS/2 executable or v4/v5 DOS executable will
work. While on the surface that may seem a small comfort, it should be
weighed in full consideration of the fact that DOS takes quite a bit less
time to boot than Win9X, and is less likely to do something clever to
"protect" you, resulting in a loss of data.

If your chipset does not support Busmastering, have you added the /!BM
parameters (see section 3.1 of the IDEDASD README.TXT) to the above line ?
Have you remarked out the IBMINT13.I13 driver in your CONFIG.SYS ?
Does the problem persist even if you comment out all unneeded CD-ROM and
(e.g. SCSI) adapter drivers from the installation disk's CONFIG.SYS ?
Hope it helps...

From: Matt Hickman <matthickman@my-deja.com>
Compaq released its "OS/2 Support Software Diskettes for Compaq
Version 4.20 Revision A" November 9th. The readme says that the
release is for Y2k compliance.
Unfortunately, my client is already locked down and is not allowing
changes to their systems until after the new year. They have done Y2K
testing with the old Compaq drivers and did not find any problems.
Does anyone know what was changed in these drivers (if anything)?
I am not sure that drivers have any business doing date checking
anyway, so I am a bit skeptical that any Y2K "fixes" would have any
impact at all. But I could be convinced otherwise.

Make sure PNP is disabled in your Setup (CMOS) options.
If you have an option in the CMOS that asked if PNP OS
set it to 'NO'.
Is the built-in com port disable? If not, it may be conflicting
with your internal modem.
Also type this from an OS/2 command prompt:
"RMVIEW /IO" <ENTER>
and
"RMVIEW /IRQ" <ENTER>
